INSIDE THE SERIES
Texas Tech plays its first midweek series of the season Tuesday and Wednesday against UNLV at Dan Law Field. The Red Raiders continue their 18-game homestand to open the 2011 season after winning three out of four at last weekend’s Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic in Lubbock. UNLV enters with an identical 7-1 record. This will be the Rebels first road test. Tech will have a busy week as they take on nationally-ranked TCU for a three-game series at “The Law” this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Texas Tech and UNLV meet for the 13th and 14th time this week with UNLV leading the all-time series 7-5. The series is tied 3-3 in games played in Lubbock. The Red Raiders and Rebels split last year’s two-game series in Las Vegas while Tech has won three of the last four overall and three of the last four in Lubbock. The midweek series has alternated locations since starting in Vegas in 2006. The all-time series began in 1986 when UNLV defeated Tech 5-4 (March 2) and 15-14 (March 5) in Lubbock.

TEXAS TECH SPORTS NETWORK For the 18th consecutive year, the entire Texas Tech baseball game schedule will be broadcast live on the Texas Tech Sports Network and made available to its statewide affiliates. The Voice of Texas Tech Baseball, Robert Giovannetti, will handle the play-by-play duties while Dr. Mike Gustafson will provide color commentary. Giovannetti has a 30-minute pre-game show and interviews players and coaches following each game. Games will be carried locally on the flagship station of the Texas Tech Sports Network, Double T 104.3 FM and in Hobbs, N.M. on 1390 AM. Fans who are located outside of the listening areas can follow the Red Raiders online through RaiderVision All-Access at www.texastech.com. Live audio is streamed for every game both home and on the road. RED RAIDER BASEBALL WITH DAN SPENCER WEEKLY RADIO SHOW Fans and media alike can listen to Red Raider Baseball with Dan Spencer (radio show) beginning on Thursday, February 17. The show will be hosted by Robert Giovannetti and will air live on KTTU 104.3 FM between 6 and 7 p.m. The show will air live on location at Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q on South Loop 289 and Slide Road. MEDIA CREDENTIALS - Media members wishing to cover the Texas Tech baseball team at Dan Law Field during the 2011 season must be issued a working credential from the Texas Tech Athletics Communications Office. - All requests for both media and photo credentials must be made in writing at least two days in advance of the game date to Scott Lacefield, Associate Director of Athletics Communications (email: scott.lacefield@ttu.edu). - Requests are honored from sports editors of daily and weekly newspapers, editors of sports periodicals, and sports directors of radio and television stations who broadcast regularly scheduled daily sports reports and talk shows. - Credentials can be picked up in the Athletics Communications Office (south end of Jones AT&T Stadium) or at will call. DAN SPENCER & PLAYER INTERVIEWS Practices are open to the media and the public. Practices will normally begin at 2:15 p.m. and end around 5 p.m. Requested interviews will begin on the field down the left-field line 30 minutes prior to the start of practice. The normally scheduled off day is Monday. To arrange a phone interview with Dan Spencer contact Scott Lacefield. Coach Spencer is available for interviews before each practice and following each game. The Texas Tech clubhouse is closed to the media. Texas Tech players and coaches will be made available in front of the Texas Tech dugout following a brief cooling off period following a game. VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS Texas Tech Athletics will provide video highlights of all home games through an FTP site hosted by Texas Tech University. Members of the media can download files in QuickTime format that are of broadcast quality. Highlights will be made available on the FTP site no later than 90 mintues following the conclusion of the game. - McGruder was named the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic Most Outstanding Player after batting .583 (7-for-12) on the week. McGruder enters this week having reached base in seven consecutive plate appearances. He went 3-for-3 on Sunday with a single, two triples, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. McGruder is batting . 467 on the season.

