MARC O’REILLY & THE HARD GROUND

DeBARRA City Hall Wednesday Jan 28th The DeBARRA clan represent the third generation of performers from a family steeped in traditional music, song and the Irish language. With roots in Co. Cork, the six De Barra brothers and their sister were raised in Dublin and began their performing careers as children. As a group, DeBARRA perform a combination of lively dance tunes and airs, original compositions, the tunes of the old harpers and traditional songs in Irish. The instrumentation in the clan ranges from harp, whistles, flute and bodhrán to bouzouki, keys and concert piano.

Doors 7.30pm Show 8:00pm €20 performed, toured and recorded with some of Ireland’s most acclaimed bands and singers including Clannad, Slide, Dervish, Damien Dempsey, Julie Feeney, Máire Breatnach, Anne-Marie O’Farrell, Brian Kennedy, Hazel O’Connor and Moya Brennan. Doors 8pm Show 8:30pm €18/15 The Hard Ground are Marlene Enright, Pat Carey, Dave Duffy, Davy Ryan and Hugh Dillon. Musically brooding and brash, sassy and sentimental, where the gravel meets the glass. Alternating between contrasting styles, sometimes raw, sometimes layered, the five-piece always pack an emotional punch. The band recorded, produced and released their first album, Broken Conversations, in 2012, then spent most of 2013 touring Ireland and the UK, where they cultivated great reviews and a following at home and abroad. They have recently finished the recordings for their second album…Expect the unexpected!

Known for their unique brand of rock that’s influenced by soul, gospel and traditional music, their shows last between two and three hours depending on the level of fever in the room. There is an unpredictable energy in the band that harkens back to the “Risk” days. Hothouse Flowers mine their deep repertoire to create a show that is unique to the time and place. No two shows are the same. Improvisation can come at any point and allows the men express their brightest and their darkest influences. “Rock and Roll is not about safety or politeness, it is @templebartrad

While North Kerry is not known for its piping tradition, people such as Paddy Keenan and Liam O’Flynn quickly became strong influences upon Leonard’s playing. He has been described within the pages of The Irish Times as …’a piper with an eye for cut-glass detail, he etches out a tune with enviable precision…’. Notable performances include appearances at many International festivals including - The Hong Kong Folk Festival, Skagen Festival (Denmark) and Shetland Folk Festival. In 14

St. Michan’s Church Thursday Jan 29th

Doors 8pm Show 8:30pm €20/15

Mick Flannery realised long ago that songwriting was the best part of this strange job of being a jobbing-gigging musician. “It’s never a chore”, Flannery says about the craft. “The creation is the nicest part, it’s something you always have and you can use it to work through stuff that’s in your head. You have to take it seriously if it’s going to be any good. It’s always my favourite thing, like putting Lego blocks together. You can make a lot of things with Lego.”

Doors 8pm Show 8:30pm €25 and hopeful. Written in a flat in Berlin over the course of seven months in 2013, Flannery returned to Ireland to record the songs, recruiting Phil Christie on piano and Alan Comerford to fill out the sound. The result is the sound of Mick Flannery getting comfortable in his skin. The sound of a man at ease with his work. The sound of a master songwriter creating his best work to date…

‘By the Rule’, Flannery’s latest record, is the work of a confident, assured songwriter, with songs that conjure a world which is by turns emotional, romantic, dark, insightful @templebartrad

SWEENEY’S MEN St. Patrick’s Cathedral Thursday Jan 29th Sweeney’s Men have often been described as a seminal influence on the revival of folk music in Ireland and abroad in the ’60s, ’70s and beyond, paving the way for all who would follow in their trad footsteps. Expect to hear their trademark interplay between mandolin and bouzouki. Expect to be moved and charmed by some of the best in the business!

