The borough is buzzing with activity at the moment… the sun comes out and so do we! Hopefully you’re reading this while enjoying a picnic or a BBQ in the glorious sunshine. If not, don’t fret - there’s plenty to do in the borough, come rain or shine, and in this issue we’ve brought you plenty of ideas; take a look at our ‘summer days out’ feature for inspiration. And when you are out and about don’t forget to send us your summer snaps! We’ve included some of your best ones in our Rochdale in the Frame centre pages.

Hollingworth Lake by John Millington

Rochdale is a beautiful place to live and work, even more so now that the river has been reopened in the heart of the town centre, next to our magnificent Town Hall. The £250 million regeneration project is gathering pace and the town centre has transformed beyond recognition recently. Lots of exciting new shops and restaurants have opened their doors too - we just love Cockadoodlemoo and the Clock Tower Dining Room!

Please continue to support local shops, businesses and restaurants – shopping and dining locally is the best way to make sure Rochdale thrives and becomes the type of town we really want it to be.

The reopening of the River Roch has transformed the town centre

This edition is packed with exclusive interviews, including Rochdale Olympic champion Joanna Rowsell, Coronation Street actress Shannon Flynn and award winning author Lyn Farrell.

Our feature on Littleborough artist Walter Kershaw makes for an interesting read, as does Richard Lyson’s article on 1980’s Rochdale band The Monkey Run. Plus all the usual features are back – news, sport, motoring, dining, recipes, the arts, beauty, what’s on, events and much more.

STYLE EXCLUSIVE

OLYMPIC CHAMPION JOANNA ROWSELL

STYLE MAGAZINE RECENTLY SPOKE TO ROCHDALE’S OLYMPIC CHAMPION JOANNA ROWSELL, AHEAD OF RIO 2016. THE 27-YEAR-OLD CYCLIST, WHO WAS BORN IN SUTTON BUT NOW LIVES IN MIDDLETON, IS BUSY TRAINING FOR THIS SUMMER’S GAMES WHERE SHE HOPES TO DEFEND HER REIGNING TITLE.

Joanna’s greatest successes to date are the gold

2014, the gold medal in the same discipline at the

medals won in the women's team pursuit at the

2012 London Olympics and the individual pursuit at

World Championships in 2008, 2009, 2012 and

the 2014 World Championship.

www.rochdalestyle.com

What have been the most enjoyable moments of your career so far? Winning my first ever World Title in 2008, just 9 months after finishing my A levels at school. Olympic Gold, London 2012 – nothing will ever top this. Winning the Individual Pursuit at both the World Championships and Commonwealth Games in 2014.

How did you first get into cycling? I started cycling aged 16 having been talent spotted at school. In 2004 British Cycling were on the look out for new cycling talent and visited schools up and down the country. I took part in some basic races on the school playing field and after performing well I was invited back for further, more scientific, testing. I was identified as having the raw talent to be a future potential Olympic cyclist based on the power outputs I could produce. As a result of this I joined a local cycling club and within a year I won my first national title and I then went on to join the Junior National Squad in 2006. How is your preparation for Rio going? Rio preparation began back in August 2014, after the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. There was an 18 month qualification period from September 2014 to March 2016, so all the races we competed in during this time were important to ensure we qualified for the Olympic Games.

We had our last race in March this year which was the World Championships where we finished 3rd behind the USA and Canada. However our time from the bronze medal final was actually quicker than the times in the gold medal final, so it is all to play for! Training for the last few months has been going well. I spend most of my time training at the Manchester velodrome, as well as on my Wattbike at home and riding on the roads from my home in Middleton.

What keeps you focused and motivated? I am always motivated by the end goal which is the Rio Olympics, but day to day it is easy to lose motivation, perhaps if I am very tired or if the weather is bad. I think it’s important to remember that it’s only natural to have days like this. I listen to my body and if I am too tired to train then I take a rest day, but most of the time I just remind myself of the end goal I am working towards and that gets me motivated to get on the bike. If that fails I just promise myself a treat of some chocolate if I complete a hard session!!

What challenges have you faced along the way? The biggest setbacks I have faced recently have been through illness and injury. I am always pushing my body to the limit in training and it is easy to sometimes push too hard. I have had a recurring knee injury which crops up now and again and when in heavy phases of training I am very susceptible to illness. A simple viral infection can cause a week off the bike and another week building up before full training can resume, and every day really does count at this stage! Do you prefer competing in the individual events or team pursuits? I love the individual pursuit and that is the specific event I was talent spotted for back in 2004, however it was removed from the Olympic programme after the 2008 Olympics. However I have been able to still compete in this event at the World Championships and in 2014 I won the individual pursuit World Title and then went on to win the Commonwealth individual pursuit title too, so this was a very special year in my career. However the Olympics will always be the biggest competition in my eyes and it is the Team Pursuit which is the Olympic event now, and has been since 2012. Winning the first ever women’s Team Pursuit Olympic Title in 2012 was incredible and this event will always be very special to me as I have been part of a team leading the way in this event since its introduction. Who is your inspiration in cycling? When I started cycling in 2004 I was inspired watching Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy at the Athens Olympics where they both won a gold medal each. They have gone on to have amazing careers over a variety of events and I have been lucky enough to be part of many GB teams competing alongside them. Bradley and Chris are also both great, down-to-earth guys, who love to have a laugh and make everyone feel welcome. I think this is a brilliant quality in such great champions.