Dan Spencer is 60-62 overall and 25-29 in Big 12 play during his third season as head coach of the Red Raiders. Named the eighth head coach in Texas Tech history during the summer of 2008, Spencer has wasted no time rebuilding the Tech program. His second season as head coach saw the Red Raiders finish fifth in the Big 12 (best finish since 2004) and defeat seven nationally-ranked opponents, which includes an upset over No. 1 Texas, 4-2, in the Big 12 Tournament. In fact, Spencer and the Red Raiders were the only Big 12 team to defeat Texas twice during the 2010 season, as they also picked up a 12-5 victory in Lubbock. The Red Raiders were also just one of two teams in the Big 12 to win a series against College World Series-bound Oklahoma, taking two out of three against the Sooners at Dan Law Field in Lubbock. Spencer’s squad finished 28-29 overall in 2010, matching the program’s most wins since 2006. The Red Raiders led the conference with 162 doubles (most since 2003 – Baylor) to rank seventh in the country and also led all Big 12 teams with a .310 batting average in conference games. Texas Tech led the Big 12 in batting during league play in 2009 with a .311 average. Spencer’s squad became the first team to lead the conference in batting during Big 12 play in back-to-back seasons since 2003-04 (Baylor). In addition, Texas Tech led the league with 83 doubles during Big 12 games, which is the fourth highest total in Big 12 history and the most since Missouri set the record of 129 in 1997 – the first year of the Big 12 Conference. In only three years (two as head coach), Spencer has coached five Tech student-athletes (four pitchers, one position player) who have been drafted in the top-10 rounds, including four in the top four rounds. Right-handed pitchers Chad Bettis (RHP – 2nd Round – Colorado Rockies) and Bobby Doran (RHP – 4th Round – Houston Astros) were drafted and signed following the 2010 season. Spencer, 45, rejoined the Texas Tech Baseball family on July 2, 2007 when he was named associate head coach on the staff of former head coach Larry Hays. He spent the 2008 season in that role where he coached the pitchers and catchers and headed Tech’s recruiting front. His 2008 pitching staff produced two top-10 round MLB draft picks in juniors Zach Stewart and James Leverton, both of which had never been drafted prior to that season. Stewart was taken in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds while Leverton was taken in the eighth round by the Chicago Cubs. Prior to his arrival at Texas Tech, he spent 11 seasons at Oregon State, the last three as associate head coach, where he served as pitching/catching coach and recruiting coordinator. His pitching staffs during the last two seasons of his Oregon State tenure were instrumental in helping the Beavers become the first back-to-back College World Series Champions since LSU in the late 1990s. In those two seasons, his staffs compiled 3.41 and 3.48 cumulative ERAs while leading the team to 50-16 and 49-18 respective records. His group led the Pac-10 in ERA in both 2005 and 2006 while his bullpen helped pave the way to consecutive national titles by contributing 20-plus saves in both 2006 and 2007. Under his leadership, the Beavers had three pitchers and one catcher named to All-America teams and seven players drafted in the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. Eddie Kunz, the ace of the 2007 staff, and catcher Mitch Canham, the squad’s leading hitter, were both first round draft selections in the 2007 MLB Draft. His collegiate coaching career began at the junior college level six years before arriving at Oregon State, as he landed his first job as an assistant coach at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Wash., in 1991. After just one season in Tacoma, he picked up his first head coaching position as he took over the program at Green River Community College in 1992. While at Green River, he compiled a record of 131-67 between 1992 and 1996.

