I

n the first season under head coach Billy Gillispie, the Texas Tech men’s basketball team went 8-23 overall and finished 1-17 in the Big 12 conference with a 10th place finish in the league standings. The Red Raiders went 7-5 during their non-conference schedule with wins over Troy, North Texas and Stephen F. Austin to open the season. Following a road win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Tech won non-conference contests over Grambling State, Cal State-Bakersfield and Southeastern Louisiana. Texas Tech concluded its season in the Big 12 Championships (Kansas City, Mo.) where they suffered a 76-60 loss to Oklahoma State. Overall it marked the Red Raiders 16th appearance at the league tournament. The Red Raiders claimed their lone conference victory against Oklahoma (65-47) at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock. Senior Robert Lewandowski (Exercise and Sport Sciences) played his fourth and final season for the Red

Raiders while being Tech’s only representative on the Academic All-Big 12 first team. Texas Tech junior Jaye Crockett (University Studies) was named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team. Jordan Tolbert had a breakthrough campaign during his first collegiate season while leading the team in scoring (11.5 ppg.), field goals (126), field goal percentage (.521), free throws made (105), rebounding (5.7 rpg.) and points scored (357). Tolbert’s point total places him fifth in school history among all freshmen. His 177 rebounds rank fourth all-time at Tech by a freshman and his .521 field-goal percentage is the fifth best by a Texas Tech freshman in school history. Tech fielded the youngest roster in the Big 12 Conference during the 2011-2012 season while seven freshmen and three sophomores gave the Red Raiders one of the youngest rosters in the entire country.