How has your life changed since winning Gold at London 2012? I have found that I am now well recognised at cycling events and am often asked for photos and autographs, which is always a pleasure! However with success also comes pressure, and having won gold in 2012 the media will now document anything other than a win as a failure. This is a shame as I feel medals of any colour should be celebrated, although of course I do always want to win and set my own goals very high. I now also have a lot more additional commitments that I didn’t have before 2012, such as media enquiries, sponsor and charity commitments. You have accumulated so many gold medals now… do you have space in your house for anymore?! Haha, yes I will always find space for some more!! Do you get chance to explore the borough’s countryside on two wheels? I moved to Middleton in 2010 and spend many hours each week out of my bike exploring the roads. I head north out of Middleton, through Heywood, and up to the moors over Owd Betts, or I ride out through Littleborough towards Todmorden and climbs such as Cragg Vale. The roads here are brilliant for training on with so many choices of tough climbs to conquer. I have also ridden along the canal path from Middleton up to Hebden Bridge which is a lovely traffic free ride. Do people recognise you when you’re out on the bike? Yes I do get recognised sometimes out on the bike. Most cyclists like to say hi or have a quick chat and some like to see if they can beat me up hills, but I quite enjoy this aspect of cycling. It is so accessible – anybody can ride on the same roads I train on and I’m always happy to have a chat with other keen cyclists. How would you encourage more people to get into cycling? I would like to see more closed road facilities, which enable skills to be taught in a traffic free environment and can also host races, again away from traffic. I think road safety is very important and I would like to see more cycle paths. I think most people just need to gain confidence and there are some great cycling clubs in the area which encourage new members. My husband Dan, who grew up in Littleborough, runs a weekly women’s cycling session in Rochdale where he teaches riders of any ability a range of skills from road riding skills to group riding skills, which has been well received.

CORONATION STREET’S SHANNON FLYNN STYLE RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH YOUNG ROCHDALE ACTRESS SHANNON FLYNN, WHO IS CURRENTLY PLAYING LAUREN ON THE NATION’S FAVOURITE STREET, AS PART OF BETHANY PLATT’S BULLYING STORYLINE. The talented actress is no stranger to our screens, and at just 19 years of age has already amassed a long list of television credits including Holby City, Scott & Bailey, Shameless, Doctors, Newsround and Blue Peter. She is perhaps best known for her long running role as Emily James in Waterloo Road, while younger readers may recognise her from children’s series Dani’s Castle or for her presenting role on CBBC’s Friday Download. 8

Shannon plays Lauren (right) on Coronation Street

STYLE EXCLUSIVE

Where did your acting career begin?

I've always been really into performing ever since I was old enough to talk. I'd put on little shows for my friends and family and then it was one of my teachers at school who suggested that I should think about going to some sort of drama class. So I joined Starstuck Theatre School in Rochdale to mainly build my confidence. Colin Meredith, who ran the classes, also used to put on the local pantomime and cast me in 'Babes in the Wood' as Jill when I was eight years old - that was my first time being on stage really and I just fell in love with everything about it. After that, I got signed with an agent and my first professional job was Macbeth at the Royal Exchange Theatre, which was an incredible production to be a part of, especially as my first job. I then went on to feature in lots of other TV productions and radio plays so I've been very very lucky.

What was it like to step onto the famous cobbles?

It's quite surreal stepping onto the cobbles as its so iconic. But so much fun – it really helps you get into character when you're on there (although it’s hard to walk on when you’re wearing heels)!

Do you find that people recognise you from the soap?

So far I've only been recognised once which I'm quite relieved about. As they dress me quite chavvy, with really harsh make up, so I'm pleased I don't look like that outside of filming. I just get a lot of “I recognise your face, do I know you from somewhere?”. I still get recognised by children pretty much everytime I go out from my roles on CBBC and I still get the odd “are you that girl out of Waterloo Road?” . Shannon as Emily in Waterloo Road, 2009

You’re currently playing Lauren on Coronation Street, who is the bully of Bethany Platt... What's it like playing a nasty character?

I honestly love playing a nasty character like Lauren. I suppose it's nice to be liked, but I just think you get much grittier scenes and dialogue being the nasty one. It's never dull anyway and it’s fun really getting into the role. My character in Waterloo Road was also a nasty, manipulative character so it's not my first time being a meany!

Will viewers get to see more of Lauren in the near future?

I think my favourite scenes to film so far were my first ones when Lauren was first introduced. She was really vicious - lots of hair pulling and some horrible name calling, which was actually a lot of fun to film. We had a stunt coordinator with us on set to help make it look authentic which was exciting.

Do you feel that the storyline will help to highlight the problem of bullying?

Hopefully. Although I do think that people are much more aware of bullying now than they ever have been before and more is being done to raise awareness and hopefully eventually put an end to bullying altogether. During my time at CBBC I was part of the Newsround anti-bullying special where we discussed different worries and concerns regarding bullying issues so it's a topic I'm very familiar with.

Do you watch yourself on television?

I do watch myself on TV yes, and as much as it makes me cringe I think it's important to see where you can improve and how you're coming across and what you need to change to be better… I'm my own worst critic!

You’ve had long running roles in Waterloo Road and Dani’s Castle, as well as Coronation Street, but what has been the highlight of your career so far?

Most of the things I've done I'd class as highlights, each for different reasons. I've enjoyed everything I've had the pleasure of doing so far but I did do a film at the end of 2015 which was shot in Swansea, a place I'd never been before, and I had my first lot of night shoots on the movie so it was full of new experiences and I love seeing new places that I might not visit otherwise. I also had the opportunity to attend the children's Bafta’s and present an award, as well as presenting behind the scenes and an award at the Radio 1 Teen Awards, live, infront of 10,000 people at the o2 arena in London, which were both such great experiences. And then I got to walk the red carpet at the premiere of my film with my dad, which was such a surreal day; I feel so privileged to have been involved in all of those things already.

What would be your dream job?

Lauren does come back after a short break to cause more havoc so keep your eyes peeled for more nastiness! Which scenes have been your favourite to film so far?

fan! They are some of the most genuine lovely girls I've ever met in the industry and not only are they incredibly talented, they are so grounded and always so friendly.

You recently left your role as a presenter on CBBC’s Friday Download - is presenting something you'd like to do more of?

I do love presenting too - it's so much fun and very different from acting. I like the control I have when presenting because I'm being myself instead of playing a character, so I get a lot more say on everything. Although, it's daunting as people are judging my own personality and not a character I’m playing. But I definitely love presenting and would love to do more of it in the future.

Who were you most excited to meet/interview when presenting Friday Download?

