Passion to Make the World Better by Lisa Horowitz, Executive Director

We have so much to be proud of at Temple in the realm of social action and community service. I know that many of my fellow staff members share the pride and joy of Temple members in the wide array of ways, both large and small, that Temple and its congregants make the world a better place every day. One of the most tangible ways we make the world a better place is by operating our weeknight homeless shelter. Five nights a week, volunteers offer a warm and safe shelter in the Esther Diesenhaus Youth Lounge in Seattle to about 10 homeless women. It’s an easy volunteer job – just one night a month and no special skills or training required – and our volunteers report tremendous satisfaction. The women who stay with us are screened by Angeline’s shelter in Belltown. A volunteer drives our van down to Angeline’s to pick up the ladies in the evening and sleeps overnight in the board room while the ladies sleep in the youth lounge. If you would like to explore this very gratifying volunteer opportunity, please call or email Max Delsohn at (206) 323-8486 or shelter.tdhs@gmail.com. Another focus of social action at Temple, one in which I have a deep personal interest, is immigration. Many Temple members are involved in direct assistance to immigrants and organizations that serve them – serving on the boards of local endowments and nonprofits, providing pro bono legal services, and reaching out one-on-one to offer a kind word or assistance with shopping or a trip to the doctor. Immigration was the focus of the first in our series of Makhloket Leshem Shemayim, Discussion for the Sake of Heaven, hosted by Rabbi Weiner in early January after Shabbat services. Rabbi Weiner introduced the group to principles of civil discourse in a Jewish context and a spirited and wide-ranging discussion ensued. So much passion for the subject – and for making the world a better place! That’s just one of the many things to love about Temple!

Unlimited Opportunities to Do Good by Don Loeb, Board President

Dear Friends, I’m writing this as a snowstorm is (allegedly!) barreling toward Seattle, and at the same time looking toward the springtime programs and events that this edition of Tidings highlights. It’s an odd juxtaposition of seasons, but it is an appropriate reminder of the timelessness of what we do at Temple. I am proud to be President of your Temple and especially pleased and proud of the great work you – all together, with our clergy and staff - do to make the world a better place. Tikkun olam - repairing the world - can sometimes become a bit of a cliché, but at Temple our people make it a reality. Not just this issue, but every issue of Tidings is replete with evidence of the great work that is done through and by Temple: our homeless shelter, our rabbis’ pastoral work and community advocacy, the volunteers who come month after month to make meals for the homeless, our children who make sandwiches and bring in articles of clothing to donate...even humble egg cartons are repurposed for a charitable aim of providing food for the hungry by enabling the distribution of donated eggs. The list is nearly endless, as is the need. Please, accept not only our thanks but also our sincere invitation to join us for even more opportunities to do good, to repair the world, to make our corner of the world a better and more welcoming place. Thank you, Don Loeb PS. I will also make a personal plug for one of my favorite volunteer activities – the homeless shelter. We are always looking for more volunteers. It’s painless, immensely gratifying, and a great way to “give back.” Call Max Delsohn at (206) 323-8486 or email shelter.tdhs@gmail.com to learn more. Thank you.

Temple is Going Green!

We are so proud of our green initiatives over the last few years, especially in the past year, and we are grateful for our members’ strong support. Here’s what we have been doing to help save the planet and save our resources: • Composting on both campuses • Using compostable paper goods where possible • Replacing light bulbs with cost-efficient LEDs • Using low-VOC paints • Reducing paper use by using more electronic communications • Using our new energy-efficient HVAC system in Bellevue • Reducing our use of disposable K-cups, replacing them with paper filter and compostable versions • Reducing staff trips between campuses by increasing our use of Skype and phone meetings Thanks for helping us by composting on our campuses. Together, we can make a significant impact on our environment, set a great example for our kids and model the Jewish value of ba’al tashchit (caring for the Earth). Development Corner

