What are the main concerns of business travellers when they are on the move? An independent study commissioned by CWT and conducted by Artemis Strategy Group reveals that the two biggest concerns of frequent business travellers around the world are the impact on their family life and the pressure on their colleagues. With regard to their private lives, 22% believe that their business travel commitments impact the quality of their relationships and family life. While 21% are concerned that their families think they are focusing on business travel rather than their daily and personal responsibilities. On the professional side, 22% feel guilty that their colleagues have to deal with their workload when they are away, 21% are stressed about spending too much time with their colleagues or clients, and 14% are concerned about the difficulty of staying in touch with their colleagues in their home office. Considering regional differences, Americans are generally more concerned than their counterparts in Europe and Asia-Pacific. 26% believe that their personal and family relationships are affected, compared to 23% of Europeans (including 22% of the French), and 18% of Asia-Pacific travellers. 23% say that spending too much time with colleagues or customers on the move can be stressful, as can Europeans and 19% of Asia-Pacific travellers.

The French are slightly more concerned about this subject (26%). 22% of American travellers are concerned that their families feel that they put their work ahead of their personal daily responsibilities, compared to 17% of Europeans (France 16%) and 23% of AsiaPacific travellers. That said, Americans are less concerned about the difficulty of staying in touch with colleagues in their home offices (13% versus 14% of Europeans and Asia-Pacific travellers - including 17% for France) and the workload of their colleagues (16% versus 25% of Asia-Pacific travellers and 24% of European travellers). French travellers are below the European average (19%). "Although the same study shows that business travellers believe that the positive aspects outweigh the negative aspects at work (92%) and at home (82%) when they are on the move, companies need to be aware of business travellers' concerns and help them address them head on, says Catherine MaguireVielle, EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer at CWT. Interpersonal relationships are a fundamental element of well-being and companies have an obligation to ensure that their employees' travel is not a concern at home or in the office." Source: CWT

MICE: WHAT ABOUT WELCOMING FOREIGN CUSTOMERS IN FRANCE? With Olivier Chanelle, Deputy Director of Toulouse Événements — Edmund Hazlewood, Director of the Nantes Saint-Nazaire Convention Bureau — Pascale Bigo, Head of the Aix Marseille Provence Metropolitan Convention Bureau — Shraddha Maussion, Head of the Convention Bureau - Tours Val de Loire Tourisme — Silvia Ferrari, Deputy Director of the Toulouse Métropole Attractiveness Agency in charge of Invest, Convention Bureau et Tournages — Sandrine Quinio, Secretary General, Director of Events hosted by Destination Angers. By Dominique Pourrias

Pascale Bigo (Aix Marseille Provence): International development is one of our major strategic axes. Marseille is the third French city to host international congresses according to the ICCA world ranking of congress cities. And of the PASCALE BIGO 815 demonstrations hosted AIX MARSEILLE PROVENCE in our city in 2018, 30% were international. 70% of our promotion budget is concentrated on international markets: Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Canada, United States, Italy and Russia. © DR

For your business, what do foreign customers represent? © DR

Olivier Chanelle (Toulouse Événements): In 2018, 50% of our congresses have an international audience. This percentage will increase in the future with the arrival of MEETT, the new Parc des Expositions et Centre de Conventions de Toulouse. MEETT and its 95,000 m2 of OLIVIER CHANELLE additional space will be quickly accessible from ToulouseTOULOUSE ÉVÉNEMENTS Blagnac International Airport, particularly by public transport (bus and tram) and close to the city centre. The site has many advantages to facilitate the hosting of congresses, trade fairs and conventions, which will be additional assets to attract international customers: 7 halls (40,000 m2 modular), 15,000 m2 of convention centre and 5,000 parking spaces. Currently, most of our international customers are European, but the arrival of MEETT will allow us to expand our borders.

Shraddha Maussion (Tours Val de Loire): In 2019, we responded to some thirty requests from abroad (England, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Lithuania, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Brazil, Vietnam, Switzerland and Romania...). © DR

Silvia Ferrari (Toulouse Métropole): According to the MKG study, out of 2018, nearly 30% of the hotel occupancy rate was represented by foreign customers. On the business market, out of a total of more than 500 projects monitored by the Convention SILVIA FERRARI Bureau in 2018, 20% were TOULOUSE MÉTROPOLE international in the corporate segment and 70% in the congress market (48th European city in the ICCA 2018 ranking). The nationalities of the project leaders are mainly European with a strong representation of the neighboring countries, Germany and Italy, which are growing rapidly.