Overall, Texas Tech will play 11 games against teams from the MWC this season. TAKING A LOOK BACK Texas Tech went 3-1 last week at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. Tech opened the week with a 7-4 win against BYU before losing its first game of the season to the Cougars, 8-3, after committing a season-high four errors. The Red Raiders bounced back defeating Northern Illinois 15-3 and 14-8 in the final games of the classic. ON THE HORIZON Texas Tech continues its homestand this weekend hosting No. 8 TCU for a three-game series, March 4-6, at Dan Law Field. TCU’s road trip to Lubbock will be its first since the 2004 season. TEXAS TECH TO PLAY ON ESPNU & FSN THIS SEASON Texas Tech will have two of its games televised to a national audience as ESPNU has picked up the Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma game on Saturday, April 2, in Norman, Okla., with a 7 p.m. first-pitch. Texas Tech will play in the first Big 12 Game of the Week when traveling to Manhattan against Kansas State on Saturday, April 23, at Tointon Family Stadium with a 1 p.m. first pitch against the Wildcats. Tech’s game against the Sooners is the first for the Red Raiders on the ESPN Family of Networks since 2005, when ESPNU carried all three games of the Tech/OU series in Norman. 18-GAME HOMESTAND TO OPEN THE SEASON IS A SCHOOL RECORD Texas Tech opens the season playing 18 consecutive home games - which is the longest homestand to open a season in school history. It matches the longest homestand in school history, which was first done in 1988 (Feb. 19-March 16), as the 1988 squad went 16-2 with a 15-game win streak to open the stand. On the other side, Tech has had some notable road swings to begin a campaign which includes playing 16 in a row to open the 1972 season (9-7) and playing 25 of its first 28 games on the road to begin the 1976 season (14-11). Tech is 7-1 on the current homestand. TEXAS TECH OFF TO A 7-1 START FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2005 The Red Raiders are 7-1 for the first time since 2005 and for only the 11th time in school history. In fact, the Texas Tech baseball program has started 7-1 only three times the past 14 years. 2011 TEXAS TECH BASEBALL GAME NOTES TEXAS TECH RECEIVING VOTES IN TWO POLLS After a 7-1 start to the season, Texas Tech is receiving votes in two major polls as both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll has Texas Tech among the schools who were receiving votes and were just outside of the Top 25/Top 30 in the nation. The Red Raiders haven’t been ranked in a major national poll since March 28, 2005, when they were No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
STEALING THE SHOW Texas Tech has set the bar high for teams in the Big 12 this season as they have already grabbed 23 stolen bases (29 attempts) in eight games - which leads the conference. The next closest team is Baylor, who in seven games has tallied 18 stolen bases. Last season, Texas Tech was 15-of-21 in stolen bases after its first eight games. Tech ranked sixth in the Big 12 last season with 76 stolen bases.
WHERE THEY RANK - TEXAS TECH HITTERS Texas Tech is second in the Big 12 in batting (.373), on-base percentage (.487), slugging percentage (.507), runs scored (67), base hits (100) and RBI (57) - behind Oklahoma in all categories. Tech leads the conference with 50 walks and with 23 stolen bases. Tech has its best batting average and on-base percentage through eight games since 2005 (.384 batting average/.492 on-base percentage).
THERE IS A FIGHT AT THE BAT RACK In Texas Tech’s first contest against Northern Illinois (2/26), all nine starting position players had at least one base hit by the fourth inning. Overall Tech posted 18 base hits in its 15-3 win over the Huskies. The Red Raiders ended the game with seven players recording a multi-hit game. The last time every starting position player for Tech had at least one base hit in a game was against Missouri (May 2, 2010) last season.
WHERE THEY RANK - TEXAS TECH PITCHERS Texas Tech ranks fourth in the conference in ERA (3.12) and third in strikeouts (68). Tech also ranks third in the Big 12 averaging 8.50 strikeouts/9 innings. Tech has its lowest team ERA through eight games in over 10 years. In addition, Texas Tech’s 22 walks is its lowest total after eight game since 2004 (20).