We met loads of cool people on Friday Download like Jason Derulo, 5 Seconds of Summer, Nick Jonas, The Vamps, One Direction etc, and I'm not sure if there was anyone I was really excited about meeting but after interviewing Little Mix I'm such a big

I would love to do more films and adult dramas acting wise. I'm a big fan of Anna Friel, especially because she's from Rochdale and she's done so well - it would be really cool if I got to work with her. I'd also love to do more presenting - I'm so jealous of Caroline Flack presenting Love Island in Spain! That would be a dream job, as I'm such a fan of the show as well. I'd love to follow in the footsteps of Phillip Schofield - going from children's presenting to the likes of This Morning would be brilliant. What advice would you give to young people hoping for an acting career?

My advice would be if you have a real passion for acting and performing, don't give up! It's not easy and you'll have many setbacks along the way, so don't be too sensitive and keep pushing. I'd also say look at getting an agent as they will be the ones pushing you for auditions and keep your eye out for any open casting calls that you can go to. Meet as many people as you can, get your face out there and always be punctual, professional and polite.

WALTER KERSHAW An Artist Of Worldwide Importance

I MUST HAVE GONE PAST WALTER KERSHAW’S STUDIO ON TODMORDEN ROAD LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF TIMES SINCE I MOVED TO ROCHDALE. FINALLY, EARLIER IN THE YEAR, SEEING THE ‘OPEN’ SIGN ON THE DOOR, I STOPPED AND WENT IN. Ignore the Walter Kershaw that you may have read about in the local press, you need to meet him in real life. Walter, to coin an overused expression, is simply unique. No-one else in this country has made such an impact with public art. Millions of people have seen his large murals at Trafford Park, in London and as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil. Walter’s base in the old Co-op at 193 Todmorden Road in Littleborough is an Aladdin’s cave of pictures of all sizes and styles, mixed in with books, record sleeves, postcards and photographs. Classical music blares out of an ancient stereo record player and one is transported into this extraordinary creative hub. One of the first things that Walter shows me is a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, rescued from the now redundant St John's Church in Smallbridge. This copy was painted in 1878 by Ellen Cook, the wife of the vicar of St John's. It was originally displayed behind the altar. Women from Smithy Bridge textile company, Cleland & McIver, have kindly helped with repairing the stitching on the canvas. Walter is painstakingly 16

This is an attack on the over use of signs and instructions in our public spaces. Walter is particularly incensed that prohibition signs are close to Rochdale's famous War Memorial, an Edgar Lutyens design. The painting is a provocative piece which got me thinking - as art is often meant to – about the society that we live in.

Rochdale Manager Keith Hill

REWARDING SEASON FOR THE DALE Style’s guest writer, Max Hartle (left), with Rochdale AFC player Peter Vincenti.

For around 8 years, I have been following the Dale. At times it has been frustrating, but the 2015/16 has, overall, seen yet another great innings for the Blues. All images by JMSportPix

A repeat fixture from last season saw us beat Peterborough United comfortably in the first game of the home season and hopes were high for us, having narrowly missed out on a play-off spot to Chesterfield the season previous. Rochdale entered September, having amassed ten points from a possible fifteen, a 3-0 victory over Keith Hill’s old club Barnsley being a particular highlight. An average September which included defeat to the would be runners-up Burton was followed by a rather unsatisfactory October, the Dale losing two and drawing four of their league matches. We did, however, deliver the goods in the FA Cup first round thanks to a healthy 3-1 win over Swindon and the rest of November served Dale well, with two strong victories over Port Vale and strugglers Doncaster. December included a tidy victory over relegation candidates Colchester, an inevitably postponed Boxing Day fixture, and a narrow defeat to bitter rivals Bury in the cup (let’s not dwell on this one too much!). We entered the new year with a solid thirty one points, sitting in thirteenth position.

D

ale restarted their campaign very well, putting high-flyers Walsall on the receiving end of a 3-0 thumping on their own turf. January victory over league leaders Burton served as mere consolation for the Dale, who started the game fresh from an embarrassing 6-1 defeat to Barnsley (whoops!). February was an arduous one for Keith Hill’s Barmy Army, picking up a paltry two points from a possible twelve and suffering a poor defeat to bottom of the league Crewe

Alexandra in the process; a game which certainly raised a few eyebrows among the Dale faithful. However, we seemed to book our ideas up towards the end of the month with a pleasing victories over both Fleetwood and Sheffield United. The months of March and April saw a super spell for Rochdale, back to back victories over two local foes, namely Bury and Oldham, were the icing on the cake. By mid April, Dale had earnt a deserved seventeen extra

points and enjoyed a meteoric rise to eighth place, just four points off the last play-off spot. A much needed win over Gillingham failed to materialise and defeat to Port Vale put an end Dale’s play off hopes. However, we had risen to an excellent position considering performances had initially been somewhat inconsistent. Although we had little to play for other than pride, last day triumph over already relegated Colchester provided season closure for us Dale fans and we were all very proud to

find out that the team had surpassed last season’s points total, setting a new record and raising the bar for next season. The relative success of 2015/16 would not have been possible without sensible management from Keith Hill and his team and the continued development of the players. Hilly’s signings have proved to be prudent; Donal McDermott and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing have added invaluable creativity and pace and the arrival of Niall Canavan sured up

our defence. Fan favourites such as Ian Henderson, Jamie Allen and Josh Lillis have had solid seasons and Callum Camps, a product of our own academy, has taken the opportunity of first team football very well and has produced some absolutely sterling performances and cracking goals. Ultimately, our realistic goal has been achieved. We have once again finished in the top half, and we are continuing to establish ourselves as a League One club. I doubt there are many Dale fans who are dissatisfied with the team’s finish this season. It is a much loved topic of debate among us supporters how we’d actually fare in the Championship. Look at Yeovil two seasons ago. They were deservedly promoted from League One and suffered the effects of a massive wage bill when they came straight back down. For sure, the experience of the big teams and stadiums would be one to treasure, but considering we work on a small budget

even by League Two standards, I wonder whether the extra investment needed would be a step too far. Next season will present more challenges, with clubs now willing to spend more and more money on player recruitment. It is important that Dale recruit, having already lost two of their defenders, and continue to nurture the hot prospects who could make the first team very soon. We’re progressing well. Up the Dale. TRANSFORMING ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE

If you haven’t ventured into the town centre in the last few weeks you may be in for a surprise! The award-winning project to re-open Rochdale’s River Roch and expose the town’s historic bridge is now complete.

