Ýr’s Mittens - Iceland Knit Fest 2019
All recipes and knitting patterns in this booklet are designed by Ýr Jóhannsdóttir, better known as Ýrúrarí, exclusively for the Iceland Knit Fest held in Blönduós in June 2019.

The theme of the recipes is “sea creatures and the ocean”. All recipes are designed building on the same basic recipe. The designs are suggestions rather than instructions. Feel free to experiment and have fun with knitting cheerful Iceland Knit Fest mittens!

Mittens - the basic pattern Materials: Léttlopi (wool from Álafoss), sock knitting-needles 3,5 mm and 4,5 mm. The mittens are knit in the round. Rib Cast on 32 stitches on 4 needles nr. 3,5 and knit 1x1 rib (alternating 1 stockinette stitch and 1 purl stitch) for 5 cm (or as long as you prefer the rib to be).
Mitten Change to needles nr. 4,5 and to stockinette stitch and at the same time add 1 stitch at the beginning of each needle until there are 36 stitches on the needles, 9 stitches on each needle. Knit 18 rows or until the mitten gets to where your thumb begins. Marking for thumb Right hand mitten; knit the first 7 stitches on needle 1 with a yarn in another color , move the 7 stitches back to the left needle and knit them with the mitten yarn. Left hand mitten; repeat the same, but instead of the 7 first stitches knit the alternate color yarn in the last 7 stitches on knitting needle nr. 2. Now knit the mitten until it covers your thumb when it’s tried on. Decreases For needles nr. 1 & 3; knit 1 stitch, lift one stitch without knitting it on the right needle, knit 1 stitch and pull the unknit stitch over the previously knit one. Knit the remaining stitches on the needle. For needles nr. 2 & 4; knit until 3 stitches are left on the needle, then knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 the remaining stitch. Knit one row. Repeat the last 2 rows until 12 stitches are left on the needles, then decrease in every row until 4 stitches remain. Pull the yarn through the last 4 stitches and tie loose ends. Thumb Pick up with 2 needles the stitches in the rows above and below the marking spot of the different color yarn marking the beginning of the thumb, in all there should be 14 stitches on the 2 needles. Pick up 2 stitches at each end of the needles to prevent holes. Total of 18 stitches on the needles. Knit 2 stitches together at each end of the needles, (16 stitches remain). Knit 14 rows. Decreasing on thumb 1. row: *knit 2 stitches together and 1 stitch stockinette* repeat till end of row 2. Row: knit stockinette. 3. row: *knit 2 stitches together and 1 sitch stockinette* repeat till end of row 4. row. bind off and tie loose ends.

Bird Mittens that resemble a seabird, the seagull. It's easy to play around with this recipe and take inspiration from other birds - puffins and ducks, for example. You can also choose yarn in other colours for the bird’s eyes, feathers and beak. Recipe; mittens base recipe Knit with white léttlopi until the row where you mark the thumb. I sewed the nostrils with single loop stitches, but it’s easy to try something different, also for the eyes! Use buttons or pearls, for example, and other kinds of stitches or picture knitting.
Sea urchin For this mitten, I had a picture of a sea urchin by my side, and this was the outcome. Here is how I made mine, but I highly recommend to try and make your own version with different textile techniques. It could be fun trying to express the unique patterns and shapes in urchins in a more abstract way. Recipe: The glove recipe from page 2 with Léttlopi 1702 “vetrarbraut”
Five lines of chain stitch embroidery from the gloves top middle. Two lines by the mittens sides and three in between on the back. Stitch it loosely, so it won't affect the shape of the mitten. I used Léttlopi 9432 for the lines.
For those curly spikes, I used Léttlopi 1705. Take a small clip of the yarn and stitch through in every 4th loop of the chain stitch. The clippings are threaded through the loop, so it is even on both sides and knotted together again and again until it’s about 3 cm long. Make sure to do a tight final knot to keep everything in place. It’s also possible to try other techniques with braiding or crochet and maybe to use more random yarn leftovers to get more diversity in the spikes.
Shark Basic mitten in color 9418 Teeth: White einband knitting needle 3,5. Take up 5 loops, best starting in the middle top of mitten. Be careful to start knitting on the right side, so the small cast on lines are in the inside of the mitten. Knit 4 rows. In row 5, knit the first 2 loops together and the last two together. Knit 2 rows and then cast off. Knit the next tooth two loops from the other. Stitch the loose ends to the inside of mitten and stitch it down there. Eyes are embroidered.
Jellyfish Basic receipe with Léttlopi 1403. Change color to Léttlopi 1413 10 rows after you mark the thumb in, knit two rows. Change color to Léttlopi 1702 for the rest of the mitten. Long stingarms: (tentacles) Use three knitting needles nr 3,5 two to take up loops. Longer arms (purple 1413): One needle takes up two loops in the middle of lower purple line of the mitten. The other needle takes two blue loops from the row underneath. Knit in circle with purple yarn for 20 rows Count 10 rows down from where you took up the first loops. Take up one blue loop there and knit with the first purple loop on your needle and the next blue loop you also take up and knit with the next purple loop. Finish knitting row. Now the sting arm is stuck to the mitten. Repeat steps 2&3 until you are down by the mittens rib. Knit 5 rows, cast off and stitch down loose ends Short sting arms (lightblue): Sama technique as for the purple ones Count 3 loops next to the purple arm and cast on 4 loops on 2 needles like in the first arm. Knit in circle, 6 rows Count three rows down from the cast on loops and take up the loops like in step 3 in purple arm Repeat step 2&3 five times Knit 4 rows, cast off and stitch down loose ends All in all, I made 5 tentacles for my mitten, but you experiment with the length and number of arms. To make the mitten easier to use, I recommend sticking the tentacles down more often, so they stay closer to the mitten and won’t get stuck in things. In the end, I stitched 5 single loop stitches with the purple yarn to resemble the top part of a jellyfish.
The sea A very easy recipe you can play around with and make the changes you want. Recipe: The basic recipe from page 2 knitted with Léttlopi 9419. It’s good to have variations of blue/grey + white wool for the waves. The first wave 1.14 loops taken up right after the rib with knitting needle nr 4,5 2.2 lines knitted 3.In line nr 3 it’s +1 loop in every other loop 4.When you have about 31 loops on your needle, knit 3 regular lines. 5.Cast off Next wave Take up 14 loops 4 rows after the first wave. Knitted exactly the same as first one but in other color. Keep 4 lines between every wave, and when you get closer to the end of the mitten, just cast on fewer loops and knit with same technique. On this mitten, there are 12 waves. They are a bit crowded - it could also look nice to have fewer waves. You can also play with the height, add more loops to them or change color inside of the wave.

Polar bear Basic recipe from with white LĂŠttlopi Until 6 loops are left on every needle in the decreasing of the mitten. Change to black LĂŠttlopi and keep on with the decreasing until 4 loops are left on every needle. Cast off and stitch loops together that are facing each other on either side to give the polar bear a flat nose. To find a place for eyes and ears, I find it best to try the mitten on and see where they fit best. I stitched the eyes with straight stitch in a circle, filled in with more straight stitches. Ears: Count two loops from either side of mitten and take up 6 loops. Knit 4 rows. In row 5&6 stitch the first to loops together. Then cast off. Stitch loose ends to inside of mitten and stitch them down
