Unit focus This unit focuses on long vowels.
Teaching points • Discuss how the silent e on the end of each word makes the vowel sound long: a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e. • Discuss any difficult parts of words. • Sort the list words according to the graphemes and brainstorm other words to add to each list.

Rule: When adding a suffix beginning with a vowel to most words ending with e, the e is dropped before adding the suffix. Rule: To make the plural of words ending with y after a consonant, change the y to i and add es. Note: In this instance, the r is doubled to maintain the existing vowel sound. Rule: Double the consonant to keep the preceding vowel sound short.