ALUMINUM BAT RESTRICTIONS PUT IN PLACE FOR 2011 COLLEGIATE SEASON In an effort to make NCAA collegiate bats more like wooden bats, the aluminum bat restrictions for 2011 are supposed to bring offensive numbers back down to earth after many offensive years of final scores resembling those on football scoreboards. Throughout the 2011 season we will compare statistics from this season to the previous five seasons to see what differences the newest bats bring to the game. BARNES’ HIT STREAK REACHES 13 GAMES - MATCHING CAREER-HIGH Sophomore Barrett Barnes extended his hit streak to 13 games - matching his career-high (April 1-20, 2010) - after tallying at least one base hit in each game so far this season. Barnes finished the 2010 season with a five game streak. During his streak Barnes is batting .356 (16-for-45) with 13 runs, five doubles, three home runs, nine RBI and 12 walks. JAMODRICK McGRUDER NAMED BROOKS WALLACE MEMORIAL CLASSIC MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER Texas Tech sophomore Jamodrick McGruder earned most outstanding player recognition at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic after leading the way for Texas Tech to a 3-1 record while batting .583 (7-for-12) with five runs, four extra-base hits (three 3B), two RBI, 14 total bases, a 1.167 slugging percentage, a .750 on-base percentage and with two stolen bases.
CLOCK WATCHERS Not only have the bats changed in the NCAA this season, so has the time between innings. In an effort to address the pace of play in collegiate baseball, the NCAA has implemented a 90-second limit between innings. There will be a 108-second limit between innings for games that are televised. Below is a look at the past five seasons and how long the average game lasted (minutes), along with the number of games that lasted over three hours, over two hours and 30 minutes and games that were under two hours and 30 minutes. SEVEN TECH PLAYERS MAKE BROOKS WALLACE CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Seven Texas Tech players, including Jamodrick McGruder - the Most Outstanding Player at the classic, were named to the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic All-Tournament team following completion of the four-day classic. Bo Altobelli (catcher), Kelby Tomlinson (shortstop), Jamodrick McGruder (outfield), Barrett Barnes (outfield), Reid Redman (utility), Robbie Kilcrease (starting pitcher) and Daniel Coulombe (starting pitcher) all earned recognition. McGRUDER IS ROUNDING SECOND AND HEADING FOR THIRD Jamodrick McGruder is fast, and this past weekend he showed how fast while picking up three triples in the two final games of the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. When hitting his first triple on Sunday, he became the first Tech player since Willie Rueda in 2008 to hit triples in consecutive games. Then, in his third plate appearance on Sunday, McGruder tripled again marking the first time since last season (when he accomplished it) a Tech player notched two triples in one game. McGruder hit a pair of triples at TCU on March 12 during his freshman season. McGruder is the only Texas Tech player to hit two triples twice in his career in over 10 years. In fact, he is the only Tech player since 2001 (Jason Rainey - school record three triples) to hit two triples in a game.
NEELY DOING IT ALL IN RELIEF FOR RED RAIDERS John Neely was impressive out of the Red Raider bullpen for the second straight weekend as he made two appearances - pitching 2.2 innings - with two strikeouts and picking up one save (vs. BYU, 7-4 win). Neely has now made four appearances (all relief ) this season where he is 1-0 with two saves in 8.2 scoreless innings. Neely has struck out eight batters and has yet to issue a walk while opponents are batting just .207 against him. TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, THE PARTY IS OVER In Dan Spencer’s tenure as head coach at Tech, his team has been rock solid when it comes to holding leads. Since 2009, Texas Tech is 53-5 when leading after six innings, 55-2 when leading after seven innings and 57-1 when leading after eight innings.
COULOMBE DIALS UP 9 K’S IN 2ND START - MOST BY A RED RAIDER THIS SEASON Daniel Coulombe was named to the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic All-Tournament team after striking out nine batters in just five innings of work against BYU (2/25). Coulombe did take the loss in his second start of the season, but it had nothing to do with his ability to miss the barrel as he struck out two in the first, two in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth. In addition, seven of his nine strikeouts were swinging. His nine strikeouts are the most by a Texas Tech pitcher this season and the most by a Red Raider since Chad Bettis struck out 10 against then-No. 1 Texas at the Big 12 Championships last season in Oklahoma City.
