he Progeny Show and Young Handlers Competition was held in June at Shrewsbury Livestock Market. This was very efficiently and expertly judged by David Houghton of the Tophill Flock. The champion was a single ram lamb sired by Conachan Sharky, shown by Robert Bennett of the Plasucha Flock and Reserve Champion was a group of three lambs sired by Mullan Supremacy from the Scholars flock of Will and Liz McCaffrey.

In the Young Handlers competition the Primary school age award was won by Melissa Forsyth and the Secondary School age was won by Henry Gibbs. The Club held two Prime Lamb Competitions for pens sired by a Texel Ram at Shrewsbury and Bishop’s Castle Markets. There were a good number of entries with plenty of interest in the winning pens. The three day trip took us through Northampton where we stopped to view the Slapton flock of Barbara, Rob and Joanne Smith before continuing on to the South East. On Saturday we visited the Lavenham flock belonging to Stephen and Charlotte Cobbald. In the afternoon we visited the Dutch Texel flock of Sylvia Rawlings at her beautiful home, Wissington Grange. On Sunday we travelled home back through Northampton calling in to see the Blackbird flock of John and Barbara Leadbeater. The quality of the sheep viewed and the hospitality provided by our hosts was absolutely superb, many thanks to all of you.

The Flock Competition was held at the end of June and was judged over two days by Mr David Martyn of the Barnage Flock. Congratulations to Steve, Helen and Anna Smith from the Penparc Flock who won the Championship and the Champion gimmers. The short flock visits focused on three of our own very successful younger members, Robert Pierce’s Oldford Flock, Will and Liz McCaffrey’s Scholars flock and Robert Bennett’s Plasucha flock. We were treated to an excellent display of sheep and wonderful hospitality. A big thank you to all the families concerned. The Shrewsbury Sale was judged by Jim Hartwright of the Whitehart flock. Jim chose a yearling ram from D.K and D.G Goodwin’s Alcaston flock as his champion which sold for 1,420gns. The main Welshpool sale was held on Thursday 3rd October and was judged by Stuart Currie of the Beautry flock. Stuart chose a yearling ram from the Racecourse flock of Martin and Shirley Jones as his champion which made 1200gns. The first prize Ram Lamb and Reserve Champion Penparc Upside was sold for 1750gns, averages were again up on the previous year. The in-lamb ewe sale was held in December at Welshpool Market with the top price of 1,550gns being achieved by Robert Bennett of the Plasucha flock.

The Shropshire County Show was held at the end of May and was well supported by Club members. Paul Johnson (Corriecravie) judged and awarded the championship to a senior ram exhibited by Steve & Carolyn Williams of the Wollascott flock with Will & Liz McCaffrey’s ewe-lamb in reserve.
