About the front cover: The front cover depicts the Terry Foundation’s Four Pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Community. The Foundation celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a year of SERVICE. This pillar is emphasized with gold as a tribute to Mr. Terry’s service to Texas over the past 30 years and a symbol of each Scholar’s pledge to give back.
About the back cover: Each new Terry Scholar adds to our growing family. The back cover depicts our family tree, grown from the Terrys’ desire for their scholarship to be more than just a check in the mail. The keyhole shape is a reminder that the Terry Scholarship has provided opportunity, but each Scholar holds the key to his or her own future success. The colors of our 13 Terry universities transition to Terry Blue as the tree branches outward – a reminder that we are all part of one large family, regardless of school.

It has been a great year to look back and celebrate what has been accomplished, and to remember that it all started with the vision of Howard and Nancy Terry.
This year we celebrated a wonderful milestone, reaching our 30th anniversary of providing scholarships to many bright, hardworking and deserving college students in Texas. It has been a great year to look back and celebrate what has been accomplished and to remember that it all started with the vision of Howard and Nancy Terry. They truly believed that if they could help young people to help themselves by achieving a college education with little to no debt, then good things would follow.
As we approached this year of celebration, we contemplated the best way to honor the Terrys and to celebrate their legacy. We knew that Mr. Terry would not want any fuss, but we also realized that every current student, and those yet to come, will never have the opportunity to meet our founders. With that in mind, we embarked on a six-month journey to create a film which would capture their vision.
“Mr. Terry knew every Scholar by name. He would remember things from our interviews. And he took a real interest in what we were doing at school... how things were going. So, here’s Mr. and Mrs. Terry, who founded the Foundation... and they truly had this interest in what was going on in our lives. It was almost as if we were their own children.” -Bob Gabriel, UT 1993
The documentary film Giving provides a glimpse into the motivation that compelled Howard Terry to create an educational foundation and sheds light on what he hoped to accomplish. The result is a story that all Terry Scholars share… that through education, individuals can improve their own lives and therefore be able to impact the lives of others.
We were thrilled to share Giving as the highlight of each of the 13 fall banquets. We joined together as a family on each campus, including our current Scholars and many alumni, members of the Board of Directors and our friends and university partners. The reaction was more than we could have hoped for! Many students said that seeing the film helped them to feel more connected to Mr. Terry and reminded them of their extended family and sense of community.
We hope that our current Scholars were inspired by the stories of some of our featured alumni, who are now out working and serving in their own communities. We were all challenged to carry forward the Terry legacy by honoring the gift we were given and working hard to impact the world around us. Perhaps most importantly, we were reminded that we each have a responsibility to ensure that this same opportunity exists for those who come along behind us.
To honor the amazing generosity of Howard and Nancy Terry, Terry Scholars and alumni around the world dedicated this past year as a “Year of Service.” We asked everyone to remember the Terrys as they performed acts of service throughout the year, and we have enjoyed seeing and hearing your stories. The cumulative results of your efforts were 325 projects and more than 54,000 hours of service. We can only imagine that this is just a fraction of the impact that Terry Scholars have on the world every day as they work, study and serve those around them.
Thank you, Terry Family, for sharing this milestone year with us. Thank you to those who contributed to the making of the film, Giving, and to all those who performed acts of service throughout the year. We look forward to many more years of giving, and to the impact that is yet to be seen. Most of all, thank you Howard and Nancy Terry, for your tremendous generosity and vision, which makes us all want to be worthy to bear your name as Terry Scholars.

