WELCOME TO THE TETON COUNTY/ JACKSON PARKS AND RECREATION FALL 2016 ACTIVITY GUIDE After an action packed summer full of exciting events and programs, we are turning our attention to the opportunities of fall. As kids return to school, one of our biggest priorities is to provide a variety of engaging after school programs and after school care for our community’s youth.

Through collaboration with many local youth organizations, we have almost doubled our program occupancy, all while continuing to offer both enriching and exciting activities. There continues to be many programming opportunities for adults; this is a great time to join a fall sports team or participate in an outdoor adventure. No matter your interest, there is something for everyone.

Fall is a great time to explore the many parks and trails throughout our beautiful valley. The Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department offers and maintains over 35 miles of pathways, 14 park areas, and in December, our extensive trail grooming program will offer several Nordic and skate skiing trails.

Fall also brings many families back to the pool – with swim lessons kicking off in September and toddler swim returning to 5 days a week.

As the weather turns crisp, be sure to look to the Recreation Center for opportunities to stay active, whether in the pool or in one of our many group fitness classes.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY FOR PROPER FEES

The Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center first opened its doors in December 1994. The Recreation Center has a full size basketball court, a 25 yard 8 lane lap pool, therapy pool, leisure pool, 185’ water slide with splash down pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room. We also provide a variety of fitness classes in both the multipurpose room and gym.

Check-in is required at the front desk of the center. At check-in, guests are asked to pay the entry fee, based on either residency or non-residency. Locals present a recreation center resident card.

Gym shoes must be worn in the gym. Street shoes, boots or marking shoes are not permitted. We appreciate it if you carry in your shoes.

An adult must accompany children in the water whom are less than 3 1/2 feet tall and must remain in the aquatic facility with children under eight years old.

An adult must accompany children under eight years old in the gym.

Please report any damaged or broken equipment to the front desk staff.

Compliance with facility rules is imperative. Facility rules are posted in their respective areas and have been designed for patron safety.

The recreation center is a tobacco, drug and alcohol free facility.

Patrons may bring in their own lock for use in the locker room. Locks are also available at the front desk of the recreation center.

A Wyoming Driver’s license with a Teton County address, rent receipt, property tax receipt, car registration, copy of voter registration, or current utility bill can be used as proof of residency. Recreation center staff must verify residency to qualify. To receive resident rates, a resident ID card must be purchased for $10. The card is valid for two years.

PUNCH CARDS Each punch card holder must purchase a resident ID card. Each resident ID card holder can have “punches” electronically added to this card. A $5 fee will be charged for lost cards. Punch cards purchased for the recreation center give access to the recreation center facilities, but do not include programs. Other punch cards are available for some programs such as water aerobics and fitness classes. Punch cards are for the individual whose name appears on the card, and are not transferable to friends and/or other family members. Non-resident punch cards are also available. Punch cards do not expire, and unused punches are NON-REFUNDABLE.

RECREATION CENTER FACILITY RENTALS Groups can rent the recreation center for an hour or all night. The center is available after regular hours.

LOCKERS Patrons may bring their own lock for use in the locker room, or they are available at the front desk.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES The recreation center has a meeting room that is perfect for birthday parties. Make a splash, and then use the party room to open presents or eat cake. An adult must accompany children in the water whom are less than 3 1/2 feet tall and must remain in the aquatic facility with children under 8 years old. An inflatable bounce-around has been added to the birthday party inventory of activities available for use in the gym.

If the bounce-around is requested, an additional fee will be required and it must be reserved in advance.

Parents, please note: alcohol is prohibited in the recreation center. Birthday parties require a 48-hour prior reservation. Call 739-9025 or stop by the recreation center front desk to make arrangements.

US Coast Guard approved lifejackets are available for use in the aquatic area at no charge.

No additional flotation devices can be brought into the aquatic area. (noodles, floatation suits, blow-up toys, rings, etc.)

All children under the age of three must wear either a disposable or re-usable swim diaper, both are available at the front desk.

Proper swimming attire is required.

Diving board hours may vary according to patron attendance and number of staff.

There is a five-minute rest period / bathroom break every hour on the hour (i.e. @ 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, etc) during open swim hours. This affects all guests under 18 years of age. Adult lap swimmers will not be asked to get out of the water.