© DR

Edmund Hazlewood (Nantes Saint-Nazaire): Foreign customers are very important in our long-term strategy at the Convention Bureau in Nantes Saint-Nazaire. We are implementing a 2020 action plan that is resolutely international in scope. In particular, we wish EDMUND HAZLEWOOD to attract associative and corNANTES SAINT-NAZAIRE porate events with an international rotation in line with our fields of excellence as well as our specialities in the medical world. Our destination has excellent connections with the rest of the world through our international airport and rail links to the capital. Nantes Atlantique offers more than 100 direct flights from Nantes and 23 round trips per day between Nantes and Paris.

• Novembre 2019 - n°38

Sandrine Quinio (Angers): It depends a lot on the events. Of the last ones we hosted, the international GreenSys symposium with, for example, participants from Europe (31%), Asia (12%), Africa/Middle East (9%), North America (9%).

Shraddha Maussion (Tours Val de Loire): The Congress Bureau can assist them in managing their transport and facilitate their travel to Tours (plane/ train/bus). We offer them accommodation management (options taken from our hosting SHRADDHA MAUSSION partners, reservations, rooming list management), but also TOURS VAL DE LOIRE the booking of activities, catering and other more specific requests (congress gifts, congress passes...). Our DMC (incoming agency) service, which welcomes more than 600 groups per year from France and abroad, also designs tailor-made programmes to introduce visitors to the destination (conference guides in more than 7 languages, visits to the Loire castles, etc.) and facilitates delegates' stays in Tours Loire Valley. The objective is to meet their needs and facilitate their visit by offering them turnkey or tailor-made services.

What specific services do you provide to facilitate their visit?

Silvia Ferrari (Toulouse Métropole): In order to best welcome the project leaders of professional events, and to facilitate their territory, the CVB teams offer personalized support for each event. On the other hand, the Convention Bureau facilitates Toulouse for them by providing them with the welcome pack, including a range of services such as the provision of marketing material, image bank, direct link with the socio-professionals of the territory, access to special rates on soft mobility in the metropolis...

Olivier Chanelle (Toulouse Événements): In view of this internationalization, it should be noted that the MEETT and the reception facilities of Toulouse meet international standards in terms of business tourism. This is evidenced by ToulouseBlagnac International Airport and its accessibility, but also by the hotel park of the Toulouse metropolis and its capacity, which are part of this desire to turn to the international market. More particularly, the example of catering, a service that can be adapted to all types of cultures and desires, proves the international dimension of our businesses. This is how, at Toulouse Événements, we set up tools and services for our international clients. In addition, our communication over the past year has been increasingly focused on the international media and all our technical sales staff speak English and are trained. We are also working in collaboration with the Toulouse Metropolitan Attractiveness Agency on improving on-site materials in English and other languages, but also on increasing the means of reception in order to promote the destination and the territory.

© DR

Sandrine Quinio (Angers): We provide them with a central accommodation centre, which lists all the hotel facilities in the destination. Participants are invited to visit a dedicated platform, customized with the event's colors. They then choose their hotel and receive their exchange voucher in return. SANDRINE QUINIO A direct line is at their disposal ANGERS for any questions or difficulties when booking. We also have a partnership with Air France that allows them to obtain advantageous fares on airline tickets. © Yoan Navarro

Edmund Hazlewood (Nantes Saint-Nazaire): The Nantes Convention Bureau has one of the most successful reception charters in France. The destination has set up 24 commitments that guarantee participants a warm and personalized welcome. This charter effectively supports the organisation of events through the implementation of services offered by all players in the event industry. Pascale Bigo (Aix Marseille Provence): The team of the Bureau des Congrès Aix Marseille Provence is multilingual (English, Spanish, Italian and German). We organize personalized services for our foreign clients. We have a bilingual website and conference guide and multilingual tools (maps, guides...). We organize education courses and sight-seeing visits in several languages. We facilitate the organization of our foreign clients' events by our knowledge of the city and by bringing together business tourism stakeholders around the project.

The Icca 2018 ranking has crowned Paris the world's leading destination for hosting international congresses.

