Fate as we know it sometimes lies beyond our means of understanding and surfaces at just the right moment in our lives. For Davis, that moment appeared in 2004, when he took a leap of faith and left a decade-long career in technology to travel around the world, camera in hand, for a year of self-assessment and exploration. Driven by his motto, “There’s no reason to look back; you’re not headed that way,” he continues to pursue the very depths of what connects us all to being uniquely human.

After being commissioned by the Museum of the Southwest in 2013, Greg made the journey to the world’s largest spiritual pilgrimage, India’s Kumbh Mela. For millennia, every twelfth year, millions upon millions of devoted pilgrims have gathered at the confluence of the three holiest rivers in India on a quest of salvation. In addition to creating a collection of deeply compelling images, he and his talented team produced the award-winning short film: Cloth Paper Dreams. The film screened in more than twenty film festivals around the world and was exhibited at nine art centers and museums.

In 2018, Davis was commissioned by Art Center Waco to create and produce a follow-up: a mixed-media cultural experience that premiered in May of 2022. Davis’ latest creation, Oaxacan Gold, illuminates the stunning beauty, cultural depth and mystical nature of the great Mexican state of Oaxaca through an exhibit that features photography, folk art, textiles, dance and music. The exhibition is currently available for hire.

Davis is a contributing and published photographer for National Geographic/Disney and was represented by the National Geographic Image Collection for more than a decade. He was honored as the Ambassador of the Year in 2017 by the Austin-based non-profit, Well Aware, the first time they had ever awarded that recognition. Davis worked his way from local festivals to international exhibitions, and his works now hang in private, public and institutional collections worldwide.

THE BLANKET WEAVER

In 2005, nine months into a transcontinental soul-searching expedition, a twist of fate put Greg on a dirt path in the far north of Vietnam—one that converged with that of a Black Hmong blanket weaver. Without a word of common language between them, Davis gestured towards her hands. She held them out: deep blue and green, worn from seasonal indigo dyes, an intricate map of the lines of fate. With only a $400 point-and-shoot camera, Davis captured something larger than himself. Though he did not know it yet, in this fleeting moment, their lives had been woven together.

That moment marked a shift for Davis. It was in that encounter that he found his calling: to connect people in vastly different worlds through the medium of photography. For this he is immensely grateful. The way this simple image triggers such deep and varied reactions in viewers is a source of inspiration for Greg and fuels his desire to one day return to those same mountains, find those hands and tell the story of how we are all woven together. It will be his spiritual pilgrimage to connect to something greater than himself.

“The purpose of my work is to serve as a reminder that we are all part of something greater than ourselves.”

CLOTH PAPER DREAMS

Every twelve years at the confluence of the three holiest rivers, untold millions converge to pray, commune and ultimately connect to something greater than themselves. Watch as the stories of three men from three different worlds are woven together. Follow one man on his pilgrimage of faith, another on his journey of devotion and a third on his quest for purpose.

Journey to India’s Kumbh Mela and pair this eleven minute short film with the twenty-four piece photo exhibit shot on location at the world’s largest pilgrimage.

All of Greg Davis Photography Collectors’ Edition pieces are printed on archival museum rag paper or museum canvas, the pinnacles of fine art media. They are acid-free certified to avoid media degradation and internally buffered to resist gas fading, insuring maximum conservation of your print. The media is designed to meet gallery and museum longevity requirements with respect to the ISO 9706 standard. All Collectors’ Edition pieces are printed using archival pigment inks and finished with an extra protective UV coating. The artist inspects each piece individually, then signs and numbers each work of art. All pieces are accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticity.

To protect your investment, never display in direct sunlight. If kept under favorable conditions and not tampered with or damaged, a properly framed giclee is expected to last, without fading or discoloration, at least 180 years.

Oaxacan Gold is a traveling mixed-media cultural experience that is being offered for hire to art centers and museums around Texas and beyond. The purpose of this exhibition is to bring awareness to the stunning beauty, cultural depth and mystical nature of the great Mexican state of Oaxaca through an educational multi-media cultural experience of Davis’ photography paired with a master folk art and textile exhibit. Adding the culinary arts, traditional dance, mezcal tastings and indigo-dyeing workshops are also optional extensions to elevate this event.

This project has be supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
