INTRODUCTION This year we are celebrating the Hergé Museum’s second birthday, which takes place on the same day as Hergé’s birthday — 22 May. The creator of Tintin, Georges Remi, was born on this date in 1907: we will be celebrating his 104th birthday! Festivities will take place over Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May 2011. Numerous public events are scheduled:

• The seventh Tintin Flea Market will be held near the Hergé Museum;

• An exhibition of the most important pieces up for sale in the Rops Hergé auction (to be held in Namur on 22 May) will take place in the Fondation Wallonne;

• Philippe Goddin will be on hand to sign the first copies of the seventh and final volume of Hergé, chronologie d’une œuvre, at the Hergé Museum shop;

• A film festival showcasing the Sur les traces de Tintin documentaries will take place in the Cinéscope movie theatre, Louvain-laNeuve.

• A meeting with Christian de Portzamparc, architect of the Hergé Museum, to mark the publication of a book about the conception and creation of the Museum. The full programme of events is available at the end of this press pack. The Marlinspike Prize Band will liven up the streets of Louvainla-Neuve and real-life cars from The Adventures of Tintin will be on display in the Parc de la Source. A Tintin competition will take place at the Esplanade shopping centre from Monday 2 May to Sunday 8 May.

The Tintin Flea Market The first-ever Tintin Flea Market took place in July 2005, to celebrate the Tintin Festival in Brussels. For five consecutive years the market has been held on the Place du Jeu de Balle, which is better known to locals as the ‘Vieux Marché’ (Old Market), the same Brussels square where Tintin discovers the model of Sir Francis Haddock’s ship, the Unicorn, in The Secret of the Unicorn. The events have been very popular, drawing thousands of Tintin fans from all over the world. For the sixth Flea Market the organisers decided to try a different location. The event took place on 17 July 2010 just outside the Hergé Museum, which allowed visitors and fans to enjoy the event in the proximity of a magical venue dedicated entirely to the author of Tintin. The seventh Tintin Flea Market will be held at the same place, next to the Hergé Museum. The 2011 Tintin Flea Market is being organised with the assistance of the Ottignies and Louvain-laNeuve authorities, and the not-for-profit organisation Gestion Centre Ville de Louvain-la-Neuve, as well as with the University of Louvain. The market will take place on Saturday 21 May from 11 am to 5 pm.

Rules for market stalls ONLY second-hand objects (books, toys, publications, posters, figurines, games, documents, etc.) related to the work of Hergé, are allowed. EXCLUDED: all Important objects (pirate editions, fakes, copies, etc.) that constitute an infringement of copyright, for example use of the work of Hergé that is not authorised by the copyright holder Moulinsart SA or by copyright law.

In May 2009, Rops Auctioneers in Namur ( Belgium ) worked together with Moulinsart to organise the first Hergé sale, entirely dedicated to the work of the creator of the world’s most famous reporter, Tintin. The event was widely covered in the international press. The extraordinary success of the auction was partly down to the high quality of the lots for sale: unique original plates of Hergé’s work, signed rare books and a huge variety of collectable objects. Almost all the lots were sold: 94% of items found a purchaser. This year, Rops Auctioneers are arranging their second Hergé sale, comprising 500 lots. It will take place in Namur at 1 pm on 22 May. The organisers have arranged for some of the lots to be exhibited in Louvain-la-Neuve on Saturday 21 May. Some of the best items will be on display in the hall of the Fondation Wallonne, from 11 am to 5 pm.

