11 MENTAL PREP TECHNIQUES FOR TRIATHLETES

On race day, it's often the competitor with the stronger mental approach that reaches his or her goals and dreams. You have the power to train your mind as you train your muscles, and it takes observation, practice and a desire to change what is not working. What are the messages you tell yourself? Are they positive and helpful or negative and detrimental? How can you change that message and change your performance? Whether your goals are to finish first or "not finish last", the following tips are applicable to all levels of triathletes.

Goal setting and Achievement Whatever your goals, set them for the short and long term: daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. Write them down and revisit them often. The goals you set begin the visualization process, so remind yourself how much you want them and how hard you're willing to work to achieve them. Once you've written down your goals, go back and make sure you have both process (ex: focusing on a strong arm pull in the swim) and outcome (specific finish places, times or qualification) goals.

You Have the Power to Choose Your Thoughts Many athletes wrongly assume that the mental aspect of performance is innate and unchangeable. In reality, systematic mental training can have a similar impact on performance as physical workouts do. Choosing your thoughts and attitudes can make or break your race experience and result. When negative, powerless thoughts arise, simply flip the switch.

Train Your Brain as You Train Your Muscles Triathlon is a sport of repetitive motion. On the swim, bike and run, you repeat the same motion over and over again, and it takes millions of these repetitions to improve. The

same concept applies to mental skills acquisition. The more you practice, the more you strengthen your mind and attitude.

Be Courageous "I was afraid, but I did it anyway." We all face fears. It's up to you if the fear wins or if your dreams and goals win on race day.

Control You may not be able to control what confronts or challenges you on race day, but by training the mind, you can control your reaction to those variables. Uncertainty is a common anxiety trigger and is inherent in all triathlons. The one thing you can control is your own preparation, so this should have your full attention and focus. By developing consistent routines and ways of coping with distractions, uncertainty can be reduced and you are less likely to be negatively impacted by external factors.

Refocus Distractions occur constantly at the race site: friends, family, environmental conditions, lastminute course changes, delays, irrelevant or unhelpful thoughts, coaches, teammates, opponents' comments, etc. Learn to clear your mind, remove yourself from these distractions and refocus on your tasks and routines. In the pre-race timeframe, days or hours before the race, triathletes become excited and nervous as the body readies itself for competition. The key to achieving an appropriate mindset is to analyze the changes in your mood state and channel your emotions in a positive direction. Practicing this on a regular basis creates a new

ing for your performance.

Visualize yourself performing well, bringing up images of when you had a good race, workout performance or goal achievement process. Challenge the belief that emotions and mood states are simply reactions to external events. You have considerable control in this area. Simple acts such as changing your location or listening to music can help you control your response to stress triggers. Everyone has their own coping responses, whether it's calming or stimulating. The key is to find coping responses that are automated and can be consistently applied in changing circumstances. More: Eight of the Best Core Exercises for Triathletes

Specific Mental Preparation Routines and Visualization Rehearse in your mind what you are going to do during an event--what could happen during a race and how you would deal with any challenges that come up. Use imagery, a form of visualization that includes an all-sensory experience. Imagery is a powerful technique because the brain interprets the imagined scenarios very literally and can therefore positively influence your confidence and execution.

Positivity Positive self-talk, positive thinking and positive selfstatements (affirmations or mantras) have a strong impact on physical performance. An affirmation such as "I have trained hard and am in great shape," or "I have prepared to the best of my ability" work by occupying our attention and then changing our belief system over time. We begin to focus our attention on events that reinforce our belief system