85 CONSECUTIVE GAMES WITHOUT BEING SHUTOUT Texas Tech owns a streak of 85 consecutive games without being shutout in a game. The last time the Red Raiders were shutout was against then-No. 11 Oklahoma (0-4) on April 11, 2009, in Norman, Okla. Only three times in the Dan Spencer head coaching era have the Red Raiders been blanked on the scoreboard.
FLORA MAKES BACK-TO-BACK STARTS FOR THE RED RAIDERS Ben Flora became the first Tech pitcher to start in back-to-back games since 2007 when he made his season debut on Sunday, Feb. 20, against Northwestern and then started against BYU on Thursday, Feb. 24. Flora only threw 54 pitches against Northwestern. The last Red Raider to start in back-to-back games was A.J. Ramos, but in a different circumstance. Ramos got the nod in the series opener against Kansas State (in Manhattan), and after throwing the first inning, the game was postponed until the following day due to heavy rain. After the completed game one of the series, Ramos took the hill to start game two on Saturday afternoon. Ramos’ back-to-back games were on March 30-31, 2007.
79 CONSECUTIVE HOME GAMES WITHOUT BEING SHUTOUT The Red Raiders’ consecutive games without being shutout streak stretches back even further when finding the last time they didn’t score in a game when playing at Dan Law Field. The last time Tech was shutout at home was against then-No. 2 Missouri (0-1) on March 28, 2008, a streak of 79 consecutive games at Dan Law Field. TEXAS TECH RANKS #16 IN THE NATION IN TOTAL ATTENDANCE Following the first week of the regular season Texas Tech ranks 16th in the nation in total attendance (11,378) and 22nd in the nation in average attendance (2,845). Tech had 2,398 fans at Opening Day (2/18) and then saw 3,551 fans flood the turnstiles for the second game of the weekend before 3,189 fans were in attendance on Saturday night. The final game of the weekend had 2,240 fans in attendance. Texas Tech has ranked among the top 26 in the nation in average attendance every season since 1996.
SCORING EARLY AND OFTEN Texas Tech scored six runs in the first inning in back-to-back games against Northern Illinois, marking the first time in over 10 years to accomplish the feat. The last time Texas Tech scored at least five runs in the first inning in back-to-back games was against San Francisco on February 14-15, 2003, when the Red Raiders plated five runs in the first inning in back-to-back games at Dan Law Field.
TEXAS TECH LANDS NINE ON RED RAIDER CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Texas Tech won the Red Raider Classic with a perfect 4-0 record, and through the competition saw plenty of impressive performances. The Red Raiders placed nine of its players on the all-tournament team, including Kelby Tomlinson (SS), who was named the Most Outstanding Player and Bo Altobelli (C), Stephen Hagen (1B), Nick Popescu (2B), Reid Redman (3B), Jamodrick McGruder (UTL), Barrett Barnes (OF), Robbie Kilcrease (SP) and John Neely (RP).
SPEAKING OF SCORING IN THE FIRST INNING... Texas Tech has scored at least one run in the first inning in seven of eight games this season. This is nothing new for the Red Raiders as last season they scored in the first frame in 10 of the first 11 games of the campaign.

2011 TEXAS TECH BASEBALL GAME NOTES TECH OPPONENTS “LEFT” SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS All four Texas Tech opponents on the first weekend went with the strategy of starting a left-handed pitcher against the Red Raiders. Four opponents tried, four opponents failed. Texas Tech finished the four-game weekend batting .438 (32-for-73) against the lefthanded pitching they saw from Western Michigan, Northwestern and Utah Valley.
BARNES’ OPENING DAY SUCCESS CONTINUES Barrett Barnes had a memorable freshman Opening Day (3-for-4, 2 HR, 6 RBI) and he continued that trend as a sophomore belting a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season against Western Michigan. Barnes is now 5-for-7 with four runs, three home runs and eight RBI in two career Opening Day games.
