By Ferry www.bcferries.com A popular BC circle route, the Heritage Discovery, entails taking the ferry between Vancouver Island andthe Mainland, stopping in Terrace when driving to or from Prince Rupert. By Rail www.viarail.ca Did you know that you can travel the length of our great country via train? VIA Rail trains pass through Terrace several times a week travelling between Prince George and Prince Rupert. Weaving in and out of the mountains passing by raging rivers, the train allows access to wilderness sights and scenery not visible from the highway. The Via Rail station is located at the George Little House at the base of Kalum Street. Passenger trains don’t run every day. The Skeena River
High in the coastal mountains of Northwestern British Columbia, at the edge of the Spasizi Plateau, the Skeena River begins its 610 kilometre run to the Pacific. Much like today, the mighty Skeena has been the region’s lifeline for millions of years. The Tsimshian were the first people to occupy the area more than 10,000 years ago and they depended on the river for survival. At the turn of the
century the Skeena became an important transportation artery for pioneer settlers, traders and miners. And so began the era of the riverboats shipping valuable goods up and down the river. Today you’ll find lone or groups of fishers landing the big one along the river banks or cruising the currents in their boats.
TIP: For the soul of the Skeena look to the totem carvings, listen to the songs and drumbeats and marvel at the artistic genius of the Tsimshian, ancient people of the “River of Mists.”

Kalum Lake, located 25km north of Terrace, is a great location to go canoeing, fishing, or camping with your family. The campground runs on a first come, first serve basis and does not accept reservations.
SKEENA RIVER WEST
Uncovering Terrace’s Roots
In the spring of 1905, George Little left the hustle and bustle of the Yukon Gold Rush and snowshoed over the Kitimat Trail to the shores of the Skeena River. As he gazed over the magical vista he envisioned a life of opportunity. When the government opened the land for sale George staked his claim on acres including the site, which Terrace stands today. He established a homestead and sawmill in response to the needs of the new railway and donated nine acres of land so a new railway station could be built, transforming Terrace into a busy commercial hub. George married Clara Beste in 1912 and together they raised a family of five children. Nearly one year before his death in 1955, George rode the first Canadian National Railway train to make the Terrace – Kitimat run over the route he first snowshoed nearly half a century earlier. Several years ago, the City of Terrace restored George Little’s home to its original state and moved its location to the bottom of Kalum Street. The building that was once home to our city’s founder, now welcomes train passengers as the VIA Rail Station. Here you’ll also find local handicrafts, cultural artifacts, and antiques. On Sundays in the summer be sure to peruse the Flea Market full of eclectic finds and hidden treasures.
The Kwinitsa Foreman’s Residence and Grand Trunk Pathway
At the heart of the community is Terrace’s landmark park, preserved in the memory of the town’s founder, George Little. This central gathering place celebrates its 100th year in 2011. With lots of room to move and play, you can throw a Frisbee or take a workout at the Green Gym, the outdoor fitness training centre, while the kids test their skills on the miniature skate park and have fun in the playground. Centered around amazing mountain ranges form a majestic backdrop make it the perfect spot for everything from small family picnics to large community gatherings. centering around the newly constructed Spirit Square and outdoor stage. George Little Park is also the site of the Public Library, Art Gallery, as well as, the Farmer’s Market, which takes place on Saturdays from May to October.
Explore the only residential building of the Canadian National Railway known to survive the area. The Kwinitsa Foreman’s Residence was home to a succession of foremen who worked at the Kwinitsa station (71.5 km west of Terrace) and supported the rail line between Terrace and Prince Rupert. In summertime indulge in a cool treat while enjoying the mountain vista from the adjoining patio.