AN AUDIENCE WITH DONOVAN Presented By John Kelly House of Lords Friday Jan 30th Born Donovan Philips Leitch in 1946, this folk-rock-pop troubadour exploded onto the scene in 1965 and went on to attain legendary status. This is a performer who can truly be regarded as a member of the British rock aristocracy. From folk to psychedelia through pop and back again, Donovan re-shaped the musical landscape with a rare individuality and utterly unique repertoire. His is an enviable back-catalogue that remains as relevant and vibrant today as any contemporary artist’s with songs such as ‘Jennifer Juniper’, ‘Mellow Yellow’ and ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man. This one-on-one interview with John Kelly will be a revealing look back at Donovan’s life in music over the past 50 years. 20

CARA DILLON & BAND St. Michan’s Church Friday Jan 30th Cara Dillon makes music that transcends genres and crosses barriers. While she is an accomplished trad musician, she is no purist, making music that reaches beyond the constraints and limitations of tradition. “To me, you can go anywhere with every song. The melody and message is at the forefront of everything I do. I don’t really care where the song came from, how old it is, and who did it first. It’s whether it strikes a note in my heart, does it haunt me, do I need to sing it?” Raised in the small village of Dungiven, Northern Ireland, Cara has been singing all her life. After a five year hiatus she returns (along with husband and collaborator Sam Lakeman) with her most engaging collection of songs yet. @templebartrad

/TempleBarTradFest

Doors 8pm Show 8:30pm €25 “Some folk musicians want to know every detail about a song, and I really empathise with that,” adds Cara. “But it’s not what’s important to me. I just identify with a song, I’m looking for something that touches me deeply, and I feel like I’m the vessel for letting it live on.” This promises to be a special night…

Christ Church Cathedral Friday Jan 30th

Doors 6.pm Show 6:30pm €10/€8conc

Following up on their recent CD release on the Béal label, l’air du temps/the spirit of the times, piper Mark Redmond and organist David Bremner present an hour-long concert for uilleann pipes and pipe organ duo, consisting of music from the CD and some new material. The two instruments intertwine amid the spacious acoustic of Christ Church Cathedral, of which Bremner is the Assistant Organist. Bremner and Redmond have been working together since 2012; the project is an exploration of the connections (real/ imagined) between two distinct traditions: traditional Irish slow airs and the music of the French Classical organ school. The two musicians journey through an atmospheric re-imagining of Eighteenth-Century Ireland

and France - a period of upheaval and revolutionary ferment as well as a fertile time of cross-influences. Where historical evidence is patchy, new arrangements and compositions by Bremner fabricate imaginary musical connections. The performers gratefully acknowledge the support of the Arts Council Deis Recording Award for the production of the CD.

They released ‘Teenage Kicks’ in 1978 on the Good Vibrations indie label in Belfast. The track received the ultimate accolade from DJ John Peel - he played it twice in a row on his BBC radio show. Probably the most exciting trad combination of recent times, Matt Molloy and John Carty explore the rich and varied tapestry of the fiddle and flute tradition of North Connaught. Matt Molloy is a native of Ballaghaderreen in County Roscommon – the mecca of traditional Irish flute playing. Considered by many as the greatest flute player of our time, Matt over the years has been a member of the Bothy Band, Planxty and the Chieftains. His three solo albums, as well as his trio recording with Tommy Peoples and Paul Brady in the late 70’s brought flute playing to a new level. Born in London, John Carty has established himself among the elite of Irish traditional musicians. With three solo fiddle albums, two banjo albums, two group @templebartrad

BEOGA & BIG BAND

LYNCHED

The Button Factory Saturday Jan 31st

St. Michan’s Church Sunday Feb 1st

Since their formation in 2002, Beoga have become regarded as one of the most popular and influential ensembles in modern Irish music. Their unique sound showcases the twin duelling accordions of Damian McKee and multi-instrumentalist Seán Óg Graham, pianist Liam Bradley, four times All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray and Niamh Dunne, one of Ireland’s premier young talents, on vocals and fiddle. Beoga have been described by the Wall Street Journal as ‘the best traditional band to emerge from Ireland this century’. While the backbone of their sound lies firmly within the Irish tradition Beoga have never shied away from incorporating elements from 32

Doors 8pm Show 8:30pm €25 other genres into their music. From bluesy riffs to Astor Piazzola-style jazz, to a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe, their music always returns to a vibrant Irish sound. The result is traditional, with a huge sense of fun and adventure. For over a decade Beoga have toured the world, headlined major festivals, won numerous awards, performed at the Last Night of the Proms and produced four critically acclaimed albums. Their 2009 release ‘The Incident’ was Grammy shortlisted for Best Contemporary World Music Album. Not to be missed!

