Contents It is always a humbling experience to write the Chairman’s letter to the friends, Scholars, Alumni, and contributors of the Terry Foundation each January. It is a pleasant task because I get to summarize for others the good

that we do. However, it is humbling because I know that our success is the product of so many people working incredibly hard to help fulfill our mission of developing future leaders by helping fund their education.

As of November 2, 2019, our Endowment stood at $520.7 million and supported 1,193 Terry Scholars, both traditional and transfer, at 13 public universities in

Texas. Our retention rate is strong at 91.7%. Our entering freshman cohort of traditional scholars had an average SAT score of 1266, and the traditional scholars had an average college GPA of 3.599, while the transfer scholars had an average college GPA of 3.576. We clearly are picking highly intelligent, motivated and hard-working individuals. Their continued academic success makes us all very proud.

We continue to grow our Terry Scholar Alumni base, which is stronger and more active than ever.

We have 4,042 alumni and 5 Terry Scholar Alumni Association (TSAA) chapters, now including West Texas. I am especially gratified that we have 1,839 Alumni users of Terry Connect, the website where Alumni and Scholars interact for the good of all. Terry Alumni, if you are not on

Scholarship Leadership Service Community

The strength of the Terry Family lies in the diverse perspectives, gifts, and goals of Terry Scholars.

Although the Terry Pillars of Excellence are common standards held by all Terry Scholars, each individual embodies and demonstrates them in a number of different ways.

In 1987, Howard and Nancy Terry founded what is now the largest private source for scholarships in Texas. The Terrys believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand would, in turn, give back – to the Foundation, to their college campuses, to their communities and beyond. Today, the success and impact of thousands of Terry Scholars stand as testimonies to the wisdom of that belief.

Mr. and Mrs. Terry passed away in 2012, but their legacy lives on in each Terry Scholar who leaves a mark on the world around them.

I embody the Pillar of Scholarship by engaging myself in my coursework and dedicating my time to understanding the dense curriculum. I strive to excel in my classes while also ensuring that the metric of what I have learned is not necessarily defined by a grade, but rather by my ability to apply the knowledge.

SCHOLARSHIP

This year I embodied the Foundation’s Pillar of Scholarship by dedicating a lot of my time to my education and to immersing myself in learningdense environments. I interned this past summer at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in a Statistical Thermodynamics and Molecular Simulation Laboratory where I did research among PhD candidates. Having to apply knowledge that I had already learned while also learning new curriculum that was outside of the scope of an undergraduate degree, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the learning process and learning just for the sake of learning. I believe in the necessity of always learning throughout life and to staying teachable forever.

As a second-generation American, I was taught the importance of education from a young age, and I think that this year I really started to understand and implement what it was my parents have always wanted for me with the support of the Terry Foundation.

Forough Askarirad UTSA 2018

LEADERSHIP

I embody the Pillar of Leadership by taking the initiative to create change on UTSA’s campus and empowering students to seek support when they need it. Mental Health Day at UTSA was a 7-month long project that included planning, coordinating, communicating, mapping, advertising, and working with organizations, students, professors, and professionals. Working alongside a variety of people allowed me to not only grow skills for what it takes to construct an event, but grow as person as well. I was unsure of what I was getting myself into at first, but I now know that my limits can be pushed further and further after having this experience and the support of the Terry Scholars.

I am very happy with how the first Mental Health Day at UTSA turned out, we had over 100 students attend the tabling event and the discussion that followed! I do plan to make this an annual event, because I truly believe it will help shift the conversations we are having about mental health and end the stigma associated with it!

SERVICE I embody the Pillar of Service by understanding and being willing to help others, especially the youth within my community. As a Coach and future educator, I’m in a position where I get to interact with many kids and serve as a mentor/ role model to them. I take pride in being the most positive and effective role model that I can be in order to see each kid grow as an individual and succeed with their goals in life.

Growing up, the most valuable lessons that I learned all came through sports, and the coaches that I’ve had were some of my best mentors I had ever encountered.

Sometimes, kids feel like they may not have that person to help teach them the small things, and with coaching, I have the opportunity to help them grow into young adults and be there for them when they might not have anyone else. The impact I believe I am making with those that I work with is leading by example and showing them that with hard work, they can achieve goals that they may have thought were just dreams.

Angelica Avila UTD 2018

COMMUNITY

I embody the Pillar of Community by hosting the 2019 UT Dallas Terry Alumni Networking Event, which fostered connections among scholars and alumni through meaningful conversations, cultivated mentorships, and contributed to a long-lasting family. It was an honor to host the event and to be surrounded by the eagerness of Terry Alumni to give back.

The Terry Alumni and Foundation’s continued involvement further emphasizes the philosophy that success is measured not by one’s status, yet rather by the people you have inspired, impacted, and helped to grow to achieve their dreams.

Over 70 Terry Scholar Alumni and current students came together in November for the annual UT-Dallas Terry Alumni Networking Event. 30 Terry Alumni from different fields and universities gave their time to meet students at the event, which featured 11 breakout sessions and an alumni panel. Each session offered the Scholars a chance to network with a Terry Alum in their field of interest.

Additionally, the panel allowed alumni to provide focused advice to scholars.