Happy Anniversary, Terry Scholars!
The Terry Foundation’s goal is to improve and develop the state of Texas by assisting Texas students to attend the state’s finest public universities.
The Foundation hopes that these students will have a significant impact on the future leadership of the state and nation. To achieve this goal, the Foundation awards scholarships to students who meet the high standards set by the Founders.
What began in 1986 as a small scholarship program at the University of Texas and Texas A&M University is now the largest private source of scholarships for 13 universities across Texas.
The Foundation Program
Our Four Pillars
SCHOLARSHIP. Terry Scholars are chosen based, in part, on their academic achievements, and they are challenged to develop and use their knowledge to their highest potential.
LEADERSHIP. Terry Scholars are also challenged to be leaders and role models on their campuses, in their families, and anywhere else they can make an impact.
SERVICE. Terry Scholars are expected to give back to the Foundation through service – within the Terry network and in the world at large.
COMMUNITY. The Foundation strives to be more than just a “check in the mail” for our Scholars. Activities throughout the year provide an opportunity for Scholars to network with each other, with the Board of Directors and Foundation staff, and the expanding Terry Scholar Alumni Association.
The Selection Process
Formal interviews are conducted by the Foundation, concurrently in several cities around the state, each year in April for the Traditional Scholarship program and in June for the Transfer Scholarship program. Finalists meet with a six-member panel consisting of members of the Foundation Board of Directors, Scholar Alumni, and current Terry Scholars. The interview panels make the final selections, and new Scholars are notified prior to the start of the following academic year.
“Mr. Terry set the criteria early on... academics, financial need, and demonstrated leadership. You’re always going to have people with high academic scores, with some degree of financial need... but you want to focus on those people that have that intangible ability to lead others, to contribute, to give back to society and make us, make the whole economy and the society, better. That’s what we want.”
-Rhett
Campbell, Chief Executive Officer and Board Chairman*