AND THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMIN’ Texas Tech rattled off 15 base hits against Northwestern in the final game of the Red Raider Classic on Sunday, Feb. 20. The Red Raiders were able to tally at least one base hit in every inning of the game (1st-through-8th - didn’t bat in the 9th). It was the first time a Red Raiders team had registered at least one hit in every inning since collecting 15 hits against then-No. 11 Oklahoma on April 18, 2010, at Dan Law Field.
COMING OUT RUNNIN’ The past three seasons, Texas Tech has hit the ground running with eye-popping stolen base numbers on Opening Day. This season was no exception with four stolen bases (Popescu 2, Tomlinson, Redman). Last season Tech grabbed five stolen bases against Jacksonville State while in 2009 the Red Raiders stole six bases against Southern Utah. TECH TOSSES FIRST TWO-HITTER SINCE 2006 Three Texas Tech pitchers combined for a two-hitter on Opening Day against Western Michigan in the 8-0 shutout. Starter Daniel Coulombe (4.0 IP, 1 H, 5 SO, 2 BB) and relievers John Neely (4.0 IP, 1 H, 4 SO, 0 BB) and Brennan Stewart (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 SO, 0 BB) combined on the effort. It was the first two-hitter for Tech since Feb. 20, 2006, when Dustin Richardson, Jason Seefeld and Brian Cloud took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and eventually settled for a two-hitter against Eastern New Mexico in a 16-0 victory.
TOMLINSON NAMED FIRST-EVER BIG 12 BASEBALL NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Shortstop Kelby Tomlinson was named the first-ever Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Newcomer of the Week. This is the first season that the Big 12 has awarded newcomers from the league on a week-to-week basis. Joining Tomlinson on the weekly honor roll was Oklahoma third baseman Garrett Buechele (Player of the Week) and Texas pitcher Taylor Jungmann (Pitcher of the Week). Tomlinson batted .583 (7-for-12) in the three-day classic. TEXAS TECH ON OPENING DAY Texas Tech improved to 39-23 all-time on Opening Day after defeating Western Michigan 8-0 on Feb. 18. Tech owns a 12-1 record on Opening Day since 1999. Third-year head coach Dan Spencer has led Tech to three consecutive wins on Opening Day. Texas Tech’s only loss over the past 13 years on Opening Day came against then-No. 19 LouisianaLafayette, 0-4, at the Roadrunner Classic in San Antonio on Feb. 23, 2008.
BARRETT BARNES PILES UP PRESEASON ACCOLADES Following perhaps the most productive and most decorated freshman season in Texas Tech baseball history, Barrett Barnes received preseason praises from several national publications/websites. Barnes, who led Texas Tech with a .341 batting average and 14 home runs as a freshman and posted 53 RBI, has been named to several All-Big 12 teams and recognized for his power, hitting ability and projectability as a professional down the road. OPENING DAY AT “THE LAW” Texas Tech has been nearly unbeatable when hosting Opening Day on their home turf at Dan Law Field with a 26-5 all-time record after defeating Western Michigan 8-0 on Feb. 18. The Red Raiders have won 12 straight Opening Day games at Dan Law Field, dating back to a 1-10 loss at home against TCU on February 11, 1997. In fact, since 1986, Texas Tech is 18-1 on Opening Day at Dan Law Field. This season’s opener marked the Red Raiders third consecutive Opening Day at home. COULOMBE BECOMES FIRST TECH NEWCOMER TO START ON OPENING DAY SINCE 2006 Junior lefty Daniel Coulombe became the first Texas Tech newcomer to get the nod on Opening Day since 2006. Coulombe received a no-decision after pitching four-shutout innings allowing just one hit and two walks with five strikeouts. Five years ago Texas Tech defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 21-5, behind starting pitcher Josh Tomlin, who pitched his only season at Texas Tech in 2006. Tomlin’s outing was a success as he tossed 6.0 innings allowing one run (earned) on three hits with one strikeout and one walk. In addition, Tomlin made his major league debut this past year with the Cleveland Indians on July 27 against the New York Yankees.

