IT waSThe Old weST when cOwbOyS
were real and the cattle drives were long.
It didn’t matter how many miles had been travelled, there at the end of a long hard day on the range, the chuck wagon rolled in, a traveling cook and his wagon offering a hot meal and bit of home for the weary and hungry cowboys.
Sunset Ridge BBQ While the chuck wagon no longer rolls in, several local food trucks have brought back the idea of people gathered around food on wheels. “I think people love food trucks because there is a sense of community and social gathering outside the truck,” said Erin Caudill, who owns Sunset Ridge BBQ Food Truck with her husband, BBQ Mike. “The food truck helps draw people out.” While outside the truck, a sense of community develops, inside the truck, the owners have the opportunity to do something they love — create great food. “First and foremost Mike is very particular about his craft,” said Erin. “Our BBQ is all wood, all the time. With that wood smoke, the flavor profile stays consistent,” she said. Over the winter, Sunset Ridge worked to create a new 2021 signature item, The Hick Rib. “I may be partial,” said Erin, “but everyone who has tried it has had their mind blown,” she laughed. The Hick Rib essentially starts with the foundation of their most popular ribs, but turns it into a sandwich form. “Essentially,” said Erin, “It is a portion of the rack of ribs, sauce, pickles, and onions.” (517) 424-2026 | Tecumseh sunsetridgebbq.square.site

Funky Dawgs Eric Funk, owner of Funky Dawgs Food Truck agrees with the sense of community that forms outside of his truck. “Everybody is smiling when they walk up to a food truck,” he said. “The whole ordeal is something different and exciting and awesome. You stand outside, it’s cooked for you on site, no waiter and waitress, you just get to grab your dog and enjoy the flavors,” he said. “There is some sort of nostalgia to food trucks.” Funky Dawg offers creative takes on the traditional hot dog, like the Mac Dawg, a hot dog smothered in mac and cheese, bacon bits, and BBQ sauce or the Breakfast Dawg with sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, and maple syrup. However, the basics behind each dog are the same — always an all-beef grilled hot dog. “Grilling a hot dog makes me think of going to my grandparents house or camping,” he said. “They remind me of family get togethers when all the kids got hot dogs,” he laughs. “That makes me feel fuzzy inside, and when I see my customers smiling and enjoying that kind of nostalgia along with me, well, I know I am doing something right.”

Truck D and Flavor Flav

Truck D and Flavor Flav is another food truck that recently drove into the local scene, offering an eclectic mix of craft tacos and other original and fresh street fare. Truck D and Flavor Flav is a drivable extension of Tecumseh Brewing Company, owned by Kyle Dewitt and Tim Schmidt. “Our food truck allows us to venture into other food creations and expand our varietals,” said Dewitt. “Chef Andrew and our creative crew love to branch out, tinker and experiment with all kinds of culinary methods and traditions, which typically manifests itself in our weekly specials at the brewery, but now the truck provides another creative outlet,” he said.
Truck D’s food is wide-ranging, with everything from their Chicken Tinga Tacos, which include spiced shredded chicken, chipotle crema, pickled onions, cotija cheese and cilantro to their Cauliflower Tacos which include tempurabattered cauliflower, roasted red pepper aioli, pico de gallo, pickled red onions, goat cheese and cilantro. Their jumbo breakfast burritos are also a popular weekend find.
The local food truck scene has grown over the past few years, with both food truck only businesses and with restaurants like Tecumseh Brewing Company offering satellite food trucks sent out to various community locations. Many of the local food trucks offer private party packages as well, adding a unique food experience to events like family reunions and weddings.
“I believe people love food trucks for many reasons,” said Dewitt. “but in particular, because it gives adults that ‘kid chasing an ice cream truck’ sensation. I also feel like people enjoy getting a fresh and creative meal from a vehicle at random locations, like getting a giant burrito while grocery shopping, or street tacos coming off a golf course. Food trucks embody the creative culinary spirit that so many people enjoy and appreciate.”
