Coco Gauff Should Inspire You Editor’s Note - Terry L. Watson This summer, I had to privilege to watch a young female tennis phenom. Cori “Coco” Gauff lit up the tennis world by dominating her opponents in the Wimbledon Tennis competition, including champion Venus Williams. The 15 year old superstar is from Delray Beach, Florida. While she effortlessly advanced to the round of 16, I was inspired by her demeanor and poise from someone so young playing on such a big stage. After winning the match against Williams, her response was “I never played on court so big. I had to remind myself that the lines on the court are the same size. Everything around it might be bigger, but the lines are the same. After every point, I was just telling myself to stay calm.

A humbling experience turned out to be the best for Valerie Newman. In 2014, Newman participated in a relay with several friends, only to have trouble finishing. Newman said it helped reinvigorate her training. “I was pretty fit and had run before with another group the previous year,” Newman said. “This one made me realize how in shape I wasn’t and I didn’t want to hold another group back. I started running with a program in Greensboro called ‘Black Girls Run!’ and started with the ‘Walk Before You Run’ package. My goal was to run a half-marathon.” As time progressed, Newman was able to go from walking to participating in a 5K (the equivalent of 3.1 miles), eventually racing in 10K races (6.2 miles), 15K’s (9.3 miles) and halfmarathons (13.1 miles). With her confidence rising, her goals were rewritten. “I figured it was time to be a part of the ‘one percent’ of marathon finishers,” Newman said. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in her first opportunity to tackle the 26.2-mile race.

“Instead of letting that setback deter me from completed a marathon, I registered for the ‘Rock N’ Roll’ New Orleans Marathon and ran it on February. 28th, 2016. I’ve ran nine marathons now, with three of them being world majors — the Chicago marathon and the New York marathon twice.” Newman hasn’t won any marathons, but she said her goal is simply to finish. “Whatever distance I have, I’ve got a goal to complete it whether I have to run, jog, walk or crawl,” Newman said. “If I commit to something, I’ll do whatever it takes to achieve it. My goal is to have fun, enjoy the run, enjoy the crowds and finish upright and injury-free.”

“My first marathon was originally the Rock N’ Roll Savannah marathon on November 7th, 2015, but at the split when the halfmarathoners finished and full-marathoners pressed forward, the race directors decided to cancel it because of the heat and humidity, which led to a runner dying during the race.

Whatever distance I have, I’ve got a goal to complete it whether I have to run, jog, walk or crawl.

Newman works a busy schedule as a mother of four and full-time employee, but said she makes time for everything. “I’ll get up around 4:30 a.m. to run and on weekends I’ll go out and ride as early as six,” Newman said. “If I don’t do my training in the morning, I’ll do it after work and sometimes on my lunch break. I’ll get three hours of sleep at night sometimes -- I refuse to make excuses.” For Newman, there are additional challenges, but being able to continue her journey helps keep her motivated. “I love the camaraderie between runners,” Newman said. “It’s amazing how runners support and motivate each other. It’s also a way for me to relieve stress and stay in shape. It can be a bit of a challenge when it comes to staying consistent with running, cycling and working out, especially when you’re raising a family. To me, it’s all about balance,” she says. “What inspires me the most is the runners who don’t meet the stereotype of one—those who may never win a race, but push through to finish every time.”

Moving forward, Newman looks to incorporate another passion with her running. “I started cycling on April 15, 2017 and did my first duathlon May 6, 2017,” Newman said. “I completed the Rambling Rose Triathlon in Winston-Salem August 20, 2017 and I’ve cycled as many as 60 miles in the Tour de Llama in 2018. I plan to ride the Tour de Tanglewood in September. I also have a goal to complete an ultra-marathon, which is any distance over (26.2 miles). I’ll continue running while incorporating cycling,” she says. Newman said her advice for others who want to follow in her footsteps is to take it one race at a time. “Trust your training, run your own pace, run your own pace and most importantly, enjoy every minute,” Newman said. “It’s not about winning, it’s about finishing injury-free.” S

