TEXAS TECH TRACK AND FIELD - 2013

WELCOME TO TEXAS TECH TRACK AND FIELD FANS AND MEDIA, On behalf of the entire Texas Tech track and field program we thank you for your support of our program. We strive to follow the Texas Tech Athletics Department mission statement of educating, serving and growing fearless champions each and every day within our very own program. Texas Tech student-athletes are some of the finest in the country both on and off the track, and we look to continue that reputation this season. We had 22 athletes earn All-America honors last year between the indoor and outdoor seasons, while 11 were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team - nine of which were first team selections. That balance of academic and athletic excellence is something we are proud of and strive for each and every day - and we could not do it without your support. Thank you, and as always Guns Up!

nder the guidance of 14th year head coach Wes Kittley, the Texas Tech track and field program has risen as a national power from the south plains of West Texas. As evidenced by the sevenmember red and black contingent at the 2012 London Olympics the Red Raider and Lady Raider track and field program is among the elite in the nation. During Kittley’s tenure alone nine Texas Tech athletes have gone on to qualify for the Olympic Games nearly 150 have earned All-America honors , over 90 have won Big 12 titles and 15 Red Raiders and Lady Raiders have been crowned as national champions - including two at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. Kittley is the second-longest tenured head coach at Texas Tech and during the 2012 outdoor season was named the Mountain Region Women’s Coach of the Year.

“LONG LIVE

THE MATADORS” Carol of Lights To celebrate the holiday season Texas Tech holds an annual event called the Carol of Lights. The event starts off with the Texas Tech University Combined Choirs performing selections of classic holiday songs at the Science Quadrangle. When the lighting ceremony commences, Students as well as those who came for the show stand in awe as over 25,000 red, white, and orange lights illuminate the 13 buildings surrounding memorial circle.

and faced the daily presence of the “Hook ‘em Horns” hand sign used by University of Texas fans. So, the Dippels decided to retaliate. They looked to mascot Raider Red and his raised guns for their inspiration and in 1971 developed the Guns Up hand symbol. The Saddle Tramps and Texas Tech cheerleaders immediately adopted Guns Up and a new tradition was born. Masked Rider The Masked Rider is the oldest and most popular mascot of Texas Tech University that still exists today. Originally the Masked Rider started as a dare in 1936 and was then called the ghost rider, because no one knew the rider’s identity. These ghost riders circled the field at home football games and then disappeared.

This tradition started in 1959 when Harold Hinn came up with the idea and provided the funds to cover the science quadrangle and the administration building with lights. Unfortunately students were away on Christmas break and did not see the display. The next year the Residence Hall Association created the Christmas Sing, which is now known as the Carol of Lights. Today, the Carol of Lights is one of Texas Tech’s favorite traditions.

The Masked Rider did not become an official mascot until 1954, when Joe Kirk Fulton led the team out onto the field at the Gator Bowl. Fulton, wearing Levi’s, red shirt, a black cape and mounted on a black horse awed the crowd as the team made one of the most sensational entrances ever.

The Double-T There is no other symbol more recognized with Texas Tech than the Double T symbol. Though no one has yet stepped forward to claim credit for its design, historical evidence points to Texas Tech’s first football coach E.Y. Freeland, who put the Double T logo on sweaters for the football players.

Today the Masked Rider, with his or her guns up, leads the team out onto the field for all of the home games. The Masked Rider is one of the most visible figures at Tech. Saddle Tramps Formed by Tech student Arch Lamb in 1936, this all-male booster organization supports men’s athletics at Texas Tech. The name Saddle Tramp came from the stories of traveling men who would come to a farm for a brief time, fix up some things and move on. Lamb said he decided that he could fix up some things himself before moving on, and the Saddle Tramps were born. Since that time the Saddle Tramps believe if something was for the betterment of Texas Tech then they would work at it. These Midnight Raiders “paint the campus red” with crepe