At the Moulin Rouge, the main hall (900 seats), the Toulouse-Lautrec reception lounge (50 people), the imperial VIP balcony (30 people) or the mezzanine (20 people) allow events to be personalized.

Paris, world leader in congresses in 2018

Paris once again became the world's congress capital last year. First in the Icca (International Congress and Convention Association) ranking in 2016, and second in 2017, it has regained its position as world leader, hosting 212 congresses in 2018, 40 events more than its challenger, Vienna, followed by Madrid (165 congresses), Barcelona (163) and Berlin (162).

The cabaret: a typically Parisian universe

Associated with the image of the capital in the collective imagination, the cabaret remains a popular choice for corporate events with its festive and colourful universe. Its popular, entertaining and timeless look, its traditional show evenings offer a relaxing moment to your employees. Emblematic venues such as the Lido, Crazy Horse, Paradis Latin, Moulin Rouge or Brasil Tropical welcome corporate groups for conferences, seminars, fashion shows, product launches... and offer several event packages (lunch show, dinner show, VIP evening...).

Paris Convention Center: 35,000 people simultaneously!

Started in 2015, the work at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles is ongoing and phase 2 of the project initiated by Viparis, the manager of the large Porte de Versailles site, will be completed in 2020. After the renovation of Pavilions 1 and 4 and Pavilion 7, where Paris Convention Center (the largest convention centre in Europe) is located, the new Pavilion 6, a fusion of Pavilions 6 and 8, will be covered with a structure designed by the famous architect Jean Nouvel, from which will be suspended a multitude of light messages related to current and future events. It will have 250 m² of meeting rooms, more than 15,000 m² of exhibition space, and on its roof a 14,000 m² urban farm with an event greenhouse and will offer a wide choice of activities, including educational tours, team building workshops... The future Paris Exhibition Centre is intended to be both a business centre and a living space. Many infrastructures, such as accommodation, restaurants, green spaces for relaxation or a sports complex will be built. Paris Expo Porte de Versailles will be fully operational in 2025, after ten years of transformation. In all, 216,000 m² of exhibition space will be available to host the largest trade fairs, congresses and conventions.

The restaurant can accommodate up to 400 people in a cocktail format.

Hard Rock Cafe... on the Grands Boulevards

In France, Hard Rock Cafe has three establishments: Nice, Paris and Lyon (the latter under franchise). Hard Rock Cafe Paris opened in the Opéra district on the Grands Boulevard 28 years ago! The restaurant can accommodate up to 400 people in a cocktail format in all its spaces: main floor, mezzanine, VIP Hendrix. Many players have opened up to the professional events market and are privatising their spaces such as the Maison Yachts de Paris, Bateaux Parisiens, Bateaux de Paris, Bateaux Maxim's, Compagnie des Bateaux à Roue, Compagnie des Bateaux Mouches and many others.

Because an event is frequently accompanied by an incentive activity, Parisian service providers compete with each other for original proposals. Open Tour Paris, Hop On Hop Off bus service, offers to privatize its vehicles and dress them in the company's colours for a tailor-made tour or a cocktail dinner with entertainment. Performances Net is now bringing the 2024 Olympic Games to life (from 40 to more than 150 participants). Byke&Co organizes team building for up to 30 people on board giant bicycles with ten crankset and four passenger seats to attack the capital in a sporty and ecological way. Paris Authentic, Paris Off-Piste, Promenade des Sens, Marcopolette (electric tuk-tuk rallies) or Retro Tour (visits to Paris on board authentic sidecars) also allow groups to experience new moments that will strengthen ties.

EXPERT WORDS How is Viparis positioned?

© Viparis

Pablo Nakhlé Cerruti: We are the largest event operator in Europe, with approximately 600,000 m² of space, including Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, Paris-Le Bourget, Paris-Nord Villepinte, Espace Champerret, Palais des Congrès de Paris, Palais des Congrès d'Issy, Salles du Carrousel, Espace Grande Arche and Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild. Every year, we host some 800 events and around 9 or 10 million visitors, depending on whether or not it is the year of the Mondial de l'Auto.

Paris has once again become the world's leading destination for congresses, according to the ICCA...

MANAGING DIRECTOR OF VIPARIS

The quality of the welcome is one of your obsessions....