by Aaron Alhadeff and Alison Handlin

We are thrilled to report that this year’s High Holy Day campaign met our goal. Thank you to all who contributed – and to all who contribute to Temple in so many ways throughout the year. One thing that makes our job as Development Chairs so easy – and so much fun! – is that there are so many ways we see your philanthropic contributions at work. Because the theme of this issue of Tidings is social action and community service, we would like to highlight some of the programs of which we are especially proud. Our favorite is Operation Sandwich, a Bridge Family Religion School program in which our students join with parents after school and make sandwiches for homeless people. The brainchild of Assistant Director of Religion School, Monica Neiman, the program has not only a community service but also an educational component. When we volunteered with our kids, middle school teacher Zoie Utterback explained to us why we were making these sandwiches, what Jewish values were at play, and how important it was that we were providing this food. This is just one of the many great educational programs that your contributions to the High Holy Days campaign help to support. Your contributions also help support the work our rabbis do, both within our congregation and in the broader community. They work unrelentingly for sensible gun measures, for equality and dignity for all; they lead our congregation in helping to feed the hungry, and they advocate on a wide range of social issues. And, if your family has ever been touched by sadness or joy, you know that our rabbis are right there with you, bringing solace and sharing in glad times. Thank you again for making all this possible! Aaron and Alison

Rabbi’s Corner

Tikkun Olam at Temple

by Rabbi Avi Fine, Assistant Rabbi Before creation, according to the mystical Jewish Kabbalists, all that existed was God. In order to create the world, God contracted God’s self to provide room for the world. In a simplified version, some of the light of God became contained into vessels, which could not contain the light and shattered. The shattered vessels and their light now permeate the world. For the Kabbalists, it is upon us to return the light and shards, in order to repair the world, which is where we get the Hebrew phrase, tikkun olam. Here at Temple, we are taking a little more of a literal approach to tikkun olam, to repairing the world. This year we are concentrating our tikkun olam efforts into environmental justice and immigrant support. We are one of the institutions leading the efforts toward Earth Day Northwest 2020. At Temple, we are starting a Green Team to help us reduce our waste and become more energy efficient. This effort will require all of us to help out in different ways, like composting, bringing reusable items, and more. We are also seeking ways to move our city towards carbon neutrality. Our immigrant support work involves partnering with the Seattle World School, a public school that neighbors our Capitol Hill campus. We are also partnering with organizations to accompany and care for immigrants in our community as they navigate the challenges of life. Do not worry, we will still be running the Women’s Shelter, working to prevent gun violence, and continuing with more of our on-going tikkun olam projects. By focusing our work across Temple, I hope we can engage in cross-generational conversations and be an even more powerful agent for bettering our city. On Rosh Hashanah I spoke about weaving our communal challah together. Tikkun olam is one of those methods for weaving us together. To accomplish all of this, we need your help! Please be in touch with me to learn how you can be involved and to receive on-going tikkun olam updates and opportunities.

Vote in the World Zionist Congress Election

by Rabbi Avi Fine and Elizabeth Goertzel The upcoming World Zionist Congress (WZC) elections are critically important to the Reform Movement in North America, in Israel and around the world. What is the WZC? It is the representative body of the world’s Jewish people, established in 1897, that is comprised of 500 delegates. This body meets in Jerusalem every five years and votes on important issues that influence both Israeli society and global Jewry. The 38th World Zionist Congress will meet in Jerusalem in 2020. This election, which runs from January 21-March 11, 2020, determines the size of the various delegations that will attend. This is one of the best ways North American Jews can influence on-the-ground issues in Israel. A strong voter turnout among North American Reform Jews ensures resources flow to our Israeli movement, including Reform congregations and institutions. TDHS is going to make is easy for you to vote. We will have informational cards on site and step-by-step instructions available during the voting period. Please plan to attend one of our educational sessions on Sunday mornings to answer any questions and let us further explain how important your vote is. We will also have laptops in the Lobby during preneg on Friday nights and other Temple events so that you can vote while you are at Temple. Look for our WZC Voting Booth at the Purim Carnival and receive your “I Voted Sticker”. We have pledged for 300 people from TDHS to vote. Help us to reach and exceed that pledge! Who is eligible to vote: any Jew, 18 or older (as of June 31, 2020). You must self-identify as Jewish, agree to the Jerusalem Project (the official platform of the WZC and the Zionist Movement) and pay a minimal processing fee of $7.50 that covers the cost of the election. More information will be coming via eTidings. Meanwhile, if you have any questions, please contact Rabbi Avi Fine at afine@tdhs-nw.org.

