THE

ROAD TO RECOVERY

This is a story about inspiration, self-discovery, determination, and a light at the end of a very long tunnel, but most importantly, this is a story about not giving up when the tough gets going.

They say that life can be hard and unfortunately, Brandi knows that all too well. Born in New Rochelle, New York on December 3, 1980, she had two holes in her heart and doctors spoke on a very bleak outlook for the newborn. Thankfully by age 2, the holes in her heart had fully closed and she was told that she would live a “normal” life. Though it would have been lovely if Brandi’s hardships ended there, unfortunately, they were only just beginning.

took her to the doctor. Although it was thought initially that the cough would diminish, it did not and as a result, she had to be home schooled by the time she reached the 9th grade due to the fear of her possibly spreading the illness.

Brandi’s doctors had no idea of what was causing her illness so they ran numerous tests on her, and officially diagnosed her with Tuberculosis, Cancer, and numerous other diseases. Unfortunately, after what seemed to be a million tests, it was found that the doctors had misdiagnosed Brandi and as a result caused her to travel down a long road towards self-discovery.

tors, and being home schooled, she had no idea of what was going on in her life, or even what it all meant, but thankfully she had her family there to support her.

At age 11, Brandi developed a severe case of whooping cough that was extremely loud and often times annoyed anyone that was in ear shot. The coughing became worse, to the point where Brandi would spit up blood. Searching for answers and a cure, her mother

From the time that she was 11 to the time she was 14 she visited so many doctors that both she and her family lost count. And by the age of 14, Brandi was taking more medications than most adults have to take in their lifetime. Sadly, Brandi was robbed of her childhood, having to down dozens of medications, visiting several doc-

At this point, everything was crazy, “I was hypnotized because they thought that it would stop my cough but it didn’t. I also underwent acupuncture as well and it didn’t work. I guess you can say I’ve been sick all my life.” On December 14 of 2004 Brandi had an open lung biopsy surgery in order to drain the fluid from her lungs because she was diagnosed with Hemosiderosis. Hemosiderosis is a rare condition in which too much iron is present in certain organs, most commonly in the lungs; the seriousness of this disease is dependent on how much iron is present. In the most severe cases, Hemosiderosis can cause major damage. During this operation, Brandi technically died on the operating table; however, the

Having been misdiagnosed several times Brandi continued her search of finding out what her illnesses were. After having a stroke, Brandi lost the ability to move her left side. She vowed to walk again.

Brandi joined the New York Sports Club owned by Marcus Swan and underwent vigourous physical thearpy. She fought through the pain and promised she would walk again by June 2013.

aide left her unattended for over 2 hours, after she passed out. And the result of her having both a seizure and stroke was devastating. Brandi was not able to walk at all, and on January 7, 2013 Brandi almost died after having an asthma attack resulting from pneumonia. At this point, it was one thing after another.

WALKING AGAIN

W

ith a lifetime of hospital visits, operations, and diagnoses, her family became desensitized to her illnesses and allowed them to become the new normal, focusing less on what they could do to help Brandi. The culmination of years of illness became too much for her to handle, and for a short period of time, she began to accept her existence. Her mind constantly replayed the time an older doctor told her “Get used to being in a wheelchair because you will be in it forever.” The life that she is forced to live is one that most people will fortunately not have to deal with so the word “strong” does not come close to describing Brandi. “I don’t want to feel sorry for myself. I want to get up and show everyone what you can do when you have that mindset to just keep going.”

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

octors failed to notify her mother or any other family members. In her 32 years Brandi has had 3 strokes and the one that she suffered in 2007 was the start of one of her greatest downfalls. She lay in the hospital bed, the day after she’d been on the operating table. Brandi could not see, speak, walk, or anything and because the doctor failed to check on her in a reasonable amount of time, the result was a severe stroke that left her without movement on the left side of her body. In order to get around, Brandi, with the help of a crutch, would often hop on her right leg in order to get around. I asked Brandi if she was ever able to find out what caused these seizures that she suffers from and her response was utterly heartbreaking. “When I went to the doctor for my seizures, he put me on medications and told me to double up on them but never stopped to check my prolactin and serum levels of phenytoin and valproate beforehand and because of this, I started having strokes.

