B

eing true to yourself is one of the most empowering things a woman can do. Being a young adult is the period of life where you bloom into who you wish to be. Bloom into who you are, find out your interests, and where you want to go. Being unapologetically yourself is the key to pure happiness.

This issue shows a variety of creativity, beauty, and strength a young woman can have. It also expresses living a healthy lifestyle as I find important. Many people str­­uggle with being themselves along with expressing who they are. It’s so easy to follow a trend or a certain diet because someone else is successful or looks good doing it. It’s also easy to be afraid to be different. Finding that balance for yourself is what growing up is all about.

I have struggled with this myself. For me, many years of becoming an adult has been an endless journey of never being happy with who I am. Being scared of what others may think. I have decided to change my outlook on life, and be completely and utterly myself. Finding what happiness means to me, and never looking back.

Some things I enjoy are decorating my home, working out, reading blogs, and finding new healthy recipes. My mission for this issue is to include some of these things in hopes of your enjoyment too.

Walk through life the right way

is Strong Female Full Body Workout

21 year old Jarrica Speidel starts each workout with 1 scoop of PEScience pre-workout to give her fuel & energy.

It is essential to stretch before working out to avoid sore muscles or injury.

The first two exercises are focusing on the shoulder muscles.

Jarrica did a superset of lateral raises (left) and standing siingle-arm shoulder press (right).

Next up are squats! Squats are great for lower body muscles. This compound exercise hits quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and many other muscles such as the lower back.

Hip abduction is one of Jarrica’s go to exercises to get rid of hip dips. Both these exercises work different muscles as the movements are opposite directions, but esentially are good for hip mobility.

BACK ATTACK! Lateral Pulldown is a compound upper body exercise that targets back muscles.

Jarrica finished her workout with knee raises which worked her abs. She did these until failure.

xpressing yourself and not caring about the opinion of others is hard for many. This isn’t the case for 21 year old Taylor Hauser. Taylor currently attends the Univesrity of Northern Iowa as a textiles and apparel and business administration major. Expressing herself through clothing and fashion started at a young age. She grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa where she attended a small Catholic school as a child where it was a requirement to wear uniforms. Taylor says, “I was constantly trying to add some sort of individuality whether that was colorful socks, scarves, or headbands.” However, her real interest began when her mom took her to New York City as a 10 year old.

In high school Taylor’s love for fashion and clothing trends grew, but there were a few bumps along the way. She took a sewing class that was absolutely terrible for her. “I couldn’t even sew a straight line.” says Taylor. This was very discouraging for her as she knew fashion was something she wanted to pursue as a future career. She thought there was no way she could succeed in the industry or go to school for fashion, but luckily, there’s a lot more to the fashion industry than sewing and designing on a computer.

In college, Taylor learned how far her passion can really take her and help her succeed. She has the chance to learn about all the different dimensions of the fashion industry.

“I was absolutely obsessed with fashion and being different. One year I got bangs, another year I got a perm, one year I started drawing on all my shoes.”

“When I was younger I used to try on several outfits, take pictures of them, print them, and hang them up in my closet so I wouldn’t forget.”

This semester she is in a class called computer aided design where students learn how to design their prints on Adobe programs and Kaledo. She then prints out the patterns on fabric. Taylor is also in a textile structures class where she gets to learn about how to actually construct different kinds of weaves and knits through the Kaledo program.

Taylor has her own blog called Your Personal Taylor. This is also her very first blog, and is her own style outlet to share her passions with others.

Eventually she wishes to turn it into a lifestyle blog.

Above is one of the patterns that was printed on fabric for one of the dresses taylor made for class. This dress will be featured in the UNI Fashion Show.

Taylor poses in a business casual outfit she styled to wear to work for an internship. She says the key to having the perfect closet is having more good staple items and less items you won’t re-wear.

Every year, UNI puts on a fashion show. The show is called the “catwalk�, which is a signature event for the program and brings in a large crowd each year. It has also been a tradition at UNI for around 20 years. Taylor has been on a model committee previously, where she helped with recruitment, fit sessions, choreograph, and dress rehearsals. This year she will be having the projects she made in flat pattern and draping on the runway.

Being a fashion major is all about showing your inner creativity. What better opportunity for a fashion major than to study abroad? Taylor studied

abroad in Florence, Italy at Florence University of the Arts during the Spring semester of 2018. This was a huge opportunity for her as she got a better understanding of the global fashion industry and how trends flow from runway to consumer. She got to do several hands on trend projects including distinguishing what collections seen at Milan fashion would be good for fast fashion brands, contemporary, and luxury. Aside from her projects, she also got to meet a variety of new people, eat miraculous italian food, and also be a tourist around the country on her free time.

Taylor has already had a head start on her career as she interned for Women’s Swimwear at Lands’ End last summer. She describes merchandising as being “the ultimate voice of the customer.” Merchandising is also determining what colors, trends, and silhouettes are best for the customer through analyzing sales, trend forecasting, and having to communicate that to design and product development. During her internship with Lands’ End she learned that at the end of the day, merchandising wants to make sure the company is making product that’s sellable.

This summer she will be working for Express Corporate in Columbus, Ohio in their menswear division. She will also be traveling to New York City for a period of time during this position, which is what she is most excited about since falling in love with the city as a child. This internship will give Taylor a great experience for when she

looks for real world jobs after she graduates in December 2019. After graduating she hopes to receive a job in merchandising and move to New York City. “Working for a large private retailer in the city has definitely been my dream for a while.” says Taylor. With her passion and experience, she is sure to conquer the world of fashion.

“I love merchandising because it’s a great mixture. You have to be very analytical but creative at the same time.”

A huge part of styling an outfit is within the details, says Hauser. The details here are the pink scarf as a statement used to pop out, and the snake skin boots with the buttons on the side of the pants together.

INGREDIENTS: 1 chai tea bag 1 cup of water 1/2 tbsp vanilla Honey to taste 1 cup of milk Handful of ice

METHOD: Brew the tea bag and let steep for 5 minutes.

Allow chai tea to cool to room temperature.

Place the ice in your class, followed by the vanilla, chai tea, and milk. Stir & Enjoy!
