BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2023 - 2024

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

CHANGE

“-plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose “– the more things change, the more they stay the same….

As I take the reins of leadership from Mark Dressner, I am incredibly privileged to become Temple Israel’s President when we are entering our 100th anniversary year. I am starting my term at a time when Temple Israel is a thriving Reform congregation, and for that, I am grateful to Mark, our staff and clergy, our Board members and to all those past and present lay leaders who helped us get to this point.

For my first column as President, I want you to get to know a bit more about me and my family. I grew up in Prairie Village, Kansas where my family belonged to Temple B’nai Yehuda, the largest Reform congregation in KC. I studied at the University of Kansas and KU Medical School. I came to Long Beach to complete my residency in Internal Medicine and subspeciality in Rheumatology. Joanne and I met here and were married at Temple Beth El in San Pedro in 1984. We joined Temple Israel in 1991. Both of our children attended Torah Center and went through the B’nai Mitzvah and Confirmation programs. Gabrielle currently lives in Washington DC and works for Climate Nexus, which provides strategic communications services on climate change, energy, and water issues. Benjamin lives in San Francisco and is a graphic and digital designer for the University of the Pacific, Dugoni School of Dentistry. Joanne is a retired Speech-Language Pathologist. She participated in the Adult B’nai Mitzvah program in 2012 and along with her classmates celebrated her Bat Mitzvah during the first service in our newly renovated sanctuary. Energized by this experience, Joanne joined the Board where she served as VP of Ritual Practices and VP of Membership. In 2019, Joanne finished her 7 years on the Board, and I began mine. I have just completed a two-year term as Treasurer. Currently, I am semi-retired from Kaiser Permanente and working as a Partner Emeritus at several Kaiser facilities. I enjoy woodworking, golf, working in the garden with Joanne, and since the pandemic, cooking and baking challah. Each new president is presented with challenges and sets goals. I am in the enviable position of beginning my presidency at a time of stability in terms of our clergy and staff, our financial picture, and our membership numbers. Therefore, my challenge is to ensure continuity. We also look to the future with a new strategic plan under the guidance of Rick Burney. I am especially focused on increasing in-person participation at Temple events, finding ways to remove barriers for those who may have challenges participating, improving all aspects of our communication, and upgrading the member accessibility of the Temple website. With time comes change, and change is inevitable. Over the past four years, Rabbi Fox joined our congregation and Kelly

Cooper became our Cantor. Though our building was closed, we stayed connected with Zoom and remained a strong, vibrant congregation. Yet, with the pandemic still fresh in our minds, some congregants have remained reluctant, perhaps even more comfortable remaining remote. Now, as we head into the late summer and towards the High Holy Days, we are reminded of Teshuva, literally ‘to return.’ I believe that as we leave the pandemic in the rear-view mirror, it is time for us to return to our Temple and to in-person engagement. When asked, many of congregants said that it is our “community” that makes Temple Israel such a special place, and being together is what makes us a strong community. This year we will have ample opportunities to celebrate together. There will be special “centennial celebration’ programs (page 11) that you will not want to miss, so be sure to add these dates to your calendar and join us in person.

It is truly an honor to serve as your President and to give back to an organization that has meant so much to me and my family. During the next two years, I hope to get to know many more of you, and I welcome your questions and comments and will try to answer your emails (president@tilb.org) in a timely manner.

Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, is quoted as saying "change is the only constant in life." Let us fully embrace our centennial year for everything it has to offer, stability and tradition along with the ‘changes’ as we enter our second century.

IS TEMPLE ISRAEL IN YOUR WILL OR ESTATE PLAN?

If you have included Temple Israel or the Temple Israel Foundation in your will or estate plan, we want to know. We want to recognize and thank you for your generosity now, and include you as a supporter of our Next 100 Years Campaign!

If we are included, please call the Temple Office and speak with Eric Shatzkin, Executive Director, or email Eric at ejs@tilb.org Thank you so much for your support!

