Entrance to Members’ Lounge Richmond CenterStage
The much heralded CenterStage, which opened in the heart of Richmond’s downtown in September, 2009, is a $162 million, 600,000 square foot facility with stateof-the-art acoustic design and a program of world-class performing artists. Designed by the Boston architecture firm Wilson Butler Architects, The Richmond CenterStage (RCS) complex builds upon the historic restoration and renovation of the venerable Carpenter Theater by adding two smaller venues – Rhythm Hall and the Libby Gottwald Community Playhouse. The facilities also include a visual arts gallery and an innovative education facility, supported by a full complement of performance, production support space, and reception areas. In April, 2009, they selected Smarter Interiors for furniture solutions. Smarter Interiors’ principal Greg Campbell and his design team led by Senior Designer Susan O’Kelly, BFA, CID, had a solid understanding of the project and a great respect for the achievement of
Richmond’s new landmark project. Smarter Interiors worked closely with the staff of CenterStage’s management to coordinate the furniture for the performance theater, production support spaces, reception areas, ticket booth, break areas, private offices, open offices and educational classrooms. Smarter Interiors solution included specifying the HNI Corporation—Allsteel and Gunlocke products for the private offices, open offices and meeting areas. For the lobby and break room areas Smarter Interiors creatively found ways to satisfy the furniture needs while maintaining the budget and performance requirements of the ancillary furniture. When Owens & Minor, a Fortune 500 medical and surgical supply firm, built their new 160,000 square foot Richmond headquarters, they wanted to consolidate three buildings into a single, open plan that fostered more teamwork and provided expanded training
capabilities. With its contemporary looks, unique ability to turn walls into storage and material versatility, Reach and Smarter Interiors were the clear winners. The employees especially liked that the 43″ wall height now allowed them to communicate with teammates without leaving their seats. They further customized the space with 9” custom wardrobe cabinets, COM materials on every panel and the incorporated Pantone® colors. An unexpected hit with employees was their reaction to Get Set tables used in conference rooms. Conference rooms are used frequently for a variety of purposes. The ability to nest and roll Get Set tables out of the way, or fold and cart them out of the room, now allowed maximum reconfiguration of the space in a short amount of time. As a result of this project, Smarter Interiors was selected to furnish all of Owens & Minor facilities throughout the United States.
Smarter Interiors and furniture manufacturer Allsteel were selected by the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC), the public transportation company for the Greater Richmond, Virginia area, to supply the furnishings for its new $42 million headquarters and bus maintenance building which opened in 2010. GRTC, which is the primary mass transit carrier in the region, employs approximately 470 people. Smarter Interiors supplied and installed furniture for the entire facility which included offices, conference rooms, employee lounges, customer service, operations and maintenance. Designed by the architecture firm Gannett Fleming, the new facility is approximately 412,000 square‐foot complex on 12 acres, designed to the national standards for optimum on‐site circulation, space planning, and building systems in support of operations for a modern bus fleet. The project is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED® Certification.
