16 Celebrating 35 Years of Terry

Chairman’s Letter

It is a new year and the Terry Foundation continues to develop future leaders of Texas through education! With pleasure I report that our Foundation remains strong and our scholars continue to flourish. Our endowment continues to outperform the general market, thanks largely to the skill and foresight of Ed Cotham, our outgoing Chief Investment Officer (now fully retired) and his capable successor, K.K. Eschbach (TAMU 2004). We will miss Ed’s market knowledge and general advice, though we are pleased he has agreed to add “CIO Emeritus” to his many titles and awards. The Foundation owes much to Ed’s guidance and assistance over the years. He will be greatly missed.

In March 2020, few people knew what Zoom was and now most of us are skillful users! After two years of Zoom, in 2022 we finally got back to mostly “in person” interviews. One of Terry’s core values is selecting scholars individually and we believe there is no substitute for a personal handshake. Going forward, we expect all interviews, banquets and picnics to be “in person,” for which we are all thankful.

Today our Foundation supports 728 scholars at 13 public universities across Texas with a “spend” of about $21 million. The Foundation has matriculated 6,236 scholars (current and alumni) since our beginning in 1987 at a total cost of $354.7 million. We will have 25 interview panels in the spring and award 320 new scholarships with a budget of about $24.5 million.

About the Design Theme

Unique: u·nique | /yo•oˈnēk/ belonging or connected to (one particular person, group, or place). being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. particularly remarkable, special, or unusual.

The Terry Community is unique because each Terry Scholar is remarkable in their own way. They each have an individual identity as distinct as fingerprints. However, they all share the distinguished honor of being Terry Scholars and everything that identity represents. Terry Scholars each leave their own unique mark on the world, but they are united in their common dedication to using their gifts and the gift of an education to make an impact.

This publication and the 2021-2022 Year in Review celebrate the Terry Community for the traits that make it special. It honors the diverse characteristics and experiences of every Terry Scholar and the way that those individual attributes coalesce to form the common, distinguished identity of the Terry Community as a whole.

Our alumni base has grown to 5,005 supported by 5 Terry Scholar Alumni Association chapters. If you have not joined the alumni chapter in your area, we encourage you to do so. We are gratified to have 2,711 alumni users of Terry Connect, (www.terryconnect.com) which is 54% of our alumni base. Terry Connect directly supports alumni as well as current scholars. If you have not tried it, you should.

Incoming Terry Scholars continue to have great need with over 71% being Pell eligible. We are gratified that our Terry family (alumni, employers, organizations, parents and friends) recognize this need by giving back to the Foundation financially. In 2022, we received 363 separate gifts from 87 donors totaling $136,493, a new record we expect to surpass in 2023. I am especially pleased to report that the Board has created a parallel public charity (Terry Scholars Fund) that is now accepting contributions that are used exclusively to support Terry Scholarships. We thank Meyling Ly Ortiz (TAMU 1999), Maddy Kulkarni (UT 2001) and Harrison Pierce (UTSA 2008) for their service on the Terry Scholars Fund Board. I encourage you to think of the Terry Foundation and the Terry Scholars Fund when making charitable contributions. We are not the only worthy cause, but none have more positive long term benefits. All gifts directly support our educational efforts. No contribution is too small, and in the aggregate, they help further Howard and Nancy Terry’s vision of developing future leaders of Texas through education.

We take a moment to welcome our newest staff members, Shaunon McClellan (she is not a Terry Scholar but she got here as quickly as she could) and Kyle Knight (UH 2013). We wish the best for Becky Adams as she enters retirement after nearly 20 years of service. Our amazing staff is truly the best of the best. Thanks to all for making 2022 another successful and productive year.

Our Founders Howard and Nancy Terry

In 1987, Howard and Nancy Terry founded what is now the largest private source for scholarships in Texas. The Terrys believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand would, in turn, give back - to the Foundation, to their college campuses, to their communities and beyond. Today, the success and impact of thousands of Terry Scholars stand as testimonies to the wisdom of that belief.

The 2022 - 2023 academic year marks the Foundation’s 35th anniversary of awarding scholarships! It is truly amazing to think about the impact that Howard and Nancy Terry have had on higher education in Texas.

6,236 Terry Scholarships totaling more than $354 million dollars have been invested in outstanding Texas students since 1987.

Those Terry Scholars have impacted their families and communities through the gift of a college education, and they steward the Terrys’ mission and vision into the future.

Our Mission

To develop future leaders of Texas through access to education.

$485.79MM endowment size as of December 31, 2022

Our Vision

To create a community of educated leaders who utilize their talents to strengthen the state of Texas and impact the world.