RITUAL PRACTICES COMMITTEE MESSAGE

RITUAL PRACTICES MESSAGE

This week we read the Torah portion Eikev, where the seven species of the land of Israel are enumerated: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates (Deuteronomy 8:8). These species have had special ritual significance in Jewish history, since at least the time of the Second Temple: only the seven species were brought as first harvests to the Temple (Mishnah Bikkurim 1:3). A practice which persists to this day is reciting a special blessing after eating from these species (Mishnah Berakhot 6:8).

All of the seven species can be found growing in Long Beach. We grow grapes in our backyard and pomegranates (decorative) in our front yard; we also used to have two fig trees, which were removed because they weren’t producing edible fruit. There’s an olive tree on our block and date palms in the neighborhood. All of this is not accidental: California has a Mediterranean climate just like Israel, and all of these species were brought here by the Spanish. And not only the fruit: I remember being excited to spot a stone olive press on a visit to Mission San Buenaventura, just like the ones you see in archeological sites in Israel.

Being out in nature here often feels like a little taste of Israel. This spring we went hiking in Weir Canyon in Orange County, and the scenery was just like in Israel, with blooming fields of black mustard, Mediterranean barley, and milk thistle – all of which are considered invasive in California – as well as the native lupine (a similar plant is native to Israel) and the prickly pear, which while native to Mexico, has been so naturalized in Israel that it gave rise to the nickname Sabra for native Israelis. And in July, at the end of the monthly Shabbat walk, we sat in a circle outside the El Dorado Nature Center and Rabbi Fox asked each person to describe how they were feeling in one word; I chose “breathing”, because the hot, dusty smell of pine needles felt like a whiff of my hometown, Jerusalem.

Of course, California is no substitute for actually visiting Israel. The congregational trip which takes place next year, led by Rabbi Fox and Cantor Cooper, will include rafting or kayaking in the upper Jordan River, and hiking in the Banias Nature Reserve. Until then, I suggest we think of Israel when we’re out in nature, walking around Long Beach, or just enjoying fruit. And maybe recite a blessing.

Please share your thoughts with me on this or other issues at VPRitualPractices@tilb.org

B'NAI MITZVAH / TEEN (KESHER)

My name is Reilly Reyes and my Bat Mitzvah is on August 5, 2023. I am looking forward to celebrating this special day with my family and friends. In my free time, I enjoy participating in a variety of sports. My current favorites are volleyball and tennis. For my Mitzvah Project, I volunteered at the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (spcaLA), located in Long Beach and the Lovejoy Foundation in Inglewood. I chose this project because I wanted to help animals in need. In July 2020, we adopted a dog (Bixby) from the Lovejoy Foundation, and I realized I wanted to help shelter dogs find forever homes. While working at the spcaLA, I helped with laundry, sorting donations, cleaning kennels, and my favorite activity - training and walking the dogs. It was a long process to work through the different levels of certification at the spcaLA, but I am happy with my accomplishment. Most recently, I started a special project to create pet portraits, which are given to adopters of dogs and cats who have been at spcaLA for a while. Please consider donating to spcala.com or lovejoyfoundation. org, or providing a much needed home to a shelter animal.

My name is Zachary, I'm an only child that lives here in Long Beach. I was born and raised here, and I attend Long Beach Newcomb Academy. My parents are Bernadette and Darrin.

August 5, 2023

Shaiah Olim Vavak will be called to the Torah for his Bar Mitzvah on August 12, 2023.

Creative, caring, brilliant and dedicated are a few words that describe this young man. Shaiah is an Honor Roll student at Oak Middle School who also enjoys acting in their Drama program. In his free time he loves reading, building legos, and video games. Shaiah is always ready to help or play with the littler kids when they need an older role model. He’s generally quiet but when he shows you his heart, you see he’s one of the most caring 13 year olds on the planet. Helping others has always been important to Shaiah, so when it came time for his Mitzvah Project he decided to go door to door and collect canned food for the O.C. Rescue Mission.

August 12, 2023

August 26, 2023

My Mitzvah Project was creating cards for hospitalized children. I worked with a national organization called Cards for Hospitalized Kids to create and deliver cards to children who were sick or injured. It was a very rewarding experience and I'm glad that I was able to make a difference in the lives of these children and to give back to the community.