Revealing the Roch

Some exciting new shops, businesses and restaurants have also opened their doors and latest figures show that footfall in Rochdale Town Centre is up by almost 10%; proof that the ongoing £250 million regeneration project, which has seen the area change beyond recognition since 2010, is certainly having a positive effect. Rochdale is now the only borough in Greater Manchester to have a river running through the heart of its town centre, and the re-opening is expected to bring an extra £6.72m into Rochdale’s economy over the next ten years.

Rochdale's historic bridge

The revealing of the Roch is just the latest in Rochdale Borough Council’s regeneration of Rochdale Town Centre, which has already included the new bus station, the award winning council building, customer service centre and central library, Number One Riverside, and the new leisure centre in Entwistle Road. In contrast to these modern new developments, Rochdale also boasts some incredible heritage, with our Grade I Listed town hall, Saxon church and Grade I Listed war memorial just a stone’s throw from the newly reopened historic bridge.

THE STORY OF THE MONKEY RUN

The name The Monkey Run might ring a bell for some Style readers - it was used to describe a street where teenage boys and girls would promenade trying to attract each other's attention. The Monkey Run was also the name of a band that hailed from Rochdale 30 years ago. Before the days of the internet and social media, the only way for a local band to get noticed was to play live in pubs and clubs. The next step was usually to try and release a single, hope that legendary DJ, John Peel, would play it on the radio and wait for people to rush to a nearby record shop to buy a copy.

My first encounter with The Monkey Run was when their guitarist, Mark Hodkinson asked me to drive their van to a gig in Calderdale. At the end of the evening it appeared that the band were not going to be paid for their performance. This writer went into the manager's office and politely asked for the fee; it was quickly paid and from then on I became the manager...

The band had just released their first single, ‘I Want The Blood Of A Civil Servant’ on their own label, Intense Records. The first pressing was a DIY operation and I still remember the smell of the glue as each sleeve was folded and stuck together. We sent out review copies and got coverage in the music press; John

Peel played the single on his radio show. Things were happening! Later in the summer, the band were invited to support Middleton’s finest – The Chameleons – at Manchester’s International Club. Newly signed by American label Geffen, The Chameleons had a huge cult following, despite not having had a hit record. On Friday 12th September 1986, The Monkey Run found themselves playing to a venue that was sold out; in fact, The Chameleons broke the house record at The International with 1,200 ticket sales. It was a strange and eventful night. In many ways this secondary schoolteacher was way out of his depth in the world of rock 'n' roll, but I muddled my way through. The Chameleons' fans gave the band a fair hearing and we hurried our equipment off stage and through a side exit. During the autumn half term I went down to London to promote the reissue of the first single. I managed to get an appointment at Radio One with a stand-in producer for Janice Long’s Evening Show. He seemed intrigued that a schoolteacher was moonlighting as a band manager and we had an enjoyable chat. The record was duly played the next evening. In the New Year of 1987 the band recorded their second single, ‘Falling Upstairs’ in Suite 16 Studios off Drake Street. The producer, Dave Fielding of The Chameleons, transformed – with the help of CJ the engineer – a good song into a magnificent recording. In a tribute to The Smiths (who put their iconic

Radio One Evening Show. We were having our fifteen minutes of fame! Eighteen months after The Monkey Run’s first appearance at The International Club, I received a phone call at school during a staff training day. It was The International, offering us a support spot at the next Stone Roses gig. It was fantastic news and just the break we needed. At the time The Stone Roses were huge in Manchester, attracting sell-out crowds, despite being unsigned at the time to a record company. Again, like at The Chameleons gig, we were playing support to a band with a devoted following. The Roses's fans were pressed right up to the front of the stage waiting for their idols to appear, but we got a good reception. I have a cassette of The Monkey Run's performance and it still sounds great! The Stone Roses, though, were clearly set for much, much greater things. They were soon signed to Silvertone Records, going on to play Alexandra Palace and Spike Island.

TOWING THE LINE…

A new business venture has meant that for the first time in my driving career, choosing a new car has involved looking at things like towing capacity and kerb weights rather than 0-60 times and BHP figures. Requirements also include plenty of space inside for stock, as well as the ability to cover big distances without breaking the bank, as well as my back. So what did we consider? BMW X3

Love them or loathe them, the luxury SUV market is growing at an exponential rate. Audi have their Q5, Mercedes have the GLC but my pick of the bunch is the BMW X3. Although the current model has been with us a while it is still the pick of the BMW range for me, which has bloated over the past few years to cater for every niche imaginable. Inside is spacious and comfortable but the best part is that once unshackled from a trailer it behaves and

40

www.rochdalestyle.com

handles just like a normal estate car. There is little body roll, even from the basic models and whilst the M Sport variants do add some visual pleasantries, the standard models are just as capable. The only fly, in an otherwise very nice jar of ointment, is the iDrive command system which has been plaguing the BMW line up for some years. No doubt in time it will become intuitive but until that eureka moment occurs it will send you to distraction not a good thing out on the road.

KIA SORENTO

Want a ‘full size’ 4x4 but don’t want to part with enough money to buy a terraced house? Then the Kia may be the solution. With the ability to seat seven, this is the largest of the three cars here.

This third generation Sorento, with us since last year, has a bold and stylish design both inside and out, meaning that it looks and feels much more stylish and accomplished than its predecessors. It goes beyond the surface though as the drive train and suspension set up gives this the feel of a much more expensive car. Although saying that, keep the spec simple and only go for the extras you really want in order to get best value, both at the time of purchase and when the time comes to part. Of most importance to private buyers though will be the fact that the Sorento is available with Kia’s standard seven-year warranty. That alone should show you the confidence that Kia has in its reliability and durability of it’s Sorento. Although as my family originates from just outside the Italian port, it does annoy me that Kia continue to miss an ‘r’ out of Sorrento!

SKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT

There is nothing in the rules which says that the ideal tow car needs to be an SUV or traditional 4x4, but there is no mistaking that spreading the traction across four wheels is best. And its not

just me that recommends the Scout the caravan club have named the 2.0TDi model a class winner at its annual Tow Car of the Year Awards for 2016. The cabin is pretty utilitarian as seems to be de rigour with all products in the Volkswagen family at the moment, though, having said that the controls are well laid out and compared to the BMW system are a joy to behold.

The ride is firm but not spineshatteringly so and there’s absolutely loads of space in the boot, expanding exponentially more once the back seats goes down. Whatever you decide is the tow car of your dreams, please make sure your licence covers you to drive legally. Rules changed after 1st January 1997, so if you took your test after this time you’ll be significantly restricted as to the total weight your ‘train’ can be and how it can be made up. Anti-ageing eauty tips

Is your reflection letting you down? Have you looked in the mirror and noticed your skin changing? Have fine lines started to appear? Is your skin looking dull, thin and transparent? Perhaps you have noticed unwanted hair? Pigmentation and dark patches?

Don’t worry there is something you can do! The above are all signs of ageing, a natural process which we know is determined by our genes (thanks Mum and Dad). However there is a second type of ageing which is not predetermined and can be controlled – extrinsic ageing. Extrinsic ageing is caused by external factors which our skin faces every day; Factors such as pollution, sun exposure, heating and air conditioning. If we don’t protect our skin against these factors it can lead to the premature ageing of our skin and a disappointing reflection when we look in the mirror. Premature ageing is not something we have to sit back and accept - we can prevent it by controlling these external aggressors. The biggest factor to cause premature ageing is sun damage. A few unprotected minutes in the sun can lead to noticeable unwanted damage to our skin namely in the form of age spots (hyper – pigmentation), freckles, blotches and dehydration lines/fine lines. The most serious affect from intentional tanning without protection is of course skin cancer; a highly preventable cancer which if left untreated could be fatal. Remember UVA and UVB rays are in the air all the time, not just in hot climates. We need to protect our skin everyday with a high factor SPF that will block out these harmful rays and prevent

damage to our skin. I would recommend Darphin SPF 30 or 50 - it smells and feels luxurious, as well as protecting the skin from harmful damage. What can YOU do to prevent premature ageing? • Use a high quality and high factor SPF SPF50 is preferable • Wear a hat to keep your face protected from direct sunlight • Avoid deliberate tanning (use a false tan such as St Tropez everyday moisturiser for the face) • Use a sophisticated skincare range and ensure you use it daily • Address any skin concerns with your beauty therapist in your facial appointment • Use an anti-dark spot treatment to address concerns regarding hyper pigmentation (Try Melaperfect anti-dark spot treatment) Remember, you can buy a new dress, new shoes, brand new luscious make up but… you cannot replace your face! Keep your beautiful skin protected this summer. Emma Fitton / The Retreat

Style’s Top Wedding Tips

The average wedding now costs over £21,000 according to experts. Starting your married life with huge debts is not an ideal situation so instead of stretching beyond your limits, look at other ways to cut costs…

First, work out a budget you can afford. Once you know your budget, you’ll need to prioritise. Maybe you want to splash out on a honeymoon abroad or a professional photographer? Or does a stunning venue top your wish list? Trade one item for another to see how far that budget will stretch. Do things a little differently… find high street bargains for your bridesmaid dresses, or have a buffet or barbeque instead of a sit-down meal. With costs per head ranging from £40 to over £100, trimming the guest list can save you thousands. You can also save a fortune by picking an unpopular season or date to get married. Getting hitched outside of peak season or Mondays to Thursdays can cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half. Make your own table decorations and invites. Pinterest is a fantastic and easyto-use website and app for ideas. Use it for DIY inspiration and to set up mood boards. Sharing your Pinterest board with close family and friends is also a great way to encourage them to be a part of your wedding planning.

ROCHDALE COUPLE LAUNCH THEIR OWN MICRO BREWERY

Husband and wife team Ken and Jenny Lynch have recently launched Serious Brewing Company, Rochdale’s latest brewery. They had been enthusiastic home brewers for several years and spent the previous year researching and refining a small range of premium quality beers that they are now producing from their micro-brewery site in Rochdale.

Serious Brewing Company is now producing bottle-conditioned beers, which draw influences from traditional British ale, US craft beers and artisanal Belgian beers. The bottles are currently available from Cocktail's off-license in Littleborough, Kwoff in Bury, House of Beer in Ramsbottom and Drink?, Parcel Bar and the Fox an Goose in Hebden Bridge. They also currently supply two of their beers in cask, and hit the ground running in March when their first cask beer, Moonlight - a 4.5% stout, was voted Beer of the Festival at Oldham Beer Festival. The beers

have been on the bar at the Baum, The Flying Horse, The Old Post Office micropub in Rochdale and, slightly further afield, at The Fox and Goose, and Calan’s in Hebden Bridge, the Ashton Arms in Oldham and Brink in Manchester city centre. Serious Brewing Company is very keen to support the Rochdale economy and the local area and sources many of its resources locally. You can follow Serious Brewing Company on Twitter: @SeriousBrewCo. THEATRE REVIEW LOOKING FOR LOVE