Constructive debate is integral to Judaism, but seems lost these days due to the polarization of our culture. Reclaim this Jewish value after Friday evening services in Seattle, as we bring a diversity of perspectives together for informed and thoughtful debates on key issues of the day. www.templedehirschsinai.org/shabbat-salons/

Caring Communit y

Caring Community

Act of Loving Kindness

By Liz Spiezle, Caring Community Chair A foundation of Jewish life is to participate in acts of loving kindness. Caring Community (CC) volunteers assist others in many meaningful ways providing assistance through temporary hardship. Temple believes that no one should have to face a difficult situation or illness alone, so we are called to visit the sick. A visit might take the form of a phone call, mailing a card, dropping off Shabbat candles, or delivering soup or a nutritious meal. Participating in simple acts of loving kindness generates gratitude on both sides of the connection. Did you know there are Caring Community members who help fellow congregants with rides to services and doctor appointments? Wouldn’t it be nice to share travel time to services getting to better know someone who would otherwise miss services? CC is a group of TDHS members who want to make and keep connections with others who share our Jewish beliefs. Ride shares apps do not work for everyone, and this is a great way to bring our community together. Why We Care from CC Volunteer Nuria Coe: “It's simple, really: we're a community, an extended family. If I can help, I do. Oftentimes we can't, but since we're not alone in this, others do jump in when they can. I have made a few friends delivering a simple meal now and then, making quite explicit the point that oftentimes the best gift is not the food, but the time spent paying a visit, striking up a conversation, filling them with the notion that they matter, and that we are there for them in their time of need, in the same way we hope they will be there for us when we need them.” Gratitude for CC from Barbara Schatz: “As you know we were most grateful for the meals from you, Katherine, and Beth when I had my hip replacement. It was especially heartwarming that my special dietary needs were honored, which required some thought.” Barbara has also organized activities and participated in several CC mitzvot over the years. Today the Caring Community is a “virtual” committee connecting congregants in need with our volunteers through email and organizational applications. When a calendar for meals or needed rides is distributed, it is simple and easy to chime in when a mitzvah fits your schedule. Volunteer; pay it forward with acts of loving kindness. Please let temple staff know when our fellow congregants are in need of encouragement or support. For more information contact, Liz Spiezle, liz@agelight.com.

Sist erhood (WRJ )

Ro o te d i n Ti k kun O l a m By Amy Arensberg

The idea of tikkun olam, repairing the world, can be quite overwhelming as the needs are far too many to conceptualize. So, we start at home and in our communities and, when able, donate to organizations that we are passionate about. It is important to keep in mind that each small step we take adds up to positivity we may not ever see or know about. Something as small as hearing a funny joke can turn someone’s bad day into a good one. Holding a door for someone with mobility issues or a stroller can start a positive chain reaction that can lead to continued kindness. TDHS Sisterhood is rooted in tikkun olam. For generations, we have created a welcoming environment for women of all ages, whether Temple members or not, through fun, creative, educational and spiritual activities. Through our Mitzvah Projects, we engage in events that help those less fortunate, the elderly, youth and medically fragile. We support each other through life’s inevitable challenges and teach each other the skills we have mastered. I am continually impressed with the amazing women I have met through Sisterhood. We have a lot of talent in this group! If you are new to Temple or just want to learn more about Sisterhood, I encourage you to visit our Facebook page, Sisterhood of TDHS, to read about upcoming events and opportunities to meet new people. On February 4th at 6:30 PM, at the Bellevue Temple House, we will have a creative activity (which is still being finalized). More info coming on Facebook and through Evite. On March 10th at 6:30 PM, at the Bellevue Temple House, we are having our 2nd Annual Hamantaschen Bake and Swap. This was so much fun last year! I strongly encourage you to attend, as you will get to learn lots of recipes and folding techniques, and you’ll take home a lovely and delicious variety of these traditional Purim treats. Don’t worry if you don’t bake, it’s totally optional. From April 24th to 26th, we are having our Annual PNW Sisterhood Retreat at Camp Kalsman. This is such a fun and relaxing weekend filled with lots of optional activities and workshops. The food is delicious and plentiful and you don’t have to make it! The beautiful grounds are there for your strolling and hiking pleasure. You can be as active as you want or take in some much needed solitude. Sacred Journeys a caregiving, mourning and bereavement initiative