S

he has been to the hospitals so much in her life that every doctor, nurse, aide, and technician knows her name. But again, it does not end there, in 2013, Brandi had her third stroke after her nurse’s

S

lowly Brandi began picking up the pieces and focusing on what matters the most in life: living and walking again. After having both a stroke and seizure and being unable to walk at all, Brandi joined New York Sports Club, and began a vigorous training routine on her journey to walk again. Her goal? To walk again by the end of June just in time for pride festivities. The last time that Brandi was able to attend pride was in 2010, but due to her illnesses, she had to leave not too soon after she arrived. Her left leg hasn’t touched the ground since 2008 but that all will change soon. No matter how painful and tedious her workout sessions are, she refuses to give up, “My motivation is that I want to prove everyone wrong, especially the doctors that said I’d never walk again… I will walk again I promise you that if anything that is my goal.” During many of her sessions at the gym, although it’s extremely painful, she asks her trainer Sean to stretch her legs. At this point she’s willing to endure any amount of pain if it means that she will walk again and she vows to never give up. There are no words to express how inspirational Brandi’s story is. If she can wake up every day and fight hard to reach her goals, everyone can! When I asked Brandi why she wanted to share her story, she told me “With faith and determination anyone can do anything.” Now those are some great words for the soul!

ith beating her expected date of walking again by almost two months, we are sure that there will be even more pictures of Brandi to come! We want to send out our special thanks to Brandi, Marcus Swan, Sean, and the New York Sports Club.

A New Day After multiple diagnoses, after years of operations and several tests, her doctors told her that she would never walk again , they insisted that she would be wheelchair bound for the rest of her life. They even advised her to get used to accpeting her current cirumstance, but Brandi refused. She woke up day after day with one thing on her mind, walking again. After joining the New York Sports Club in New Rochelle, New York, Brandi worked hard nearly everyday on one machine after another. She endured the pain, the

sweat, the blood and the tears everyday of her life so that one day she’d be able to walk again. She gave herself until the end of June to get there but on May 2, 2013 she surprised everyone and took her first step after not being able to walk since 2007!

JUICEBOX

America’s Favorite Stud Exotic Entertainer

Who is Juicebox? Is she a lone dancer? Entertainer? The answer is none of the above. “Juicebox is...hmmm. I don’t know who Juicebox is.” That answer was all it took for us to set out to discover who JB really is.

E

veryone knows Juicebox (JB), or at least they think that they do. I had the awesome opportunity to sit down with this focused and driven young woman as she opened up about various parts of her life. We talked a little bit about everything and after everything was said and done, one thing was for certain: Juicebox is as focused as ever and she’s just getting started! Rewind back to several years ago. Picture a hyped crowd at a popular club. The music is bumping, the crowd is swaying and the lights are dancing to the beat, it’s the perfect set up right? here sat JB and her best friend J. Graham kickin’ back at the club, when randomly J. Graham dared her to perform a show right there on the spot. Never one to back down from a challenge, JB gladly accepted. She headed out to the dance floor, glanced around and then got down to Pu**y Money Weed. Once her impromptu performance was finished, she again looked around the club and found herself pleasantly surprised by all of the mesmerized looks she was receiving.

THE KEY TO SUCCESS

HUSTLE HARD

Juicebox never mixes business with pleasure. She keeps her personal business, personal!

Juicebox is a one of a kind entertainer that hustles hard to get to where she wants to be. She doesn’t allow the hype to go to her head but instead maintains focus!

The road to stardom! That same evening the club owner, completely wowed by her performance asked if she had ever thought about dancing. Being that she was a full-time student in college, the idea had never really crossed her mind before. However, that night, something clicked and she decided to take up dancing and well, the rest is history. She stands tall recognized as American’s favorite entertainer! Juicebox was born in the Philippines, and shortly after moved with her family to San Diego, California where she spent the majority of her childhood. Although she had lived in San Diego for quite some time, much of her adolescence was spent in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area. Years later once she graduated from high school, it was decided that she would move to Texas in order to attend college and obtain her degree. She’s been living there ever since. JB first began to dance on January 1st, 2009 and realized that she found such joy and pleasure in knowing that her sensual and engaging moves made women go crazy all over the world. “I like leaving a show knowing I made an impact of someone whether it is big or small.”

