Chemical safety of Teknikum hoses according to REACH

Teknikum’s rubber compounds and products are manufactured according to the chemical safety guidelines of European Chemical Agency’s REACH directive.

The REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) directive guides the manufacturing of rubber products by requiring manufacturers to register substances used in their production with the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) if they are present in quantities above one tonne per year. It also requires manufacturers to evaluate the risks associated with these substances and obtain authorization for substances of very high concern. Furthermore, the directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in rubber products to protect human health and the environment. Overall, the REACH directive ensures that rubber products meet high safety standards and are environmentally friendly.

Item based CO2e emission calculation method in Teknikum

Teknikum offers its customers a possibility for item based CO2e emission calculation. The calculation can be made for customized hoses to evaluate the environmental impact of the product. Based on the calculation, the customer can define the needed amount of CO2e emission compensation.

Emission compensation

A product’s CO2e emission compensation refers to the process of offsetting or neutralizing the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions produced during the lifecycle of the product. This compensation can be achieved by investing in projects or initiatives that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere, such as renewable energy projects, reforestation efforts, or carbon capture and storage initiatives. By compensating for its emissions, the product’s owner aims to mitigate the product’s environmental impact and contribute to the fight against climate change.

Recycling and disposal

The unused rubber product must be disposed of properly. The product to be disposed of must be clean of other materials, and it must not contain residues from, for example, chemicals. Disposing of the rubber product must not harm nature.

Incineration in a waste treatment process

The rubber product must not be disposed of in a way that harms the environment.

In case the rubber product is burned, it must not be burned anywhere other than in a suitable incineration plant. If burning is not possible, the product is taken to a landfill.

Contact your local authorities to find out the waste management regulations for your area.

PED & CE marking of Teknikum hoses

Teknikum complies with The European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU and the usage of CE marking in hose products is defined in the directive.

Use of CE marking in hoses without fixed connectors is prohibited. Hoses with fixed connectors are categorized as pressure equipment, but they usually fall within the scope of sound engineering practice mentioned in the directive to ensure safe use. In these cases, the CE marking is also prohibited. Please see more information from the directive 2014/68/EU.

Hose tolerances & standards

Our straight hose dimensions comply with the requirements of the standard (SFS-EN) ISO 1307, if there are no exceeding requirements defined. In the case of more specific standards, those requirements are followed. For example, chemical hoses standard EN 12115:2021. Hose outer diameter and wall thickness tolerances are not complied simultaneously. If more specific information is needed, please contact our sales.

Our standard hose tolerances are as follows.

Packaging in wooden pallet or cage

We supply our hoses mainly in a way that up to inner/nominal diameter 150 mm hoses are coiled and packed on a wooden pallet (price will be charged separately). Bigger hoses are supplied mainly in straight position and packed in a wooden cage, in a special long wooden pallet or in a wooden box (pricing according to the size).

Please contact to our sales when concerning the right packaging.

Storage and maintenance

Standard EN ISO 8331Guideline for storage, use and maintenance of rubber hoses

According to standard EN ISO 8331, rubber hoses should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and chemicals. When in use, they should be protected from abrasion, kinking, and crushing. The hoses should not be subjected to excessive pressure or vacuum conditions. Regular visual inspections should be conducted to check for signs of damage or wear. Any damaged hoses should be replaced immediately. Cleaning and maintenance should be performed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Optimal storage conditions

The storage temperature should be no more than +25°C and less than +15°C. At a temperature above +25°C, the properties of the rubber may suffer so that the life of the rubber decreases. The warehouse heating equipment must be installed and adjusted so that the temperature of the stored products does not rise above +25°C.

The low temperature does not permanently deteriorate the properties of the rubber, although the products may stiffen when stored in the cold. When the products are taken into use from the cold storage, their temperature must rise to +25°C before installation, so that the products stiffened by the cold are not damaged. Very humid conditions must also be avoided. The humidity in the warehouse must not be so high that water condenses on the surface of the products.

Vulcanized rubber products must be protected from light, and especially from direct sunlight and strong artificial light, which has strong ultraviolet radiation.

Rubber products must be stored packaged, in airtight containers or by other means so that air currents do not affect the surface of the rubber. Products with a large surface area in relation to their volume, such as rubberized fabrics and sponge rubber products, are especially susceptible to air currents.

As ozone in particular has a very strong effect of deteriorating the properties of rubber, the storage room must not contain equipment that produces ozone, such as fluorescent or mercury vapor lamps, high-voltage electrical equipment, electric motors or other electrical equipment that may generate electric sparks or silent electrical discharges. There must also be no flue gases and organic vapors in the storage room, as they may cause an increase in the ozone concentration through a photochemical process.

General instructions for washing and disinfecting of food quality hoses

The inner rubber tube of food quality hoses generally does not add any flavors or odors to the material being transferred. However, prolonged storage or improper handling may result in taste nuisance. Therefore, before initial installation, the hoses should be steamed twice with +130°C steam for a maximum of 20 minutes at a time, with occasional cooling. Alternatively, the hose can be rinsed for 24 hours with a solution of 4g of sodium hydroxide and 5.8g of common salt in a liter of water at + 40°C.

After treatment, the hose must always be rinsed with drinkable water. The chemical resistance of hoses is affected by many factors, e.g. operating temperature, chemical properties of the substance to be transferred, rate and time of transfer. It is difficult to give precise washing and disinfection recommendations unless the actual conditions of use are known.

The information given in the table below is based on studies performed under laboratory conditions. No guarantee can be given as to the suitability of the substances, as the actual conditions of use vary. All information given in the table is indicative.