BY RAYMOND HOPKINS ST ANN’S PLAYERS Hopkins’ play is excellently crafted, clever and hilarious as it tracks Molly’s journey to winning back her confidence and her life. Producer Dave Stopford assembled a talented cast who took on this well written romantic comedy with real gusto. The story revolves around the central character Molly Beale, played with great confidence by Joanne Frost. She finds that after twenty-one

years of marriage her husband James, played with great duplicity by Ian Mansfield, has walked out on her. After four months of being alone enters good friend and confidante Fiona, played by Sue Howarth, who convinces Molly to try the ‘six-step miracle cure’ for abandoned wives. The six steps include visiting a health Spa, drinking for three days and being pro-active rather than reactive. The plot revolves around Molly taking the six steps which results, not only in getting her husband to come back, but she also has two other

suitors vying for her affection. Fiona is helped on her journey by a strong cast which includes Michaela Kitchen as Claire Pearson, Judith Mansfield as Nancy Groves, Annette Nodwell as Lyn Harris, Dave Fielding as Paul Tritton, Tim Kieley as The Rev Thomas and Clive Hartley as Steve Miles. The audience thoroughly enjoyed this slick production, with its twists and turns, by St Ann’s Players, and will no doubt be looking forward to their next production in October. Colin Meredith

COCKADOODLEMOO LEVANTER FINE FOODS 3-5 YORKSHIRE STREET, ROCHDALE, OL16 1BH 01706 668642

10 SQUARE ST, RAMSBOTTOM, BURY, BL0 9BE

01706 551530

We ventured into Ramsbottom early one Sunday evening with some trepidation. Keen to show our visitors from London what culinary delights the North has to offer, we head straight to the small but ever popular tapas bar on Square Street, Levanter. I knew that we weren’t guaranteed to get a table, since the glowing review from critical heavyweight Jay Rayner sent many foodies on a pilgrimage to this small town, and Levanter don’t take bookings.

I’ve always thought that summer bank holidays were made for lazy days, beer gardens and BBQ’s. But in reality I spent the last long weekend navigating my way round the aisles of B&Q. After my third DIY trip of the day, I was in desperate need of a pit stop and it was time for something grilled! I stepped through the doorway of CockaDoodleMoo into a cool industrial haven, the interior adorned with wooden pallets and corrugated metal. What a transformation from the dingy days of Yates’s Wine Lodge; I was suitably impressed. The place was ship-shape and ready for business with every sauce bottle standing to attention on the neatly laid tables. The vast menu takes some digesting so we were grateful for the friendly recommendations from the staff. After some intense discussion we plumped for the St Louis Ribs and Crispy Buffalo Wings (£18.50). When the waiter brought two wet wipes over with the food, I knew I was onto a winner! The wings were swimming in a deliciously thick BBQ sauce and the tender rib meat was smoked to perfection. Served with a 52

tray of rainbow Cajun style rice and a dollop of crunchy house slaw, the dish was almost big enough to share. But not wanting to miss out I also ordered the taco combo, filled with a generous helping of spiced chilli beef and pulled pork (£5.25) and a side of giant Cajun onion rings (£2.95) to dunk in the tangy peach & scotch bonnet sauce. All this washed down with a gloriously creamy Oreo cookie milkshake (£3.95). Stepping out onto Yorkshire Street, it’s exciting to see the regeneration of the town centre take shape, with the promise of a cinema and retail complex to follow, CockaDoodleMoo is a Rochdale pioneer for the next generation, and it’s finger licking good! Sarah Murphy

It turned out that I needn’t have worried. I’d seen some rumblings on social media that the weekly delivery of Galician steaks had been delayed, so the Sunday special 1kg rib eye was unfortunately off the menu. I can only assume that this warning had steered a few red blooded regulars away from Levanter this week, as we were promptly shown to a table for four when we arrived. The menu is simple and seasonal. The choices change each week with only a couple of favourites allowed to stay on for another week, and I can see why the homemade morcilla and the Portuguese sardines with romesco salsa get a second chance. Along with the Spanish equivalent of black pudding (morcilla) which was delicately topped with a runny Goosnargh egg, we also plumped for another Mediterranean staple – the potato tortilla, which oozed magnificently as we quartered it. The charred spring onions had a lovely sweet crunch to them as we dunked them greedily into another pot of salsa. Then along came the octopus from Getaria with Cypress potatoes, crab, roast garlic and peppers, and the light and crispy deep fried seafood which we plunged into a thick squid ink alioli. Both of the fish dishes were presented so perfectly on the plate, they looked too good to eat, at least without photographing them first of course! Levanter became hugely popular in a very short space of time, meaning it’s usually a very busy place, but luckily for us, they have now expanded round the corner with Baratxuri serving up bite sized Spanish pintxo to accompany a cold glass of Alhambra. WINES for the SUMMER£ Style’s wine columnist, Jo Burnett, has worked in the wine industry for the last 10 years and is passionate about bringing great quality wine to you at the right price. Having spent quite some time slurping, she hopes to put some of this passion to good use, bringing excellent wine to Rochdale with the Deckers Wine Club. Every issue, Jo will bring Style readers a couple of specially selected wines, chosen for their top quality and exceptional value.

HELLO ROCHDALE STYLE READERS, AND FELLOW WINE DRINKERS!

W

ith the weather finally prevailing, I have been dreaming of lazy sunny afternoons in the garden; BBQ’s, reading in the sun, and warm evenings keep me outside. But what should we be drinking? White seems to be the obvious choice, but with so many bland bottles on supermarket shelves, let’s look for an alternative. Rose wine really fits the bill - some of the biggest wine brands are dominant for Rose - but the market which grew to 13% of all wine bought in the UK, is now in decline. The style of sweet, Californian rose is switching into other drinks, but the rose that inspired this style was, of course, Provence Rose. I am talking about real, traditional rose, grown in the South of France, where the warm climate leads to the production of perfect wines for a sunny afternoon.

54

www.rochdalestyle.com

The wine itself can be made of up to 13 different varieties of grape, but is mostly likely to be Grenache and Cinsault. Provence Rose is light, crisp, refreshing, delicate and salmon pink in colour. 90% of the wine produced is drunk in the local area, because the wine fits the occasion & of course the weather perfectly. The second wine I am suggesting is Fleurie. Light and well suited to summer, matching up to BBQ flavours very well. Fleurie is one of ten villages in the Beaujolais region classified for producing red wine. Please dismiss any thoughts of Beaujolais Nouveau, which (depending on your age…) was a short-lived fad in the UK. Fleurie is nothing like that! Beaujolais is made using a different technique, where grapes are fermented whole, rather than crushed, which means the fermentation takes place inside the skin until it bursts. This produces the distinctive flavour of “bubble-gum”, which can be detected on the aroma of the wine. The palate produces red fruits, and violets making for a beautifully complex red.