HEIGHT AND AGE REQUIREMENTS FOR CHILDREN AT THE RECREATION CENTER An adult must accompany children in the water whom are less than 3 1/2 feet tall and must remain in the aquatic facility with children under eight years old. This guideline is set not only for children’s safety but for parental assurances as well.

FITNESS

GROUP FITNESS CLASSES Classes may be added and the schedule can be altered each month. Current schedules are available at the front desk of the recreation center or online. Classes and class times are subject to change. Fitness classes are geared toward adults and teens that are age 16 and over. Classes take place in the multi-purpose room and the gymnasium of the recreation center. Classes during summer months often go outside.

ZUMBA®

YOGA

The Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba® class!

Join us for an invigorating workout for the union of the mind and body though slow and controlled movement and conscious breathing. We offer different styles with different instructors. All fitness levels are encouraged to attend.

KETTLEBELLS Kettlebell training focuses on muscle power and endurance for the entire body. Kettlebells demand your full concentration and engage secondary muscles you wouldn’t normally use in most workouts.

Come and get a full body workout while learning new and challenging exercises each week.

TOTAL FITNESS Strength training and toning is the primary focus of the class. Resist-a-balls, Bosu balls, kettlebells, stretch tubes, body bars, weights and other equipment will be used to accomplish your fitness goals.

SPINNING Spinning classes are a great cardio workout that get you in shape for all sports especially summer riding.

Spinning classes tend to be more popular during the winter and spring months when outdoor cycling is not available due to weather and surface conditions. The class size is currently limited to nine participants due to a limited number of bikes. Classes are on a first-come first-serve basis. All levels are encouraged to attend.

BOOT CAMP An early morning workout including strength training and toning for the before-work crowd. Resist-aballs, stretch tubes, medicine balls and weights are used to accomplish an all body workout with great instruction.

WATER FITNESS Working out in the water is one of the best and easiest ways to improve muscle tone, realize cardiovascular benefits and have fun while doing it. There is no strain on joints and can be more effective than a gym workout in a fraction of the time. Our water fitness classes incorporate the use of equipment to maximize water resistance in all dimensions of movement, providing full range of motion and increased flexibility.

Monday, Wednesday & Friday classes are held in chest deep water. Participants do not need to have any swimming ability to join in. Classes on Tuesdays and Thursday are usually held in deep water.

Participants must be comfortable in water over their head.

SNOWSPORTS FITNESS (AKA Ski Fitness) This fun and challenging course is designed to help get you in shape for winter sports by providing a method to increase fitness levels, create endurance, and to help prevent injuries.

It is available to everyone in the community: students to seniors, skiers to snowboarders, hockey players to skate skiers. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace. Class instruction provided by Susan Colligan, Jay Shervin and additional assistance by Whitney Wright.

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS

SWIM LESSONS

With our progressive swimming program, your child will move from being a first time Guppie all the way up to a Seal - cruising through the water with ease! These classes are a great experience in skill development and social adjustment for children three to five years of age that have some aquatic experience. Kindergarten children may go into preschool or grade school lessons. These classes operate on a small student/teacher ratio. Guppies will now have a maximum of four children per instructor to ensure your child learns to enjoy and respect the water. Other classes require a minimum of four children enrolled to conduct a class.

These American Red Cross progressive programs are for anyone over six years of age. Classes encourage all participants to reach their maximum potential as a swimmer. Kindergarten children may go to preschool or grade school lessons. A minimum of four students must be enrolled in order to conduct the class.

GUPPIES

LEVEL 3

Non-swimmer, not water adjusted or the first time in a group lesson without a parent. This class emphasizes water adjustment and learning how to enjoy and respect the water.

POLLIWOGS Polliwog participates must have completed Guppies.

Non-swimmer, has been water adjusted. This class will work on introductory swimming skills.

TADPOLES Tadpole participants must have completed Polliwogs.

Develop front and back skills. Fundamentals of the front crawl stroke, breath control, and deep-water adjustment are covered.

LEVEL 1 This class is geared to help students feel comfortable in the water and to be able to enjoy the water safely.

LEVEL 2 This level two class provides students with opportunities for success in fundamental skills.

Front/back floating and front crawl are taught.

Continuation of level three skills with an emphasis on front crawl, back crawl and introduction of the butterfly.

LEVEL 4 The purpose of this class is to build student confidence and performance of the swimming strokes learned in level 3 by providing additional practice.