Domestic Violence F

or some unknown reason, it has become widely believed that domestic violence does not impact the LGBT community. You may very well be an individual that believes that domestic violence in gay and lesbian relationships is nonexistent; however, recent studies have shown that there are upwards of 11% of lesbian women that have been physically assaulted by another lesbian woman and 23% of gay males that have faced the same circumstance. The National Coalition against Domestic Violence reported in 2006, that there were 3,524 incidents of domestic violence in the LGBT community in ten cities and two states alone. The victimization rates steadily increase while the issue lacks the awareness that should be present. Unfortunately, it has been estimated that approximately 50% of the lesbian population has experienced or will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes. Sadly, many have come to believe that domestic violence only consists of physical acts towards an individual; however, that is not the case. Domestic violence can be in the form of physical,

mental, or emotional abuse and often times leaves the abused partner feeling alone, guilty, and believing that help is not available to them. How do we handle the subject of domestic violence? For one, we stop sweeping it under the rug hoping that one day it will no longer exist. We face it head on and lend our support whenever possible. Unfortunately, many individuals downplay the impact of domestic violence and in turn fuel the fire. If you are a victim of domestic violence, please know that there is help available to you and that you are not alone. The first step is always the hardest, but once you come to the realization that you are in an unhealthy abusive relationship, you can no longer accept it, but must take the steps needed to remove yourself from the situation. No longer accept the empty apologies from your partner or their numerous claims of change. Stay with a friend, talk to a parent or domestic violence group, but most importantly, leave. MATURE Generation

with Linda ARTICLE BY De’Onca

Linda The lovely Linda sat down with us and let us know how she really feels about generational differences. Check it out!

Typically in America when the lives of gay’s & lesbians are in the spotlight, our minds tend to drift to the younger generations, but what about those 35+? We had the pleasure of sitting down with Linda Gray, a seasoned lesbian living in Cleveland, Ohio. A quite enjoyable and informative interview, Linda placed the spotlight onto the lives of older lesbians that are so often ignored in the mainstream. Throughout the years Linda has come to realize that life is nothing but a constant transition. Wants, needs, and goals change as you become older and there are other aspects that come into play as well. How does growing older play a part in your dating life as far as the LGBT community is concerned?

Becoming Older... When you become older there are other aspect of life that come into play, some of those are health issues.

The crowd now-a-days is so young and so different that most times the older people do not want to come out to enjoy themselves. When you go out now, all you see is drama and a lack of respect. People who want to be respected can’t enjoy themselves in an environment like this. Besides going out, getting older plays a big role in my dating life because the older I have gotten, health issues are more present. My health issues are another problem on their own because you have to find someone that is mature enough to be able to handle them. On the flip side, dating someone that may have multiple health issues can be problematic as well. Tell us something that is harder now, than it was before when you were younger. There aren’t many people to choose from and promiscuity runs rampant, so in other words, it’s slim pickings because promiscuity seems to be the new fad.

Dating... Most older people do not have time for games, they want the real thing! But because of this, the dating game is harder now.

21

What is the biggest difference with dating between the younger and older generations? Older people have less tolerance for the games whereas the younger generations are just trying to get to this level. They don’t tend to focus on the long-term anymore but get lost in the here & now. They focus on looks and materialism when they need to focus on the stuff that truly matters.

MAY 2013

& Q

A

Are there differences between what a 20 something may look for in a partner than what you personally look for in a partner? Some of the things that I look for are similar to what I think any lesbian would look for in a relationship; however, some things do differ. I look for loyalty, they have to be a go getter, they must be thoughtful, honest, and into romance. Most importantly, they must know their place in the relationship. If they know their place in the relationship, we should get along just fine. But even more important than that, my partner MUST have a strong relationship with God. What is your idea of a great date and how does it differ from younger generations? Not to be cliché or anything, but I enjoy going to the movies, boat rides at night, walks, cuddles, and even a day at home on a rainy day can be nice…you know, stay in cook a good meal with some movies or board games. I don’t think that my idea of a great date differs much from younger generations, but I like quiet dates because I want to get to know who I am talking to and I can’t do that at a club.

