Winifred Frimpomaa

Often, when we have problems we think of lofty solutions. The three of us realized we had similar challenges that required a convenient solution. The tools we had were simple; a computer, access to the Internet and our skills - so we racked our brains to think of how we can take what seemed like a complex need and provide a simple solution. That's how Tress was born.As you know, Tress, means a lock or strand of hair. Most of us have it. And those who have it need to style it. So we came up with an app that shows all users a stream of hairstyle photos and detailed information from users worldwide to get the best out of our hair. The three of us had no idea that our solution to such an everyday problem would be accepted and utilized by thousands of women and counting worldwide. Afua Osei is a co-founder and digital guru of She Leads Africa, a community that helps young African women achieve their professional dreams. She's been all over the world with her career serving as a Fulbright Scholar in Malaysia, working in the OfďŹ ce of First Lady Michelle Obama in the White House, and working on more than 6 different political campaigns as a strategy and communications consultant. She moved to Nigeria in 2012 to serve as a business and operations consultant at McKinsey & Co, advising large corporations and multinationals across 3 continents. She has a master's in public policy (MPP) and business administration (MBA) from the University of Chicago. When she's not working, she's probably working or trying to get her hands on mango even when it's not in season.

Named one of 15 African Women to follow on social media byEssence Magazine, Maame is keen on telling visual stories that connect, expose and explore the continent.

Why should we listen to your talk?

Maame Adjei

Girl Going Places is as much my personal biography as it is a mandate to explore and expose the continent. I believe vehemently in finding your passion and not wasting time on anything that does not move you in the direction of your destiny. My talk will focus on why it's about time we move past fear, find our passion and explore our own spaces and how these three things are intrinsically connected to my own life.

I'm a mechanical engineer by training and a global citizen at heart. Through the course of my Ph.D., I simultaneously fell in love with hands-on learning and grew my friendbase to include innovators from across the developing world. I began to wonder what hands-on learning would look like where material resources are the most constrained. That simple thought has led me to West Africa, where I have spent the last couple of years working with Ghanaian teachers to spread practical STEM learning