JULY 2019

By Junious Smith, III Photos by Troy Harris What started as a passion has turned into so much more for Troy Harris. Harris is the owner of Traction Body and Mind, which is in High Point. Starting the company in 2016 after several years as a personal trainer, Harris said he wanted to start taking matters into his own hands. “I wanted my own place to train, so I ventured out and went into business for myself,” Harris said. “I had gotten laid off for the last time back in 2011 — the company I was working with pulled the rug under us — so I was done with the corporate world for an opportunity to do what I want to do. “My goal was to be fully into fitness and started as a fitness instructor in 2012. A year later, I became a personal trainer and as time went on, I wanted to create my own company. Now, I’ve got Traction Body and Mind, a functional fitness gym where anyone at any level can come in and get a full body workout. I specialize in group and individual training and will go beyond the regular setting.” Harris has done most of his training in Guilford County, but has travelled as far as his hometown in Wilkesboro with a mobile setup. “I’ve turned breakrooms and living rooms into gyms,” Harris said. “I have bars for pullups, resistance bands, equipment to work on balance — really, anything that will fit in the trunk.” Harris graduated from Wilkes Central High School and went to Campbell University for college, but he didn’t participate in sports, finding more of a love for fitness as time progressed. “I’ve become more athletic in my adult life,” Harris said. “I was always a natural athlete, but when I was little, I wanted to be lazy — I could run, but the entire time I thought ‘why?’ As I got older, something kicked in and I started to find that reason.” Harris also looks to help people find reasons to continue coming back, providing a creative experience for clients. “There isn’t one day where we have a similar workout,” Harris said. “I don’t like for them to know what’s going to happen — that’s part of the suspense. I don’t want them to think they’ll know what we’ll work on, but I can guarantee they’ll leave much happier and fitter than when they came in, if they do the work. I don’t want people to think they have to do the same thing over and over in order to reach fitness goals. My goal is to make things enjoyable and fun,” he says. “I’ve also got the Sky Fit training at the trampoline park, so it’s another thing that people can enjoy. I’ve always looked to do something unpredictable and anyone can come in to do a workout — even if someone was missing an arm or a leg, I could find a way to train them.”

JULY 2019

Harris said there are positives and negatives of entrepreneurship but enjoys what he does. “One of the biggest benefits is getting to run the show,” Harris said. “You get the final say on everything and the vision is all yours. The hard part is that not everyone shares your views — some may not have as much passion and you must do a lot on your own to make sure it’s done right, but it’s how I work.” Ultimately, Harris wants to expand on his brand. “In the future, I do want to have a new location — maybe move down a door to where people can see the place down the road,” Harris said. “I’m also working on a website so people can sign up, creating my own shirts and really come up with new and unconventional ways to work out. One of the ideas I’ve been thinking about putting together is HIIT Karaoke, so the goal is to branch out and see what will work in the future. There’s no problem being creative with fitness.” Harris does train in his office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, he trains in the Sky Zone Trampoline Park. There are three training sessions at Traction Body and Mind at 5:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Harris’ sessions at the trampoline park are 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and 10 a.m. on Saturday. By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company For Jackie Williamson her true passion belongs to helping others feel better, particularly through massage. A few years ago she decided becoming a massage therapist would fulfill her dreams. By her own admission she’s had an undercover and nearly undiscovered passion for it for years, but only recently decided to fully pursue it. “I was intrigued in high school. I used to dance and because it’s so physical I learned how to massage myself and even the other dancers and that’s really how I got into it. So over the years I set plans and goals and it has come to pass,” said Williamson. Williamson shares her satisfaction comes more from helping others than herself. With a master’s degree in health administration education she knew she would end up in the health field helping others in some capacity. With massage therapy she is covering all bases.. “I’ve always been interested and I figured I could combine my master’s degree with massage (therapy),” she said. “It’s just the fact that I’m helping someone. A person can have a tension headache and I can help them release that tension. If they experience pain, stiffness or circulation issues or they have a bad day and just need relaxation, free time or to be energized. I feel like I provide that type of service. Massage is good for all of that.” Having fast tracked through the accelerated program at the Kneaded Energy School of Massage in Greensboro, North Carolina, Williamson is fully licensed and certified for massage and bodywork therapy. Her clients originate from every walk of life, from business professionals to athletes and even to expectant mothers. According to Williamson various massage techniques have also been used as calming methods for the mentally impaired, hyperactive or infants. She says the benefits of massage are much more wideranging than most people would ever consider. Furthermore, the knowledge base that a therapist is required to maintain is quite impressive and extensive.