Pablo Nakhlé Cerruti: Its attractiveness is very strong. Organizing an event in the French capital allows you to have between 20% and 25% more participants than in another city. We benefit from its heritage dimension, its art of living, and recently from its innovative dimension. The opening two years ago of the Paris Convention Centre, the largest in Europe, at Paris Expo, contributed to its return to the top of the ICCA 2018 ranking. The Porte de Versailles site is very flexible. And the new equipment has enabled us to host more events, including the European Congress of Cardiology (35,000 delegates) this summer.

Pablo Nakhlé Cerruti: In this respect, we want to offer a seamless course. We invest a lot in services and Guest Attitude. This is also one of the reasons why we launched French Event Booster. This 10,000 m² platform at Paris Expo is an accelerator for innovation projects in the event industry. It is both an incubator for start-ups that are rethinking the visitor experience, and we believe that some of them are future gems such as Odiho and Linguali, as well as a coworking area and the accommodation of the training school for event professionals.

What are your strong points? Éric Chauvet: With more than 5,000 events organized in 2018, Lieux & Événements Prestige Sodexo has had the know-how and expertise to offer for more than twenty years: a single point of contact, 38 chefs at your disposal, the Lenôtre house as your preferred caterer, technical teams, as well as innovative and secure reception and connection solutions. The brand now deploys its sales representatives, not only according to the location, but also by dedicating them to each customer. Thus, event organisers are supported from the very beginning of their search for venues and have a single and privileged contact person in order to best meet their expectations.

Éric CHAUVET

Your collection has been expanded with three new locations. Are you planning to expand it further?

SALES AND MARKETING DIRECTOR PLACES AND EVENTS PRESTIGE SODEXO

Éric Chauvet: This year, Lieux & Événements Prestige Sodexo expanded its collection with three new addresses located in the capital's key areas, with a new generation of business centers: Rive Montparnasse, Kluster Business Center and Salon Gustave Eiffel. We intend to continue developing the collection by integrating new locations into our portfolio, in particular by expanding our offer outside Paris, such as in Lyon or Marseille, while keeping the objective of marketing only unique places on the market, nuggets.

Present us Sodexo Prestige Places and Events and the positioning of this brand? Éric Chauvet: The Sodexo Prestige Places and Events brand offers companies and event agencies a diversified portfolio of prestigious and unique venues in the heart of Paris adapted to all our clients' needs (business lunches, management committees, events with over 4,000 participants). From the most atypical such as the Lido de Paris, to the most historic such as private mansions, business centres or emblematic restaurants such as the Eiffel Tower restaurants, all our places have in common the fact that they are upscale, with a particular history or a strong personality.

LYON has integrated the Global Destination Sustainability Index in 2019

ADVERTISING

LYON has integrated the GDS in 2019 whose goal is to help destinations to develop effective strategies and practice in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. Questions are built on 4 pillars: • Environment: energy emissions, air quality, waste, transport, territorial climate plan, greenhouse gas emissions. • Social: inequality, accessibility, ethics, corruption perception index, share of public open space for people with special needs. • Suppliers: hotels, restaurants, venues, airport, agencies-PCOs (percentage of ecolabels certified by a third party), Iso 20121. How many hotels are located at less than 12km from the convention centre • DMO/CVB: destination strategy, client support, destination certification, governance & reporting.

Destinations must have an efficient strategy to catalyze social, economic and environmental development of its own touristic industry. The business tourism attracts loads of visitors in a very short time. The GDS was founded in 2016 with 22 cities (most of them are Northern European cities). In 2019 around 50 cities are ranked within the GDS as sustainable destinations. GDS consists in benchmarking different destinations; which must reply to more than 100 questions and to prove the answers with supporting documents.

Lyon got the score of 53% (best French Cities score in the GDS). The aim is to implement a sustainable strategy within meetings and events industry and to observe the progress of Lyon year after year. If Lyon achieved 53%, it is thanks mainly to the daily efforts done by the local suppliers, such as Lyon Convention Centre and Lyon Eurexpo, for instance. Both of them have been certified ISO 20121.

© UMR-NNRS-MAP-ENSA

The Lyon Convention Centre and Eurexpo Lyon, two of the GL events group’s venues in Lyon united under the name the Lyon for events, fully integrate the principles of sustainable development in their activities and have earned ISO 20121 certification. This standard sets the guidelines for responsible management systems applied to event-related activities. The result of a firm commitment taken to promote sustainable development over the past many years, this certification highlights efforts made by the GL events group to limit its ecological impact.

