2013 National Champion Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team. The team competes under the American Stock Horse Association (ASHA), Stock Horse of Texas Association (SHOT) and the Ranch Horse Association of America (RHAA). Many Ranch Horse Team members have claimed individual championship titles in ASHA, SHOT and RHAA.
The Texas Tech Ranch Horse team got its start in 2004 when Kris Wilson, who now works for the Bell Ranch near Tucumcari, N.M., was earning his doctoral degree at Tech. As a nod to the many working ranches in West Texas, Wilson planned to create an equestrian team that incorporated a ranching flavor. With support from the Department of Animal & Food Sciences Department, within the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, he created the nationโs first ranch horse program. In the spring of 2005 the first team was assembled. They traveled Texas competing in the Stock Horse of Texas Association (SHOT). The concept caught on, and colleges across Texas and the nation have since developed their own teams, which compete annually at the National Collegiate Championship Show held by the American Stock Horse Association (ASHA). Tech competes against Texas schools such as Texas A&M University, Tarleton State University and West Texas A&M. Some of the non-Texas universities are Clemson University, New Mexico State University and the University of Nebraskaโs College of Technical Agriculture.