Sacred J ourneys

Su p po rti ng O ur Te m pl e Fa m i l y

By Laurie Warshal Cohen, Sacred Journeys

In November, Sacred Journeys sponsored an informational evening for individuals and families who wanted to learn more about funeral and legal issues surrounding end of life. About 40 people attended this event and heard from Lisa Horowitz, Temple Executive Director, Rabbi Weiner, and Janet Gray, a local Seattle attorney. Topics covered included: how Temple can support and help with funeral arrangements, a Jewish perspective on end of life, and legal documents you need to have, hopefully prior to a loved one’s death. After the workshop, we received a note from one of the attendees: Just wanted you to know that we met with Charlene at the cemetery this morning to find a plot for our urns. We’d been buying a niche in the columbarium, but when we found out at the Death and Dying Seminar last month that we could have them buried, we switched to an in-ground inurnment. It seems so much better to us than the above-ground idea. Many thanks to Sacred Journeys for sponsoring the seminar – it was great information and really helped us to formulate some of our plans. Recently, new Temple member, Lynda Matthias, volunteered to write notes of condolence to families who have lost loved ones. Wanting to get into fulfilling activities, and after making soup with Sacred Journeys, Lynda wanted to know how she could help more. She suggested writing notes to members who have experienced a loss, because we find that many times we do not connect by phone, and we have to leave a message. Thanks to Lynda’s enthusiasm and caring heart, Sacred Journeys is able to connect to our Temple family in several different ways at the time of a death in the family. As we start a new year, if you feel you have a little time to make a few phone calls or get involved in a few projects, please contact Jennifer Phillips at (206) 693-3047 or jphillips@tdhs-nw.org. We will get in touch with you and let you know how easy it is to volunteer.

Je nnifer Rosen Meade Preschool

Found ati o na l Va l ue s at J RM

by Shannon Solomon, Early Childhood Education Director We ended the calendar year with an amazing evening for families at the Chanukah Art Show. The performance by all the age groups was heart-warming and joyful. Throughout our program this school year, we have been teaching our six foundational Jewish values. Two values that have been a primary focus are Kavod and Tikkun Olam. Kavod, meaning honor and respect, is our first value that lends itself easily to integrate into our program. Every day our teachers utilize real-life teachable moments to instill what it means to be respectful to God, others, the community and environment, as well as to oneself. Whether we are listening to our teachers in the classroom, sitting quietly during the blessing from the rabbi at Tot Shabbat, or using our toys and equipment in the correct manner, opportunities to teach Kavod are endless. If you ask one of the children in our Sand Cat or Leopard classrooms what Kavod is, you'll most often hear that it is being kind to others. Who doesn't love to hear that! Tikkun Olam is another value that we discuss on a daily basis in the classrooms. Starting with taking care of our classroom environment and learning what it means to be part of a community, our preschool rooms have "community helpers" who are responsible for helping to take care of specific tasks in the room. We also introduce how we can help to take care of the Earth by learning to recycle and compost. Join us any Friday at 10:00 AM for Tot Shabbat - it's always a wonderful time! Full Time Infant spaces available now. Information for the 2020-21 School Year will be available in the upcoming months. If you would like to learn more about our early childhood programs, or to schedule a tour, please email me at ssolomon@tdhs-nw.org or call me directly at (425) 559-2571.