Nancy M. Terry 1927-2012
1927 Born in Ogdensburg, New York
Mrs. Nancy (Myers) Terry, who would later play a primary role in supporting and encouraging the Terry Scholars, was an active student herself, participating in cheerleading, tennis, skiing, and athletics during her school years. Later, she graduated at the top of her class from the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester, completing her training at the Highland Hospital in Rochester.
After relocating to Texas and marrying Howard Terry in 1966, she continued her active lifestyle, but her newer interests skewed toward a more creative angle. She cultivated skills such as gardening, painting, and photography, with which she stayed busy for most of her long life.
“Mrs. Terry took an active interest in the lives of the Scholars and treasured the early gifts given by the graduating seniors. With her love of art, she particularly treasured anything that was made by the Scholars themselves, including drawings, paintings and picture collages.“
-Yvonne Moody (TAMU 1987), Foundation President and Executive Director*
“I learned from Mrs. Terry the importance of voting and civic engagement. I’m proud to say that I’m also involved with this in my own community.”
-Casey Wenmohes (UT 1989)*
Howard L. Terry 1916-2012
“A
30-minute interview that would change Mr. Terry’s life...
Mr. Terry had a science teacher who really thought a lot of him and wanted to see him succeed. This teacher knew a man in Austin with connections to the brand new coach at The University of Texas. One thing led to another, and the man in Austin said he could get Mr. Terry an interview with the new coach if he could get to Austin. Sure enough, the science teacher decided that he would personally drive Mr. Terry, because it was the only way he could get to this interview.
Mr. Terry always thought about that in later times and that’s one of the reasons that we use a 30-minute interview in our selection process – because he knew the impact that it could have on somebody’s life.”
-Ed Cotham, Chief Investment Officer*
1916 Howard Terry was born in Cameron, TX. His family owned a filling station, where young Howard worked during high school. Later, he would work for the county, shoveling gravel.
1938 Graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, which he attended on an athletic scholarship. He then took a position with Procter & Gamble.
1942 Voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a P.T. Boat Commander in the Pacific during World War II.
“Mr. Terry knew that he had survived in the war while other people with whom he was close had not. I think that had an impact on his life. He felt a responsibility to do something important with his life because he had managed to survive. This was a motivating factor in his commitment to those around him.”
-Ed Cotham, Chief Investment Officer*
1951 Started first business at age 35
After his military service, Mr. Terry returned to Procter & Gamble, serving as General Manager and setting up several chain stores. He then went to work for the Chambers Range Company.
He eventually went into business for himself, constructing residential subdivisions. He had a natural gift for finance, and over the following years, he gradually built an empire of businesses in the fields of construction, banking, real estate and oil & gas.
1981 Founded the Terry Companies, a multi-state corporation involved in oil & gas exploration and development.
“Mr. Terry basically had to invent his own opportunities... and I think that’s one of the reasons that he always had a regard for people who were trying to improve their situation. He’d been in that position, and he knew how difficult it was. Sometimes it just took a little bit of assistance to help somebody make that leap into the success that they wanted to be.”
-Ed Cotham, Chief Investment Officer*
1986 Howard and Nancy Terry co-founded the Terry Foundation
With profound business success over the decades and their family’s needs met, the Terrys developed a growing desire to give back to the community and, specifically, to help young people to reach their goals in higher education. After evaluating ideas as varied as university campus construction projects and endowed-chair faculty positions, the Terrys were still not satisfied.
Ultimately, the Terrys arrived at a plan to invest in the students of Texas themselves through the Terry Foundation, a scholarship program designed to exist into perpetuity. This plan has not only fulfilled the Terrys’ original dream of improving the state of Texas through its citizens, but also provided a path enabling like-minded individuals, Scholars and others, to continue the mission far into the foreseeable future.
The endowment was established in December 1986, and the first class of Terry Scholars was chosen in the summer of 1987. These 17 Scholars, along with the Terrys and those who had supported the Terrys’ endeavor, would form the base for the close-knit community soon to be known as the Terry Family.
“I remember one particularly funny experience that I had with Mr. Terry late in his life. We were talking about a function we’d been to that involved a whole lot of Terry Scholars, and he said, ‘You know, Ed, something funny happened. I was talking to some of them, and I noticed they were all referring to themselves as ‘Terrys’... Just like they were a member of my family.’
“I said, ‘That’s exactly the way they feel.’
“He thought about it for a minute and said, ‘You know, that’s exactly the way we wanted it.’”
-Ed Cotham, Chief Investment Officer*
FOUNDATION HISTORY
Investing in Students
Howard and Nancy Terry created the Terry Scholarship Program in 1986 to help young people help themselves through education. Knowing that universities are more than buildings and classrooms, Howard Terry had repeatedly declined to allow the universities to honor his previous contributions by placing his name on campus structures:
“Mortar and bricks will eventually be torn down,” he reasoned. The Terrys believed, in the long term, that a state is only as good as the educated citizens it produces. Thus was born a desire to invest in the students who would attend the public colleges and universities in Texas.
The Terry Foundation program was influenced greatly by Howard Terry’s own college experience. His family origins in Cameron, Texas were modest and it was only through the generosity of others that his college education had been made possible. Mr. Terry never forgot the helping hand that he received to attend college and was determined to extend that same help to a new generation of students.
After seeking counsel from sources including UT-Austin coach Darrell K. Royal and Houston attorney Rhett G. Campbell, the Terrys determined their most lasting contribution. They decided on a perpetual endowment that would provide scholarships for college students who demonstrated a capacity for outstanding leadership, and who needed financial assistance to achieve their goals in higher education.
From this simple concept, the Terry Foundation was created in 1986 to be the source of a perpetual scholarship program. The first scholarship recipients, known since then as “Terry Scholars,” were selected at interviews held in the summer of 1987.
Mr. Terry’s appreciation for the actions of those who helped launch his success is evident in his primary request of the Terry Scholars.
“We ask them to give back to the Foundation... through their own time and effort, so that they help other people who come behind them.” -Howard Terry
Growth and Expansion
During the first seventeen years of the Foundation’s history, Scholars attended only the University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University. In the fall of 2004, the Foundation Scholarship Program expanded for the first time, when Terry Scholars were named at the University of Houston and at Texas State University. Continued growth provided scholarships over subsequent years to the current total of thirteen universities.
2 Universities
Growth in the Foundation endowment eventually made possible an additional program expansion, when the Board approved a new component to the program: scholarships for students transferring completed college hours to any of the participating Terry universities. Commencing with the selection of 158 Terry Transfer Scholars in 2013, the Terry Transfer Scholarship program is now the largest of its kind in the state.
The Impact
Since its inception, the Terry Scholarship Program has helped over 5,000 college students achieve their goals in higher education. The Foundation Board oversees a large endowment and now includes six members who are Terry Scholar Alumni.
Along the way, Mr. and Mrs. Terry, and the Program itself, have been honored with a number of awards and recognitions, but the true measure of the Program’s worth can be viewed in the success story of every Terry Scholar.
A Growing Legacy
Howard Terry was active in the management of the Foundation up until the very end of his long life. He died in 2012 at age 95. The Foundation lost its second Founder later that same year, when Nancy Terry passed away at the age of 85. The Terry Foundation has become larger than the Terrys ever imagined, fulfilling their dreams of making a difference in the lives of students across the state.
“I’m the oldest of five, and my parents are Mexican immigrants. They wanted all of us to go to college. The Terry Foundation opened the doors that my parents wanted opened for us. This process that once seemed very daunting was actually a wonderful experience for our entire family. It’s motivated my siblings so that one day all of us can say, ‘This is our college degree, Mom and Dad. We did it.’”
-Melissa
Hernandez (UH 2008)
Today, the Terrys’ legacy is carried forward by the thousands of Terry Scholars who bear their name and embody the Foundation’s Four Pillars – Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Community.
All Terry Scholars pledge to give back to the Foundation and to the world with their time, talent, and resources. Terry Scholar Alumni ensure that the Terry Family continues to thrive through their mentorship and service on the Board of Directors, Alumni Advisory Board and through participation in the Terry Scholar Alumni Association.
“The key thing they’ve done is give me a sense of obligation to be the best I can be for the rest of my life; to ask, ‘How can I personally invest in people who need something that I can offer?” -Patrick Frasier (UT 2004)
“I would say, the life I live gives back to the Terry Foundation. Every time I volunteer, every time I take care of a patient, I think of the Terrys. I think of them all the time, because they made my life what it is today.”
-Amanda Donohoe (UT 1987)
2017-18
A year of celebration through Service
One of the Terrys’ greatest hopes for the Program lives in the idea that the Scholars would help others as they themselves had been helped. In so doing, the Scholars would continue to extend the helping hand that had originally enabled Mr. Terry’s academic career and subsequent success.
In honor of that original hope, and of the Foundation’s thirtieth anniversary, the SERVICE pillar of the Program was emphasized during the 2017-2018 school year.
Giving back through service to others has been a hallmark of the Terry Foundation Program since its inception three decades ago.
2017 Orientations
In August 2017, we welcomed 364 new Terry Scholars across our 13 universities.
An event was held on each campus just prior to the start of the fall semester. For new Scholars, the orientation is designed to focus special emphasis on the transition faced by faced by first-year and transferring college students.
Each day’s events included presentations on the Foundation Scholarship Program by Foundation executive management and staff. At the conclusion of the orientation programs, the new Scholars enjoyed networking with each other and with Scholars from the other cohorts.