LEVEL 5 This level five class provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.

FROGS

SWIM LESSONS The Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of swim lessons for persons six months of age and older. The aquatot and preschool programs were designed by professional staff to provide the best opportunity for individuals to reach their potential. The American Red Cross program is utilized for grade school lessons. All instructors must complete an extensive training program designed by American Red Cross professionals. Our instructors are sensitive to the apprehensions and fears of the beginner swimmer, yet seek to challenge and stimulate the more advanced swimmer. Be sure to check our specialty classes. There is a class designed for everyone with a desire to improve their swimming ability.

AQUA TOTS Aqua Tots is a program providing six month to threeyear-old children and their parent(s) an opportunity to learn and experience the fun of swimming together. A minimum of four children must be enrolled to conduct the class. Swim diapers are required for the Aqua Tot program.

Frog participants must have completed the Tadpole course. Can swim 20 feet and knows the basics of rhythmic breathing. Along with increasing rhythmic breathing, backstroke skills and endurance will be developed.

OTTERS Otters must have completed the Frog course. Can swim 15 yards and introduction of the elementary backstroke. Under water swimming and endurance swimming are stressed.

SEALS Seals must be able to swim 25 yards front crawl, 15 yards backstroke. Breaststroke is introduced along with more emphasis on endurance training.

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS We also offer private swimming lessons for youth or adults. If you are interested in lessons for yourself or a child call the private lesson line at 732-8484. A time will be arranged that is convenient for both student and instructor. All lessons must be paid two days in advance. No refunds if cancellation is made less than 24 hours in advance. The fee for private lessons is $40 per one half hour for one student or $32.50 per one half hour per student.

CPR/FIRST AID CLASSES

RACES & SPECIAL EVENTS

The content within the AID/CPR/AED program reflects the most current scientific recommendations, and includes the knowledge and skills necessary for participants to safely identify and give appropriate care, regardless of the type of the emergency. This program stresses the basic steps to follow in any emergency, beginning with the most important step - the decision to act - and helps participants confront their fears of getting involved and giving care. The American Red Cross program explains the emergency medical services (EMS) system, emphasizes the need for rapid medical assistance in and emergency and provides instruction on appropriate care for a variety of injuries and sudden illnesses that first responders may encounter in their workplaces, communities and homes.

SCUBA-OPEN WATER CLASSES Join Gary McConnell at the recreation center pool to begin your underwater diving experience. Each class is set up on an individual basis to meet the times of both the students and instructor. Please call Gary for more information or to set up a time, 739-0850.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department will be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. This course will certify an individual to become a non-surf lifeguard.

Participants must be able to meet or pass all course prerequisites listed below. Books for the course may be picked up at registration time and participants are advised to read course material before the class begins. For more information, contact the pool staff at 739-9025. WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE The Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department will be offering an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course. This 36 hour course is dedicated to developing the skills you will need to instruct and plan courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program.

Participants must be able to meet or pass all course prerequisites below. The cost for the course is $175.00 and is payable at the time of registration.

Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Race 24TH ANNUAL

VOLUNTEERS

NEEDED

A great way to start your Thanksgiving Day festivities. The 24th Annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Race will take place on November 24th. This 5K race offers categories for both walkers and runners and fun for the entire family.

The race begins and finishes at the recreation center. Prizes will be awarded for overall and category winners. We’ll have race t-shirts and post race refreshments available for all participants.

NFL PUNT, PASS & KICK September 23rd | 3:00 pm Show your skills! This is a national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 to compete separately against their peers in a fun and engaging forum. This event is free and will be held at the Alpine Field.

THANKSGIVING TURKEY SHOOT November 19th | 10:00 am Win a turkey! We turn the Recreation Center gym into indoor archery range for this fun festive event. Boys and girls ages 7 – 18 compete for the chance to take home the turkey by being the best shot. This event is free.

Newsflash from the North Pole….

Santa is coming to our holiday party! This is your chance to visit with Santa, get a picture or two, play in the pool, bounce around in the bounce house, make holiday crafts and have some holiday fun!

