About the Design Theme The 2021 Annual Report is dedicated to the perseverance of our Terry Scholars and their devotion to this community. The design of this publication is inspired by the philosophy of kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending pottery to fill cracks and attach broken pieces with gold or silver rather than hide them. This concept of highlighting “imperfections” reminds us that they should be celebrated, not disguised, because they make us who we are. This artform, like personal reflection and rebuilding, requires a large investment of time and effort. The finished product is not the same as it once was, and it is not “perfect,” but it is undoubtedly more beautiful because of the work and care put into remaking it. Terry Scholars are never expected to be “perfect.” Instead, each Scholar is encouraged to do their best and to help bring out the best in others. The “cracks” shown throughout this book are also meant to symbolize roots, which have given us a sprout of hope for the future ahead. We all experience the inevitable growth achieved through struggles., and we are immensely proud of everything that Terry Scholars have accomplished during such challenging times over the last year.

CHAIRMAN’S LETTER What a difference a year makes! With pleasure, I report that our Foundation remains strong, and our Scholars continue to flourish. Our endowment enjoyed a dramatic financial recovery in 2021 and we find ourselves in a more comfortable place, though we are never able to award as many scholarships as we would like. 2020 was a humbling experience, but it served to remind us that our success is not measured by one year or even one decade but by the successful lives of those we help to educate: one Scholar at a time. That has always been true, and it remains true today. As of December 31, 2021, our Endowment stood at $555.4 million, a nice recovery from 2020, and we enjoy good returns in a tough market. Today we support 779 Scholars at 13 public universities in Texas, including 725 Traditional and 54 Transfer Scholars. The Foundation has matriculated 6,012 Scholars since our beginning in 1987 at a total cost of $338.8 million. Our interviews were conducted virtually for the second year, continuing a divergence from our goal of “in person” interviews. Likewise, our spring picnics and fall orientations were virtual, again not our first choice but the right decision under adverse circumstances. We are working hard to return to “in person” interviews and events. We select our Scholars individually and we prefer to assure them of our support in person. Academically, Terry Scholars continue to excel. Our September 2021 entering freshman cohort of Terry Scholars had 23 valedictorians. Our Traditional Scholars had a GPA of 3.673 while the Transfer Scholars had a GPA of 3.642. Just as meaningfully, our Scholars fill important leadership roles at their respective universities. We are justly proud of the academic and personal achievements of our Scholars who continue to be among the best of the best. We continue to grow our Terry Alumni base. We have 4,753 Alumni and 6 Terry Scholar Alumni Association chapters (including a new one for West Texas and New Mexico). We are especially gratified that we have 2,436 Alumni users of Terry Connect. (www.terryconnect.com) and I encourage each of you to use it regularly. Remember that you have over 4,000 best friends who are among the most successful individuals you will ever meet. When we all help each other, our individual success is ensured. This year, once again, Terry Alumni made substantial financial contributions, increasing in number and amount, for which we are truly thankful. The Board has an active development committee focused on enhancing ways in which our friends and Alumni can give back financially to enable us to give even more scholarships. I encourage you to think of the Terry Foundation when you “give back;” the Foundation is a conduit helping finance education in Texas. We are a non-profit, and all contributions go directly to support our educational efforts. No contribution is too small, and in the aggregate, those contributions make a positive difference to the success of our Scholars. We tip our collective hats to Director Ed Cotham who has taken Emeritus status while continuing to serve as Chief Investment Officer. We are pleased to welcome Brandy Horton and Kathryn Flowers as our newest Board Members; they are already active and working to help fulfill our mission: “Developing future leaders of Texas through access to higher education.” Thanks to all, including our amazing staff (the best of the best), for making 2021 a remarkably successful and productive year, despite difficult circumstances. Good luck and best wishes to all.
Rhett G. Campbell
Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors

OUR FOUNDERS Howard and Nancy Terry
In 1987, Howard and Nancy Terry founded what is now the largest private source for scholarships in Texas. The Terrys believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand would, in turn, give back – to the Foundation, to their college campuses, to their communities and beyond. Today, the success and impact of thousands of Terry Scholars stand as testimonies to the wisdom of that belief.
2
Our Mission
To develop future leaders of Texas through access to education.
Our Vision
To create a community of educated leaders who utilize their talents to strengthen the state of Texas and impact the world.
Pillars of Excellence SCHOLARSHIP LEADERSHIP SERVICE COMMUNITY The strength of the Terry Family lies in the diverse perspectives, gifts and goals of Terry Scholars. Although the Terry Pillars of Excellence are common standards held by all Terry Scholars, each individual embodies and demonstrates them in a number of different ways.