Terry Student Organization Officers from all 13 universities met in Houston on January 4-6, 2018 to develop their leadership skills and learn best practices from Foundation staff and Terry Alumni. The officers also participated in a service project that made 96 care packages and 35 posters for the Houston Area Women’s Center.
Fredericksburg Day at the Museum
On January 20, 2018, over 50 Terry Alumni brought their families to enjoy a day at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, TX.
Guests visited over lunch before watching a presentation about Mr. Terry’s service as a Patrol Torpedo (PT) Boat Captain in the Philippines during WWII. Ed Cotham, Jr., the Foundation’s Chief Investment Officer, shared Mr. Terry’s harrowing experiences during the battle of Leyte Gulf. After the presentation, Terry Alumni and their families set out to explore the museum and downtown Fredericksburg.
We enjoyed spending the day with Terry Scholars ranging from the class of 1987 to the class of 2016. Thank you for coming together to honor and celebrate Mr. Terry’s military service, which influenced the ideals of leadership and service, on which he built his scholarship foundation.

Austin Alumni Luncheon
The 2018 Austin Alumni Luncheon and Advisory Board Meeting took place on February 13th at the Westwood Country Club in Austin, TX. Alumni joined Foundation staff and Advisory Board Members for lunch and an update on the state of the Foundation.
Howard and Nancy Terry Day
In 2011, Mayor Annise Parker and the city of Houston honored Mr. and Mrs. Terry by declaring March 22nd “Howard and Nancy Terry Day” in honor of their philanthropic efforts and impact on the city.
Terry Day 2018 was celebrated by the Houston Chapter of the Terry Scholar Alumni Association by hosting a volunteer event at Brookdale Senior Living Center. Houston area alumni, local current scholars, and guests interacted with the residents through decorating cookies, playing bingo, and sharing stories over lunch. The Terrys’ presence and interaction brightened the day of all of the seniors in the living community, who enjoyed the opportunity to share stories about their lives.
This event contributed about 100 hours to the Year of Service total.
2018 Traditional Interviews
The Terry Interview process has remained unchanged – every candidate receives an in-person interview with six panelists.
Interviews for the Terry Traditional Scholarship took place March 26th–April 9th in El Paso, Austin, Dallas, and Houston. 100 volunteers sat on 17 interview panels to interview a total of 510 candidates. The Foundation extended 238 scholarship offers across our 13 universities.
Thank you, 2018 Traditional Scholar interview panelists!
We want to thank the Terry Scholars who gave their time to select the Terry Class of 2018. This year, Terry interview panelists put in about 4,000 cumulative hours to review applications and give every candidate a 30-minute in-person interview.

Statewide Service Projects
The first statewide service project was organized in 2006. Since then, the Foundation has experienced tremendous growth, and Scholars from across the state have joined together to contribute thousands of hours of service to the State of Texas.
A common service project or theme is traditionally selected at the Statewide Officer Retreat in January, and the chosen activity is completed later in the spring. Since the Foundation hosted the retreat in a different format this year, no single initiative was chosen. Instead, a number of Terry Schools shared their spring projects – carrying forward the Terry tradition of service while helping those still recovering months after Hurricane Harvey.
UTD • Hurricane Harvey Relief–Houston/Galveston • March 11-16
Scholars from UT Dallas traveled to Houston and Galveston to assist with the continuing clean up efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. They painted, cleared damaged cabinets and flooring from flooded homes, helped with yardwork, and hung drywall. They also helped in the community garden of a church that assisted many area residents during the hurricane.

TTU, UNT, SHSU • YMCA Day Camp–Katy • April 20th–21st
The Tech Terry Scholars partnered with the United way of Houston and YMCA Cinco Ranch and organized a day of service at the YMCA Cinco Ranch Day Camp in Katy, Texas. They were joined by Scholars from the University of North Texas and Sam Houston State University. Students joined committees for the various projects and drew up plans and supply lists. Projects included leading team building activities with local kids, painting various structures around the camp; moving benches, trash can holders and picnic tables; building some camp games, and constructing a “Ninja Warrior Course.”
UH • The Bread of Life–Houston • April 21
The University of Houston Terry Scholars served a hot meal and provided toiletries to the homeless at The Bread of Life, Inc. in downtown Houston.
The
Picnics El Paso • March 25, 2018
The Foundation hosted five picnics in Spring 2018. Scholars at each location were joined by Foundation Directors and staff, Alumni Scholars and their families, and special guests from the universities. Updates from the student organizations were followed by the presentation of the traditional gold pen gift to the graduating senior Scholars. Following tradition, each senior took the microphone to speak briefly of their future plans.

The Story Behind the Terry Scholar Pen
A message from Mr. Terry to graduating seniors in his words…
When students graduate from our Terry Scholar Program, we give each of them an engraved gold pen. This pen is not only a symbol of their achievement in graduating from our program, but also reflects our hope that they will keep in touch with us after graduation and let us know how they are doing.
Early in our program, we were looking around for a special gift to give to our graduating seniors. We eventually settled on a gold pen because that had a special meaning to me. On one occasion many years ago, I was involved in a very important business deal. As it turned out, it was one of the biggest deals I ever made and was key to putting together the assets that eventually became the endowment of the Terry Foundation. At the conclusion of that deal, each of the parties received a gold pen to celebrate the closing of that transaction. I have that pen to this day.
Every time I look at that pen I remember the excitement and satisfaction I felt in closing that deal. So, when we decided to give each of our graduating seniors a gift, I suggested a gold pen, hoping that our graduates would look at that pen (as I still do) and remember their achievements as a Terry Scholar. We always say that the Terry Scholar Program is intended to operate like a family and it is our hope that this gold pen will remind our graduates of the Terry Foundation Program and the people here who care about them and will always wish them the best.
Good luck and keep in touch.