OPENING DAY ATTENDANCE AT DAN LAW FIELD - MOST SINCE 2003 The paid attendance for Opening Day between Texas Tech and Western Michigan was 2,398, which marked the largest Opening Day crowd for Texas Tech at home since Jan. 31, 2003, when Texas Tech defeated New Mexico (4-2) in front of 3,018 fans at Dan Law Field.
RED RAIDERS ON THE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL The Texas Tech baseball program produced 18 student-athletes who received academic honor roll status following the fall semester. Ten Tech players earned Dean’s List status (3.50-4.00 GPA) while three Red Raiders recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs.
DAN SPENCER WINS THIRD STRAIGHT ON OPENING DAY Dan Spencer became only the third head coach in Texas Tech history to win three straight Opening Day contests. He joins former Red Raider skippers Kal Segrist (1968-70) and Gary Ashby (1984-86), who also won their first three season openers. In addition, Segrist holds the all-time school record winning five consecutive Opening Day games to begin his head coaching tenure (1968-1972).
NEARING 200TH ALL-TIME WIN IN BIG 12 PLAY Texas Tech enters the 2011 season with a 197-183-2 all-time record in Big 12 play, needing only three league victories to mark the program’s 200th win in Big 12 play. This season marks the 15th year of Big 12 Baseball, which began in 1997 when the Red Raiders won the first-ever conference title. The following season, 1998, Texas Tech claimed the Big 12 Tournament championship crown.
SPENCER IS FIRST TECH SKIPPER TO START 4-0 THREE STRAIGHT SEASONS Dan Spencer became the first Texas Tech head coach in the history of the program to start 4-0 during his first three seasons as head coach. Spencer’s best start as a head coach came last year when Tech began the season 5-0 with wins over Jacksonville State (2), Michigan (2) and Bethune-Cookman.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE Boyd’s World ranks Texas Tech 26th overall in strength of schedule and with the 50th most difficult non-conference schedule. Only Oklahoma State (No. 18) and Baylor (No. 23) have a more difficult schedule according to the website.
SPEAKING OF TEXAS TECH STARTING 4-0 The Texas Tech baseball team has started the season 4-0 for the third consecutive year. The only other time in the history of the Red Raider baseball program that Tech has started 4-0 in three consecutive years was from 1991-1993 under legendary coach Larry Hays. This season marks the 11th time in the last 25 years that the Red Raiders have started 4-0 (2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1996, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1986).
NEW OPPONENTS Texas Tech will be taking on three opponents this season for the first time. Iowa, Western Michigan and Utah Valley will all face the Red Raiders for the first time in program history. Last season, Tech faced four first-time opponents, including Michigan, BethuneCookman, Jacksonville State and Alabama A&M. The Red Raiders went 8-0 against their first-time opponents last season, with a 2-0 record against each team.
OPENING DAY SUCCESS FOR TECH FRESHMEN Texas Tech freshman David Paiz continued the trend of Red Raider freshmen succeeding on Opening Day after he went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Last season, Barrett Barnes had a memorable collegiate debut going 3-for-4 with three runs, two homers (2-run, 3-run), six RBI and two stolen bases against Jacksonville State (2/19/10). Barnes became the first Tech freshmen to hit two homers and also have three base hits on Opening Day in over 10 years. It was the best performance for a Tech freshman on Opening Day since Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-4 with three runs, a grand slam and six RBI in his collegiate debut against Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 3, 2006.