I am a very creative person, and I enjoy a variety of hobbies. I love to read, and I am always looking for new books to explore. I also enjoy playing video games, and tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons with my friends. This past year I was also enrolled in a drama class and the band at my school.

KOL M'YISRAEL / A VOICE FROM ISRAEL

Friday is a busy day. Weekdays are reserved for working, exercising, seeing friends and resting, so Fridays are the errands day. Waking up a bit later than usual, I need to take stock of all the goods running low in the pantry. It might seem silly to wait until just one day to do all the errands, but as I have complained about before, the best stores are only open during the middle of the day. As I exit my house, walking down the alley, shopping list folded neatly next to my wallet, the sun always beats down a bit harder than usual. By the time my eyes adjust to the glare, I reach the main street. Already the tiny sidewalks are filled with locals also getting their errands out of the way or tourists who just need to get out of the way. Ascending the hill to the market, five times already I had to step into the street to bypass someone too slow or turn down a Chabbadnik offering me tefillin. This obstacle course leaves the sweat already starting to bead on my forehead.

Passing under the corrugated steel roof leaves, I enter the market. Passing by stalls, the vendors shout about boxes of this fruit or that for ten or twenty shekels. A game begins, between finding the best deals and falling for the vendors tricks. That good price might only be for half a kilo, and it’s important to check beyond the beautiful fruit specimens at the top of the box. Slowly, I make my way down the lane, crossing off items from the list or discovering some new produce in season to get excited about. Bags are weighed, shekels are exchanged. The change is shoved crumpled into my pockets alongside the deteriorating paper of the list. In the middle of a negotiation, never be surprised at the need to pause for a second and say hi to a passing friend. I duck into my favorite stores, where the shopkeeper has my favorite brand hidden away for me or finally has the specialty item I searched for weeks for back in stock. Eventually, I can feel my shoulders sagging under the accumulated weight of the bags and make my final stop. At the flower stand I choose the bouquet to send just the right message for the week to the man waiting at home.

By the time I reach home, the sweat is pouring down my face, bouncing off my nose, and I am struggling to keep my glasses from falling off, barely being able to lift my hand, full of the shoppings, to readjust them. I enter the house and let everything tumble onto the kitchen floor in explosive relief. Slowly I open bag after bag. The dry goods are placed in the pantry, the meats secured in the fridge, and the produce washed in the sink. Grabbing a cold glass of water, I pass the baton to the chef in the family.

INTERFAITH GREETINGS

What is the SCIC and What Does It Stand For?

Temple Israel’s membership has grown in many ways since I first began writing interfaith articles for Kol Yisra’el and many of you many not realize the relationship we have with the South Coast Interfaith Council (SCIC). In that vein, I would like to share some background.

The SCIC is the oldest and largest interfaith council in Southern California, serving 35 cities in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. In 1953, the council was first established as an ecumenical council – meaning that it was an organization comprised of only churches representing the various denominations of the Christian faith. But in 2004, with a historical vote made by the community, the council changed from ecumenical to interfaith. Today we have over 150 faith community members and 1700 individual members and are governed by our 21- member Board of Directors who represent the diversity of faiths and cultures in Southern California, committed to:

y Promoting mutual understanding, appreciation and respect among the region’s diverse religions and cultures

y Providing opportunities for conversation, partnership, education, hospitality and celebration among our members

y Respecting each other’s religious observances and, where appropriate, sharing together in common prayer

y Pursuing common goals that build unity among people of faith in the communities we serve

y Providing moral leadership on mutually agreed-upon issues

y Providing and advocating for poor, hungry, homeless and other marginalized people

y Fostering peace and justice, compassion, kindness, openness and trust

y Encouraging those we serve to embrace these values

If you would like to check out our August 13 Interfaith Café on Zoom, please call our number below to register. We hope you’ll join us for this and many more interfaith events.

To learn more, see SCIC on Facebook, visit our webpage, or contact us at office@scinterfaith.org, (562) 983-1665 and 525 E. 7th Street, Suite A202, Long Beach, CA 90813.