◗  With France's second largest airport 10 minutes away by transport from its ultracentre, Nice has a major advantage on the national and international business meeting scene. In the coming weeks, the airport will benefit from a tramway link from the two terminals to the city centre, which will further enhance the city's ergonomics.

◗  The second largest congress city after Paris, Nice welcomes 2 million business tourists every year. The destination has 10,000 hotel rooms and many facilities adapted to BtoB events. A new convention centre exhibition park should be delivered by 2025 in the Éco-Vallée, to the west of the city, where the Grand Arénas business district and the Meridia technology park are taking shape.

Skiing and dinner on the beach on the same day!

Nice offers this extraordinary opportunity to ski down the ski slopes near Isola 2000 and Auron and enjoy a sunset on the beach in the same day! If Nice is a congress city, it is also a first choice incentive destination. On site or less than an hour from downtown, there are countless unifying activities and agencies compete in creativity to thrill participants. Examples include a tour of the Saleya course market with a chef to learn the secrets of Nice cuisine, a perfume creation workshop, notably with the Oreva France agency, a GPS smartphone treasure hunt to discover Nice's architectural heritage and unusual sites, or a treasure hunt in Vièia Vila, the old Nice and its hinterland offers a unique playground for outdoor activities. town, a vintage car rally along the French Riviera, outdoor "pétanque" activities in the famous Place des Lices, quad, Segway, white water sports... with La Maison by GTS, a gastronomic tour of the city with Innovation Voyages, a via ferrata and canyoning in the Mercantour with vertical Odyssey, Olympiads with Koh-Lanta type events, or even a sunset cruise in the bay, a team building with the Seminup agency which also offers a jazzy evening in the arenas or gardens of Cimiez... In other words, the range of activities is extremely diversified!

The Éco-Vallée, dedicated to eco-technologies, is at the same time an experimental site, an urban technopole and a host site for leading companies.

A metropolis looking to the future

Modern and dynamic, Nice Côte d'Azur is the economic heart of the Alpes-Maritimes, bringing together the energies of a developing region. In addition to the tourism sector, the metropolis, "green city of the Mediterranean", has made sustainable development a major focus of its economic development strategy. Major projects are taking shape, most notably the Eco-Valley, on the outskirts of the airport, which, since 2008, has transformed the western part of the city of Nice. This operation of national interest decided during the Grenelle de l'Environnement changed the face of the Var plain between start-ups, housing, football stadium and tramway. And the work continues with the aim of a multimodal station by 2021 - Nice-Saint Augustin-Airport - and a 200-hectare Nice-Méridia urban technology park, a catalyst for innovation offering a development space for R&D and training in the sectors of green growth, the environment and health.

As a result of its "smart city" development strategy, Nice is now ranked among the world's leading smart cities.

Nice, Smart City

One of the top 15 smart cities in the world, France's fifth largest city is positioned as a "smart and connected city". The metropolis has taken up the challenge of new technologies and new sectors, and is thus pursuing an ambitious policy to improve the lives of residents, optimize urban management and create jobs. The initiatives carried out in the area in Smart City are numerous, and have led the city to strengthen its collaborations with large industrial groups, local SMEs and startups, particularly those linked to the French Tech network, as well as with the world of research and education. This Smart City strategy is mainly applied in four areas: risk management, environment, intelligent mobility and energy.

Nice offers an extremely rich range of venues open to corporate events such as Villa Arson, an artistic research centre that welcomes groups of up to 400 people for any event format. The Acropolis Congress Centre can accommodate 6,000 people just a stone's throw from the historic Nice.

A wide range of event venues

In addition to the forty or so hotels with facilities and event rooms, Nice has many reception areas for various operations, receptions, product launches, cocktails, conferences... Among them: the Mediterranean University Centre, the Château de Valrose - headquarters of the University of Nice Côte d'Azur -, the airport business centre, Allianz Riviera Stadium, the Nikaïa Palace, the National Sports Museum... Other places are also open to privatisation throughout the city, whether it is the Masséna museum, the Saleya course, the Ephrussi de Rothschild villa, the Nice Côte d'Azur observatory, the MAMAC - museum of modern and contemporary art -, the Marc Chagall museum, the Arson villa, the Kérylos villa, the 109 installed on a former industrial wasteland...