His SB total ranked fourth in the Big 12. - Bobby Doran was named Louisville Slugger Co-National Pitcher of the Week. Doran struck out 16 batters in 8.1 innings pitched against Missouri. - Jamodrick McGruder joined Barnes as a Freshman All-American, marking the first time in Tech history the Red & Black had a pair of Freshman All-American selections. - Chad Bettis set the Tech record for career saves (17) and he led the Big 12 in league play with 10 saves. - Scott LeJeune hit 28 doubles to lead the Big 12, rank seventh nationally and to rank tied for second all-time in Texas Tech single-season history. LeJeune also tallied a 17-game hit streak - the longest by a Red Raider since 2004 (Cameron Blair, 20 games). - Texas Tech finished in fifth place in the Big 12 (best finish since 2004). - Texas Tech won five of nine Big 12 series. - Texas Tech tied the school and Big 12 record with 12 doubles against Kansas (4/25). The Red Raiders pounded out seven doubles in the second inning alone. - Texas Tech ranked third in the nation in doubles per game (2.84) and was seventh in the country in doubles (162). - Texas Tech ranked 26th in the nation in total attendance (77,249 fans - 2,491/game).

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT SUCCESS Texas Tech, who finished the 2010 Major League Baseball season with six former players on big league rosters, had five players drafted in the 2010 MLB Draft. Chad Bettis became the fourth highest drafted Red Raider when the Colorado Rockies selected the three-year Tech lettermen in the second round (No. 76 overall). One-year Tech standout Bobby Doran was drafted in the fourth round by the Houston Astros (No. 123 overall). Bettis and Doran marked the first Red Raider pitching duo to be drafted in the top five rounds since 1994 (Ryan Nye - 2nd Round (PHI), Eric Newman - 5th Round (SD). Left-handed pitcher Jay Johnson was drafted in the 26th round by the Toronto Blue Jays, catcher Jeremy Mayo went in the 31st round to the Washington Nationals and right-handed pitcher Brett Bruening was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 42nd round. It was the fifth time since 2004 that Tech has had at least five draft picks. Overall, Texas Tech has had 100 players drafted in the MLB Draft since 1969.
TEXAS TECH NEWCOMERS The Red Raiders’ 2011 roster will have several new faces, 17 to be exact. And if you toss in the four players who sat out all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, that number of newcomers reaches into the 20’s. But that doesn’t mean Tech’s roster will have inexperience overall. Several of Tech’s newcomers have received high school All-America honors while shortstop Kelby Tomlinson was tabbed a JUCO All-American at Seward County last season and Andre Wheeler (OF/LHP), Daniel Coulombe (LHP) and Taylor Christian (RHP) have been selected in the MLB Draft during their baseball careers. POPESCU IS LONE SENIOR FOR RED RAIDERS The Red Raider roster has one very familiar theme, and infield Nick Popescu doesn’t meet the criteria. Every player besides Popescu will have remaining years of college eligibility left after this season as Popescu is the lone senior for the Red Raiders. After watching several juniors sign in the MLB Draft last season, Popescu will be the only player on the Tech roster that will be recognized on Red Raider Senior Day in May. JOHNSON BECOMES FIRST RED RAIDER FROM ILLINOIS SINCE 1993 Zach Johnson’s birth certificate reads: Lubbock, Texas, while both parents attended and graduated from Texas Tech but Zach Johnson’s hometown is Champaign, Ill., making him the first Texas Tech player from the state of Illinois since 1993 (Jason Brooks, Mt. Vernon, Ill.). Johnson is a freshman right-handed pitcher who graduated from Saint Thomas More High School, where he went 8-1 with a 1.09 ERA in 64.2 innings pitched in 2010. RED RAIDER BIRTHDAYS DURING 2011 SEASON Two Red Raiders will celebrate their birthdays on a gameday this season. Left-handed pitcher Zach Fowler will turn 22 on Feb. 27 – the fourth game of the season when Texas Tech hosts Northern Illinois in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. The lone senior on the team, Nick Popescu, will celebrate his 22nd birthday on get-away day in Manhattan, Kan., as Texas Tech plays its final game of the Kansas State series on national television (FSN) on Saturday, April 23. Five other Tech players will celebrate a birthday during the season, but will have their birthday land on an off-day.