Guns Up The “Guns Up” sign is the widely recognized greeting of one Red Raider to another. It is also the sign of victory displayed by the crowd at every athletic event. The sign is made by extending the index finger outward while extending the thumb upward and tucking in the middle, little and fourth fingers to form a gun. The sign can be traced back to L. Glenn Dippel, a 1961 alumnus of Texas Tech. He and his wife Roxie were living in Austin TEXAS TECH TRACK AND FIELD

paper before big home games, form the legendary “Bell Circle” moments before kickoff, ring Bangin’ Bertha, participate in parades and other campus events (including the Carol of Lights), and ring the Victory Bells after Red Raider victories. Victory Bells In 1936 victory bells were given to Texas Tech as a class gift. The bells rang for the first time at the 1936 class’s graduation. It is said that after the win over TCU, the following year, the bells rang through out the night. The bells kept Lubbock residents up all night. Thereafter, the bell ringing was limited to 30 minutes. Saddle Tramps ring the bells after Texas Tech victories and during special occasions. The Victory Bells - one large and one small, which combine to weigh 1,200 pounds hang in the east tower of the Administration Building. Will Rogers and Soapsuds One of the most well known landmarks on campus is the statue of Will Rogers and his horse Soapsuds. This memorial was dedicated on February 16, 1950 by longtime friend of Rogers, Amon G. Carter. Carter believed Texas Tech was the perfect setting for the statue and that it would fit into the traditions and scenery of West Texas.

4 OLYMPIC MEDALISTS 15 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 176 ALL-AMERICANS 95 BIG 12 CHAMPIONS

WES KITTLEY HEAD COACH - 14TH SEASON Texas Tech Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Wes Kittley enters his 14th season at the helm of the Red Raider and Lady Raiders in 2013. The architect of a track and field dynasty at nearby Division II Abilene Christian, Kittley has built the Texas Tech program into a perennial power on the national stage for the past decade. Under his tutelage, Texas Tech has produced nine Olympic Qualifiers, four Olympic Medalists, 13 national champions, 205 All-Americans and 88 Big 12 Champions. Meanwhile he guided Texas Tech to its first Big 12 team title in school history as the Red Raiders took home the men’s Big 12 Championship during the 2005 season. At the 2012 London Olympics, the Texas Tech track and field program was represented with a contingent of seven former athletes - all of whom competed at Texas Tech during Kittley’s tenure. The group brought home three medals - a gold, silver and bronze. Most recently, Texas Tech produced the 2012 men’s NCAA Cross Country Champion as Kennedy Kithuka went undefeated in seven meets during the 2012 season on his way to taking home the NCAA crown and being named the 2012 Male Athlete of the Year for the 2012 cross country season. Kittley has been recognized nationally for his efforts at Texas Tech as he has twice been named the Women’s Regional Coach of the Year in the last four years. Kittley most recently earned the recognition following the 2012 season after receiving the award in 2009. Kittley and his renowned coaching staff have produced four NCAA Champions in the last four seasons. That streak began as Sally Kipyego, the most decorated individual athlete in NCAA history, ended her remarkable career with her

ninth NCAA Championship as she won the women’s indoor 5,000-meter crown in 2009. Kipyego made history as an athlete under Kittley and his staff. The Kenyan native broke the NCAA record with nine national titles during her career in both track and field and cross country before going on to qualify for the Kenyan Olympic team. At the 2012 London Olympics she won silver in the 10,000-meter run before nearly medaling again in the 5,000-meter run and finishing fourth. Meanwhile, thrower D’Andra Carter went on to win Tech’s second national title of 2009 during the outdoor season as she became Texas Tech’s first discus national champion. She was followed by Julian Wruck who won a men’s discus title during the 2011 outdoor season. Texas Tech brought home a total of 32 All-America honors during the unprecedented 2010 season, 17 indoor and 15 outdoor honors being claimed by Red Raiders and Lady Raiders under Kittley’s watch. Following the 2005 men’s Big 12 Championship meet, Kittley led 31 of his athletes, the most of any program in the country to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Kittley moved to Lubbock after leading one of the most successful programs in the history of collegiate track and field. While at Abilene Christian University, Kittley won an unprecedented 29 national track and field championships, the most in Divisions I and II combined. His total is only three short of the all-time record held by Division III Kenyon College swimming and diving coach Jim Steen. Kittley won his first national championship in 1985 when his women’s Wildcat squad won the Division II outdoor championship, a title he would win again in `86, `87 and `88. When