Doors 5.30pm Show 6pm €10

The very definition of ‘Radical Trad’, Lynched make a sound that is defiantly theirs. Their music mines a rich seam where traditional songs and urban ballads sit cheek-byjowl with the popular entertainments of the music hall. These self-styled ‘Dublin folk miscreants’ draw from a deep pool of influences and present them with a youthful vigour and salty wit. Originally formed around the core of brothers Ian and Darragh Lynch they have expended their line up to accommodate the considerable talents of Cormac Dermody and Redie Peat. Rambunctious, raucous and real, this is a live act of foot-stomping power and unpredictable energy.

He will be joined by Damien Dempsey and Declan O’Rourke, two of Ireland’s leading singer song writers. Damien Dempsey mixes traditional Irish folk with contemporary lyrics to deliver social commentary on the positive and negative aspects arising from Ireland’s Celtic Tiger society. Sean Cannon, Eamonn Campbell, Paul Watchorn and Paul Kelly are all true legends of Irish Folk music. Sean & Eamonn were members of the iconic Dubliners for close to 30 years. Paul Watchorn, one of the best five-string banjo players in Ireland, toured the world as a member of Derek Warfield’s Sons Of Erin for many years while multiinstrumentalist Paul Kelly was a founding member of Rusty Old Halo with Mick Hanly and played with the Sharon Shannon Band worldwide for many years. In 2012 the Legendary Irish Folk group The Dubliners celebrated 50 glorious years in the music business by receiving a Lifetime 36

Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Sadly however, they subsequently suffered a body blow with the sudden tragic death of founding member ‘Banjo’ Barney McKenna. John Sheahan, after 48 years of touring, decided it was time to step off the tour bus and it was agreed that The Dubliners, as a touring band, would come to an end. And so THE DUBLIN LEGENDS were born, continuing to play all the classic songs and ballads known the world over; ‘Whiskey in The Jar’, ‘Dirty Old Town’, ‘The Wild Rover’, ‘Seven Drunken Nights’, ‘The Rare Auld Times’, ‘Finnegan’s Wake’, ‘Molly Malone’, ‘The Monto’, ‘Black Velvet Band’ & many more.

A film detailing the rise to fame of British group Levellers in the 1990’s told through the unique perspective of Jeremy Cunningham, the band’s bass player and artist. Directed by former Chumbawamba frontman Dunstan Bruce, the film focuses on the Levellers’ phenomenal success between 1988 and 1998 before they disappeared for a time.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the film Director Dunstan Bruce and members of the band (who will also perform an acoustic set in St. Patrick’s Cathedral during the festival).

However, despite reaching their lowest ebb, the band never split up and after a few years in the wilderness they reinvented themselves as a self-managing collective with their own studio, label and Beautiful Days festival, and in the process became unexpected survivors of the UK’s famously fickle music industry.

In the early 1960s the folk singer and music collector Pete Seeger (1919-2014) was a figurehead of the folk revival in America, known and respected as a performer, song writer and civil rights activist. Buoyed by newfound success, Pete and his family embarked upon a year-long world tour in 1963/64. As part of the tour the Seegers visited Ireland, where they met and recorded some of the brightest stars of the Irish folk music scene at the time. In May 1964 they travelled to rural southwest Donegal in search of an altogether different individual; elusive folk music legend John Doherty. Meeting just outside the market town of Glenties, the Seegers spent a day filming and interviewing Doherty with the help of

his friend and patron Malachy McCloskey and the English folk-music collector Peter Kennedy. This film footage is a lasting memorial to the unique bond formed between two musical figures that came from such different worlds, yet had so much in common. This film event will include an introduction by Danny Diamond and Dr Donal Caulfield, both fiddlers, who will incorporate a short musical performance of examples of Doherty’s music.

