About Our Cover According to Mr. Terry, “success is the accomplishment of goals you set for yourself in life.” Each Terry Scholar defines and re-defines what success looks like as they pursue their education, work toward their goals, build their strengths, and develop as leaders.

This year’s cover theme honors the diverse range of fields and industries represented by the Terry Community while unifying them in a common art style. After all, we may have different goals and different methods of designing success for ourselves, but we are all Terry Scholars.

Each Scholar is the designer of their own success. Sometimes, designs need to be re-drafted or modified based on a variety of factors and challenges. Terry Scholars are resilient, and they work to be the best versions of themselves. This may be a result of or in spite of a plan several drafts away from its original design.

Thirty five years ago, Mr. Terry intentionally designed this scholarship program to help outstanding students realize their potential through access to education. Our common dedication to the Terry Pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Community ensures that the Terry Legacy will continue to provide more opportunities for Texas students to design success for themselves.

Achieving our goals and designing our success requires creativity, reflection, analysis, critical thinking, grit, perseverance, and so much more than the lessons we learn in the classroom in pursuit of our academic majors.

The hand-drawn elements on our cover and on the interior pages of this book remind us that we both define and design what our own personal success can be. Our hard work makes achievement of that success possible.

This Year in Review was created by Ciara Designs in collaboration with Amber Masso, Christen Barron (UH 2007), and Riya Salphy (UH 2022). Ciara Shay (TXST 2012) is the owner of Ciara Designs.

President’s Letter The end of each academic year brings the opportunity to look back and reflect on a year of accomplishments. This 2022-2023 Year in Review is a collection of pictures and stories which provide a glimpse of the collective impact that Terry Scholars have had on their communities. A quick glance through the pages will reveal the wonderful diversity that is represented within our Terry Community. Terry Scholars come from different places and backgrounds, and each Scholar pursues their own version of success. What makes them so successful? One observation might be that they are “planners” and “doers.” In fact, many Terry Scholars are examples of what author Stephen R. Covey describes as “highly effective people,” who “Begin with the End in Mind.®” And for most Terry Scholars, their primary stated goal is to graduate from college. In 1986, Howard Terry had a long term vision of helping young people to help themselves, by providing access to higher education through generous financial support. The initial intent of the Terry Foundation was simply to pick bright, hardworking students and give them a financial boost to enable them to graduate debt free. However, after 36 years of growth and experience, the Terry Scholarship program has evolved into a highly structured support system which allows every student the opportunity to thrive independent of their life circumstances or their intended degree plan. Mr. Terry did not envision one prescriptive plan for each student to follow. He wanted students to establish their own goals and then work hard to achieve them. Throughout the history of the Terry Scholarship Program, many Scholars have taken seriously the annual charge of goal setting, assessment, and measurement of achievement. A few have been successful at charting a direct line from their chosen degree plan through graduation and the accomplishment of a clearly stated goal to reach graduate or professional school or career employment. More often, the path is neither direct nor easy to navigate. Frequently Terry Scholars face obstacles, unanticipated challenges, and even wildly varied educational and career paths that they could have never imagined. And so, the question surfaces again: “What makes them so successful?” From my viewpoint, the secret to success is the underlying reason that most Terry Scholars were selected. The characteristics of determination and perseverance have helped many Scholars overcome the hardships that might have held them back. Their willingness to plan, adapt, problem solve, work hard and change course when needed all contribute to a successful outcome. Along the way, the gift of education and community spurs them on to expand their creativity, innovation, gratitude, and service to others. Mr. Terry once stated, “Success is the accomplishment of goals you set for yourself.” In his lifetime, he was immensely proud of the Terry Scholars he enabled to reach their goals, and his legacy lives on in those who continue to bear his name. They are all planners and doers, building a better tomorrow!

Thank You, Mr. and Mrs. Terry In 1987, Howard and Nancy Terry founded what is now the largest private source for scholarships in Texas. The Terrys believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand would, in turn, give back – to the Foundation, to their college campuses, to their communities and beyond. Today, the success and impact of thousands of Terry Scholars stand as testimonies to the wisdom of that belief. Mr. and Mrs. Terry passed away in 2012, but their legacy lives on in each Terry Scholar who acts as a shining example of their vision and leaves a mark on the world around them.

A Year in Review (2022-2023) Fall Orientations In August 2022, The Terry Foundation hosted in-person Scholar Orientations on its partner campuses for the first time since fall 2019. We welcomed 224 new Freshmen Terry Scholars across 11 universities. The Terry Freshmen on each campus joined their Scholar Relations Manager for a presentation about the scholarship program and the Terry Community. Additionally, over 500 returning Scholars at all 13 Terry universities reunited with their fellow Terrys and enjoyed activities hosted by the Scholar student organizations.

A Year in Review (2022-2023) Fall Banquets During our 2022 Fall Banquet season in September and October, we returned to the familiar format of on-campus events, bringing currently-funded students together with Terry Scholar Alumni and university partners for a night of networking. Table seating was arranged to align the students’ majors and desired career paths with the education and/or work experience of the Alumni Table Hosts, when possible. Additionally, the keynote speaker at every Terry Banquet was one of our Terry Scholar Alumni. During their time on scholarship, students can see multiple examples of what it means to “give back” at these events before it is their opportunity to return as an Alumni Table Host and maybe even a featured speaker!

A Year in Review (2022-2023) Statewide Officer Retreat The 2023 Terry Statewide Officer Retreat was hosted at UT-Dallas in January 2023. Terry student leaders from across the state gathered to build community, grow their leadership skills, share best practices, and prepare to launch a successful spring semester for their organizations. The officers also selected the International Rescue Committee as the beneficiary of this year’s Terry Statewide Service Project. Scholars raised enough money to help fully equip 5 mobile medical clinics!

The Terry Foundation changed my life for the better, and it helped my parents focus on their goals for the first time in their lives. I cannot thank you enough for everything the foundation has done for me. I cannot wait to be in a position where I can contribute to the foundation and give back to the community that got me through some of the most challenging times in my life. Terry Give Back Day Mr. and Mrs. Terry were honored for their philanthropy in a proclamation by the City of Houston on March 22, 2011. The city named this day “Nancy and Howard Terry Day.” Although it is a proclamation of a single city, this day is a reminder of the farreaching impact that can be made by investing in education. Over the years, Terry Scholars in Houston honored Nancy and Howard Terry Day through acts of service. In spring 2023, the Terry Foundation announced that March 22nd - now known as Terry Give Back Day - would become a wider celebration of the many ways Terry Scholars give back to the world around them. Terry Give Back Day 2023 also marked the official launch of the Terry Scholars Fund, a new public charity created to help donors support the Terry Scholarship Endowment.