...Generational Differences There are many generational differences, the main one is the fact that the younger people forger what matters.

links: Facebook: Linda Shediva

What is something that you would like the younger generations to know about getting older in the LGBT community? I just wish that I could bring back the actual art of dating. Times when you got to know a person before you just jumped in to bed with them. Times when there were ladies and gentlemen doing adult things in respectable fashions. There is more to dating and love than having fun, going out, and drama. You have to savor the moment; truly get to know the person you are dealing with; see if you have something in common with them. You have to respect yourself and when you’re jumping into bed with the first thing you see…that is not respect or love. Getting older isn’t easy because you can’t plan for. Life just happens, but being a lesbian at my age is as enjoyable as it was then, but we need to get back to the basics as a community!

...Advice Respect yourself. Cliche or not, you cannot expect others to respect you if you cannot respect yourself, your body, and mind.

Come Again?!

TASHA C. MILLER Stud on Stud? Cool… But Leave Me Out of It.

ast week I was having a quiet lunch hour alone at a local vegan spot just a few minutes from my job. As soon as I emerged from the restaurant and placed my foot down on West 4th Street. (For those who know NYC, just around the corner from the basketball courts in the Village.) I ran right smack into this stud. Literally her breasts pushed in to my stomach and I threw up in my mouth just a little bit. She was five inches shorter than me, probably 5’-6”, shaved head in a 6X white tee, baggy blue jeans and white Nike Air Force Ones. After we both recovered I said, “excuse me, sorry,” not really knowing or caring whose fault the collision was. (It was hers).

L

As the word, “sorry,” dragged from my lips she reached out her hand (picture this in slow motion and shit) she reaches out her hand and says. “Beautiful.” I stopped, looked down at my hand in hers like “What the …,” snatched it away and asked what was up with her. I was at full speed now but when she repeated

25

herself she was still in slow mo. “Beautiful.” She said again in her deep voice reminiscent of mine just the week before when I had a bitch of a chest cold. I was speechless, was this happening? I mean if I was feminine, ass showing, cleavage showing, if I was giving her e-verything, I would have understood and would have eaten the attention up, but who the hell was she talking to? I had on a dark gray button down shirt, under a black suit jacket, dark skinny jeans and some black wingtip Cole Haans, my locs were back in a ponytail away from my face and I had on black thick rimmed glasses. What was I wearing underneath all that? That’s not important but I bet any amount of money it was the same exact underthings, “Ole girl,” was wearing underneath her clothes. Again…I thought, Who was she talking to? Did she have a lazy eye? Was she looking at someone behind or to the side of me? I check…nope. It’s just us. Just us on this block of West 4th Street right off of 6th Ave in the middle of the

day. Really? I think to myself. We both stood there as I watched her try and think of something because I’m sure the look on my face was priceless by now and did that little throw up I had earlier from her boobs piercing my kidneys seep out of the corner of my mouth? I check the corners of my mouth with my tongue. Big mistake! “Mmmmph.” She eeked out. “What’s up? I gotta get back to work.” I say impatiently. The next words she eeked out. “My wife just kicked me out of the house.” My left eyebrow jerked upward violently, I’m sure it was thinking the same thing I was thinking. “What the hell does that have to do with me?” She continued. “So, I’m out of the house now, you know and you.” She paused for affect as she looked up at me. Did I say she was 5’-6”? I lied. Maybe 5’-4.” “And you, you are beautiful.” “Ooh. Ooh.” I laughed a deep belly laugh as my right foot turned to walk away, seemingly trying to tell me to “run bitch, damn.” As the left foot goes to join it I say, “Oh.”

And I think to myself, Why can’t I stop saying, “Oh.” Anyway I say, “Oh. I’m flattered ma but….” Followed by some dramatic hand movements that only Alvin Ailey or the Dance Theatre of Harlem could appreciate to demonstrate that what I had going on was not a match for what she had going on. She lifted her hands up in surrender and backed those massive boobs away from me allowing a cool breeze to rush in between us. “I got you.” She winked and rubbed her chin as she looked me up and down one last time. “Take care mama.” I said and walked away thinking where I could find the closest shower. “Did that just really happen?” I asked my left eyebrow that is still raised for some reason. “Please tell me she is not looking at my ass.” I chant as I walk away so much so that it becomes my mantra and I consider getting a t-shirt made with, “Please tell me she I not looking at my ass.” on it.

