Get Ready For The Fall Season of Sports Editor’s Note - Terry L. Watson Now that the summer season is coming to a close, it is now time to prepare for the fall season of sports. Understandably, a massive amount of football (from the little league to the professional level) is sure to satisfy the appetites of sports enthusiast. Football is happily welcomed back, while it fills a void in the sports world created by the conclusion of the basketball season in May. The traditions that have developed from fall sports have helped to shape and mold the lives of individuals and families. They have allowed families to unite in support, whether it be in support of a family member who is playing, or just rooting for their favorite teams. The joy and excitement from these experiences gives everyone a reason to talk smack, laugh, and cheer for no reason at all. So as the season changes and the daylight becomes shorter, try to find your way to a football field or basketball court. It doesn’t matter if you are a player or just a fan, there is something there for us all. In the fall, you belong.

Meac Retires The Mortgage On Its Headquarters Property Information Provided By www.Onnindan.com
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has officially paid off the mortgage on its headquarters. The conference announced that it is the only Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conference to own its headquarters. “We are very pleased with being 100-percent owner of our building, valued at over $1 million,” MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas said. “We have been very frugal in our expenses and were able to generate positive revenue. We were very fortunate not to have to assess our membership any fees in order to retire the mortgage on the building.” Located just minutes from Norfolk International Airport, the MEAC office is a one-story, 8,500-square foot facility with ample parking situated in Norfolk Commerce Park along Robin Hood Road. It has served as the conference’s official headquarters since 2010. “The MEAC made a wise decision many years ago to purchase the building housing its headquarters,” Dr. David Wilson, president of Morgan State University and chair of the MEAC Council of Chief Executive Officers, said. “We are thrilled to now burn the mortgage papers and completely own our facility. The Council of Chief Executive Officers thanks Commissioner Thomas for his stellar stewardship of the MEAC for the last 16 years.” S

Kahlil Coley By Terry L. Watson Photos by JLG Photography
Eight year old Kahlil Coley of Greensboro is not the kind of kid that sits around waiting for something to do. Instead, he finds a way to entertain himself, whether it be indoors or outside. As a third grader, he has set goals for himself to be the very best person and athlete he can be. He is the shooting guard for the Blue Devils youth basketball team in Greensboro and is excited about what the current season will become. Kahlil Coley thrives in the game of basketball. “I’m good at stealing the ball,” he simply puts it. “Playing sports has helped me to become a much better person.” His athletic strengths are his speed (running), teamwork, and confidence. Kahlil also plays Flag Football. As a player for the Blue Devil he as received trophies and various accolades, but none of those means more to his parents than to see their son learning how to become part of something much bigger than himself.
“My goal is to become a better defensive player and shooter. I know I will have to practice to achieve that and I am determined to do so.”

HerbalAlpha’s Top 10 Tips To Avoid the Freshman 15, 20 and 30 One of the common themes that come along with the fall is: the excitement of getting away from the parents and getting back around peers. For some it is the return to a place that they can truly call a home. For others, it is their first experience with this much freedom. What is this place? College…the gateway to the “free world” of choice and decisions. The goal of this article is to give college students, and even adults, practical information to get healthy and maintain it. Have A Strong Why: This is consistent with any goal that you have. You MUST have a reason that is going to keep you consistent. Your WHY is your WHY. Others don’t need to understand it. It just needs to be relevant for you. Set A Goal: Since we are talking about a short time period, pick out a goal that is attainable in the time period given. Most college students are going for the aesthetic appeal (good looks, healthy lifestyle, energy, etc). Aim for a goal that will present the best you Create a system to track your progress: In the age of the smart phone, take your before pictures and journal your journey. Be sure to get your starting numbers so that you have an accurate journey. Announce your journey on social media: Your goals are important to you but an announcement on social media helps to hold you accountable to your social circle and helps with #3. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions: Make the right choices in friends, acquaintances and activities...especially those that are geared towards behaviors that don’t benefit your goals. It’s OK to say “NO” to something or someone that is not on the same path of health that you’re on. Some will, some won’t, so what.......say Goodbye to distractions The 80% Difference: The “college budget” is no reason to skimp on your nutrition. Missing up this step is like self sabotage. Most people neglect the 80%, seeking to workout harder to bridge the gap. It doesn’t work like that. Let me ask you this: if you got a 20 out of 20 on a test, that would be a 100% right? Now, what if you got a perfect 20…out of 100? That’s an F. These are #BIGFACTS. Figure out your nutrition and don’t over complicate things. Make healthy choices: lean proteins, veggies, a few fruits, whole grains, plenty of water and good quality supplements. WORK OUT.. More muscle = more calorie burn. So go to the gym, do resistance training and get your cardio in. Here are some simple gym alternatives: go for a walk/run, do some push-ups, pull-ups, squats, etc. Get those muscles moving. If you’re clueless, consult with an experienced fitness trainer. Adult Beverages i.e. Alcohol: One of the most detrimental activities that can be engaged in is binge drinking. Amid the many damages that it can cause in the body, it adds empty calories. A caloric increase typically causes weight gain in all of the wrong places Rest is Essential: You can’t spell with RESulTs without REST. Results happen when you are getting quality sleep. It is suggestible to get at least 6 hours, 8 is optimal.
Have Fun and Don’t Quit: Enjoy the ride. There are peaks and valleys, but the experience is incredible. You owe it to yourself, and those counting on you to be successful. If nothing else in these steps touched you, I hope this resonates with you: You owe YOU the best life, your best and healthiest self. S Bonus Tip: You don’t have to have an in person trainer/coach to be successful. My team is committed to helping clients get results, and that includes you too. The freshman 15-30 is a reality you don’t have to face. Get in contact with us:

Five Reasons to Stay Active During Challenging Times “Why exercise is one of the best antidotes for girls and women during tough economic and emotional times.”
4. Exercise Has Economic Benefits A 1984 study by Brown, et al., explored the monetary gains of regular exercise and its relationship with disability days and the resulting direct costs incurred. They found that workers who participated in a workplace exercise program had 20 percent fewer days of work missed for disability, which, in turn, saved an average of $353.38 annually. And in 2003, the estimated total national cost of physical inactivity was $251.11 billion, while the estimated total national cost for excess weight was $256.57 billion. These numbers include the cost of medical care, worker’s compensation and productivity losses. In these hard economic times, every penny saved counts.
There never seems to be enough time in the summer. The kids are out of school, coworkers are in and out of the office and we are always trying to find our own time to enjoy the weather. With many feeling unprecedented levels of stress in their day-to-day lives, women need physical activity now more than ever. 1. Exercise Is The Ideal Way To Handle Stress It’s not just rhetoric. Exercise has been proven to decrease the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, in your body. Researchers have also found that regular exercise releases endorphins in your body, causing that natural high or euphoric feeling you get after a great workout. One recent study even found that short workouts of eight minutes in length could help lower sadness, tension and anger. 2. Physical Activity Leads To Higher Productivity While it may seem counter-intuitive, research has shown that dedicating time out of your day for physical activity may increase your productivity. In a 2007 study conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation, 78 percent of the 700 participating workers said that exercise had a positive impact on their productivity and performance at work. Additionally, employees who exercised during the workday perceived an impact on their frame of mind and ability to focus at work. Whether you need that energy boost to impress your boss at work or to navigate the holiday crowds, exercise can be the key. 3. Action Can Be Used As A Distraction Physical activity itself can be used to take your mind off the myriad problems that can pop-up unexpectedly. Worried about your out-spoken uncle offending someone at the dinner table? Catch a walk to take your mind off it. Worn out from having your children at-home during their summer breaks? Focusing on yourself and your health, even if only for a short time, can give you a much-needed reprieve.
5. Physical Activity=Professional And Personal Success This benefit of exercise is undeniable: Those who participate in regular activity have higher rates of personal and professional success. According to a study by Colton and Gore, half of all girls who participate in some kind of sport experience higher than average levels of self-esteem and less depression. According to an Oxygen/Markle Pulse poll, 56 percent of women agree with the statement that seeing successful female athletes makes them feel proud to be a woman. And finally, research shows girls who participate in sports are more likely to experience academic success and graduate from high school than those who do not play sports. Need more motivation to help? Research shows legitimate health benefits from being charitable. Allan Luks, author of “The Healing Power of Doing Good,” found many documented instances of people gaining physical, mental and emotional benefits from doing good. Luks also describes something called the “giver’s high,” a similar feeling to the “runner’s high” experienced after a strenuous workout. S