CHILDVISION PETTING FARM Temple Bar Square & Central Bank Plaza Saturday 31st Jan & Sunday Feb 1st ChildVision, Ireland’s education centre for blind children, are packing up their cuddliest and friendliest pets from their petting farm and bringing them into Temple Bar for TradFest. These animals play a very special role at ChildVision, keeping the blind and multi-disabled children who attend school there to feel their cuddly, furry, friendly shapes. The little horses spend their days helping the children who aren’t able to move very well on their own to sit up and feel ten feet tall as they explore the sensory trail. ChildVision’s patiently friendly ponies, rabbits, sheep Elvis and Seamus and micro pigs Podge and Rodge teach children the joy of being with animals.

ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL Patrick’s St, Dublin 2 Built in honour of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral stands adjacent to the famous well where legend has it Saint Patrick baptised converts on his visit to Dublin. The present building dates from 1220. The Cathedral is today the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and also serves as a popular tourist attraction in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral has been at the heart of Dublin and Ireland’s history and culture for over 800 years. There is little chance of not being awe-struck. CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL

ST. WERBURGH’S ST. MICHAN’S CHURCH CHURCH

Lord Edward St, Dublin 8

Werburgh St, Dublin 8

Church St, Dublin 7

Situated upon high ground overlooking the River Liffey, Christ Church Cathedral once stood at the very heart of medieval Dublin. It is the oldest of the City’s two Protestant Cathedrals, having been a site of worship since circa 1028 when King Sitric Silkenbeard, the christianised Hiberno-Norse nobleman established a church there. The atmospheric crypt is Dublins oldest surviving structure and currently houses the Treasures of Christ Church Exhibition. Concert goers will feel the weight of history even as they feel every note in this magnificent space…

This historic place of worship was built in 1178, shortly after the arrival of the AngloNormans, and named after St. Werburgh, abbess of Ely and patron saint of Chester who died in 699 AD. As with many of Dublin’s Anglican churches its story is one of destruction and re-construction. This is truly an atmospheric gem, rarely open to the public. Now’s your chance…

Since 1095 St. Michan’s has stood witness to a millennium of the City’s history and houses the world-famous crypts containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin’s most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families. Bram Stoker, creator of the “Dracula” stories is believed to have been amongst the many visitors to the crypts. You would be hard pressed to think of another live music venue with a more interesting basement!

Originally home to the Royal Exchange, Dublin’s City Hall was built between 1769 and 1779 to the designs of architect Thomas Cooley. The PRINTWORKS at DUBLIN CASTLE

THE BUTTON FACTORY

HOUSE OF LORDS

For over 800 years Dublin Castle has been at the heart of Irish history. In fact, the city gets its name from the ‘Dubh Linn’ or Black Pool, on the site of the present Castle Gardens and Coach House. The Printworks is the largest and newest venue in Dublin Castle, opened for Ireland’s hosting of the European Presidency in 2013. It is located in the lower courtyard on the ground floor of the Stamping Building. An incredible place to experience live music.

In the company of some of the other TradFest venues The Button Factory is very much the new kid on the block. While it may not have witnessed a thousand years of Dublin’s history, it has surely played host to a thousand unforgettable live-music shows since it opened its doors. Located in the refurbished Temple Bar Music Centre on Curved St, this custom-designed music venue boasts state of the art sound and lighting systems. Right at the beating heart of the Cultural Quarter…

Currently home to the Bank of Ireland, this imposing structure was built in 1729 to house the Irish Parliament, which it did until the passing in 1801 of the Act of Union. It still retains many stunning architectural features dating from its heyday. Highlights include the windowless front portico, built to avoid distractions from the outside when Parliament was in session, 18th-century tapestries, golden mace, and a sparkling crystal chandelier. There is arguably no other venue in the city with a greater sense of occasion.
