Where Ever King James Plays, We Will Follow Editor’s Note - Terry L. Watson After his remarkable season, and even taking a much under matched team to the NBA Finals, Lebron James is poised to make a whole lot of noise in the off season. He is one of the best, if not the best basketball player on the planet, yet it appears that his legacy continues to be subjected to scrutiny by a dedicated camp of “King James” haters. Now the question that remains to be answered is where will Lebron play next season. Wherever Lebron James plays next season, one thing is for sure; his fans as well as his haters are sure to follow. Imagine him in a Los Angeles Lakers uniform, standing on the press tables at the Staples Center enacting his pregame ritual. Or putting up 50 points in Boston, but not against the Celtics. The “boos” of today will almost overnight become cheers of tomorrow because no matter where Lebron plays, being fortunate to witness him display his talents as the best to ever play has a way of making fans out of even the toughest critics. Personally, I would love to see him come to Charlotte!

SHANNON GREENE Please Believe Fitness By Terry L. Watson

Photos by Todd Youngblood

At Please Believe Fitness, an environment is created that is intended to encourage, motivate, and re-enforce one common fact. “All things are possible if you truly BELIEVE, and that you can do anything if you truly BELIEVE.” There are no strangers at Please Believe Fitness. When you join their program, one becomes a valued member of the “Please Believe Family”. Their “Believers” (what they refer to their members as instead of clients) help and push each other towards their goals, and to the next level. No matter what their current health and fitness level may be, Please Believe Fitness has a program that fits everyone. The concept of Please Believe Fitness was created about 12 years ago by JD Davis. He started by training clients at a local elementary school in the evening, after working a full time job. He and Shannon Greene later partnered to take his dream to the next level and the rest in history. Shannon has been in the fitness and wellness industry for over five years. She is Personal Training and Group Fitness Certified with AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America). She also specializes in one-on-one personal training and group fitness instruction. Shannon is the second of only two Certified FitRanX Personal Trainers in the state of North Carolina. She is an amateur body builder and placed 1st and 2nd in her perspective categories in the 2017 NPC Muscle Heat Open Figure Class A. She is currently working to achieve her pro card. She is also a Lead Fitness Facilitator with T.O.U.C.H.E.D (Tackling Obesity Using Conditioning Hobbies Education & Diet) where she helps to introduce kids in urban communities to the benefits of exercise and proper nutrition. She is also CPR and First Aid certified.

JD Davis has been in the fitness and wellness industry for 15 years. He is Personal Training and Group Fitness Certified with AFAA and specializes in one-on-one personal training and group fitness instruction. He is the first of only two Certified FitRanX Personal Trainers in the state of North Carolina. He is also a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, and certified through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. JD is also a Nutrition Fitness Specialist certified through the National Association of Sports Medicine. He is a CPR and First Aid Instructor with EMS Safety Services and the Program Director for the Genesis Project Family Wellness Center and the T.O.U.C.H.E.D. Program. PBF one-on-one clients’ sessions are scheduled to meet the needs of those with busy and ever changing lives. Their group sessions offer six classes a day (6:00 am, 10:00 am, 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.). “We know that life sometimes gets in the way and our “Believers” are not locked in or obligated to a specific day or time to attend sessions,” Shannon says. “We also offer nutrition assistance and meal planning with all of our packages at no extra cost.” Shannon says her fitness journey was birthed through failure. Along with JD and a few of his staff members she attended a fitness training in Florida to become Certified FitRanX trainers. Long story short, she didn’t pass the physical conditioning part of the training and wasn’t able to get her certification. “I took the failure to heart. That was a long ride back to Charlotte, but it gave me time to reflect on what I wanted and needed to do. I retested and tried again a month later and passed with flying colors,” she says. Changing lives is what JD and Shannon love most about what they do. “My heart skips a beat every time I receive a call, text, Facebook message or post saying how much I have inspired them on their health and wellness journey. One of my greatness feelings comes when someone tells me that their doctor has taken them off certain medications or even all of their medications because they no longer require them. That is truly an indescribable feeling and its confirmation that I’m making a positive impact in the lives of others,” Shannon says. The plan for Please Believe Fitness is to continue to change lives by introducing people to a healthier and more active lifestyle. In the future they are planning to open a second location possibly in the Rock Hill area that will enable them to provide their knowledge and services to individuals that aren’t able to travel to Charlotte. Shannon also plans to continue to learn as much as possible about changing the human body and apply her findings to her everyday life and the lives of her clients.