ABC’s

To Health and Well-being By Terry L. Watson - Photos by Mykel Media Company Health and wellness are two commodities, that can be squandered in the same fashion that time is. The fortune thing is that we can redeem the time that remains and live our best life yet. Our health and wellness are two of the most important things that we have. The way that we treat it is reflected in our daily activities: tired at work, irritable around loved ones, lack of sleep, stress, gaining/ losing unhealthy weight, negativity and bad attitude. These are just a short list. Just imagine if you had a simple solution to better health. What if you changed one habit and it trickled down and changed everything? Is that even possible? We submit to you that it is possible. It can be as simple as “A-B-C”. A- Assess We have to know where we are. We have to be honest about it. Social media and reality television has clouded our judgement and has mentally forced us to create mental constructs that don’t actually exist, or do they? See, as a person thinks, so are they. Once we can come to an honest conclusion about what the issue is, then we can make honest strides to create a plan and then go to B. B- Believe “Whether you think you can, or you can’t…you’re right”. These are words to live by. Martin Luther King said to “take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step”. Have enough faith to believe that the goal that you have in mind is possible. Most of the battle with health and wellness starts in the mind. It has been said that people will revert to the person who they see in their minds. The strongest image that you have of yourself (subconsciously), will inevitably be the one that you will achieve. C- Commit Now that we’ve evaluated ourselves and have the belief that it’s possible, now it’s time to commit to a plan and execute. This is the portion that takes sweat equity and patience. It’s not going to always feel good but it’s going to be worth it. It’s not too late to start, but it’s impossible to finish without taking that first step!

She is a fighter, in every sense of the word. As long as she can remember, Kendra Macon has been very competitive, driven, fearless and open to new adventures. As a result of being such a young student-athlete, she has always been ahead of the game. Over the years, she has grown into a top performer, something that has afforded her the opportunity to compete in a variety of high-level arenas. These arenas have been in the classroom, on the field, on stage, on the big screen, and in the boxing ring. Kendra finds inspiration to achieve from her mother, sister, and grandmother. They are the three biggest inspirations in my life. I relentlessly pursue ALL my goals with them in mind,” she shares. She began her boxing career as a Light Heavyweight (178 lbs., 81 kg). in August of 2009. Her first competitive boxing match was the NC State Golden Gloves in March of 2010. Not being comfortable as a Light Heavyweight, she dropped down three weight classes to compete as a Light Welterweight (141 lbs., 64 kg.) and became the NC State and Regional Golden Glove Champion. In 2011, she competed at the USA Nationals in the Light Welterweight (141 lbs., 64 kg.) class). Despite the weight difference, she victoriously reigned as 5th in the nation. From that point forward, she maintain the Olympic weight class of a Lightweight (132 lbs., 60 kg.). Kendra says her career has come with its share of highs and lows. “Every time I stepped into the ring to compete, I considered that an accomplishment. I even consider my losses as accomplishments as they were symbolic of life lessons I needed to learn. The times I gave up and didn’t give 150%, or skipped training, cheated on my food regimen; those were my failures,” she says. She has experienced other difficulties in her life. “My battle with alcoholism, depression, and anxiety has impacted my life tremendously. However, the relationship with my mother has always kept me grounded, even during some of my darkest moments,” Kendra shares.

“With being such a high performing athlete, the expectation to always be great is a challenge. People tend to forget you are human and will not allow you to have an off day.”

By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company

At 54 years young, Donna Nealy (Coach D) isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. She is the owner of Esteem, A Total Transformation (Holistic Health and Wellness) non-profit organization with a 501(c)3 status. She defines herself as a woman who has learned through life experiences the worth in being loved, and loving herself. She is a motivational speaker that empowers people to be their best in all aspects of their life including health, mental, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and financial. A “born again believer” Donna genuinely loves people and shares she only wants the best for others. “I look at life with new lenses and perspectives. I realize that my health and wellness is a priority and without them, nothing else can truly progress or move forward,” she says. Donna decided to change her life at the age of 50 by hitting the competition stage. By doing so, she was able to receive healing for the rejection, pain, and hurt she had endured. Competing also empowered her to help others obtain the things they desired to accomplish. Donna started Esteem, A Total Transformation in 2006. It actually began as church ministry and has since evolved into a business. “As I worked on my undergraduate degree at High Point University, I gained a lot of weight and was absolutely miserable. That happened as a result of staying up late writing papers and doing homework, and eating to stay awake. Once obtaining my degree, I went straight into the Master’s Program, but with a different mind-set. I wanted to help other women who were facing similar challenges that I had. Even more, I realized there were other individuals just like me, who had gained weight and needed help to obtain a healthier lifestyle,” she shares. As Donna set out on her journey to help others, she realized many of her prospective clients were living in single parent households and in lower socio-economic status. She also understood they needed quality and affordable services. She then started her non-profit organization and began to offer scholarships to those that need her services. She now serves every socio-economic status and others. Continued on the next page JULY 2019