SERVICE
The 2017-2018 school year marked the 30th Anniversary of the Terry Scholarship. Terry Scholars across the globe honored the Terry Legacy and celebrated the growth of our Terry Family by giving back to their communities.
We encouraged everyone to share their stories of service and to add their service hours to our cumulative total.
At the end of June 2018, the Foundation totaled the number of reported service hours for the year. The results were remarkable: 54,561 hours across 325 projects. At least 500 hours were reported for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
We know this is a fraction of the impact that Terry Scholars make on the world, and we are so proud of everyone in this community.
These are some of the stories and photos shared this year.

Camp Kesem at UTD
Camp Kesem is a nonprofit organization that hosts a week-long summer camp for children with a parent experiencing cancer. Last year, I founded the chapter with Ryan Townsend (2015)
It has been a full time job for us, with many UTD Terry Scholars participating as well. From 27 kids last summer, enrollment has increased to 50 this summer. Over $100,000 in support has been raised in two years through individual fundraising, galas, 5k’s and grant writing. We lead a team of UTD students who fundraise, plan camp, recruit campers, recruit counselors and more. A number of fellow Terry Scholars also serve in leadership positions.

KSLA News 12 - MLK Health Center and Food Bank of North Louisiana
I organized several volunteer activities with my coworkers to give the KSLA News 12 staff an opportunity to give back to the Shreveport community. One of our activities included volunteering at the MLK Health Center, a no-cost comprehensive primary health care facility and pharmacy. Our volunteers helped staff in the clinic and pharmacy, as well as in their community garden.

Global Dental Brigades Nicaragua
I was able to provide smaller villages with proper dental care and educate them and their children on the importance of dental hygiene. I shadowed/assisted dentists for dental procedures, maintained charting in an online database, prepared and passed out medication to patients, performed fluoride treatments, and taught children about oral hygiene. During our water day, I was able to lend a hand in digging trenches for a future water system to be laid down in a village.

I volunteered to provide free face painting at the San Marcos Mermaid Parade to raise awareness and recruit skaters for San Marcos River Rollers, an all-women run non-profit roller derby organization built to promote women’s empowerment and fitness in the San Marcos community. Other skaters and I also volunteered in Port Aransas, clearing debris, helping a family rebuild part of their house, and cooking and delivering spaghetti and salads to local victims of Harvey.
I helped pass out candy to the kids in our community and cleaned up the school after the event.

Todd Christian (TAMU 2014) Boy Scouts of America
Throughout the year, I volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America and the World Organization of the Scout Movement in a variety of activities. This year included several out-of-state trips and two trips to Ecuador. I worked with the youngest of Cub Scouts to the Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, and many things in between. My trips to Ecuador were to lead the fifth course of the Interamerican Leadership Training, which trains young adults with leadership skills for their country, of which every country in the Interamerican Region (from Canada to Chile) were included, as well as several in the Asia-Pacific Region. Perhaps the most exciting opportunity was speaking to 50,000 Scouts and Scouters at the National Scout Jamboree about the World Scout Jamboree coming in 2019!

Mission UpReach in Honduras
I interned with the group Mission UpReach for 10 weeks. This group is based in Honduras and does medical brigades, has a school for the deaf, and has an early education program in the local elementary schools. I volunteered as an intern and helped guide volunteer groups during their time in Honduras and accompanied the medical brigades and worked with the school group during weeks that medical brigades were not occurring. Overall, we served approximately 500 Hondurans a week, giving them free medical care from professional doctors, dentists, and pharmacists. On the weeks when I helped the educational programs, we would visit 10-13 schools during the week, educating them on everything from grammar to hygiene. This gave me appreciation for the opportunities I have been given.

Volunteer in Methodist Hospital
I volunteer every week in the emergency room at Methodist Hospital, helping patients in many different ways, offering them support and comfort. Mr. Terry was an awesome example, guiding us to help each other without any reward. I feel really happy when I see patients feel better or smile because I did a simple thing to assist them. My volunteer shift at Methodist Hospital has become an important part of my weekly schedule. Nurses know me and appreciate my effort to help them, so they can focus on more important tasks.
Every Wednesday we pack food for students who are a part of the free and reduced meal program. They do not have access to these free meals during the summer or the weekends. During the school year we meet in the evenings to pack the bags for weekend meals. During the summer we meet twice a day. In the morning, we unpack all of the food from boxes and stage it for the evening. In the evening, we pack the bags for Monday-Friday meals and snacks.
The summer program provides over 120,000 meals to over 1000 students on the free and reduced lunch program.

