FROM THE RABBI
Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn
A Journey of Discovery
There’s a remarkable instinct in many species of birds which causes them to follow the same migratory patterns year after year for centuries. The American Cliff Swallow, for example, is famous for making a 6,000-mile trek each year to the same location in Southern California. You may remember the song, recorded by Pat Boone in 1957, “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano.”
Another species, known as the Bar-tailed Godwit, is known to travel even farther. Members of this species have been tagged and tracked by satellite, revealing that they fly over 7,000 miles from Alaska to New Zealand in about nine days, without even stopping for food or water. Some 70,000 godwits make this epic journey each September, returning to their breeding grounds in Alaska six months later. One could say that Jews have a similar homing instinct that begins to stir around this time of year. It can be recognized as an impulse to return to a familiar place and state of mind they associate with their deeper self, tradition, or God – a stirring of the heart known in Hebrew as “teshuvah.” Teshuvah sometimes begins with a faint signal, like an indicator that lights up on a dashboard. It’s possible to respond to it in a perfunctory manner, like making a trip to Jiffy Lube that requires the least amount of time possible. But it’s also possible to notice that a more deliberate response turns out to be far more satisfying. The following story will illustrate this point: There were once two children who lived in rural Alaska.
They loved wandering around the beautiful coastline and observing the wildlife there. One day while they were out exploring, they spotted a female Bar-tailed Godwit building a nest near the sandy coastline. They returned several times over the next few weeks and watched as she laid her eggs and then sat on them to keep them warm. Eventually all of the eggs hatched except for one, so the mother pushed it out of the nest and it rolled down to the water and was washed farther down the beach where the children retrieved it.
They ran home where they had a few chickens that produced eggs for their family. When they arrived, they placed the egg in the nest of a hen. The hen sat on it and a few days later, to their surprise, it hatched. The baby godwit bonded with the hen as though she was its mother and followed her around the yard and learned to peck at food like other chickens. It grew up thinking it was a chicken.
One day in September, the now grown godwit was in the yard when it saw a strange shadow sweeping the ground. Continued on page 4 August-September 2015 AV-ELUL 5775 Volume 74 Number 1

.......................................................................................................................................................................................... It looked up in the sky and saw a huge flock of godwits leaving for their 7,000 mile trek to New Zealand. It felt a stirring in its soul, as though it too was being called to make the journey. Not having been around other godwits and consequently not knowing how to respond to that stirring, it returned to doing only what it knew how to do peck for food in the yard, living its life as if it was a chicken. The Jewish instinct for returning to one’s deeper self or to tradition is a powerful impulse and its source is mysterious. Some say it’s embedded in our DNA, our neshamah (soul), or our collective unconscious. Others describe it as our spiritual self calling us home. However we choose to explain it, we know that something essential to our being is lost if we, like the displaced godwit, lose the ability to recognize and respond to the call from within. And sadder still it is when, instead, we go back to our daily lives without even knowing what has been lost. This will be a good year to pay close attention to that stirring of the heart. Some years it’s easy to respond without much effort, such as when Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur falls on a weekend. You can slip in and out between errands, and maybe even squeeze in a Pilates class or a round of golf. This year, however, the first full day of Rosh Hashanah is on a Monday. Yom Kippur begins the following week on a Tuesday night and continues through Wednesday. It will take some advanced planning and a higher degree of commitment this year to respond appropriately to the call of teshuvah. Fortunately, we have a proactive and supportive congregation that understands the importance of living in accord with our deepest selves. We begin preparing for teshuvah early to get ourselves in shape for the journey. And when we finally do come together for the High Holy Days, we are ready for the most beautiful and meaningful experiences possible. You may want to consider joining us for the following: Our Religious Affairs Committee meeting to coordinate ushers and other volunteers (8/4); Our Social Justice Committee meeting to plan for the Yom Kippur Social Justice Hour (8/11); Two Israel-related programs to raise awareness about timely issues (8/6 & 8/27); Havdalah on the Beach (8/29); Our first day of Religious School (8/30); High Holy Day workshops and our Selichot service (9/5). For information about our High Holy Day observances, which begin with Erev Rosh Hashanah (9/13), see our service schedule.