You can also take a stroll along The Grand Trunk Pathway, taken from the name of the first railroad to forge across the north. Ideal for walking, jogging, cycling or rollerblading, this 1.6 km paved walkway runs parallel to Hwy 16 and features a series of interpretive signs that provide interesting details on historical events and monuments. Locals call it ‘The Millennium Trail’ as it officially opened in 2000.
Rosswood Drive north on Hwy #113 for 43km’s Discover the charm of Rosswood, a 45 minute drive North along the Nisga’a Hwy 113. This neat little community is famous for the crystal clear mountain spring water flowing from their ‘Peeing Tree’, which is said to have healing qualities to it. The area is home to hundreds of bald eagles, spawning Salmon, swans and beautiful mountain vistas. Who knows you might even catch a glimpse of a sneaky fox, wolves, moose, a grizzly bear or even an elusive Kermodei bear. Kalum Lake is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the area and his home to great fishing and hosts a new boat launch. Kitsumkalum Provincial Park is located at the south end of the lake and is considered a user maintained campground and has no overnight fees. Stop by the General Store for a coffee and snack, as well as, visit or stay at the Community Campground where you may find the Archery Club in action.

An elaborate wreath woven from the hair of Terrace’s founding family, an enormous bear skin, and the community’s first fire truck: the strangely ordinary lives of early settlers in the Terrace area are on display in the eight authentic log cabins at Heritage Park Museum. Tour exhibits on mining, forestry, farming, trapping, homesteading, and transportation. Trace the ecological history of the area in the organic heritage garden, watch a demonstration in the blacksmith’s shop during special events, or simply have a picnic lunch in the parklike setting. Admission by donation.

Access the old bridge via Lakesle Ave
East of Terrace along Hwy 16 stands the Usk Chapel, a charming little replica of a church that was destroyed in the great 1936 flood. While you’re there be sure to take a ride on the Usk Ferry, a rare reaction powered ferry that travels across the Skeena River to the rural community of Usk. Its history dates back to 1912 with the building of the right-of-way for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The Old Bridge is an historical feat of engineering that once boasted the title as the longest, single lane, wood decked, curved bridge in North America. Constructed to allow people and vehicles to easily cross the Skeena River, the rock outcroppings under the bridge became a formidable obstacle for the sternwheelers. As such, ringbolts were anchored in the rocks to help the riverboats navigate their way safely through the canyon on their journey
upstream. These ringbolts are still visible in the rocks at the west end of the bridge.
The Kitsumgallum Cemetery Here rests many of our pioneer ancestors including George Little and his family. The Kitsumgallum Cemetery is located at the top of the first hill on Kalum Lake Drive. Next to the cemetery you’ll find an original trail that looks out across the valley.

The Northwest is home to a rich history of First Nations culture that dates back to “time immemorial”. Many opportunities exist to uncover authentic First Nations experiences that are based on the traditional lifestyle. Visit the Tsimshian communities closest to Terrace – the Kitselas and Kitsumkalum. Take a day trip to visit the Haisla in Kitimaat Village or to the Nass Valley where the ancient Lava Beds and four Nisga’a villages are waiting to be discovered.

Local First Nations
Kitsumkalum – The People of the Robin Kitsumkalum is located just west of Terrace. As you cross the Kalum River, its log and wood buildings immediately catch your eye. Several buildings are inspired by traditional longhouses but serve different purposes. The Kitsumkalum are The People of The Robin and like all Tsimshian, the traditional society is matrilineal, which means they are organized according to the female side of the family. At Kitsumkalum pop into The House of Sim-Oi-Ghets gift shop and general store that specializes in aboriginal arts and crafts. Adorning the storefront is a striking original west coast design, which depicts the four main crests of Kitsumkalum: Eagle, Killer Whale, Raven and Wolf. The People of the Kitselas Canyon 20 minutes aast of Terrace towards Kitwanga National Historic Site of Canada The town of Kitselas Canyon, is a narrow passage of the Skeena River defined by tumultuous water and jagged cliffs. The canyon is home to the Gitselasu, otherwise known as the Kitselas people. The Kitselas are one of seven Tsimshian First Nations communities in Northwestern B.C. Some remnants and residuum discovered through Archaeological research and excavations at the Kitselas Canyon have been carbon-dated to 5,000+ years, thus confirming occupancy of the Kitselas Canyon area for at least that many years. z The language used in the Kitselas Nation is Tsimshian (symalgyax). The coastal and inland dialects of the language differed only in the use of a few words. There are four main clans. They are:

XX Ganhada (Raven) The original villages in this area have long since been abandoned but in recent years, the Gitselasu have developed the award-winning Kitselas Canyon National Historic Site. Visitors on a guided tour can wander through four thematic longhouse displays, a carving shed, animal display, historical display and more. Free outdoor activities include views of the longhouses, an interpretive nature trail that leads to the canyon,6 totem poles, petroglyphs and a view of historic Ringbolt Island and the mighty Skeena River.

South towards Kitimat is Kitamaat Village - home to the Haisla people. In Tsimshian the word Kitamaat means People of the Snow. For hundreds of years the Haisla have occupied many different areas throughout their territory, but today they are primarily found at the head of the Douglas Channel on BC’s North Coast.

Gitlakdamix (New Aiyansh) The community of Gitlaxt’aamix is considered by many to be the “eye” of the Nisga’a Nation since it is the home of Nisga’a Lisims Government. In fact the community itself is a testament to the struggles of the people in securing adequate services in health and education. The Nisga’a Treaty signed in 2000 was one of the first modern day treaties signed in BC. From the Nisga’a perspective a journey that
lasted 113 years. Now the people have a foundation to build an economy and a place to share their stories, culture in a meaningful and respectful way with visitors. While in the community check out the Lisims Government Building where the legislative chamber is shaped like a cone reflecting the volcanic explosion that permanently changed the landscape of the valley, or the foyer of the Gitlaxt’aamix Recreation Center where four totem poles stand to remind the community members

Gingolx (Kincolith) Situated on the mouth of the Nass River at the ocean’s edge, this is the final stop on the Nisga’a Highway. Once a year this tiny village hosts thousands of visitors to celebrate Crabfest, a twoday music festival that honours the community’s abundance of seafood. Entertainment includes Aboriginal and metis performers as well as big name headliners. The friendly folk and fresh seafood feasts make it a summer highlight. Meander along the waterfront boardwalk to experience spectacular views of the ocean and soaring eagles.
Laxgalts’ap (Greenville) The small community of Laxgalts’ap was once a critical fishing spot for oolichan. Surrounded by incredible scenery and staggering mountain vistas, Laxgalts’ap is home to the new Nisga’a Museum - a 10,000 square foot world-class gallery. The floor plan emulates a traditional feast bowl with the soaring roofline resembling a canoe.

Gitwinksihlkw (Canyon City) Perched on the north bank of the Nass River you’ll find Gitwinksihlkw, home of the 400-foot suspension bridge that was once the only access to the village. Be sure to check out the totem poles on the driving bridge, as well as, take a short stroll along the path to marvel at the massive cottonwoods and catch a glimpse of the fish wheels in motion.

Kermodei Bear – A Legendary Mascot
Get Back to Nature
Anyone who has set sight upon the revered white Kermodei bear is one lucky soul. The Kermodei, also known as the Spirit bear, ghost bear or Moksgm’ol in Tsimshian, is unique to the North Coast rainforest and sightings are rare. Even locals who have lived in the region their entire lives have yet to catch a glimpse of Terrace’s legendary mascot.
First Nations legends recall the Kermodei as the spirit of the rainforest. Long ago a raven changed the earth from snowy white to forest green but didn’t want to forget the past. So the raven changed every tenth black bear into a white one to remember the world the way it had once been.

What makes this white bear so intriguing is that it is a black bear in every respect except for its bright coat of fur. One might think that the bears are albinos but the famous white fur comes from a recessive gene that both parents must possess for their cub to be white.
TIP: As the city’s official mascot you will find statues of the animal, all uniquely painted by local artists on display throughout the downtown and along the Grand Trunk Pathway. You can also spot a white bear while driving towards downtown on the Old Skeena Bridge. Hint: Just look up.