ACU combined their programs in 1993, Kittley was selected to head the men’s team, as well. He wasted no time taking a floundering men’s program to an elite level, winning the Division II indoor title in his first season. His 15-year tenure at ACU included coaching 12 Olympic qualifiers, three Pan-American Games athletes, five World University Games athletes, 16 athletes who have qualified for the world championships and one United States national champion. In the fall of 2006, Kittley was honored by the Lone Star Conference for his coaching efforts while at ACU as he was named to the conference’s Hall of Honor. Kittley is married to the former Linda Rhoads, and the couple has three sons, Zachary, Christopher and Jonathan.

DION MILLER

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH - 9TH SEASON - SPRINTS AND RELAYS

Dion Miller enters his ninth season as a member of the Texas Tech track and field staff. He was named to the Associate Head Coach position Aug. 13, 2012 In 2012 he coached 14 All-Americans while the women’s 4x100 relay team broke a seven-year school record with a time of 45.53. Meanwhile he also trained hurdles Jamele Mason and Shane Brathwaite who both qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. Mason was the 2012 NCAA runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a school record time of 48.89. The 2011 season added more honors to Miller’s resume. Omo Osaghae was runner-up in the 60M hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships and Big 12 Indoor Championships. Osaghae set the school record in the 60M hurdles and continued Tech’s streak of yearly hurdle All-America. The men’s 4x400M earned All-America status for the second-straight season. Bryce Brown won the Big 12 Championships in the 400M hurdles and was named All-American along with Jamele Mason. Miller was named Mountain Regional Assistant Coach of the Year for the outdoor season. Four men hurdlers and LaToy Williams (400M) competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships under Miller. The sprints and hurdles group reached new expectations during the 2010 seasons. Conference championships came in the 600Y by LaToy Williams and Bryce Brown in the 400M hurdles. A

total of 21 All-American honors were collected under Miller’s tutelage with the women’s 4x100M relay earning the program’s first All-American honor. Brown (400M hurdles), Jamele Mason (400M hurdles) and Omo Osaghae 60M hurdles) added three All-American honors to the rich history of Texas Tech hurdlers. The success of the sprints and hurdles group has continued to grow at Texas Tech under Miller, who was named the 2009 NCAA Division I Indoor and Outdoor Mountain Regional Coach of the Year for the second-straight year. Gil Roberts and Omo Osaghae took home two Big 12 titles and three All-American honors between the two under Miller. Roberts won the indoor and outdoor 400M conference titles and finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The indoor and outdoor 4x400m relays earned All-American status and bring back a majority of the runners from both squads. In 2008 Coach Miller also coached 2008 Olympic 4x400 Silver medalist Andrae Williams of the Bahamas and Indoor 2008 World Champion 4x400m Gold Medalist Greg Nixon of the United States. Miller earned his degree in exercise and sport science from Texas Tech University in 1998 where he was an All-American. He also captured 13 all-conference honors for the Red Raiders. An eight-time NCAA qualifier for TTU, Miller also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in 1996 in both the 100m and 200m events.

CLIFF FELKINS

ASSISTANT COACH - 13TH SEASON - THROWS

Cliff Felkins is in his 13th season at Texas Tech, coaching throwing events for the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders as well as coordinating the team’s strength and conditioning program. Felkins’ most recent accomplishments include coaching Kole Weldon to an NCAA runner-up performance in the shot put at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. Weldon in just his sophomore campaign rewrote the school record books during the 2013 indoor season and currently owns each of the top-five marks. Meanwhile, Felkins was also the architect of both Julian Wruck and D’Andra Carter’s NCAA titles in the outdoor discus throw. Wruck won the NCAA Outdoor Discus title in 2011, while Carter captured the NCAA Championship in 2009. In 2012 Felkins was named the Mountain Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the indoor season. Felkins helped to guide Kelly Closse to back-to-back Big 12 Championships in the indoor weight throw from 2011-12. Meanwhile, Ifeatu Okafor established herself as one of the top throwers in the conference under Felkins’, capturing the Big 12 outdoor shot put title in 2011 before earning All-America First team honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