Donna has accomplished a great deal in life and with Esteem. Being in business for 13 years is a very important one for her. Some other bright moments happened when she placed between 1st and 3rd in her 5 Physique Body Building competitions, and received the 2018 ACHI Health and Fitness Award, and the 2018 Bridge Builders Award from The National Association of Negro Business And Professional Women’s Clubs Inc. She has served as one of the 2019 Coaches on Parade, a sponsored conference by Elevated Not Tolerated Coaching and Consulting. She has also received her ministerial license from Messiah Community Christian Church which is led by Pastor Frank Robinson. Esteem , A Total Transformation offers complete health and wellness services. These include Personal Training, Nutrition Consulting, Holistic Pharmacist, Reversal, Treatment, and preventive services for chronic illness. They also offer Life Coaching, Spiritual Guidance, Injury Training, Sports Training, Military Training, and consultations. There is also a component for competition prep for body builders. Additionally, Donna offers cooking classes, group exercise classes, and mental health workshops.

Donna says she loves assisting her clients finding love within themselves. “I love seeing people happy and realizing that they can lose the weight and maintain it with a lifestyle change. It is not just about weight physically, but often times the weights that are carried both physically and relational. I absolutely love what I do and it’s truly rewarding. This is my purpose for being here on earth,” she says. Donna is also inspired by the love she receives from her family and friends. “I am inspired by watching my grandchildren run around and know that I can run along with them. I am grateful for the awesome opportunity to assist others in turning their lives around, knowing that God has entrusted me with the responsibility to make sure we all are educated on how we can be in good health, naturally,” she says. Moving forward, Donna plans to expand her services into other states. There are plans to establish Health and Wellness workshops that will address various community concerns. She is also looking to add a Natural Doctor (N.D.) to her services which will collaborate with a Holistic pharmacist. She also plans to enlist more trainers and provide more classes, and go internationally. “We are already in Canada virtually,” she says.

More than anything, Donna hopes to share her message of health and wellness to anyone who is interested. “ Esteem, A Total Transformation is non-profit and fundraisers are a necessity. We are seeking the support from our community as we continue to offer workshops and classes. We need donors and sponsors for new larger equipment to accommodate the clients that are morbidly obese. As we grow, we need to bring on supporting staff to ensure we are able to meet the needs of our clients,” she says. S

Kendra journey as an athlete and boxer has helped her to grow in life. “I love the relationships and bonds created with other athletes and coaches. I equally love the grind and process of becoming a better athlete each day. It provides a certain satisfaction you cannot get anywhere else. With being such a high performing athlete, the expectation to always be great. People tend to forget you are human and will not allow you to have an off day,” she says. The future looks bright for Kendra. Since the 2016 Olympic Trials, she has developed a comprehensive program called NTG Fitness, Inc. It is designed to improve academic and athletic performance, develop character-building skills,

and strengthen social skills in youth between the ages of 7-18. She is also in the process of opening a boxing and fitness gym where youth and adults can get professional boxing and sports training. She also offers some advice to other females who are interested in taking up the sport of boxing. “Make sure your coach and your inner circle respect and support your dream of becoming a boxer, and don’t let anyone convince you that your dreams are unrealistic. You must follow your heart. Once you start, don’t stop until you are a champion, and when you do become champion, do it again,” she states. S

A good massage offers a feeling of deep relaxation and calmness. A massage prompts the release of endorphins – the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine, are also reduced. A massage can help to improve circulation, increased joint mobility and flexibility, reduced anxiety, and depression. It also helps to improve recovery of soft tissue injuries and reduced muscle tension.