The North Coast Rainforest The lush habitat of the North Coast Rainforest is one of the most spectacular ecologically diverse regions in the world. Its proximity to the ocean and mountains provide an abundance of precipitation giving life to the plants and animals. Tree species vary in composition but are all predominantly coniferous with an understory of broadleaved trees and shrubs. The Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock and Red Cedar are the most common. An interesting feature to note is the Nurse Log - a fallen tree that as it decays provide ecological facilitation to seedlings. About 100 species of vertebrates depend on the ancient rainforest for survival. The most common large mammals are the black-tailed deer, black bear, grizzly bear, gray wolf and mountain goat. In the autumn, the forest floor sprouts a wide variety of wild mushrooms including golden chanterelles, king boletes, morels, lobsters, oysters, pines and many more. Whether for personal use or for profit, mushroom picking is a very popular pastime.
TIP: Biomass is the total weight of every living thing in the forest. BC’s rainforests have more biomass than any other forest on earth including tropical rainforests. Visit Lakelse Lake Provincial Park and Gruchy’s Beach to wander through an old growth forest and view the spawning salmon.

And if you are interested in the healing power of plants, local First Nations prize devil’s club as one of the most medically and spiritually important plants of the region. The most common traditional uses are to treat infections including tuberculosis and to treat acute and chronic disorders including rheumatism, arthritis and gastrointestinal complaints.

It’s a wild, wild world and when spring arrives it’s common to see black bears while driving along the highway and hiking the trails. While seeing a bear is often a highlight, proper visitor behavior in bear country is necessary.
XX Don’t surprise or approach bears. Bears will usually move out of the way if they hear people approaching, so make noise and hike in groups. XX Roadside bears. It’s exciting to see bears up close but we must act responsibly to keep them wild and healthy. If you see a bear along the road, please give them lots of space. Roadside bears quickly become habituated to vehicles and people increasing their chances of being hit by motor vehicles. Other wildlife that you may encounter include grizzly bears, moose, deer, coyotes, wolves, cougars, beavers, mountain goats and more. Bald eagles can be spotted most anywhere but particularly along the rivers and lakes. There are also over 100 unique bird species including Canada Geese, Osprey and the Trumpeter Swan, a provincially blue-listed species. In late summer, salmon spawning turns many clear streams shades of pink such as Clearwater Creek. And since the Skeena River leads to the Pacific Ocean you may spot seals and otters in the river hunting for fish.

The fishing opportunities are diverse and last throughout the year depending on the species and watershed. Steelhead fishing is prime in the early spring and late fall while the summer offers a chance to catch all five species of Pacific salmon – King, Sockeye, Coho, Pink and Chum. Trophysized trout such as Rainbow, Kokanee, Lake, Dolly Varden, Mountain Whitefish, Lake Whitefish and Burbot can also be found in the lakes year round.

TIP: Camp, park your RV, hike the trails and fish from the banks of the Skeena right within the city limits on Ferry Island.
Leisurely Walks XX Ferry Island is a flat 2.8 km loop that skirts the banks of the Skeena. Be on the lookout for unique woodcarvings by local artist Rick Goyette hidden amongst the trees. XX The Grand Trunk Pathway is a popular place for walking, jogging, cycling or rollerblading. This paved linear trail follows Hwy16 West for 1.6 km. XX Howe Creek Trail is a picturesque old timber trail along Terrace’s main creek. This easy path is home to birds and amphibians, as well as a fish hatchery at the end of Eby Street. XX Redsand Lake Demonstration Forest is 26 kms north on the West Kalum Forestry Road. The bumpy drive is well worth it as there are some great trails to explore. Check out a 2 km trail that leads to Lookout Hill with scenic views of the lake and Kalum valley. There’s also a 1.6 km self-guided trail with interpretive signs, as well as, a moderate 3.8 km hike.