Pillars of Excellence

SCHOLARSHIP LEADERSHIP SERVICE COMMUNITY

The strength of the Terry Community lies in the diverse perspectives, gifts and goals of Terry Scholars. Although the Terry Pillars of Excellence are common standards held by all Terry Scholars, each individual embodies and demonstrates them in a number of different ways.

The Terry Foundation is pleased to announce that Kristin “K.K.” Eschbach (TAMU 2004) has joined our team as Chief Investment Officer (CIO). K.K. replaced Edward Cotham, Jr., former Foundation President and Chief Investment Officer when he officially retired at the end of 2022.

“As Howard and Nancy Terry intended, the Foundation’s vision is to create a community of educated leaders who utilize their talents to strengthen the state of Texas and impact the world. Since 1987, the Foundation has awarded over 6,000 scholarships and invested more than $338 million to send students to 13 Texas universities. Our community of educated leaders continues to grow and thrive. I think that Howard and Nancy Terry would be proud of their Foundation’s accomplishments, and I know that they would be delighted to see its future management in the hands of people who care so passionately about its mission.”

Cotham,

Our Organization Self-Evaluation Letter (SEL) Committee

A Self-Evaluation Letter (SEL) is written by a Terry Scholar to the Foundation. The letter typically includes academic and non-academic goals set for the coming year and outlines how a Scholar intends to meet their goals. In addition, Scholars can review the goals they have set in their previous year’s letter and candidly evaluate how well they achieved those goals.

“I look forward each year to reading the great accomplishments of each of the scholars and being able to respond back on a one to one level. Not only does it feel great to give back, but I also very much enjoy being able to respond and provide feedback on a more personal level. SEL is such a rewarding experience and I look forward to serving on that committee each year!”

Self-Evaluation Letters

“The Terry scholarship has meant unconditional support for me. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have graduated debt free, but most importantly, I am most grateful for all of the support that the Terry Foundation showed me throughout the past 4 years. At every event, I always heard “we are proud of you”, “you are here for a reason”, etc. and I cannot express how valuable that encouragement was for me. At many events, I felt like I wasn’t deserving of being a Terry Scholar, but the friends and staff that I met at every event motivated me to be the best Terry Scholar that I can be. Thank you so much, and I hope to make Mr. Terry and the Foundation proud.”

Our Organization

For a number of years, the Terry Foundation offered the Terry Assistance Program (TAP) as a resource for current students and Terry Scholar Alumni to connect and network. Terry Alumni joined the TAP List to become mentors for their fellow Scholars. Today, Terry Connect is the official networking platform for Terry Scholars and allows anyone to give back and serve as a resource within this community. Scholars may activate their account any time after fall Orientation in their first semester and may choose whether they would like to add a “willing to help” label.

engagement badges

Terry Connect Engagement Badges are assigned to user profiles based on their activity within the Terry Community. Some badges can be earned automatically through actions on Terry Connect; others can be earned for contributions made outside of the platform (e.g., hosting a table at Terry Banquet). Some badges are also assigned for the current year and will reset to be earned again in the next year.

In October 2018, Gissele Garrido (TWU 2018) contacted Christen Barron (UH 2007) on Terry Connect to learn more about her experience pursuing a Masters degree in Social Work. They formed a mentoring relationship that lasted through Gissele’s time as an undergraduate student, her master’s program, and into her first job after earning her license.

Gissele says:

“I really value the Terry Connect platform because it allows us to form community and connections with fellow Scholars. It is a platform in which we are able to connect and share experiences as Terrys as well as our journeys in our respective fields. I was a Child Development major at Texas Woman’s University and was still trying to decipher what I wanted my career to be. I was interested in Child Life and in social work as well. I joined Terry Connect and searched for people in the realm of social work. I saw that Christen obtained her MSW degree and also that she went to the University of Houston. Christen was so welcoming to answer my questions regarding the social work profession. That led to a journey of mentorship!

Christen has followed me from pondering the possibility of social work, to my undergrad internships in non-profits, applying for grad school and reviewing my application materials, to notifying her I was admitted to my selected schools, to selecting UH, to graduating and now working in the field!

It was amazing that I formed a relationship of support throughout my time as an undergrad. I am so grateful to have Christen’s support and encouragement in my journey and it was all through Terry Connect.”

A Few Examples:

Christen says:

“I am thrilled to celebrate Gissele’s accomplishment. Completing this type of degree during the pandemic with increased demands on social workers, speaks volumes about Gissele’s level of dedication to the field and the community.”