PRESIDENTIAL
Perspective
Transitions. A wave of emotions comes over me as we, once again, look ahead to our High Holy Days in September. I can’t believe a year has passed since I resumed the position of Douglas M. Jacobs the President of Temple Israel. By President the time you read this article, I will have only 11 months remaining in my second year at the helm. Together, we will make the transition from our Jewish year of 5775 to 5776, when we ask God to forgive us for our sins and transgressions, and make promises to do it better next year. Another transition is a new composition of our Board. New members have joined us and others have moved on. Each of us is dedicated to serving Temple Israel, the best Temple in all of South Florida. Thanks to our Rabbi and his innovative Health and Wellness initiative, we celebrate another transition: from who we are to who we might become. Rabbi has already started working on plans for this year so keep an eye out for other innovative programs. Our Religious School leadership is also in transition. Donna Seldes and Deborah Sherman-Gorelick are moving on; Karen Susman is stepping in as our new Director of Education and Youth Engagement. Karen has plans for our new school year that will give students a greater sense of their Jewish identity and heritage. We have transitioned to gaining more outreach outside of our four walls. We have engaged with the Jewish Outreach Institute to bring the spirit of transition beyond temple walls. We provided a concierge on the streets of Miami, Wynwood and other surrounding areas. We want to reach out to as many people as possible and let them know about Temple Israel.
Most of our programs and services are free and open to both members and community participants, such as our
The most constant and most important transition we make is internal. The High Holy Days are a time for reflection, to see where we are, and determine where we want to be. We thank you for your continued membership in Temple

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR A MUSICAL INTERLUDE A Service Heard Around the World! By the time you read this, in early August, we will be knee deep in preparations for the upcoming High Holy Days. People say that this is our “World Series” or our “Super Joel Berger Executive Director Bowl”. There are many factors that go into preparation of the holidays so I won’t bore you with them. But rest assured we are working hard to always make the next year’s High Holy Days better than last year’s. You should have already received your forms for the Book of Memory in the mail. Each year, we present a Book of Memory for you to remember your loved ones who have passed away. These books are used at the four Yizkor (Memorial) services through the year on Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret (the last day of Sukkot), Passover and Shavuot. Please make sure your forms are in by the deadline so that the names of your loved ones will be printed in this year’s Book of Memory. One of the additions that we made to last year’s High Holy Days was a Live Streaming component. A special thanks to the Abess family for helping provide the funds to make this possible. We were able to broadcast our services not only over the radio, which I understand has been going on for almost 50 years, but to a wider audience on the internet. At one point last year, our statistics told us that almost 120 people were watching at the same time! That is an amazing number of people who tuned in to see and feel our services live. So who were those people who were watching online? There is really no way to find out but I will share two stories. After the holidays, we received a letter from a member. The member informed us how sad it was to not be able to attend services due to being sick in bed. But to be able to watch online was an amazing experience. It was like being in services there with us, and he
High Holidays We are so fortunate that the eight professional singers who have sung in our High Holy Days choir for many years are all returning this fall to participate in what they all consider to be the spiritual highlight of their year. I offer them the same directive each year, when I say “I provide instruction, but not direction.” Alan Mason Each singer is encouraged Director of Music and to interpret the repertoire as Doctor of Musical Arts they find themselves moved by it, and express it freely and without inhibition. I provide instruction about the texts, and each selection’s place in the unfolding of the drama we call the Days of Awe, but each singer is free to improvise, add harmony, add rhythm, add background humming, or sit a selection out, and allow fewer singers to craft a smaller, more intimate sound. It is an endlessly exciting experience, one that we all love very much, and look forward to each year. Temple Israel Singers Singing in a choir is good for you. The companionship, self expression, learning of a skill, and sharing it with a community are all factors that improve our lives, make us happier, stronger, and more fulfilled. The Temple Israel Singers, more casually referred to as the TI Singers, welcomes your involvement. Please don’t be shy or intimidated. Everyone is welcome, and no prior experience is necessary. We sing a tremendously diverse repertoire, mostly in Hebrew, but some in English, and all of it out of the Friday night Shabbat liturgy. Rehearsals are Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30pm, beginning Thursday, October 1, with our first service being Friday evening, October 9. Please contact the temple office if you’d like to be included in our Continued on page 28 communications and scheduling.
THE TEMPLE ISRAEL SINGERS are proud to dedicate a prayer book in honor of Director of Music Dr. Alan Mason being installed as President of the Guild of Temple Musicians.