Both of these are available on the Deckers wine club this month. You can order them over the phone or on Facebook. The wine club has no membership or obligation to buy. Mixed cases can be ordered by calling us or via our Facebook page and collected in one of our Rochdale branches, The Royal Toby or Crimble Hall. Here is hoping for a long summer, always with a glass of wine in hand! Jo Burnett

HONEYCOMB ICE CREAM THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ICE CREAMS, WITH CRUMBLING THE HONEYCOMB AT THE END THE RESULT IS A SMOOTH ICE CREAM WITH POCKETS OF CINDER TOFFEE CRUNCH. THAT IS UTTERLY A TASTE SENSATION - YOU HAVE TO TRY IT.

INGREDIENTS • 400ml milk • 100ml whipping cream • 1 vanilla pod – split • 4 egg yolks • 100g caster sugar • 100g Honeycomb - crumbled

METHOD 1) Warm the milk, cream and vanilla together and bring to a light simmer, remove from the heat and leave to infuse for 20 minutes.

2) Mix together the egg yolks and sugar, remove the vanilla pod from the milk mixture and re-boil. Pour half the mixture onto the eggs and mix well, then return the mixture back to the milk in the pan.

5) Just before removing add the honeycomb and churn a few more times. Place in the freezer for 30 minutes to firm. 6) Scoop when desired and enjoy!

3) Return the pan to the stove and place over a gentle heat stirring at all times until it coats the back of a spoon, remove from the heat and pass through a sieve. 4) When you are ready to freeze the ice cream, place in an ice cream maker and follow the guidelines for your particular machine to freeze and churn. ROCHDALE’S NEW EATERIES An array of fantastic new eateries have recently opened their doors, meaning Rochdale residents will be spoilt for choice this summer! In the heart of the town centre new American style meat shack CockaDoodleMoo is proving very popular with the locals (check out our review on page 52). Nearby, the Clock Tower Dining Room offers a fresh new dining experience for breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas where better to catch up with friends than inside the magnificent Town Hall.

Venture over to Norden and you will see that the Norden Arms has been transformed into new restaurant, Salvi’s Osteria, offering a relaxed, rustic and authentically Italian dining experience. a generous helping of ingredients and tossed in a touch of the finest olive oil and balsamic vinegar and classic chips, cooked just like your mum used to make!

Owner Maurizio Cecco already has many success stories under his belt, in Manchester city centre, but was drawn to the idea of a more rural, neighbourhood setting for his Italian food. Osteria includes all the core elements Maurizio is famous for in Manchester – the very best ingredients sourced directly from Italy by Maurizo himself; the simple Southern Italian cookery style typical of the Campania region learned from Maurizio’s mum and warm, friendly, welcoming service.

Rochdale’s own award winning chef Andrew Nutter has just opened his first Gastropub venture The Bird at Birtle (previously the iconic Bird I’Th Hand pub) which looks set to be another exciting place to eat, along with fabulous views. If you’re not in the mood for dining out then why not pop into the newest takeaway in Rochdale, Papa John’s, who offer delicious pizza to take away. Over on Sandy Lane (close to Spotland Stadium) you’ll also find Benjamin’s Italian who offer a new slant on fast food takeaway, producing popular foods such as pizza, burgers and chips. They offer everything from homemade gourmet burgers, pastas from authentic Italian recipes, healthy salads served with

RSPCa Rochdale & District Branch Registered Charity no. 232257

Although the RSPCA has had a presence in Rochdale for approximately 120 years rescuing and re-homing some of the most abused and cruelly treated animals, it wasn’t until May 2006 that the RSPCA’s Rochdale Animal Centre on Redcross Street quietly reopened its doors to the public, after a major refurbishment and building of a new extension housing a cattery. It had taken several years of fundraising and building work to reach this fantastic moment.

Since that day in May 2006 the centre has rescued and rehomed 3,644 animals, microchipped 4,665 animals and neutered 4,521 animals. Rochdale RSPCA would like to thank the generous people of the borough who have contributed to this great achievement.

Rochdale RSPCA is still moving forward, with plans to build six high quality kennels within the existing building, create an exercise area and improve the car parking on land adjacent to the centre. An appeal will be announced very soon. A 10TH SHOP FOR THE 10TH YEAR None of this comes cheaply and in their 10th year Rochdale RSPCA have opened their 10th charity shop! Devoted RSPCA volunteer, Marlene Oliver, officially opened the new shop at 423 Oldham Road, Rochdale, offering furniture and household items displayed on two floors. Members of the public can support the RSPCA’s work by

donating items to any of the shops in the borough. Collection of large items can also be arranged.

MICROCHIPPING Rochdale RSPCA recently held two free microchipping days, which resulted in 445 dogs and 64 cats being microchipped. A number of animals already microchipped had their change of ownership submitted too. Now compulsory for dogs, it is also important to keep the details up-to-date. ANIMALS FOR ADOPTION The Rochdale centre is currently taking care of 88 animals of various kinds; cats, rabbits and other small animals, most of which are awaiting loving new homes. Some have been waiting longer than others, such as Shirley and Mark. Shirley is black and white and Mark is tabby and white; both are around 8

years old and thought to be siblings. They are loving cats and very chilled, although Shirley is the boss and the first for a fuss! There’s no background on these cats as they were abandoned outside the animal centre, but the RSPCA would like them to be rehomed together and feel they would fit into any loving home.

If you feel you could help please visit the Animal Centre where there are lots of animals to meet. The staff will be happy to show you round.

the sun shone for a very special week at Springhill Hospice as patients dressed in red, white and blue and stepped back in time to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Hospice staff and volunteers transformed the Day Room into a Union Jack display reminiscent of any royal celebration. The walls were festooned with decorations, creating an indoor street party for Day Hospice patients.