Intermediate Hikes XX Terrace Mountain is a moderate 4.5 km vertical climb with some steep spots and rewarding views overlooking Terrace. XX Thornhill Mountain is a moderate hike that follows an old mining trail for 4.8 km to the alpine and the old forestry lookout. Here you’ll find sensational panoramic views of the Skeena and Kitimat Valleys. XX Bornite Mountain is a 4.6 km hike following an old mining trail to a sub-alpine ridge. An unmarked route continues to the peak giving panoramic views of the Skeena Valley and surrounding areas. XX Hai Lake is a moderate to easy 1 km hike through old growth forests that leads to Hai Lake and a rustic campsite. Great for swimming and fishing. XX Packhorse/Lickbike has two multi-use trails that are part of the original Thornhill Mountain trail and are primarily used by mountain bikes. XX Pine Lakes is a moderate 6.1 km multi-use loop. The trail offers scenic views of the lakes, wetlands and mountains. XX Sleeping Beauty is a 2.5 km hike that leads to sub-alpine meadows and lakes. An unmarked route continues to alpine ridges with excellent views of the Kalum and Skeena Valleys.

Enjoy the beautiful “Drive” in the North
Biking in Terrace Biking in Terrace is absolutely fantastic. Whether you ride Road, BMX, Trail or Freeride/DH, we have it all. If you are an intermediate/expert XC trail rider. You will love our 7.9 km Flathead Trail. The trailhead is two minutes from downtown and you will ride all the way around Terrace mountain top to bottom. This 5 year old trail will soon hook up to the new Steinhoe Ridge trail system being developed that is also ridable in Demo form. You can easily ride for three hours right from downtown and experience one of the best emerging trail networks in BC. There are several beginner to Intermediate XC trails in the area to choose from such as Spring Creek, Pine Lake and Red Sand and the “in town” Howe Creek Trail and Ferry Island. Our Downhill and Freeride area at Copper Mountain features trails for those who want gravity to do the work. The terrain resembles the famous Northshore trails in Vancouver. We can even accommodate XC trail riders who want a little gravity experience on Packhorse. Full on Downhillers will like Lucky7 and the steep and tight Freeriders will find on numerous trails to explore. This is a shuttle friendly area and riders should have appropriate protection and bikes.

If you have a Dirtjumper or BMXer in the family, they will be very comfortable in Terrace. We have a local skate park where Borders and BMXers share space and half pipes, as well as community terrain at the George Little Park and beyond. We are a welcoming and open community for young riders exploring the sport. For the Youngest riders we have the Terrace Bike Park with stunts, jumps and drops as well as a wall ride and pump track. All located centrally just south of tour Health Centre. This area is a great place for riders to earn their stripes before venturing into the other numerous local ride areas.

With some of the largest snowfalls in the world, the Terrace area is home to top-class runoff. That means a great river running season April to November. At least 30 raft, canoe and kayak runs are within the immediate Terrace area including some of the best whitewater in the world. Be sure to check out Copper River and Williams Creek. On a hot summer day, visitors craving a dip can cool off in a variety of refreshing lakes within minutes from downtown. The expansive Lakelse Lake has a few popular picnic areas and beaches south of town while smaller lakes, such as Findley Lake or Loss Lake just north of town offers a more intimate environment. If your style is a bit more rustic and private, take the short trek to Red Sand lake or Kitsumkalum Provincial Park on Kalum Lake. Running 5th Annual SalmonRun event in Kitsumkalum June 23rd, 2013, marks the date for the 5th Annual SalmonRun starting at Kitsumkalum Hall. Registration is online at: www.salmonrunwild.ca and the race begins at10am. There will be a 2km Elders & Buggy route as well as 5km or 10km routes too. There will be over 600 people participate this year, as it is growing every year. There will be over 100 medals and trophies to present based on official times from the time keeping team. They have over 100 volunteers involved in this event and it is growing in popularity every year.