Greg White is a easy-going guy but focused on the diamond, giving my team 100% each day, but I enjoy having fun off the field. I enjoy playing and watching basketball, playing video games, hanging out with my friends and spending time with my family.

What do you love most about being an athlete? As an athlete, I love the competition of playing baseball.

SPUNQ SPORTS

What do you think are some of your failures? My failures would be when we (NC A&T) lost last year in the 2017 MEAC Semi-Finals Championship game. If I had a double in that game versus a single, we would be up one run. The loss in the 2017 MEAC Semi-Finals gave me fuel to come back this year; to go harder, stronger, and help my team win the 2018 MEAC Championship. Also, the most recent failure was when we made it to the “big dance” – the 2018 NCAA Baseball Regionals in Chapel Hill, but we did not play our game.

Who or what has impacted your life the most? My little sister. At the age of 13, she a suffered sudden cardiac arrest on the softball field. Because of the quick actions of her teammates, school staff, and the doctors, she is here today. Her doctor’s told her that she would not be able to play softball or volleyball competitively. So I play a little harder because I am playing for the both of us.

What are your biggest insiratons My family are my inspirations. They have sacrificed so much so that I can attend and graduate from college in December 2018, and play the game (baseball) that I love. They have continuously supported me as a person and as an athlete.

What are some of the challenges you face as an athlete? Some are balancing school and playing baseball. I have a good support system around me with my family and NC A&T family.

What are your plans for the future (Baseball and life)? My plans as an athlete in the future is to play professional baseball for a MLB team. After baseball, I would like to work for the federal government, possibly the FBI. I finished my college baseball career leading the team in batting average (.347), second in the MEAC Conference in hits (69), tied for fourth in runs scored (41). I also led the team in multiple-hit games with (20), at-bats with (194), and games started at (54), and total plate appearances of (208). S

Tajma Brown

to Serve in the PGA WORKS Fellowship Program Information Provided by www.africanamericangolfdigest.com

Through the PGA WORKS Fellowship program, Tajma Brown, 24, of Wilmington, Delaware, is blazing new trails for workforce diversification in the game of golf. Brown is one of three people (Jessica Asbury in the Carolinas PGA Section; Christina Paulsen in the New Jersey PGA Section) to serve in the Fellowship program, which has a goal to spread to a total of eight Sections in 2018—and eventually to all 41 PGA Sections nationwide. Over the past year, she has served as a Fellow for the Middle Atlantic PGA Section, spending the majority of her time working on PGA REACH programming and the Section’s foundational activities.

First Black Woman to Own a NASCAR Team Information Provided by www.blog.blackbusiness.org Diversity in sports racing is lacking as only a few people of color are part of racing organizations such as the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). But Melissa Harville-Lebron is a Black American woman that owns a NASCAR team franchise. The 47-year old started her career in the entertainment industry when she worked as an intern at Sony Music. She already launched her own music label in 2005 while working for New York City’s Department of Correction Office. But after a severe asthma attack ten years later, she had to retire early. Yet it seems that it had been a blessing in disguise. In 2014, she took the risk and opened a multifaceted entertainment company, W.M. Stone Enterprises, Inc. She then created E2 Northeast Motorsports and just recently, she signed a deal with NASCAR, making her the first black woman to own a NASCAR team. It all started unexpectedly when she brought her sons, Eric and Enico, to a NASCAR experience event. She told Black Enterprise, “I got invited to a NASCAR experience and I brought my boys along thinking that it would discourage them from driving.”

The PGA WORKS Fellowship is a program of PGA REACH, the 501(c)3 charitable foundation of the PGA of America. The Fellowship aspires to be the most valuable entry-level employment opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds to garner experience in various facets of the golf industry. “We must be drivers for change, not just in golf, but society as well,” said PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua. “Many people turn to sports as inspiration for acceptance, and it is therefore essential that diversity and inclusion are part of our core, as we work to fulfill our mission of serving our Members and growing the game.” S