THE BDS MOVEMENT And What You Need To Know About It
August 6, 2015
Learn more about the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement, a global campaign seeking to increase economic and political pressure on Israel for its policies towards Palestinians. BDS supporters argue that the movement and criticism of it are similar to the earlier boycotts of South Africa during its apartheid era. Opponents of the movement maintain its objective is to isolate Israel

politically, undermine it economically, and stigmatize and delegitimize it. Come and hear a variety of perspectives. Guest speaker will be Keath Blatt, who serves as in-house counsel for theAmerican Israel Public Affairs Committee. As AIPAC’s sole attorney, Blatt manages a wide variety of legal issues for AIPAC and its affiliated foundation. Additionally, he serves as legal advisor on policy and government affairs, wherein he leads AIPAC’s efforts to understand and develop issues relating to BDS and the legal campaign against Israel. Sponsored by AIPAC and hosted by Temple Israel, this program is free of charge and open to the community. Register at vhernandez@aipac.org.
THE NEW ANTI-SEMITISM: The New Anti-Semitism: BDS and What is Happening on College Campuses
August 27, 2015 6:30pm - 8:30pm Temple Israel of Greater Miami 137 NE 19th St., Miami This program is for Jewish high school and college students and/or their parents. At dozens of college campuses across the country, student government councils are calling on their administrations to divest from companies that enable what they see as Israel’s mistreatment of Palestinians. The effort to pressure Israel appears to be gaining traction at campuses across the country. Our Jewish students, their parents, and all concerned citizens need to know the facts and the best ways to respond to the BDS movement’s claims. The BDS movement is an international campaign to impose Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel. Its goal is to isolate and punish Israel for its policies toward Palestinians and the West Bank. Critics argue that the BDS movement promotes the delegitimization of Israel. Sponsored by StandWithUs and hosted by Temple Israel, this program is free of charge and open to the community, but pre-registration is required. A light supper, including pizza, will be provided. Temple Israel RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Philosophy “To live and teach the sanctity of Life” .....Elie Wiesel
Summer…a time to relax…a time to regroup…for me… a time to study. This year, rather than studying in Israel, which is my favorite place and my favorite thing to do in the summer, I chose to relocate home to Miami. I have not lived here in 15 years, and in those years so many changes have taken place. I would never have recognized the area around Temple Israel. Nothing could have prepared me for the beauty of the high rises and the Midtown area. How exciting it all is to me. I am looking forward to reaching out to those families in our area. If you know of or have any friends with children who might be interested in “checking us out”, please let me know. In August we are having programming about Israel through our Adult Education Series. If you would have told me after my first trip that I would go back to Israel, I would have told you that you were crazy. I was not impressed. I was on a congregational trip with my sister’s synagogue…and felt like I was a part of a herd of cattle. On the bus, off the bus, this is a ruin. Back on the bus, off the bus, this is someone’s grave. My favorite part was being in Jerusalem because it was Shabbat and I didn’t have to get on a bus. Now I have to be honest…I found out I was pregnant in Israel and spent most of my time nauseous. Several years later I was working in a Synagogue who sent their Confirmation Class to Israel on a NFTY in Israel Teen Tour every summer. I was the “chosen one” for that particular year to accompany this class to Israel. I told the Rabbi I was not the one to go because I had no desire to return to Israel. I have now had the privilege of going to Israel 18 times...7 times leading a NFTY in Israel trip for teenagers…
3 times leading trips for congregations I have worked for (they were not a herd of cattle)…1 trip on a Federation mission…and the rest of my trips studying at various Beit Midrash around Jerusalem. Nothing anybody said or did would have prepared me for the experiences I would have, the beauty I would see, or the spirituality that would wash over me the minute I exited the plane. I hope that I can share my love of Israel, the feeling that I have, and the land that I love with you! Keep your eyes open for a trip to Israel on the horizon through Temple Israel. Now to why I am really here…The Rabbi Colman A. Zwitman Religious School. Since accepting this position, it is always on my mind. Whether it is while I am working at Temple Israel, when I am home with my dog, Yoffie, or out with friends doing something fun. Ideas come to me in the strangest places…the shower is one of them. I even have to sleep with a pad and pen next to my bed so when I have an idea in the middle of the night I can write it down. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet me yet, please do not think I’m strange. I am just a woman who loves, and is passionate, for what she does… and I am eternally grateful to have found such fulfillment in my life.
PI Z ZA I N THE HUT SEPTEMBER 28 AT 6 PM $5
Religious School is just around the corner…the end of the month to be exact. Our first activity is a “Welcome Back to School Breakfast” on Sunday, August 30th at 9:15 a.m. Here you will have the opportunity to have a delicious breakfast, meet the teachers, see the curriculum, and get a “taste” of our new T’filah (prayer) melodies. Because of the High Holy Days this year, our next Religious School will be on Sunday, September 20th. Join us on Sunday, September 27th when we will all make decorations in class and decorate the Temple Sukkah. Come and enjoy a snack in the Sukkah because it is a mitzvah to eat in the Sukkah. ADULT LEARNING
This year there will be Children’s Services for those in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade taking place on the morning of both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These services and programs will run in conjunction with the Adult Services taking place in the sanctuary. Please sign your child in at the entrance to the Gumenick Chapel, and pick up your child in the same place at the conclusion of the morning service. TIFTY, our Senior Youth Group, will be meeting twice a month; every month on a Tuesday, beginning on Tuesday, September 8th, for dinner and a program, and once a month for an activity with another youth group in the area. If you have a child in 8th through 12th grade please let me know so we can invite him/her to our TIFTY events. Being involved in a Jewish youth group is how I personally found my love of Judaism. Being involved in a Jewish youth group is how my own children solidified their love of Judaism. What do you think being involved in a Jewish Youth Group would do for your child? Come and find out. I would like to thank the Search Committee of Doug Jacobs, Rabbi Heyn, Dr. Julia Zaias, Orlee Bushman and Joel Berger for making me part of the Temple Israel Community. - Karen Susman Director of Education and Youth Engagement
What Is TIFTY? TIFTY stands for Temple Israel Federation of Temple Youth. My name is Macenna Cowen. I have been the TIFTY President for the past three years and I will be again as a senior for my last last year. TIFTY is part of a larger national organization named NFTY, National Federation for Temple Youth, which brings Jewish teens together several times a year to learn about modern Judaism in a fun atmosphere. NFTY has taught me the importance of being a Jewish teen and I hope other teens from Temple Israel want the same. Every temple chooses to have a youth group; they vary in size from one teen to around one hundred teens. Temple Israel has been working on increasing the youth group and having more events for the teens. This year, the calendar is already full with a youth group event tri-weekly. I hope to see more teens this year. If you would like more information about TIFTY, you can call me at (305) 761-5345 or contact Karen Susman at (305) 573-5900. - Macenna 18