Gissele is now a Clinic Social Worker 1 with Legacy Community Health. She helps patients who have various needs: accessing food pantries, government programs, legal assistance, housing, intimate partner violence, school advocacy, and much more.”

The Terry Foundation is the reason why I was able to graduate from college debt free. In my resume I have the ‘Terry Foundation Scholarship’ listed as an honor, and it is a constant reminder that I should always care for my fellow Terry Scholars regardless of where I am or what I am doing. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to network with Terrys from all over Texas, and I will keep an eye out for past, present and future Terry Scholars so that Mr. and Mrs. Terry’s wishes can be accomplished.”

The 2022-2023 school year marks the Terry Foundation’s 35 th Anniversary of awarding scholarships. We celebrate 35 years of Terry Scholars leaving their mark on campus and beyond!

Having switched from Chemical Engineering to Humanities, my journey has been full of ‘no’s’ — no’s from my family, no’s from my peers, and no’s from my past teachers. While I know they were just looking out for me, I knew my initial path wasn’t the right fit for my life. When people ask me what the Terry Foundation means to me, I smile and said that it represents the first ‘yes’ — the first words of encouragement to follow this path of uncertainty and achieve my dreams. I thank the Terry Foundation for being this beacon of hope for not only me but for hundreds of Terry Scholars for generations to come. I will cherish this experience for the rest of my life.”

“The empowerment and encouragement of having a whole family believe in you even when the world is on your shoulders… that’s so powerful. The Terry Foundation and scholarship has empowered me to achieve the dreams I have had since I was a little girl.”

Jennifer Romero, TWU 2018

“The Terry Scholarship has meant everything to me. It has provided me with family, mentorship, and community that I am so thankful for. I have been provided with all the resources to succeed over the last 4 years and am in the position I am today because of the Terry Foundation. I cannot thank the foundation enough for all they have done for me the last 4 years. I look forward to staying plugged in to a Terry community as I move to Dallas and work to continually give back to the foundation as I begin my career.”

Our Funding Addressing the Need

The Terry Foundation Scholarship is a “last dollar” award that covers the expense of attending each Terry affiliated university up to the total Cost of Attendance (COA). The total Cost of Attendance (COA) includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, as well as transportation and other miscellaneous student expenses. The cost of attendance at Terry-affiliated universities has increased 2-4% per year over the last 5 years. Terry Scholar stipends are set individually per student to ensure that no Scholar is under-funded. The last-dollar approach ensures that the Terry scholarship is adjusted each year to “fill the gap” created by changes in outside funding sources which students often experience after their freshman year.

“The Terry Scholarship has meant everything to me. I can definitely say that I would not be who I am or where I am without the Terry Scholarship and Terry Foundation. I had no idea truly how much I needed this support system, but I am very glad I was lucky enough to receive it these past several years. To the Terry Foundation I am eternally grateful.”

“Studying abroad for me showed me what I really value in life. For me, that is people, conversation, writing, and genuinely learning about my passions. After freshmen year, I was simply going through the motions of life and school. I felt like I was thrown into college to figure out my career path, without taking moments to tune into my passions and joys. Studying abroad gave me experiences that taught me to live in the moment, appreciate the people around you, and never take any piece of knowledge for granted.”

“Traveling across the world by myself has been nothing that I have expected it to be but everything I didn’t know I wanted or needed. I have learned to slow down and enjoy the experiences of life without so many distractions. I have found the joy in slow mornings of reading and drinking my first cup of coffee or walking the streets of somewhere new and magical or be able to sit outside and admire the view. I have learned to savor the little moments as I now realize each is unique and beautiful in its own way. Even more so, the biggest blessing has been the challenge to find my own individuality in the unfamiliarity of it all. I have had to learn who I am outside of what I do or who my friends are or any other worldly aspect. It has been hard; I will not deny - but each day I am finding more pieces of myself and learning more about the person I want to become.”

“The Terry Foundation gave me all of my closest friends, an extensive and proactive alumni network, and considerable professional and leadership development. Although the scholarship was instrumental in me going to college and succeeding there, it’s just so much more than that. A lot of people have helped me get to where I am today, but the Terry Foundation is the single greatest factor that has helped me attain the life I never thought I’d have. The Terry Scholarship is life-changing, and I’m so excited that I get to continue giving back to the Foundation for the rest of my life.”

“Being a Terry means knowing that there is always a strong support system rooting for you every step of the way and that you are part of a large family that will always have your back. The Terry Foundation has meant everything to me and more, and it provided me with the financial freedom and abundant resources to accomplish so much during my time as an undergrad. My journey is just beginning, and I cannot wait to take you along with me.”