How O ur Stud e nts G i v e B a c k

by Stacey Delcau, RJE, Director of Education In order to repair the world our Rabbis say we have to first acknowledge that it is broken. Across our entire program our K-8th graders engage in a variety of ways to help repair our world, learning about the Jewish texts that guide our actions as well as taking action in our community. Our K-2nd grade students and families gather for a special program on a Saturday evening to celebrate the end of Shabbat together and engage in a no-sew blanket making project for children receiving care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Our 3rd and 4th graders join with their families on Sunday mornings to make connections between our Jewish values and specific social service organizations in our greater Seattle community. We partner with Jewish Family Services to engage all 5th graders and their family members in a meaningful community service project focused on food insecurity, immigration, or homelessness. Our 6th and 7th grade classes focus on the question, “What is my responsibility as a Jewish adult?” A major part of our responsibility as Jews is to understand that while it is not our job to complete the task, it is our responsibility to engage in repairing the brokenness in our world. This semester, the 6th grade focused on defining mitzvot (commandments) and gimilut chasadim (acts of loving kindness) and then brainstormed ways that they can increase the amount of positive energy in their lives. They categorized these actions into self, family, community, and world. As part of the 6th grade Sunday program they began conversations about their B’nai Mitzvah projects, as they discussed different demographics that they can choose to work with for their projects.  As a class, the 6th graders each chose a Seattle-based organization, researched how and when it was founded, their mission statement, and how we as individuals can help. They then shared their findings in a Tikkun Olam Fair with the Kindergarten – 5th grade classes in the hopes to inspire them to do good in the world and see all the good that IS going on in our community. Guided by the Jewish imperative from the Book of Deuteronomy (16:18) tzedek, tzedek tirdof (justice, justice shall you pursue), the 7th grade engaged in activities around such issues as food inequality, classism, and societal stumbling blocks in our local community. They then researched ways that they could make a difference. Their upcoming second semester project will focus on researching new organizations to donate to and critically looking at what the organizations do for those in need.

Tikku n O l a m i n A c ti o n Owen Birnbaum recently raised $3,000 for Mary’s Place for his Mitzvah Project. Owen set a goal of raising $500 in 10 days. He went door-to-door and used social media to advertise his goal. In under 10 days, Owen raised $3,000! Owen was able to use $1,200 to purchase toys for toy donations for the holidays for the many children that are part of their program. The remaining $1,800 went towards the No Child Sleeps Outside campaign, which equates to 105 children sleeping inside and off the streets! Owen and his family recently volunteered for the annual Holly Jolly party and were able to see some of the toys he donated get picked out by families. Mazel tov, Owen! 18

Around Temp le

Ou r Cz e c h H o l o c a us t To ra h By Lisa D. Horowitz

On Yom Kippur this year, I was deeply honored to have been asked to hold one of Temple’s Torah scrolls. The honor was magnified immensely by the fact that the scroll I held was a Holocaust Torah, on permanent loan to Temple from the Memorial Scrolls Trust. This sacred scroll’s journey to Temple began when it was written by a Torah scribe in the beginning of the 19th century for a synagogue in Eastern Europe. Along with more than 1,500 other scrolls, Temple’s Holocaust Torah had a long journey to safety. Many were transported from their original synagogues to the Jewish Museum in Prague, where more than 40 warehouses were required to store them, along with other Jewish ritual objects during the war. In the post-war years of Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, the scrolls were moved to a different location, in a ruined synagogue, before being brought to London after Czech Communists sold them to Jewish a philanthropist in 1964. The Memorial Scrolls Trust was established and now cares for more than 1,500 scrolls, which it loans out across the world. We invite you to learn more about this fascinating history at www.memorialscrollstrust.org. Temple’s scroll was rescued from a synagogue in Brno, in what is now the Czech Republic. Ten thousand were deported from Brno by the Nazis between 1941-1944 to the Terezin concentration camp; many of them were then sent to Auschwitz. Records indicate that after the war only 1,000 Jews returned to Brno. In 1988, Temple’s then-Senior Rabbi Earl Starr learned about these scrolls and the possibility of adopting one. Rabbi Starr and Art Siegel contacted the Trust and arranged for Temple to receive one of these Torahs. In April, 1988, Temple De Hirsch Sinai received a letter informing us that Torah #353 was being shipped to us on Permanent Loan. The Torah has been with us for nearly 32 years and is a treasured part of our Torah collection, a sacred link to the past and a reminder never to forget.
