Pathways & Pursestrings Bringing Dignity to Women in Pakistan
Among other responsibilities, women in Pakistan have traditionally played a lead role in providing milk for their families. Through the project, Pathways and Pursestrings, these women are learning to ensure a safe milk supply and to create a source of income. A key part is played by the Village Milk Collection Agent. The role of the Village Milk Collection Agent is extremely important. Not only is she able to help home-bound women access markets, she is also trained to test milk. Milk-borne disease is a big problem, leading to widespread digestive tract disease as well as tuberculosis. As the health of the villagers improves, they are able to be more productive, in turn improving their quality of life. The Jolica Foundation is proud to partner with MEDA in this worthwhile project. The success of this project rests on the cows that produce the milk. Every $50 will enable a woman farmer to feed her cow for 5 months. From January 1 to June 30, 2011, Jolica Hostesses will be able to designate their party to support these women.

Bilqees is one of the Village Milk Collection Agents. She is 38 and has eight children. The family lived hand to mouth on the meager income from her husband’s work in a local mill and Bilqees’ sewing for neighbors. They struggled to send their children to school and to save for each daughter’s dowry. When Bilqees heard about Pathways & Pursestrings, she saw a golden opportunity: she became a Village Milk Collection Agent, working with other women in her village to set up a village milk collection unit. Within a month, 10 members had joined Bilqees’ group, and she had recruited her daughter to keep her records. Bilqees collects milk from her group on daily rounds through the village. She also supplies an animal feed supplement to her group members. She has seen her weekly income grow to Rs.1000 (about $11). Bilqees is proud of her accomplishments, but most of all she is filled with new hope for her family’s future.
