This instinctive use of various pictorial elements produces scenes which are sometimes idyllic and, at other times, violent or even paranoid, that continually show the artist´s special relationship with landscape and landscape painting. This natural reference appears represented in a series of ‘impressions’, in phrases or personal notes that the author dedicates to the landscape that is beside him, and that he interprets through his intuitive encounters with his working materials. Felipe Hodgson says, however, that his paintings are ‘open windows’ for viewers to make their own interpretations and find in them, guided by his personal experience, the landscapes that they recognise and with which they identify.

He often applies paint with his fingers, and rips, tears or cuts paper and fabric to achieve what he terms ‘subjective plastic effects.’ It is in this sense that Felipe Hodgson states that ‘abstraction has its own rules’, and that they help him ‘to focus the inner needs of my mind, shaping definitive images. In this process,’ he points out, ‘I often make many attempts, and make mistakes that I correct and that I also deliberately repeat, looking for improvised and spontaneous effects.’

Felipe Hodgson Esta exposición reúne una treintena de pinturas de Felipe Hodgson realizadas, fundamentalmente, entre 2011 y 2014. En ellas el artista experimenta con diversas variaciones pictóricas sobre el paisaje, el tema central de su obra más reciente y el más constante en toda su pintura. En estos cuadros Felipe Hodgson construye una visión personal de la Naturaleza basada en la memoria, bien pintando con óleo o acrílico sobre el lienzo, bien utilizando una técnica mixta que añade, a través de la superposición de capas de papel, tela u otros elementos, textura y volumen a la tabla, interviniendo de manera obsesiva en los soportes sobre los que trabaja. ‘Tengo inspiraciones duraderas –sostiene el autor– y no puedo crear de la nada, sino a partir de lo reunido en el material de mi experiencia y de las cosas vistas, pero soy un pintor de acción y supongo que, al final, la sensación que quiero obtener es la de no saber cuál ha sido el último trazo, porque he tratado la superficie a fondo’. El color a menudo satura la superficie de los cuadros de Felipe Hodgson, pero en otros momentos la elude, dando lugar, en ambos casos, a formas pictóricas instintivas. El artista gusta de esparcir el color sobre la tela a la manera del expresionismo gestual, en una acción que nace tanto del azar como de la intuición cromática. Muchas veces aplica la pintura con los dedos y rompe o rasga o corta el papel y la tela para conseguir lo que él denomina ‘efectos plásticos subjetivos’. Es, en este sentido, en el que Felipe Hodgson manifiesta que ‘la abstracción posee sus propias reglas’, y que éstas le ayudan ‘a enfocar las necesidades interiores de mi mente, dando forma a imágenes definitivas. En este proceso –subraya– a menudo hago muchos ensayos y cometo errores, que rectifico y que también repito deliberadamente, en busca de efectos improvisados y espontáneos’.

Este uso instintivo de distintos elementos pictóricos produce escenarios unas veces idílicos y otras violentos, y hasta paranoicos que, continuamente, muestran la relación particular del autor con el paisaje y con la pintura de paisajes. De este modo, el referente natural aparece representado en una serie de ‘impresiones’, de apuntes o de notas personales que el autor dedica al paisaje que le es próximo y que interpreta en sus encuentros intuitivos con los materiales de trabajo. Felipe Hodgson afirma, sin embargo, que sus pinturas son ‘ventanas abiertas’ para que el espectador realice sus propias interpretaciones y encuentre en ellas, guiado por su experiencia personal, los paisajes que reconoce y con los que se identifica. This exhibition brings together some thirty paintings by Felipe Hodgson, mainly from the period between 2011 and 2014. In these paintings, the artist experiments with various pictorial variations of landscape, the theme central to his latest work, and most persistent throughout his painting life. In these pictures, Felipe Hodgson constructs a personal vision of Nature based on memory, either painting with oil or acrylic on canvas, using a mixed technique that adds texture and volume, through the overlapping of layers of paper, fabric and other materials, and speaking obsessively to the media about his works. ‘I have firm inspirations’ says the artist, ‘and I cannot create from nothing, only from the material I have gathered through my experiences and from the things that I have seen, but I am an action painter and I guess that in the end, the feeling I want to get is not to know which was the last stroke, because I have worked the surface so thoroughly.’ Colour often saturates the surface of paintings by Felipe Hodgson, but at other times it eludes them, resulting, in both cases, in instinctive pictorial forms.
