ay can only mean one thing – the great British summer is finally on its way. With two bank holidays to look forward to and, hopefully, some sunny days and warm evenings, it’s a brilliant time to get outside and enjoy some delicious, lighter wines (and great food) alfresco.

New Zealand doesn’t just produce great sauvignon blanc – it’s also started Medium dry creating some very impressive whites using pinot grigio grapes. Wairau Cove Pinot Grigio, £6, is light gold in colour and has attractive honeysuckle, peach and nectarine aromas, with background hints of spiced pear. Make sure you have a bottle or two in the fridge for the weekend and enjoy with Indian-inpired dishes, such as the Spiced king prawn pilaf (p69). 2

finest* Albariño, £7. Made from the albariño grape in the Rías Baixas Dry region of north-west Spain, this wine is incredibly fresh, with apple and pear flavours. Cool and crisp, it’s perfect for sunny days, and delicious with shellfish. 1

Warmer weather is the perfect opportunity to experiment with chilling Light and red wine. Beaujolais fruity Villages, £6, is a juicy little fruit bomb made from the gamay grape, and is medium bodied with blackcurrant and raspberry flavours. Pop it in the fridge for 30 minutes before opening, and serve with tomato-based dishes, such as ratatouille or bruschetta. B

If you love a glass of chilled 2 rosé in the fresh air, try finest* Sancerre Rosé, Medium £9. Sancerre is famous dry for its white wines made from sauvignon blanc, but the region’s favourite red grape, pinot noir, produces elegant rosé wine. With a gorgeous, delicate pink colour and flavours of summer fruit, this is fabulous with poached salmon.

finest* Steillage Riesling, £6, is a freshtasting German white with Medium a naturally lower alcohol content of 11%. With punchy peach and lemon flavours, it’s a good match for Asian dishes such as the Miso cod skewers (p65). 4

If you prefer to keep off alcohol altogether, try the new finest* Alcohol Medium Free Sparkling Chenin dry Blanc, £2·75. Made using wine grapes to ensure maximum flavour, fermentation is stopped before the natural sugars in the grape juice are converted into alcohol. This medium-dry fizz would be lovely with an alfresco lunch or afternoon tea, or poured over ice as a refreshing long drink. 2
