Kakeyla Sherrif-Manning Shares Nuances About Her Life, Business, and Dynamic Family

J

ackson Expose’: Tell us about your upbringing and your family.

I was born and raised in Jackson, MS. I am the eldest of three girls who include Tera Sheriff & Tiffany Sheriff. We also have a step sister, Cynthia Brown, and brother Derek Brown. We were raised in North Jackson on Plaza street in a three bedroom home. Our father was a very tall & strict man, but he worked very hard. He worked at Illinois Central Gulf at night. While our mom was very meek and mild, she worked the morning shift at Milwaukee Electrical Tools. We were not the average black girls growing up in a predominately white neighborhood. J.E.: What was it like raising a special needs child? As a mother, my journey with a special needs child was extremely hard. My husband and I were very much in denial but I knew that in order to get the accurate diagnosis of Autism, (which people had been telling me about) was going to be very difficult. I decided to call my pediatrician to let her

know I suspected my son may have autism. She made some very important calls to get us seen as soon as possible. There was a month long wait, however. Then my husband and I received the devastating news that Thomas did in fact have a severe case of Autism. We were told he would never be able to read, talk, or do anything on his own. I honestly didn’t know what to do until I became informed about the groups that deal with autism and the amount of help there was concerning autism. Jackson Expose’: What motivated you to start your own healthcare agency? My experience with having a son with Autism was one of the reasons I wanted to start my own healthcare business. Plus I already had a passion to work with children who have special needs. Being an LPN at that time also made me want to provide a service for private duty nursing, particularly since I was providing the service myself. Last but not least, people would request my help with their own kids but I didn’t know how to help. But through hard work and determination I learned how to provide services for everyone from ages 0-99.

for these individuals as well as for my company known as Specialty Healthcare Nursing Agency. I began mailing applications, getting t-shirts made, and car magnets. Anything I could do to get people to know my name. The most difficult part about starting a business is that people don’t know your new business name which means they are afraid of you and your new company. Old business names are what people are familiar with seeing, but it’s just like a new pair of shoes, if you keep wearing them you will soon break them in and get used to them. It was the same way with people getting used to my business. Jackson Expose’: What Contributes to your massive growth today?

Kakeyla: What contributes to my massive growth today is hard work, dedication, and honesty. My mornings start usually by 4:00 a.m. and ending by 10:00 p.m. each night. Every day is a new day. I go to bed every night determined to do better than I did yesterday. Being an entrepreneur is very hard. It is not easy at all!

What contributes to my massive growth today is hard work, dedication, and honesty.

People don’t know about the hard times and when employees don’t show up for work and that I sometimes put my uniform back on and I too become a caregiver and a boss at the same time. People also don’t realize that I have a healthcare agency, an adult day care, a transportation company, and also a non-profit organization, Autism MS, that provides services state wide. I also serve as a board member on a few boards. Which also means that I don’t have a lot of time for family and friends. That’s the part that makes me sad but God and family mean the world to me.

J.E.: What was it like when you first started your business? My struggles in the beginning were not money related. Instead, the challenge was getting reliable and trustworthy employees. Not only did I need individuals to put in applications but also I wanted them to have a passion

KAKEYLA S. MANNING’S Interview Continues

Jackson Expose’: Are you the only entrepreneur in your family? I am not the only entrepreneur in my family. My sister Tera Sheriff is very smart as well. She formally worked for JPS as a school teacher and she also was an employee for the FBI. But I needed her to quit her jobs. She was very hesitant at first. But one day I called her and asked her where she was and she said at her 3rd job, which was driving a school bus. I simply jokingly said: “Girl if you don’t get off that school bus and get over here to help me run my transportation company I will kill you girl.” So that’s what she did. After being under my wings she started a sister company named Specialtee Healthcare Transportation. My Business is Specialty & hers is Specialtee which makes it unique but also signals that we are sisters. Last but not least my baby sister Tiffany who is an LPN, owns Attentive Healthcare, which is located in Flowood MS. She also provides Private Duty Nursing for the State of Mississippi and Alabama. She owns a T-shirt company ‘Twisted Epiphany Tees and Candles”. Tiffany also thinks she is the prettiest of us all. But what she does not understand is that I am the oldest and she looks just like her big sister. But we all work from sun up to sun down. That’s what we Sheriff girls have been taught - not to steal, or kill for what we want

but to simply work for it. That is what we know how to do and that’s simply why we are entrepreneurs at our finest. The Sheriff Sisters have made and will continue to make our family proud and legacy alive. We are like a train, so move if you see us coming thru because it’s strictly business. Jackson Expose’: What is your vision for Specialty Healthcare? My vision for Specialty Healthcare is simply nothing but growth to the 10th power. Remember this was just a vision of mine years ago. I want to have employees to want to work for me because of who we are and what we are today. Mistakes have been made along the way but now we are the new and improved. I am working on Specialty Healthcare Assisted Living Facility as we speak so please stay tuned. J. E: What advice would you give to those who are thinking of going into business for themselves? The advice that I would like to give other business owners who are just starting their business is to never give up and to remember everyday is a new day. Learn your guidelines, know your rules and regulations, and know everything about your business and if help is needed pick up the phone and ask for help.

Ms Morton says that she now uses her spiritual gifts and talents to glorify God thru music and ministry. One thing is for certain is that at ALL times no matter how she may feel she says she will ALWAYS uplift JESUS CHRIST in her music.