The Day I Ran In(to) the Cuba Triathlon National Championships By Brian JP McWilliams On May 31 of this year, I was in Havana, Cuba, doing some medical work for USA Track & Field. I decided to go out for a morning run before it got too warm. It was already pushing 90 degrees at 9 a.m. We were staying at the nice hotel called the Melia Habana along the Atlantic Ocean and on my return I decided to take a slightly different path back along the ocean. I came across some orange cones along with a police officer blocking off a road. I was thinking 'there must be a parade this morning.' As I was running on the sidewalk, I saw some bikes coming toward me. My thoughts now switch to 'it must be a cycling race.' As the cyclists pass me, I noticed that some of the bikes had aerobars. “Ah ha,” I have come upon a local triathlon. I continued to run on the sidewalk as more triathletes pass. These athletes didn’t have any bar end shifters or disc wheels, but they were moving at a good pace. I saw more and more triathletes, most on older bikes that I couldn’t see any labels or names and several old bike helmets that I’m not sure I would let my kids wear for riding around the block. I continue to run along the road and the lead group of triathletes passes me again and then once more. I’m hoping this was a draft legal race, or else there was going to be a lot of time in the penalty tent. As I was getting closer to my hotel, I saw the triathletes making a complete turn at a roundabout and coming back in my direction. I came up to the roundabout and there were two race officials in the center. When there was a break in the action, I asked one of the officials about the race. He spoke English very well and told me “This is Cuba National Championship.”

So I stayed in the inner circle of the roundabout watching the race, gathering as much information as possible from the race officials, and cheering on the athletes with my limited Spanish. My attempts at motivational sayings were “muy bien” and “mucho rapido.” This is the result of two years of high school Spanish I took almost 20 years ago. Miss G would not be proud. At least I haven’t forgotten important words like gracios, banos, and cerveza. I discovered it was an Olympic distance race which they had to do nine loops down and backs on the road along the ocean and then had to run a down and back course four times on that same road. I have to say it was not the most challenging or interesting course. They asked me if I did triathlons and were I lived as I was sporting my Ironman visor. I stated I was from Wisconsin, and I had a half ironman race coming up in a couple weeks in Kansas. The official was writing the numbers down on a sheet of paper as the riders went past. I am guessing there where about 50-60 racers that day and ages ranging between 15-40 years of age. I eventually asked where the transition area was and they pointed me toward the Copa Cabana about three quarters of a mile down the road. I started jogging back towards the Copa Cabana to see if I could find the transition area and wondered how I missed it in the first place. I found the Copa Cabana and found an archway leading to an opening in a gate. I saw a DJ playing and you could see the beach. Then some large Cu-

ban men come walking my way. This was definitely not the transition area and it appears I was not welcome in this part of the Copa Cabana. I went back to the road and continued to walk up the road. I asked a teenager on a road bike if he knew where the transition area was. He didn’t speak any English and my charades of biking and then running didn’t get me any answers. So I again decide to keep moving up the road and I found a small water station. They obviously must know where the transition area is located. These teenage girls didn’t understand or speak English and I must really suck at charades, or maybe they thought I was having a seizure. I looked a little further up the road and saw three small cones on the side of the road. Bingo, I found the holy grail, the transition area. But like in the Indiana Jones movie, it was nothing like you’d think. It was in a small opening in what looked like an old building that no longer had a roof on it anymore. I gathered around the 20 or so people watching the race. I was the only one clapping and cheering on the triathletes as they biked and eventually transitioned to running. I asked if this was the finish line and I got a "si." There were no banners, sponsors, finish line chutes, timing mats or any indication this was the finish line besides two people holding stopwatches. I had to return to the hotel, so I started running back as most of the triathletes were on the run portion of the race. I was thinking how fortunate I am to live in the United States where we have local races that have tons more amenities then the National Championships in Cuba. We get technical T -shirts, free swag, timing chips, post race meals, and almost instant race results. I

tried to search the Internet for any info or results on the race, but found none. These Cuban triathletes didn’t have the latest gear or even gear that was new 10 years ago, but they had a passion for the sport. This experience made me appreciate how lucky I am to have all this triathlon gear and the level of competition in local/area races all the way up to our elite American triathletes. But most of all it made me proud to be a triathlete and an American. The American part was wavered on the trip home, as a TSA agent in Houston ripped up 25 perfectly good Cuban cigars, and dumped a 9-year-old bottle of Cuban rum down the drain, but that’s a story for another time.