“When I started my term as an Alumni Advisory Board member, the intent has always been to give back to the Terry Foundation, but I didn’t realize the magnitude this experience has served for the Terry Community and myself. In the past three years, bringing my own unique perspectives, I’ve been privileged to share my experiences, gain access to learn and understand the decisions the Foundation makes, and act as a conduit between the Scholars, Alumni and the Foundation. Together, we have chartered, developed, and grown many committees to enhance the Terry Community. “ Kim Mai Le, UH 2010 Advisory Board Member and SEL Response Committee Member

OUR ORGANIZATION Self-Evaluation Letter (SEL) Committee A Self-Evaluation Letter (SEL) is written by a Terry Scholar to the Foundation. The letter typically includes academic and non-academic goals set for the coming year and outlines how a Scholar intends to meet their goals. In addition, Scholars can review the goals they have set in their previous year’s letter and candidly evaluate how well they achieved those goals.

“Reading and responding to self-evaluation letters is something I look forward to every year. I see it as a simple way to give back that makes a big impact. I really enjoy connecting with the current students and sharing the things I wish somebody had told me when I was in college. Reading about all the things that Terry Scholars are accomplishing makes me even more proud to be a part of this organization. I also think receiving responses from Alumni helps the students think about how they might give back after they graduate.” Blane Skiles, UNT 2013 Advisory Board Member and SEL Response Committee Member

OUR ORGANIZATION TerryConnect.com “I want to express my gratitude for the expansive networking opportunities that undergraduate Terrys have with Terry Alumni. As a senior, it can be very overwhelming to see the finish line while still in school. Although the feeling is common amongst seniors, I knew that I could rely on my Terry family for guidance. This proved to be true when I reached out to fellow Terry alum, George, for interview prep and career advice. After countless messages, calls, and pep-talks, I felt prepared with George’s wise words and interviewed for a position at my dream corporation. I am so thankful to announce with great joy and pride that I have accepted a full time offer with AT&T as a Financial Analyst after graduating in May 2022 from Texas Woman’s University!” Jennifer Romero, TWU 2018 (success story shared on Terry Connect)

“The Terry Scholarship has given me freedom. The education it afforded me opened my eyes to the limitless opportunities for my life, and I now know I can achieve whatever I set out to. It is truly liberating and I am honored beyond measure to have been given such a gift." Lauralee Curtis, UT-Austin 2018
“ The Terry Scholarship has meant the world to me. The Foundation took a chance on me, and I am forever indebted for the opportunities I was given. Throughout these undergrad years, I have faced many challenges but with the support of my Terry family, I was able to persevere and find my true self. I will never forget the day I found out I was a Terry Scholar, and I will always identify as a Terry Scholar with pride.” Amela Dizdarevic, TTU 2017

OUR FUNDING Addressing the Need The Terry Foundation Scholarship is a “last dollar” award that covers the expense of attending each Terry-aff iliated university up to the established Cost of Attendance (COA) set between our program and each school. This Cost of Attendance (COA) calculation is reviewed and conf irmed with each campus on an annual basis. The cost of attendance at Terry-aff iliated universities has increased 2-4% per year over the last 5 years.

After I received this scholarship three years ago, I can honestly say that my perspective towards myself positively changed. During the ups and downs of college, I have reminded myself that I am a Terry Scholar and I became one for a certain reason. The Terry Foundation saw something in me that I had yet to discover about myself. Throughout my whole journey here at UTEP, I have been able appreciate what this scholarship has gifted me. This scholarship has gifted me lifelong friends, a 4-year degree that resulted in being debt free, and most of all, the recognition and affiliation of a grand foundation. I will forever be grateful of this scholarship and of the countless memories and opportunities I have created because of it. Katarina Cordero, UTEP 2018

Receiving the Terry Gold Pen means so much to me. It not only signifies that I successfully completed my time in college, but also that I am part of an amazing organization that will continue to support me going forward. Being finished with college is bittersweet, I have really enjoyed my time at the University of Houston. Through the Terry Organization I met so many great people who I hope to stay connected with going forward. Every time I look at my Terry Gold Pen it reminds me of how thankfuI I am to have the Terry Foundation and of the great times I had with my fellow Terrys in college. My Terry Gold Pen also signifies something else. It signifies that I am capable of so much and that the Foundation has put its faith in me to do good in this world and make it a better place. My pen reminds me that there are people who believe in me. I can’t wait to use my pen to accomplish great things. Sydney Young, UH 2017

I can’t find the words to truly describe what The Terry Foundation means to me, but what I do know is that it gave me the opportunity to study a major that I would not have been able to study at any other school I had in mind and I got to meet some of the smartest and greatest people through this Foundation. My parents migrated from Mexico and gave my siblings and me everything we could have asked for to be successful in our future. I remember getting the email in the middle of class and calling my mom and dad to tell them they don’t have to worry about helping me pay for college. Saying ‘yes’ to giving back was the best choice I ever made because Terry gave me an education, my future, and some amazing friendships and memories that I’ll always cherish and remember.