First congress city in France after Paris

As the first city to host congresses after Paris, it is partly thanks to its Acropolis congress and exhibition centre that Nice owes this ranking. Located in the heart of the city 15 minutes from the international airport, this infrastructure offers great modularity and real performance. With 4 auditoriums including Apollo with 2,500 seats, 40 meeting rooms from 20 to 800 seats, 9,000 m2 of modular space and a 17,000 m² exhibition hall with an auditorium (262 seats) and 10 commission rooms, the Nice Acropolis complex can be used for a wide range of events: trade fairs, conferences, conventions, product launches, gala evenings, etc.

With 200 hotels (10,000 rooms), Nice Côte d'Azur represents one third of the Côte d'Azur's hotel capacity, all categories combined, and one of the leading hotel parks after Paris. It should be noted that establishments rated from 3 to 5 stars represent 80% of the accommodation capacity and have, for the most part, spaces dedicated to BtoB operations. The intramuros alone has three 5-star hotels (416 rooms), 40 4-star hotels (4,085 rooms) and 66 3-star hotels (3,458 rooms). From now on, from Place Masséna, most of the hotels adapted for delegates are served by the tramway, in a very short time, to Acropolis. The others are only about a 15-minute walk from the Palais des congrès. And the park is in constant evolution. In 2020/2021, openings will follow one another with the Hilton Garden Inn near the Nice-Thiers central station in the development phase, the Sheraton Hotel and the Okko in the Grand Arenas district, the Marriott...

The Grimaldi Forum, the centrepiece of the Monegasque MICE

Specialist in MICE, the Fairmont Monte Carlo is the largest carrier in the Principality with its 596 rooms.

A hotel park with more than 2,000 rooms

By the sea, a few minutes’ walk from high-ranking hotels, the Grimaldi Forum is known worldwide by the profession. It has a surface area of 35,000 m2 for all types of events up to 3,000 people. It is one of the first eco-certified European congress centres. The Princess Grace esplanade, offered on the Mediterranean Sea and its 1,700 m2 precedes the Grimaldi Forum and the Great Glass Roof, a true architectural signature of the building, under which the events are organized in full light. The equipment also has 3 auditoriums with 1,800, 800 and 400 seats, 11 commission rooms that can be divided into 22 separate rooms, 2 large exhibition areas, several foyers and dining areas with views of the sea or gardens. As part of the new eco-neighborhood to be created by 2025 on 6 hectares of land reclaimed from the sea, the Grimaldi Forum will benefit from an extension that will increase its exposure capacity by 50%.

The Principality's hotel stock has grown. It currently has 2,323 rooms, including 497 in the 5-star category, including some very prestigious historical addresses: Hôtel de Paris, Hermitage and Métropole. Of the 4-star range, Monaco has 1,386 rooms, including 596 at the Fairmont Monte Carlo, the largest carrier on the Côte d'Azur. Founded in 1863, the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) dominates the park with its four luxurious and mythical hotels (700 rooms, or nearly a third of the national capacity), but more broadly the MICE activity with its 45 banquet and conference rooms, its 30 restaurants and bars or its 4 casinos, its marine thermal baths (7,000 m²), its discos (including the famous Jimmy'z Monte-Carlo), its 2 theatres at Sporting Monte-Carlo and the Monte-Carlo Golf Club, located 30 minutes from the city.

Initiated by the SBM, One Monte Carlo is surrounded by gardens and partially pedestrian.

One Monte Carlo: a new business tourism centre

The Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, the principality's iconic palace, has completed its metamorphosis after four years of work for an even more luxurious positioning.

The work at the Hôtel de Paris coincided with the One Monte Carlo, a major real estate and urban planning project led by SBM, which was inaugurated with great fanfare. On the Casino Square, the former Winter Sporting has been demolished to make way for a series of luxury boutiques, offices and high-end apartments, as well as 1,500 m² of conference space. At the disposal of companies, a plenary session, a replica of the Salle des Arts of the former Winter Sporting (300 people), a multipurpose room adjoining the Salle des Arts, an auditorium (80 people), 3 sub-commission rooms each divisible, and a foyer of more than 500 m².

The Hôtel de Paris opens a new page

The Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, a Belle Époque style hotel in the heart of Monaco, has completed a spectacular renovation that will have lasted 4 years. The prestigious hotel in the SBM collection now has 207 rooms and suites, 8 meeting and banquet rooms (up to 400 seats) and a classified reception room: the Empire Room, whose gold, frescoes and curtains have been restored. The famous Louis XV restaurant - Alain Ducasse with three stars - is back in its original setting on the Place du Casino side.