TEAMLESBIANS.COM

I turn slightly. She is looking at my ass! Damn, I just threw up in my mouth a little again. My gym’s slogan is “Look better naked,” and granted the squats and lunges have made my ass its own entity and perhaps to even be admired. But to be admired by femmes. Sorry, I discriminate. So studs, butches, masculine identified women however you categorize yourself, I got all the love for you in the world. Honestly I do. Not that type of horizontal love but you know love. So next time when you see me on the street. Say, “what’s up?” Say, “what’s going on playa?” Or just nod or not. But whatever you do, do not grab my hand attempt to caress it and let anything ridiculous like what Ms. My Wife Just Kicked Me Out of the House did or my left eyebrow will be forced to assault you. Don’t get me wrong, and don’t come at me all crazy. I have nothing against what other people do. Do your stud on stud, fem on fem thing to your heart’s con-

tent. That’s your business, not mine. As a matter of fact congratulations on finding love…reach for the stars, all that. But that’s not me. In the words of a beautiful femme, “If I wanted someone that looked like me I would look in the mirror and fuck myself.”

NOW INTRODUCING

TEMPER

GOING FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP. Marquita Brooks grew up on the south side of Chicago, in Roseland, an area that is often referred to as the “Wild 100’s,” to be specific. It was not always the safest area, but it was home to her nonetheless. As Marquita reflects on growing up, one particular memory comes to the front and center. She was 4 years old when she found out who her real parents were and it changed everything for her, “I always thought that my Uncle Bobby and Aunt Donna were my parents until one day my real parents came to pick me up. That’s when I learned of all of these brothers and sisters I had.” Being the second to the youngest of 10 children, her father worked extremely hard to provide for each and every one of the 10 children. It wasn’t easy for Marquita growing up, in fact, it was pretty rough. Her family was so large that often times it was hard to maintain financially. Her family was not as fortunate as most other families might have been, but as a whole, it never

27

slowed them down and it definitely never stopped her. So how did Marquita become known as the one and only Temper? “People started calling me Temper because I used to have a bad temper when I was younger.” She fell in love with music since before she could remember and as a matter of fact, she began writing music at the young age of 9. “Music is my outlet. I use music to express myself, to vacate from my reality, and to keep me out of trouble.” Music was simply the catalyst in Temper working through her anger, and realizing a better future for herself. Fortunately for Temper, and those that work with her and those that enjoy listening to her music, she has grown immensely and matured to no end. As she sits back and thinks over her younger years, she can proudly say that having a temper is no longer an issue for her.

The REAL Take on

TEMPER

GROWTH is A CONTINUOUS TRANSITION WITHIN LIFE Temper is a lyrical genius coming to us by way of Chicago. Everyone seems to know who Temper is, but very few realize where she’s been and where she’s going. We sat down with Temper while she took us along for the ride. Welcome to Temper’s world! Her very first real experience in a recording studio was at the age of 13 which coincidentally was the start of her beginning to grow as an artist. Levelground was the first group that Temper was ever with. During her time with the group, she both listened to and surrounded herself with various artists that had different views on life. Overall, the impact that this span of time had on her writing ability is immeasurable.

29

It’s no secret that the music industry is male dominated, so tell us about the hardest part of being female rapper in this industry. Being a female rapper in this male dominated industry is extremely hard. I have to work 100 times harder than them. It makes it even harder when other female rappers go against you as well. Male rappers come together and create a movement while female rappers try to outshine one another.

You may think that the popularity that surrounds Temper would be enough to cause some friction within her personal life, but fortunately for her (and possibly unfortunately for her unending number of fans) that isn’t the case. Although she’s extremely popular with the ladies, her career hasn’t had a negative

impact on her love life. We decided to ask Temper how she balances her love life with her career, and she didn’t hold back one bit. “I don’t believe it is impossible to be in a committed relationship as a rapper. I’ve been committed to my lady for 3 years. As an artist, you must build a strong foundation at home first. Your

mate should have no doubt in her mind that you love her and with her is where you want to be. Trust and communication is very powerful in relationships. Make every second with your mate count. My flesh is not that weak. You must learn to control yourself.”

