A modern building, the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany, by James Stirling. This uses a bold composition of planes and lines. The repeated pattern of the windows and the strong lines of the handrails are offset by the simple, well-scaled texture of the cladding. There are some tensions present, as in the twisted plane of the window to the left, which are well resolved into the structure. The vertical lines on the windows have a rhythm which the eye can pick up from one to the other. The forms of each ramped terrace interlock with those of the window walls to integrate the overall composition further.

A pattern of natural elements well unified in the landscape. Here the forest area follows the landform, being related to drainage pattern. The location of shelter and soil, rock outcrops and climatic factors have resulted in the surface pattern being strongly related to landform. An analysis of visual forces would show that the forest is predominantly related to the valleys and hollows while the spurs are free of trees. The road line in the foreground stands out to some degree but also relates to the landform and so is reasonably well unified. Arapaho National Forest, Colorado, USA.

sections does not respond and will therefore appear disunified. It may also disrupt the visual forces across the landscape and create unresolved tension.