Each day started with the coronation of one patient, who was then crowned ‘Queen for the Day’, sitting on a bejewelled throne, sceptre in hand. The Queen also had two inflatable Corgi dogs and a devoted butler/maid to attend her every whim.

OPEN GARDEN DAY – 7TH AUGUST 11AM – 3PM

The Open Garden Day is our opportunity to show off our beautiful grounds, show the community the fruits of our gardener’s daily labours in the vegetable garden that supply our Hospice kitchen and watch experts give floral and hanging garden demonstrations. Sample these delights, along with refreshments, including freshly made pizza from our new pizza oven and homemade cake. Everyone welcome. For more information about our events visit our website www.springhill.org.uk/fundraising.

Music spanning the decades was played as patients relived their younger days by joining in party games; tin can alley, hoop-la, pin the crown on the Queen, quizzes and charades, which of course had a royal theme.

Each day the patients went home with wonderful memories of the day, stories to tell and fond old memories evoked and photographs, capturing the day for posterity and giving families a gift for generations to come.

COMMUNITY NEWS

MARGARET HOPKINSON NAMED ROCHDALE WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2016 Women of Rochdale luncheon

Woman of the Year Margaret Hopkinson

Margaret Hopkinson, founder of the Mad Theatre Company, has been named Rochdale Woman of the Year 2016. Collecting her award the 82-year-old said she was ‘used to being on a stage but nothing like this’ and was ‘overwhelmed’.

Margaret was also instrumental in converting Butterworth Hall into a community centre in 2003 after it was at risk of demolition.

Mrs Hopkinson and her late friend, Jean McIntosh, who died 12 years ago, set up the Mad Theatre Company in Milnrow in 1971. She has produced, directed and acted in countless amateur productions ever since.

She is president of the Milnrow Literary and Scientific Society, administrative secretary of the Butterworth Hall Community Centre management committee and also a member of the Rochdale Photographic Society.

The guest of honour at the luncheon was original Calendar Girl Tricia Stewart – who was played by Helen Mirren in the hit film.

Photos courtesy of Kerry & David Hargreaves Photography.

HATS OFF TO HALIFAX! Banking consultant Lisa Hartley commented: “The day was a brilliant success with colleagues donning hats in return for donations, and encouraging our customers to do the same. Merchandise was sold throughout twelve branches of the Halifax, with branches getting special cakes made, holding a 'guess the number of sweets in the jar' competition, bake sales, book sales, non uniform - there was lots of fantastic things going on!”. The Rochdale branch alone raised £664 for Brain Tumour Research, with the total between all 12 branches coming to £1800. You can still get involved by texting the word HAT to 70660 and a donation of £5 will be given.

For the second year running, the team at Halifax, Rochdale branch, have taken part in Wear A Hat Day, the UK’s premier brain tumour awareness event, raising money to improve the lives of patients and help find a cure. This year twelve Greater Manchester branches of Halifax Building Society got involved in the fundraising, all in support of Angela Kelly, Business Manager the Rochdale branch, who sadly lost her mum Margaret in February 2015 to a brain tumour.

LOCAL LADS FUND THEIR WAY TO GOLD!

ANDREW NUTTER DISHES UP A TREAT Springhill Hospice fundraiser Melanie Caffrey was dished up a real treat this week when she visited celebrity chef, Andrew Nutter’s new gastronomic venture, The Bird at Birtle. Rochdale Man of the Year Andrew, already a brilliant supporter of the Hospice, served up a cheque for a mouth-watering £4,000, which was raised in a golden ticket draw with purchasers hoping to win the chance of an invitation to the restaurant’s opening night. The pub itself has been completely transformed by building contractors H Bell & Sons with the addition of a modern extension that beautifully complements the many original features that have been retained.

The England football team will not be the only English team in with a chance of European silverware this summer. The England Men’s National Lacrosse Team will travel to Budapest, Hungary this summer to compete in the 2016 ELF European Lacrosse Championships.

Having recently completed the works, H Bell & Sons, handed over the key to landlady Hannah Powell and Andrew Nutter. These two local family businesses have worked together to create an exciting new dining space and with a large restaurant on the upper level seating over a hundred, it is set to be a fantastic addition to the restaurant scene in the borough.

Unlike their football counterparts England’s lacrosse team are the reigning European champions and are favourites to lift the coveted trophy again. The team has strong connections with Greater Manchester with 16 of the 28-man roster hailing from the area. Glenn Humphreys, from Rochdale Lacrosse Club, is one of those players representing the area in England’s title defence this summer. Despite being one of the best players in the country Glenn will have to pay over £4000 to represent his country, as the sport of lacrosse receives no financial support. Glenn commented: “I’ve been fortunate enough to represent England a number of times since 2008. The balance of working a full time job and training like a professional athlete can prove challenging but every time I pull on the England jersey it makes all the hard work and financial investment worthwhile!”. To take the pressure off the talented squads, England Lacrosse is raising much-needed funds for the European Championship players. To support England Men’s Lacrosse Team go to: www.pledgesports.org/projects/england-mens-lacrosse-team-2016european-lacrosse-championships. You can also follow Glenn’s progress via Instagram GLENNHUMPHREYS7 and Twitter @GlennHumphreys7.

DAY HOSPICE PATIENTS BLOOM IN 'GOOD TO GROW' GROUP Springhill Hospice’s Head Gardener, Nick Dent, has devised an inspiring new activity aimed at bringing the outdoors, indoors, for Day Hospice patients. Nick’s Good To Grow scheme runs on Tuesday afternoons and encourages patients to get involved with all sort of activities, from planting seeds and creating hanging baskets, to adopting their own pot plants, tending them ready for planting in the garden. With Nick’s expert guidance and help from Day Hospice nurses, Tricia and Lynn and volunteer David Liddell, patients have learnt what plants to grow, how to take cuttings and 64

how best to pick young plants and tend to them. “Initially the scheme was to run for 8 weeks but it proved to be both enjoyable and therapeutic, so we’re thinking of extending it”, said Day Hospice Nurse, Tricia. Springhill Hospice’s award winning gardens are an integral part of the Hospice’s holistic approach to care.