Of course in other aspects of her life, a few have had issues, but none have ever voiced those issues to her directly so all in all she hasn’t encountered any real problems. On the other hand, “There were some artists from different states in the lesbian

community that felt like I haven’t earned my spot in this music industry because they were oblivious to the work I’ve put in outside of the lesbian community.” During her time in the music industry, Temper has been fortunate enough to partake in

in Chicago. The name of the radio station is Power 92. I’ve also received airtime on 107.5 WGCI as well. I don’t view downfalls as such. I see good in all of my experiences. There is no such thing as a downfall unless you allow it to be one.” Given that you have been blessed and fortunate enough to perform with artists such as Soulja Boi, B2K, Keith Murray, Talib Kweli, Kid Capri and others, where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? 5 years from now; I see myself residing in another state besides Illinois, mentoring upcoming artists, and building an empire of my own. We could write an entire magazine on Temper and still not have all the bases covered.

This talented soul has blessed the stage with many of the music industry’s greatest artist which we’d like to add, is a pretty big deal! “Ever since I start managing myself, I’ve been booked for shows in North Carolina, San Diego, Las Vegas, Ohio, Dallas, just to name a few. My biggest accomplishment so far had to be getting my record played on a huge radio station

GETTING TO KNOW JAIE ADAMS

Mala Vibez

We sat down with Jaie Adams, an artist that’s turned tragedy into triumph, here is her story! aie Adams is an artist that has learned throughout the years to pull strength from devastation. All within 2 years, Jaie lost her father, sister, job, career, and home. Most people would cave from the weight of such heavy circumstances, but somehow she found positivity from the darkest time in her life. Hailing from Mississippi, this young artist is truly one of a kind.

J

Jaie is always moved to create. Inspired by her personal feelings, her moments of creation are often an outlet. When negativity comes knocking at Jaie’s door, instead of embracing it, she picks up the pen and allows the canvas to come to life. Be it personal pain or the pain of others, she finds ways to turn it into something beautiful, something inspiring. Different artists have different forms of inspiration, but for Jaie, her artist inspiration is driven both by specific events within her life as well as those

around the world. Having had unresolved issues with her father before he passed made moving on very hard for Jaie. Never having the opportunity to “square” things away with him while he was still alive took a toll on her mentally and emotionally and momentarily kept her from finding the closure that she needed the most. However, enveloping herself within her art allowed Jaie, in many ways, to find the peace that she had been looking for. Not one to be content with the surface, Jaie has always looked for knowledge in various emotional states such as confusion, misunderstanding, and anger. “There are certain things in life we’ve been through that’s going to recycle again.” Arming herself with this knowledge allows her to process her emotions in ways that she may have not be able to before, in the case of like matters occurring again. For some artists, painting, drawing, and creating are forms of therapy; however, for Jaie that is not the

case. “My art work is more like an ending to the situation, an ending product or result of it all.” Almost a confirmation, her art work is a sign that whatever she has been going through is resolved. As for therapy, Jaie cites praying and helping other people as her most therapeutic actions, “I can be a sort of help or comfort to other people in helping them understand their own circumstances.”

Art is paramount in Jaie’s life and she can’t imagine living life without it. “I would probably go insane and literally. I don’t think it would be possible for me to cope without creating.” Being that Jaie uses both personal situations and situations of others as a driving factor behind her art, she finds comfort in sharing her craft with the world. “My work is created to inspire others with the things I have been through. Sharing my work, my story that is, with others is easy to do.” When we asked Jaie what her art and creativity stands for, her answer was resounding, “It is not enough to go from point A to point B, true completion is from point A to point Z. My work is a depiction of the “full range” effect.” Not only does she paint and draw, Jaie also writes and her fans can begin looking forward to her inspirational books for young adults and teens. She also plans to venture into the clothing line business with t-shirts and hoodies. Seeing how this young artist loves helping others and has taken her darkest moments and turned them into pure inspira-

tion, she wants those that may be going through hard times to know that they are not alone. “Keep in mind that it could always be worse… your personal situation is not the worst nor is it the end of it all for you. Stay strong, stay encouraged.” If you are interested in getting to know more about this talented artist, check out the link section of the article! For now, we leave you with some information about 2 of Jaie’s most popular pieces, At War with Ourselves and My Butterfly.

