1 . Arrange students in four or five groups with a pen and small sheets of paper per group.

2 . Read out one of the words from the “Bizarre Word List” (see next page). Working as a group, students will come up with a definition for the word and hand it back to the teacher.

3 . When all the definitions for the word have been collected, read all of them out plus the real definition, in a random order. 4 . Each group then chooses which they think the real definition is.

POINTS AWARDED: •1 point per team for choosing the correct definition. •1 point for a team EACH time any other team chooses their made-up definition.

• For middle primary students, read out the real definition and two others (you will have to make these up). The team chooses the one they think is correct, getting a point for each.

• Copy ten of the words on one side of the board and the definitions on the other. In teams, students match the words and the definitions. They are given three chances to have their attempts checked by you. Each time, tell them ones (if any) they have correct and how many others (without specifying which ones) are incorrect. Students then have the opportunity to change their choices until their chances are up.