However, her sons loved the sport even more and so she learned to also love her sons’ passion. As she got more involved in the sport, she noticed the lack of diversity since it is dominated mostly by white males. So she decided to bridge the gap and create her own team. Her team, E2 Northeast Motorsports, is the first multicultural team to race competitively in NASCAR. It consists of four black and Latino drivers, two in the Camping World Truck Series and two in the Whelen All-American Series, and two of which are her sons. On February 16, her team also competed in its first race in the Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) at Daytona where Scott Stenzel finished 15th place at Daytona. In a statement, she said, “This team truly exemplifies diversity that is sure to attract a younger multicultural fan base. It’s an honor to announce that Stenzel is now a part of this racing family.” She also emphasized the relevance of her endeavor. She said, “It’s important for our culture to push generational wealth to our children. It’s important to lead by example. All too often our children see negative images of our culture and I think it’s very important for people of our culture actually succeeding in business.” S

success stories

Kaitlin McGoogan Coach Jimmy and Coach Charlene with New Level Performance have gone above and beyond with taking my daughter’s training to the next level. My daughter is a high school discus and shot-put thrower and had seen success in the discus arena. Since beginning to train at New Level Performance she increased her personal best in shot put by over 5 feet. This increase gained her a 2nd place finish at the 4A NC State Indoor Track and Field Champions and is also #20 on the NC All-Time Indoor list. The gains were also seen in the discus circle. Kaitlin was able to increase her discus by 10 feet. Just this season, Kaitlin has a new Personal Record of 135’5”, which currently places her #36 on the NC All-Time list. Words cannot express the gratitude and thankfulness we have for the New Level Performance team, for the patience and efforts with my daughter. We look forward to even greater success in the future.

Adam Smith The best thing about New Level, Coach Jimmy and Coach Charlene, is that they care about you as a person. The opportunity to play professional football would have never been a possibility without the things that New Level did for me. The thought that goes into each individual workout is so focused, with a purpose for everything. Coach Jimmy helped me find a great agent, talk to NFL, CFL, and Arena scouts, and was able to provide so much for me. But what I’ve gained is a great friendship with the family. I Love the Lamour’s! Contact New Level Performance and allow them to help you to achieve your very best in physical fitness while achieving a healthier style of living.

MARTIAL ARTS By Terry L. Watson Photos by Maurice Weathers The Charlotte Academy of Self-Mastery is a martial arts academy that focuses on leadership development through the use of martial arts study. The school opened its doors on December 4th, 2017 in the West Boulevard shopping center in Charlotte N.C. and is led by Maurice L. Weathers, the head instructor and owner. Being a 17 year student of the martial arts, Sensei Weathers has provided a structured environment of classes with a focus of increasing confidence and self-esteem, building respect for adults and one another, and developing a work ethic to help young adults achieve in every field of human endeavors. Sensei Weathers gets to know each of his students personally and has the highest interest in helping them reach their goals and develop their talents so they will be successful, not only in the dojo but in the classroom as well. It is Sensei’s belief that “if you do not try your best, then you have already failed. Mediocrity is not an option.” Sensei holds such qualifications as 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate, 2nd Degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kobudo, 1st Degree Black Belt in American Kenpo Karate, Balintawak Cuentada Arnis - Level 6 Completion of the Arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Blue Belt. They also offer practical self-defense training for men and women. Their typical clients range in age from four years old, all the way up to adults. CASM offers practical self-defense for children and adults. Their goal is to provide its members with classes that are challenging, both mentally and physically, while maintaining a relatively safe environment.

The Charlotte Academy Of Self-Mastery

One success has been senior student Jonathon DaCosta who has seen a significant improvement in his cardiovascular strength. He has also experienced a 20 lb. weight loss as a result of his martial arts training. His skill level utilizing the self-defense techniques has also greatly improved. Ten year old student J. Burns, who has some physical challenges, has seen improvements with his range of motion, his level of physical fitness, as well as with his discipline and focus in the classroom. Just like any new business, CASM faces the challenges of acquiring and keeping new students. “Our goal is to provide a service to a part of town where it is not readily available and make the pricing for martial arts study affordable and in line with the needs of the surrounding area. We try to do this while still offering a level of service that is far superior to other similar businesses in the area,” Maurice says. “We believe that a child’s total well-being, both psychological and physical, can be strengthened simultaneously. While the physical aspects of exercise and Martial Arts training improve your child’s general health, it also improves emotional health with increased self-esteem and self-confidence and decreases tension, stress, anxiety, and depression”
