ALEKSANDR

CONSTRUCTIVISM “Constructivism was an artistic and architectural philosophy that originated in Russia beginning in 1919, which was a rejection of the idea of autonomous art. The movement was in favour of art as a practice for social purposes. Constructivism had a great effect on modern art movements of the 20th century, influencing major trends such as Bauhaus and the De Stijl movement. Its influence was pervasive, with major impacts upon architecture, graphic and industrial design, theatre, film, dance, fashion and to some extent music.

RODCHENKO

--Google (2)

“Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (5 December 1891 – December 3, 1956) was a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. He was one of the founders of constructivism and Russian design.” --Wikipedia (2)

“Rodchenko was one of the most versatile Constructivist and Productivist artists to emerge after the Russian Revolution. He worked as a painter and graphic designer before turning to photomontage and photography. His photography was socially engaged, formally innovative, and opposed to a painterly aesthetic. Concerned with the need for analytical-documentary photo series, he often shot his subjects from odd angles—usually high above or below—to shock the viewer and to postpone recognition.” --Wikipedia (3)

Rodchenko has simple design, which often times can be more powerful than complicated stuff. He likes to give each geometric shape it’s own space, by giving them borders. --Me

I was offended when Westminster said my painting was an advertisement. Advertising makes people feel inadequate and worthless. Graffiti doesn't do that. Graffiti doesn't emotionally blackmail you, doesn't make you feel fat and graffiti doesn't make you rush out and buy things, except maybe high strength cleaning products."

Brody

Born

on April 23, 1957 in Southgate, London, Neville Brody attended Hornesey College of Art and The London College of Printing, where he earned a B.A. in graphics. After graduating from college, Brody initially worked in record cover design. Brody then switched to being the Art Director for The Face magazine. Brody gave a whole new face to British media. He pushed the boundaries of visual expression in all of his work, which was both experimental and challenging. In 1988, Thames & Hudson published two volumes about his work. This became the world’s best selling graphic design book. Brody continues to work as a graphic designerm, and in 1994, he launched his own design practice called Research Studios, which is located in London. Brody has since opened up studios in San Francisco, Paris, and New York. Recently Brody and his team designed the new look for the champagne brand Dom Pérignon. He also redesigned the BBC News and The Times, which he created the font “Times Modern” for. Brody was one of the founding fathers of “FontWorks”, and deigned 24 fonts throughout his career. Brody continues to design and often gives lectures at many locations around the world.

ABOUT NEVILLE BRODY

“An electrician isn’t an opinion former, but a graphic designer is. My argument is that all graphic designers hold high levels of responsibility in society. We take invisible ideas and make them tangible. That’s our job.”