Toddler Parties are appropriate for children ages up to 5 years old. No preregistration is required, the fee is $2.50 for all individuals over the age of 24 months. Parents must be in attendance at all times during the party.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

After School Programs KIDS CLUB

Kid’s Club provides a safe, supervised environment afterschool for students K-2nd to learn social skills and expand school day learning. Our goal is to offer an enriching program that: provides opportunities to make new friends, fosters academic success develops core competencies and basic skills, and promotes having fun. Kid’s Club activities include age/grade appropriate games, crafts, reading, music, dance, fun educational lessons, and recreational play.

AFTER THE BELL ACTIVITIES After the Bell Activities are for middle school students in sixth through eighth grades. Activities meet one day a week, after school in the Middle School Commons for a six or eight week session. We employ community experts to help participants learn more about a particular activity/ hobby. Look for more information coming home with your students this fall!

Climbing Club Wednesdays: Sept 14- Oct 26 3:45-5:30pm

NO SCHOOL DAY ADVENTURES No school day but you still have to work? No problem! Kids can join the Kids Club and Colter Club staff for a full day adventure. Swimming, Snowshoeing, Art, Science, and so much more!

Registration is on a per day basis and costs $45 per day. We will meet every day at the Davey Jackson Elementary school between 8:30am and 9:30am. Participants need to come prepared to be outside with their “Big Five”, a sack lunch (nothing that needs microwaved), water bottle, and swim gear. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided. Groups will return to the school by 4:30pm every day, and students must be picked up by 5:30pm.

COLTER DISCOVERY CLUBS Our Colter Discovery Clubs offer opportunities for youth in 3rd through 5th grade to discover, explore and ignite interest in activities and hobbies around Teton County. Clubs meet after school in the Colter Cafeteria. Discovery Clubs employ community experts to help participants learn more about a particular activity or hobby. Look for brochures to come home from school, at the Recreation Center, or online at tetonparksandrec.org. Cost varies, but typically runs around $10.00 per day.

Archery

We are proud to offer an extensive archery program at our indoor range located in the Recreation Center gym. Try Archery teaches students range safety and whistle commands, get fitted for equipment, and learn the steps of shooting a bow and arrow. Students will receive a Range Pass upon successful completion of this class. Youth and adults are welcome to take the Try Archery course and then utilize our Open Range on Mondays & Wednesdays. Explore Archery is a six week introductory program to the lifelong sport of target archery while taking part in both individual and team building activities. Students can also participate in Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD), a program for youth 8-20 years old to further their interest in target style archery. The JOAD program is part of USA Archery which is the governing body of Archery in the United States. Participants earn pins as they progress through the different levels. GTNP FALL COLORS AND ELK BUGLING OUTING

Join us to experience a local, classic route. We plan to hike from the Cache Creek Trailhead to the Game Creek Trailhead. Plan to hike 10 miles on this point to point hike with an approximate 1300’ elevation gain.

Transportation, shuttle and guide are provided.

This driving tour will travel to various locations within Grand Teton National Park for fall color and wildlife viewing and listening to the elk bugle. Light picnic dinner and transportation provided. Trip will depart from and return to the recreation center. Registration takes place at the recreation center. Dress warm and bring water, binoculars and a national park pass or be prepared to pay at park entrance fee.

TWILIGHT HIKE IN THE LAURENCE S. ROCKEFELLER PRESERVE Spend a late afternoon and early evening enjoying fall colors and hiking the Lake Creek and Woodland Trails to Phelps Lake fr om the Rockefeller Preserve in Grand Teton National Park. Plan to pack trail snacks or a light dinner to enjoy on the shore of Phelps Lake and perhaps be serenaded by bugling elk in the area. Plan to hike approximately 4 miles over easy to moderate terrain.

PUTTING YOUR GARDEN TO BED

TAEKWONDO

This is a fundamental program for 1st through 4th grades that focuses on skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and fun! Courses will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Snow King Ballfield.

CACHE CREEK TO GAME CREEK TRAVERSE

Our popular Taekwondo course strives to teach participants courtesy, integrity, perseverance, selfcontrol and indomitable spirit. Classes take place Friday afternoons at the Recreation Center.

The do’s and don’ts of this class, presented by Al Young, will help you get your vegetable and perennial garden ready for spring, so you can get a two week head start. Tips on getting the most out of your garden will be discussed.

HIKE AND LUNCH AT SIGNAL MOUNTAIN LODGE This trail begins near Signal Mountain Lodge in Grand Teton National Park. Signal Mountain Summit offers great views of the Teton Range. Bugling elk can often be heard in this area during the fall. This hike Is approximately 7 miles round trip with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1,000 feet.

