When I went to my first fiber festival years and years ago I was amazed at all the vibrant colors and textures that I experienced there. The vendors were amazing and I knew I had landed in a community where I could to just hang out and absorb all the knowledge that was floating around. This Wool and Fiber Arts Show Program was designed to recreate the feeling of being at an event in person. Due to Covid-19 our lives have changed dramatically and our festivals are being canceled left and right. Our monthly online fiber festival sales have been a blessing to many and a joy to see develop. The facebook group "WAFA" was started back in April by our beloved founder Ellen from Zephyr Creek Farms. It has blossomed into more than just a facebook group to visit. It is now a community that leans on each other and provides an outlet for our craft and to share the love of fiber and the process of transforming it. I hope you enjoy the virtual walk through of our wool and fiber arts festival and are able to join us on the last weeked of each month for our "Live" sales event.

Meet the Fiber Artist

Anna Holden

Tell us how you got started as a fiber artist, did you teach yourself? While I had on and off knit most of my life, I first really got into the fiber arts at 15, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been about 5 years now. I had loved rabbits for a while, and decided to take the plunge into raising English Angora rabbits. I was homeschooled, so I had a lot more time to pursue and dedicate to hobbies like this, and Angora rabbits were a perfectly reasonable choice. My family lives on 10 acres, and we had a barn, so I had the space as well. I had only planned on having a couple of them, but after holding my very first one, I was completely in love. So, really, it just kicked off from there. .

For almost five years I raised, bred, and showed competitive English Angora rabbits with a focus on high quality, dense wool. As a side job, and to pay for rabbit food costs, I began selling their wool and learning to spin it. Selling a little fiber on the side quickly turned into starting my fiber arts business when the demand for my wool increased. I fell down that metaphorical rabbit hole quickly, and started learning to work with other fibers, blending, and so much more. Meet the Fiber Artist

I am completely self taught. The very first wool I ever spun was angora from my own rabbits, on a top whorl drop spindle. I watched YouTube http://moiraifiberarts.com videos and read everything, and just absorbed as much information as I could get my hands on. As I started getting into the fiber community I learned a lot more, but most everything I taught myself through videos, trial and error, and lots of practice. Honestly, that’s how I’ve learned most things. I eventually did spinning demos in public at an event for a couple of years, and slowly transitioned my business over into more than just Angora products.

Now, things are different. This year I moved to East TN, and fiber arts became my full time job. I’m autistic and chronically ill, so I have a hard time working “normal” jobs. 5 years ago, I never expected to be here, or that this business would become my whole job. This hobby and passion turned business is my outlet that gives me the ability to create beautiful and soft things as my job, and work from home. Even though I don’t raise English Angoras anymore, I’m now working on compiling my years of knowledge into guides for future angora owners. That’s how all of this started and the passion for them is still, and always will be, there. cont .....pg 9

Describe your unique style I love all things extremely soft. That is what quickly became my focus and niche for my business. I raised Angora rabbits, and have Pygora goats, and wanted to create blends and products that really showcased these wonderful fibers. I spent a lot of time pairing fibers to find the perfect blends, my favorite being an Angora/Pygora/Cormo that I used to carry. There has always seemed to be a misconception that finer luxury fibers aren’t suitable for more than delicate items, or that they must be blended in small percentages. So really, I did the opposite of that. High percentage luxury fibers paired with soft yet sturdy wools, suitable for all kinds of projects. While my access to my home grown luxury fibers is limited now, I still try to do this with whatever luxury fiber I can get my hands on. What is one of the biggest challenges with working with fiber art ? For me, personally, I have chronic pain that can make the more physical aspects of this job a lot harder for me. I can’t spin for long periods of time anymore, and only work the drum carder on my best days. Using hand combs especially is not as easy as it used to be. While I love it, it’s definitely a more physical hobby/job. Aside from that, probably just trying to get the same dye color again. I’ll admit that I have never measured dyes a day in my life, and I just eyeball it every time. Most of the time it works. A lot of the time it doesn’t. I’ve learned to just roll with it. Cont..pg 57

Your colours are quite distinctive to you, what inspires the colors you use? This year, I developed a new product line that I call Film Inspired Fibers. I’m a film nerd at heart, with a love for cinematography, so I decided to pair these two passions together. I pick a single shot from a film that I love, with colors that inspire me, and create a batt based on that shot. I’ve done shots from Underwater, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Witch, John Wick - and more. I’m particularly drawn to shots with bright neons against darker backgrounds. Really, this is what inspires the colors in the majority of my products now. There’s a lot of color theory and work that goes into each shot in a film, and it translates beautifully into fiber. I usually tend to lean towards darker/moodier shots or themes, mostly because that’s where my taste in film leans, but even the darker or gruesome shots can be turned into something beautiful with fiber. While film and the fiber arts are completely different creative mediums, I just knew that I had to bring them together to create something unique and beautiful.