TEXAS TECH TRACK AND FIELD

Felkins guided D’Andra Carter to the 2009 NCAA discus national title, two All-American honors and back-to-back Big 12 titles. Meanwhile, Patience Knight earned three All-American honors and won two-straight indoor and outdoor shot put Big 12 Championships under Felkins tutelage. Harrison Benjamin added to Felkins list as he won the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Championship in shot put. Before arriving at Texas Tech, Felkins was a member of Wes Kittley’s staff at Abilene Christian, where he coached the team’s throwers and served as the strength coach for both the men’s and women’s intercollegiate programs. He joined the ACU staff in 1992 and lifted the throwers to unprecedented heights. During his tenure, Felkins coached the Wildcat throwers to 36 AllAmerican performances, five national championships, four Olympic trials and one Olympian. The fall of 1986 led Felkins to ACU where he quickly became the most dominate weight thrower in Division II history. In his two years at ACU, he won five individual National Championships in both the hammer and discus. In 1987, Felkins became the first and only Division II field event athlete to win a Division I national title, forcing the Division I coaches to change the rules, banning Division II athletes from competing at the Division I Championships. Felkins competed at Olympic trials, Olympic festivals and U.S. National Championships before retiring in 1996. Felkins was also inducted into the NCAA Hall of Fame for his collegiate accomplishments.

VICTOR HOUSTON

ASSISTANT COACH - 2ND SEASON - HORIZONTAL JUMPS

Two-time Olympian Victor Houston enters his second year of coaching long jump, triple jump and women’s combined events at Texas Tech. During just his first year with the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders, Houston was pivotal in the development of Bryce Lamb who finished third at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He also oversaw the development of freshman triple jumper Avril McGhee who jumped onto the scene scoring points at both the Big 12 indoor and outdoor championships. McGhee finished fourth at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships – the highest of any freshman in the conference. She was the only freshman to finish in the top five in the triple jump at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. Houston, a Barbados native, comes to Texas Tech from Alabama where he coached jumps, throws and multi-events. He had student-athletes qualify six times for the NCAA Championships and walk-on Michael Hughes broke the Alabama school record in the heptathlon. During his time at Alabama, eight top 10 marks in Alabama history were set. JON MURRAY

ASSISTANT COACH/HEAD CROSS COUNTRY COACH - 8TH SEASON - DISTANCE

Jon Murray enters his eighth season as an assistant track and field coach and head cross country coach. Under his guidance the distance running program at Texas Tech has reached a pinnacle amongst the Big 12 while consistently contending on the national level as well. Murray has coached two athletes to individual NCAA Championships during his tenure in Lubbock while guiding the Lady Raider program to three consecutive Big 12 Championships from 2008-10. Most recently, Kennedy Kithuka became the first Red Raider in school history to capture an individual Big 12 Championship before winning the NCAA Championship in the midst of a perfect season. Kithuka was named the NCAA Male Athlete of the year after winning seven consecutive meets during the 2012 season. Kithuka went on to win Big 12 Championships in the 3,000-meter run and 5,000-meter run before becoming the first Red Raider to win a national championship in the 5,000-meter run at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.

The 2009 season for Murray was one of his best at Texas Tech. Sally Kipyego won her ninth NCAA title in the indoor 5000M becoming only the second female in NCAA history to win nine individual titles. The success was shared at the Big 12 Indoor Championships as the distance medley relay and Lillian Badaru brought home titles. Kipyego became the most decorated athlete in the Big 12 as she won her 14th Big 12 title. The cross country squad continued a banner year for Murray as it successfully defended its Big 12 title and finished its best ever at the national meet. The fourth place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships marks the first time the program has brought back a trophy. During the 2008 season new heights were reached by Murray’s cross country and track runners. The 2008 women’s cross country squad won the program’s first Big 12 and Mountain Regional Championship. He coached Sally Kipyego to her third-straight NCAA, Mountain Regional and Big 12 Champion. She also was honored for the third-straight time as the Honda Award winner for cross country.