Following the hike, plan to stop at Signal Mountain Lodge for lunch. Hikers need to bring a Grand Teton -Yellowstone Park Pass or be prepared to pay a National Park entrance fee.

ADULT CROSS COUNTRY SKI AND SNOWSHOE OUTINGS Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department offers adult cross country ski and snowshoe outings to different locations throughout Jackson Hole. Transportation and guides are provided. Trips are rated easy, moderate or difficult to give participants an idea of the difficulty involved. Trip difficulty is determined by length of trip, variety of terrain and elevation gain and loss.

Skiers and snowshoers need to be well prepared and provide their own cross-country ski equipment or snowshoe equipment. Detailed season schedules will be available at the recreation center and on our website at www.tetonparksandrec.org

ADULT INTRODUCTION TO RIVER KAYAKING

Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department and Rendezvous River Sports have partnered to help you enjoy kayaking the Snake River. If you have never kayaked or have minimal experience in a closed-cockpit boat, this is the course for you! Being a competent swimmer with a taste for water and fun is all that is required. This course will give you a solid background of kayaking basics and allow you to have fun on the river. Learn about river kayaks, basic paddle strokes, river features and river safety during this two day course on the Snake River.

It doesn’t matter if you are 15 and it’s your first, you are 75 and it’s your late husband’s cherished classic, or you are somewhere in between and just want to know more about your vehicle. Get your hands a little dirty (don’t worry we provide the rags and soap) and join us this fall as we explore basic vehicle care, preventative maintenance, and safety.

Moms do you want to spend some time with your son? Dads do you want to show your ‘baby’ girl how to take care of a car? Parents and Grandparents bring your child or grandchild along as we explore how to safely perform basic vehicle care and preventative maintenance this fall. These interactive classes are tailored to safely include children ages 8 and up.

All programs will take place at Able Auto.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHTBULB... IN A SUBARU? This is not your grandpa’s Chevy where all you needed was a screwdriver. Newer vehicles have smoother lines, hidden bolts, and easily broken plastic parts. We demonstrate how to change out light bulbs and wiper blades, how to check battery connections and tire pressure, and clean or replace air filters. Learn tips, basic troubleshooting, safety precautions, and easy fixes.

HELP! MY CAR WON’T START! Running late to work, turn the key, won’t start.

Calling a towing service takes time, and is sometimes necessary, but not always. In many instances this situation can be prevented. Find out what kills a battery? When is it a fuel issue? Learn basic battery maintenance, electrical safety and troubleshooting, tips to get it to the shop, and how to use jump packs and cables.

PREPARING FOR A ROAD TRIP Going to Grandma’s? Headed to hike the Appalachian Trail? We all know taking the family across the country involves planning and preparation. Living and traveling in Wyoming with water, snacks, and an extra set of shoes is common, but when was the last time you checked the percentage of wear on your car’s brake pads?

The condition of the belts on the motor? We’ll walk you through a checklist of your vehicle’s critical systems that you don’t want failing at midnight on an abandoned stretch of road or after taking the wrong exit in New York. Learn the essential tools to take with you and how to use them safely. Get hands on experience, questions answered, tips for basic repairs, and take home materials to get you started.

Coed Soccer provides a welcoming environment for you to develop and hone your skills, exercise and meet new people. In this league teams must have a minimum of 2 women and no more than 5 players on the court during play.

PICKLEBALL Grab a partner and come sign up for our 6 week long Pickleball league. All abilities are welcome. Team’s statistics will be tracked throughout and then seeded for the tournament which will be played the last 2 weeks. Prizes will be awarded.

GROOMING SCHEDULE:

Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department’s trail grooming season will begin December 12, 2016 and end March 11, 2017. Grooming is done as snow and weather conditions permit.

Due to the avalanche risk on the Game Creek and Upper Cache Trails, those trails will only be groomed during low and moderate avalanche conditions. All trails are groomed for classic and skate skiing. Please do not walk in the groomed classic ski tracks. Dogs are permitted on ski trails, however some locations require dogs to be on a leash. Mutt-mitts are available at all trailheads. Please note, due to Teton County School District regulations, dogs, whether leashed or not, are not permitted on school district athletic fields, including groomed ski trails.