Court Appointed Special Advocate
Over the last year I have volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for CASA of Denton County, Inc. As an Advocate, a Denton County Judge appoints me to serve on a case involving a child, or group of siblings, who have been placed in foster care. My job is to advocate for the children in my case, and make sure that all of their needs are met by their caregivers, as well as the court.
Since July of 2017, I have put over 80 hours into speaking with the parents of my kids, speaking with their foster placements, observing parent-child visits, visiting my kids in their foster placements, researching case issues on my own, writing court reports and attending court hearings.

Houston Food Bank
My family (Nicolas, Chloe, and Max plus our neighbor Ethan) and I helped set up cereal to be packed for the Backpack Buddies program at the Houston Food Bank. On Fridays, participating schools give identified children a food sack to take home containing child-friendly, nonperishable, and easily consumed food to last through the weekend. My children, Chloe and Max, and I then joined many of my Bridgeway colleagues to pack food for Backpack Buddies. We were part of 200 people that packed 40,500 meals! We contributed to the Houston Food Bank’s distributing over 350,000 backpacks to children in over 600 schools through the Backpack Buddies program.

UT Student Food Bank
Start-Up, Food Collection
I raised money and collected food to help establish a food bank for students at UT Austin. A large percentage of college students have food and financial insecurities, and don’t have the means to eat well and remain healthy for their studies. After our efforts to raise money and canned goods, a permanent food bank was established on campus to give free food to students in need.

Global Business Brigades
Five other UT business students and I traveled to the rural province of Hato Mayor in the Dominican Republic for a week to provide nonprofit business consulting for a women-run cooperative. In between meetings with the co-op’s leaders, we helped them to build a garden in front of their store, which mostly involved mixing concrete and laying cinderblocks. On the last day, we visited a local high school to give a presentation on innovation and entrepreneurship, and on the differences between businesses in the US and DR. In the end, we made valuable business recommendations to the local women and helped them to understand more about how to stimulate long-term growth for their community’s cooperative.

DeLaney is a refugee-training farm that seeks to provide the space, support, resources, and expertise for refugees to grow healthy, organically-produced food for themselves and their broader community. We helped maintain the farm’s fields, which yield fresh crops that feed the local refugee community and provide training and jobs for local refugees who work on the farm. We interacted with refugees from Somalia, Burma, Afghanistan and Nepal.

Out of the Darkness Walk (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)
The Out of the Darkness Walk was hosted by the Washington Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I started out the morning at the Honor Beads table, interacting with the over 1,500 participants in the walk as they shared stories of those who they were walking for. I later was stationed along the route, cheering on walkers and directing traffic around participants. The impact was immediately recognizable as I built connections with people who were experiencing a wide variety of emotions. The event is, in its very nature, equal parts celebratory and somber. That I could bring a smile to people’s faces was incredibly important. On the macro-scale, the event had approximately 1,500 participants and raised over $160,000.

Migrant Learning Center/BEAM Education Foundation
For the fall semester of 2017, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Chiang Mai, Thailand and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In Chiang Mai, my service placement was teaching English at the Migrant Learning Center and teaching math and science at BEAM Education Foundation, which is an organization that helps students obtain their GED. Both organizations targeted Burmese refugees specifically. These students are very dedicated to their studies and hard working, attending an additional two hour class every night in order to improve their English skills on top of going to school or work all day. The students at BEAM Education Foundation showed a deeper understanding, specifically in the topics of chemistry and in their foundation of math concepts.
These students all have very rough pasts regarding the history of their country, and many are separated from their family. I was so encouraged by my time with them and the strength that they possessed and the work that they put in every day. Overall, I feel as if they impacted me more than I impacted them.

I had 11 inches of hair cut off to donate to Wigs for Kids. My mother had cancer as a child and lost her hair due to the chemotherapy, so ever since I was young, I have cut my hair every 5+ years and donated it to a similar organization that provides wigs for people suffering from an illness that causes hair loss.
Houston Pets Alive
I volunteered with Houston Pets Alive to clean crates, feed animals and walk about 200 dogs at the temporary shelter after Harvey. I was able to volunteer with the vet techs and even assisted with splinting a puppy’s broken leg. A friend also volunteered with me, and we were able to help bottle-feed a litter of puppies.

My sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, was able to raise over $150,000 for Scotty’s House and CASA of the Brazos Valley to help kids in foster care and their families get the advocacy and care they need. I painted banners, educated myself and others about Scotty’s House and CASA of the Brazos Valley, worked the events, held banners, created decorations, painted name tags, and painted the train in front of Scotty’s House.

Hurricane Harvey Recovery
We held a food distribution for the community in the immediate days following Harvey. We had over 200 volunteers from the Caney Creek feeder zone (teachers, students, parents) show up, sort and box over 40 pallets of food from eight box trucks and two goose-neck trailers. We distributed food to over 900 families!

It’s My Park Day
We went to Mount Bonnell to clean up the surrounding areas. We weeded and planted new flowers and picked up litter. It was humbling to take part in this activity, but it was also disappointing to see how little people care about keeping their parks clean, as illustrated by the amount of trash we collected.

Therapy Dog Hospital Visits
Mesa, a therapy dog, and I regularly visit patients at the Acute Rehab Unit (ARU). Patients typically stay for 10-21 days, keeping them away from home, loved ones, and pets when they are sick and in pain. We bring them comfort when they need it most.
UNT Terry Scholars created hand-made cards and delivered them to children suffering from illnesses in the hospital, with the hope of brightening their day.
Adopt a Block
We helped clean up around Sage Hall, picking up trash and beautifying the area.
Operation Christmas Child
We helped sort shoe box presents to send out from Samaritan’s Purse Foundation for children in third world countries.

Houston Pets Alive set up a temporary shelter to intake animals at risk of euthanasia. The housing serves as a safe place for them to stay until transferred to other no-kill rescue groups. UH Scholars collaborated with Houston Terry Alumni to help take care of the dogs and cats by feeding, watering, walking and cleaning kennels. The Terrys were able to walk almost all of the dogs and ensure that the shelter animals received some personal attention.

Books Between Kids
Books Between Kids is an organization in Houston that provides Houston’s at-risk children books to start their own home libraries. Throughout the past year, my wife and I have volunteered at the BBK warehouse organizing and packing books to give to elementary school-aged kids in our area. We were also invited to join the Book Brigade and become volunteer leaders assisting other volunteers during their tasks in the warehouse.
This past year BBK gave out more than 300,000 books to children in over 69 schools throughout the Houston area, helping foster a love of reading in children who might not have had that opportunity. This year, after Harvey, we also had extra volunteering shifts to send extra books to elementary schools affected by the flooding.

I am participating in a small group of church members to find and select a new minister for our church. Neighborhood Senior Grocery Shopping
I volunteered with a local community outreach to buy groceries for seniors and take those unable to drive to the grocery store, ensuring that seniors in my community have access to fresh and healthy food.
My family started a mission church with a friend and his family in Third Ward in Houston five years ago. One of the first things we did was open a food pantry and clothing closet for the community. Each week, we open up and provide a bag of perishable items, including a piece of meat and fruits and vegetables, and a bag of nonperishable items, including canned fruits and vegetables and ramen noodles. This is especially useful for the outdoor people who come to our pantry. At the same time, they come in and are able to select clothes for themselves and family members.

Terry Campus Partners
To our Campus Partners:
Over the past 30 years, the Terry Foundation has supported thousands of young Texans in achieving their dreams, enabling them to graduate debt-free and to begin independent lives free of financial burden. But the pictures here represent and remind us of an even more important aspect of the Foundation’s support for our Scholars: YOU.
While the faces have changed over time, the tremendous support for the Scholars at our university campuses has never wavered. Because you genuinely care for and about students, the Terry Foundation Scholarship is “more than a check in the mail.”
We at the Foundation express our heartfelt gratitude to you, our campus partners. No job description or career ladder or pay grade recognizes or acknowledges the priceless work you do every single day. But we hope that the smiles on these pages communicate the inestimable value you bring to the Terry Scholars, and to the Foundation.
Thank you.