Archery, an ancient and noble sport is rapidly growing in the Northwest. The local archery club is inclusive to all archery disciplines practices by all ages with all equipment except crossbows. The Terrace Annual 3-D competition has become a premiere event in the region with a 35 target course shot over 3 rounds in 2 days. For more information visit www.twjarchers.co.za
Terrace Whiskey-Jack Archers The TWJA club was created in 2004 by local archery enthusiasts. From humble beginnings the club and sport evolved to a multicenter entity with both an indoor and outdoor season. The club consists of approximately 50 members of all ages (676) and walks of life. Construction of an outdoor facility on 30 sub-leased acres in Thornhill commenced in 2010 with a grand opening scheduled in the spring of 2013. The outdoor facility includes a 142 feet shelter with kitchen overlooking a 150 x 140 feet outdoor range. 2.5 kms of trails complete the 3-D facility.
The highlight of the archery calendar is the Annual TWJA 3-D Competition in Rosswood outside Terrace. 150 archers and their families attend from all over northern BC for a 2 day 105 target event. The indoor season stretches from November to the end of April and is conducted in the Thornhill Junior Secondary School Gymnasium on Highway 16. Club members shoot at 3-D animals and bag targets through the depths of winter. Indoor 3-D competitions complete the season in January/February. Coaching and training events are available for newcomers. Equipment is available on site. Memberships are available at the club and at archery retailers in Terrace.

Motorized Adventure It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. Hop on a motorcycle, quad or dirtbike to hit the winding highways or trails for motorized vehicles. For a short scenic adventure, hit the Nisga’a Highway and within an hour you’ll be driving through the youngest lava flow in Canada. For off-road adventure, The Terrace Motorcross Association recently opened a two-track facility featuring an outdoor style motocross track and a novice/kids track near the Terrace Airport on Hwy 37 South. Four-wheeling can lead you to prime fishing spots or mountain top views. Check out Onion Lake, the Exstew River or the road to the summit of Thornhill Mountain. For all you motor heads come and get loud at the Terrace Drag Races or watch some racing action at the Terrace Speedway.

Terrace has the natural gift that many other communities would love to have. Our region is blessed with pristine granite towering walls. Terrace is a rock climber’s natural paradise. Copper Mountain consists of several 5 – 6 length pitches as well as single natural and sport routes. Some of the more challenging longer routes have distinct mix sport and traditional climbing with names such as Rendezvous and Renaissance. Visit the Dihedrals and climb Power Tower, Blade Runner, Sanctuary or Zeus – the king of crack climbing. Outstanding climbing that will attract climbers from far and wide. The area also hosts several smaller crags such as Kitselas, Onion Lake, Kalum, and the Traxx. Other longer walls include Extew and Kermode Wall – both are about a 45 min. drive west of Terrace. If you love rock climbing Terrace is the place to be by far in the Northwest Region of BC. Our climbing season can stretch from March – Oct. with guiding and instructional services available in the region.

Minerals North is an annual meeting between northern B.C.’s communities, the mining and exploration industry, First Nations and the service and supply companies that support development. Gitanyow - Make sure to visit Gitanyow (Kitwancool), located 15 km north of Kitwanga along Hwy 37 North. Here lie some of the oldest-known and largest collection of totem poles in B.C. Some of these poles were painted by Emily Carr in 1928. The area features a small museum as well.

Stewart and Hyder, Alaska - The drive on Hwy37 North is very scenic with towering mountains, the Salmon Glacier and tons of wildlife. Known as Canada’s northernmost ice-free port, Stewart is on the United States border, just minutes away from Hyder, Alaska. It is one of the only places in the world where you can see glaciers up close. A popular activity is visiting the only bar in Hyder (don’t worry you can’t miss it) and getting Hyderized - one strong shot of liquor. You can also visit Fish Creek to watch grizzly bears from a viewing platform feast on salmon. Stewart-Cassiar Hwy 37 North to Dease Lake At the Meziadin Junction continue driving north to Dease Lake. En route access two of Canada’s largest parks, the Spatsizi Wilderness Park and Mount Edziza Park. Drive the road to Telegraph Creek, an extraordinary winding road through river canyons and lava flows and visit Tahltan communities.

Just east of Smithers is Telkwa, nestled on the banks of the Bulkley and Telkwa Rivers, the charming historical village borders Tyhee Lake Provincial Park.