YAHRZEITS Kaddish
May God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that He created, as is God’s wish. May God’s sovereignty soon be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen. May God’s great name be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter. And let us say: Amen. Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen. May the One who brings peace to His universe bring peace to us and to all Israel. And let us say: Amen. Zichrona L’vracha, May their memory be for a blessing. August 7:

weekly Shabbat services, our Torah Study sessions around Joseph’s Table, our Tuesday noontime classes and our Wednesday night Zohar classes. If you plan to attend any of our High Holy Day services, however, you will need tickets which will be mailed to our members in good standing. This is the season for teshuvah, a return to our deeper selves, to tradition, and to our spiritual home. It’s the season to recognize and respond to the instinctive call that is beginning to stir within us. There will be plenty of time throughout the rest of the year to go pecking for food in the yard, as it were. Look up, get ready, and join us for what could be the most wonderful journey of discovery ever.

Israel and hope you will be a part of the transitions that are going to take place. We will also reach out to you again to support our annual High Holy Day appeal. If you had a good year and like what you are hearing, please transition to a higher category and help us continue to provide the programs and services that our members need. Even at a low level, let’s come together and support the Temple like never before. From Jane, me, and our entire extended family, Happy New Year. Please join us at the President’s reception following services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah to say hello! Doug

enjoyed it so much. It truly connected us to people who were not able to come in person. The second story was a phone call I received from a friend. Now this friend is generally associated with the Orthodox movement but admitted to me that he did tune in to see what was going on. And while he did not totally enjoy the service, he shared the following. For the first time, in many years, his whole family attended the same service. His son had just left 28

for Boston and was online. He, and his immediate family, were here online in Miami. And, his family in Argentina was online at the same time. His whole family experienced the High Holy Days, online, at the same time! He said it made his holiday special to experience that. They were calling and texting each other throughout the services. It was truly a Service Heard Around the World! So while I do not recommend not coming to services, and experiencing all we have to offer, if you have to be somewhere else, and still want to experience our beautiful service and music, just go on our website and join us. You never know who will be “sitting” next to you online. Gloria, Stephanie, Lauren and I wish you all a very Happy New Year. May you all be inscribed in the Book of Life!
A MUSICAL INTERLUDE Continued from page 5
Guild of Temple Musicians The Guild of Temple Musicians was founded thirty years ago to provide a professional arena for synagogue musicians from around the world. In the GTM’s thirty year history, 15 extraordinary synagogue musicians have been installed as President, and at the recent national convention of the American Conference of Cantors and Guild of Temple Musicians, I accepted the nomination of President, and was installed in a formal ceremony in front of the joint membership of the ACC and GTM. It was a thrilling moment for me, being recognized in front of the community that has nurtured and supported me for so many years. In my address to the convention, I told them that as President of the Guild of Temple Musicians, my vision is to build a global network of synagogue musicians who know each other, are interested in each other, who know each other’s work, each other’s families, each other’s congregations, each other’s work in the field of sacred Jewish music.