Created by Hergé in Indian ink and gouache, this drawing—which served as the cover illustration for the last Le Petit Vingtième issue of 1937—celebrates the upcoming New Year and depicts all the main characters from Hergé’s stories on board a ship with a hull shaped as the number 1938. The characters portrayed are : Tintin, Snowy, Quick, Flupke, Police Officer 15, Jo, Zette and Jocko. The drawing is signed by Hergé in the lower right hand corner. A copy of the issue of Le Petit Vingtième is included in the lot. Over the last twenty years no more than fifteen original cover illustrations for Le Petit Vingtième have been sold at auction. Launch of the seventh volume of Philippe Goddin’s Hergé, Chronologie d’une Œuvre Hergé, chronologie d’une œuvre tome 7, 1958-1983 The history behind the work Volume 7 of the Hergé, chronologie d’une œuvre series will be published on 22 May. This is the last volume in the prestigious series published by Éditions Moulinsart. The series is the closest thing possible to a portable museum: a detailed examination of the art and career of one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century. Readers are led to discover the abundant and multi-facetted work of Hergé in all its glory, as well as the wider context in which this work was created and the daily routine of the artist himself. For the author, Philippe Goddin, the launch of the seventh and final volume brings to a close twelve years of intense research and work. The seventh Chronologie focuses on the last four Adventures of Tintin: Tintin in Tibet, The Castafiore Emerald, Flight 714 and Tintin and the Picaros. It comprises numerous illustrations, unpublished archive material and rare sketches. Beyond the personal crisis that it reflects, the story of Tintin in Tibet (19581959) is a veritable testament to friendship. This story also marks a slowing down in Hergé’s output. The author now took more time over the creation of his stories and found his own rhythm. He gave himself more time for his passions of art collecting and painting. Very much in touch with the contemporary modern art world, Hergé created roughly 35 of his own paintings, a significant number of which figure in Mr Goddin’s latest work. The aborted adventure Tintin and the Thermozéro, began in 1959, made way for The Castafiore Emerald (1960-1962). The scenario for Tintin et les Bigotudos followed, but work on this story was interrupted by the reworking of The Black Island. Next came Flight 714 (1965-1967) and then Tintin and the Picaros (1968-1975). For his next story Hergé explored several different ideas. Originally set in an airport, the new story became Tintin and Alph-Art, a story set against the backdrop of the modern art world. Unfortunately this story—that would have allowed Hergé to merge his favourite pastime with his work— remained unfinished. Weakened by illness, Hergé was forced to abandon the story before his death in 1983.

The author Born in Brussels in 1944, Philippe Goddin defines himself as a ‘Hergéologist’! He is considered to be one of the leading specialists on the life and work of Hergé. An artist and teacher, Mr Goddin had the chance to meet Hergé personally. As secretary of the Hergé Foundation for ten years, he also benefited from first-hand access to Hergé’s archives, which proved very useful while undertaking the immense task of writing the Chronologie series. Mr Goddin has also published several other works about the creator of Tintin and his universe, a universe that he has spent 35 years studying with passion. Philippe Goddin is the author of the biography Hergé — Lignes de Vie, published in 2007.

The Louvain-la-Neuve Cinéscope movie theatre will screen the Sur les traces de Tintin documentaries on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May. These films offer a fresh perspective on The Adventures of Tintin. They are a totally original way to discover or rediscover the classic Tintin stories and to find out more about the author Hergé. SYNOPSIS Tintin and Snowy stumble across a police investigation underway in Brussels, revolving around the mystery of a drowned man. Tintin sets off on new adventures that see the little reporter travel to the exotic country of Morocco, hot on the trail of a gang of opium smugglers. This adventure is the backdrop for the first meeting between Tintin and Captain Haddock, who remains by Tintin’s side for the rest of his adventures! The Far East - The Blue Lotus The Blue Lotus is the sequel to Cigars of the Pharaoh. While Tintin is in India taking a well-earned rest he is drawn into a dangerous mystery revolving around a madness-inducing poison. The little reporter travels to Shanghai and, against the backdrop of the Sino-Japanese conflict, sets to work unravelling a nefarious web of opium traffickers. A key relationship is forged as Hergé reflects his real-life meeting with the sculptor and artist Chang Chong-chen, who taught the author of Tintin about Eastern philosophy and would become a life-long friend. Peru - Prisoners of the Sun Following the kidnapping of Professor Calculus in The Seven Crystal Balls, Tintin travels to Peru. With his trusty companions the little reporter passes through Andean villages and over snow-capped mountains, dodging the dangers of the Amazonian rainforest before managing to find the Temple of the Sun. Hergé crafted a classic and mature adventure story full of archaeological discoveries. The author was at the peak of his artistic capabilities and was passionate about travel stories, deriving immense pleasure from helping his readers to discover great civilisations and lost worlds. Nepal - Tintin in Tibet Tintin decides to go and search for Chang, who has disappeared following an aeroplane crash in Nepal. With faithful friends Captain Haddock and Snowy, Tintin sets off on merciless trek through the Himalayas. This is a particularly interesting book within the Hergé canon as it was written 25 years after the author’s meeting with Chang Chong-chen. Hergé had lost all trace of his friend since World War II, and transposed his hope to meet Chang again to Tintin in Tibet. This Tintin story is unique in that there are no baddies or car chases: the narrative is kept bare and essential. Tintin in Tibet was Hergé’s favourite book, and was probably the most personal adventure for the author.

Hot on the trail of opium smugglers, Tintin sets off across Egypt (Port Said, Cairo, the Pyramids and the Red Sea) and India. While searching for ancient pharaohs and making friends with elephants, the little reporter narrowly avoids falling victim to the poison of madness, meets an eccentric archaeologist and saves a maharaja from a killer tiger… pure excitement from start to finish! This action-packed story was one of Hergé’s first, and when it was published as Cigars of the Pharaoh (in 1934) the author was 27 years old.