A little further from One Monte Carlo, the seaside is also in turmoil. Behind the Grimaldi Forum, the construction of a new 6-hectare eco-neighborhood won from the sea has begun. Completion of the works in 2025. This gigantic project will involve the construction of several housing units (including an 18-storey building designed by Renzo Piano and around ten villas), a green park, a coastal promenade, a marina and 6,000 m², new areas dedicated to the Grimaldi Forum.

In Monaco, "event rhymes with environment"

The destination Monaco is affirming its expertise in the responsible design of business tourism events by launching a new campaign visual with the slogan "Monaco, a country where events go hand in hand with the environment". Choosing Monaco reduces the carbon footprint by an average of 15 to 40% compared to cities such as Barcelona, London or Paris. All tourism professionals are committed to the energy transition, the Principality's objective being to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It is with this in mind that sustainable development has been taken into account at each stage of the construction of the One Monte-Carlo, which respects the strictest environmental requirements, and that the roof of the Grimaldi Forum will be covered this year with 2,400 m² of photovoltaic panels that will produce 8% of its electricity consumption.

And, on the event side, there are plenty of places to visit, between the sumptuous Salle Empire of the iconic Hôtel de Paris, the Salon Belle Époque or the new Salle Eiffel carved into the rock of the neighboring Hermitage, the casino, the opera house, the Sporting MonteCarlo which houses the famous Salle des Étoiles where the Bal de la Rose takes place, the Villa La Vigie, the Oceanographic Museum, the yachts anchored in the port, and the gardens of the Boulingrins, opposite the new One Monte-Carlo.

EXPERT WORDS How is the MICE activity positioned in Monaco and how is it evolving?

Sandrine CAMIA DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF TOURISM AND CONGRESSES OF MONACO (DTC)

Sandrine Camia: Business tourism in Monaco is doing well. The MICE business grew by 10% in 2018, representing 27.5% of rooms sold in the Principality. This is a record market share since the 2009 financial crisis (business tourism accounted for 18% of rooms sold in 2012). Business remains as mixed as ever. Business groups represent more than 36% of rooms sold in winter and reached a record 45% in October 2018. Conversely, they only represent between 6 and 7.5% of rooms sold in summer. These results are in line with the Convention Bureau's strategy of developing business groups as a priority during the low season. In a fragile global context, the Monegasque business tourism market is particularly resilient. Monaco continues to establish itself among its loyal customers and the largest players in the sector, thanks to its location assets and the quality of its constantly renovated infrastructures. We are also benefiting from a change in the perception and attitude of professionals thanks to the Convention Bureau's communication campaigns initiated since 2013, which aimed to promote the destination from a new angle.

What are the growth sectors?

Sandrine Camia: The three most promising sectors for MICE are medical, finance and new information and communication technologies. They accounted for 50% of the MICE business in 2018. The other growth sectors are sport and automobiles, which represent 18% of the market share. The Principality has a long history linked to elite sport, but it also hosts many sports-related congresses and 2018 was marked by major car launches. The Convention Bureau strategy put in place since 2013 is therefore proving to be a winner. It consists in focusing our development on these sectors of activity. We would also like to highlight the loyalty of many organisers to the Principality. Loyal customers now represent 43% of the total number of overnight stays generated by business tourism, an increase of 3 points compared to 2017. There are nearly 30 recurring events, half of which are attended by more than 1,000 participants.

What are the main assets of the destination for the organisers?

Sandrine Camia: Monaco is a 2 km² city-state with an international reputation. It enjoys a magnificent geographical location in the heart of Europe, only 25 km from Nice-Côte d'Azur airport, which connects Monaco to more than 110 destinations by direct flights. If the DNA components of our destination such as the casino and Formula 1 are no longer obstacles, many companies and congress organizers choose Monaco for its safety, dynamism, expertise and innovative spirit. In Monaco, all travel can be done on foot. The principality hosts excellent hotels, with 2,500 rooms and a true tradition of hospitality. We have a modernized and eco-certified conference centre that can accommodate up to 3,000 people. The Principality also offers an excellent price-quality ratio, especially outside periods of high summer traffic.