At War with Ourselves is a piece that Jaie created at a time when she was letting go of a lot of personal struggle within her life. The title came about due to the fight she had to endure in letting go of some personal baggage. In short, this piece was her personal way of releasing, letting go, and accepting her mistakes. My Butterfly in one word: serenity. Intrigued by the intricate process of becoming a butterfly, Jaie became lost in this painting. “It’s a long process but its short lived once they get their wings. The butterfly piece had to do more with my father.” With the unresolved issues that she had with her father including him being absent and lacking the support that she needed, My Butterfly became complete closure Jaie. “The take home message I have learned in all of this is to admire the beauty when it’s here because it may not last for long.”

My work is a depiction of the “full range” effect

woke up this morning and Ipopped your face was the 1st thing that into my mind… Don’t

get too excited because all it did was remind me that I deserve to be happy. I put everything into you and for everything that you knew you couldn’t give me back. It still didn’t stop you from taking everything I had to give. I feel like I’ve been stripped of my best. I’ve been robbed of my chance to give it to the person that’s going to come along and love me the way I deserve to be loved. Why do we allow love to do us this way? To fill us up with meaningless hope and cause us to dream with no limits no boundaries. Our hearts take us as far as we can go and then life and the cruelty of the people that exist in it, sends us crashing back down to reality. I love you for all the right reasons but I let you hurt and take advantage of me for all the wrong ones. That’s the fucked up thing about love. It allows your heart to forgive things that no other emotion would. I know I deserve better, I know I put more into you than you ever have into me. Yet somehow somewhere within my minds logic I think it’ll all be ok if I just love you more. So I give you a thousand percent and the thousand percent you should be giving me back you keep. So now here you sit with

why do we allow two thousand percent to my zero percent and that becomes some checks and balances for that ass. See because now I have nothing left while you get to continue on with it all. I love you but I have to find a way to let go. I have to become smarter than my heart and know more than what it knows because right now the only concept it seems to grasp is loving you. It’s now time for me to take into consideration where that leaves me because so far all I’ve ended up being is hurt and alone. I have to believe my love is worth more than that. Truth and reality go hand in hand because no matter the outcome they are real. Once you acknowledge that it will undoubtedly be the hardest slap in the face you will ever come across. I’ve been in this state with you for to long and I don’t want the worst to have to happen before I listen to God and accept the fact that our time is up. I used to be happy just loving you until I realized that you would never love me back the same and to stay would mean not loving my self at all. I woke up this morning and your face was the first thing that popped into my mind. But please don’t get too excited because all it did was remind me that I deserve to be happy.

U-HAUL

LESBIANS

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU SUFFER FROM U-HAUL TENDENCIES? U-Haul lesbian: A lesbian with tendencies of moving in with their partner in a very short period of time. You know the story. Two lesbians meet. They hit it off instantly. It’s love at first site. They have a dog and a cat. They’re in love within a week and move in together within the first month. It’s happened to all of us at one point or another (at least the falling in love part) right? But does it work? Lea DeLaria, an American comedienne, actress, and jazz musician coined the phrase “U-Haul Lesbians” in the early 1980s. The U-Haul lesbian joke suggests that lesbians move in together after only a short period of time after dating, usually after the second date.

* If after 2 or 3 dates you find yourself planning for the future, up unto what you will wear on your wedding day. *When you meet a woman and the first thing you want to talk about is how your girlfriend kicked you out of the house last week. Now we’re not saying that if any one of the above situations applies to you, that you’re a definite U-Haul lesbian; however, if more than one applies to you, it may be time to enact that back up U-Haul plan. So what’s the problem with U-Haul tendencies? It depends on who you ask. The truth is it works for some couples while others find it devastating. If anything, the main problem with u-hauling is not having the time to truly get to know someone.

So how do you know if you have U-Haul tendencies? * When you sign up for online social media sites, you write “looking for a longterm relationship” or “looking for my soul-mate” on your profile. *Anytime you meet a beautiful woman either in passing or during a more personal meet up, your mind frequentif she the

Problems will exist regardless of a title. But hey, if you’re okay with moving in with your “girlfriend” after a week and then realizing that not only does she have u-hauling tendencies, but trashy tendencies as well, we’re not mad at you. If you like it, we love it!
