For The Love Of Art onsidering that I am a magazine editor and a fiction writer at heart, it’s probably no small surprise that I am a lover of art. All kinds. Although I am only adept at one kind — writing (or, so I hope!) — I adore all types of artistic expression, from writing to music to visual arts to handmade metal bracelets and leather products of all types. (That includes anything created by TCW’s creative director, Kerrie Boys.) Over the years, I have collected an interesting assortment of visual artwork — some precious, some commercial, some flat-out knock-offs. But one of my favorite pieces of art is a painting by Bev Doolittle, named “Christmas Day, Give Or Take A Week.” Doolittle was popular in the 1980s and early ’90s. I’m not sure she creates art any longer, but she was well known at the time for her wildlife imagery, and the use of camouflage. And she can draw a horse like nobody’s business. My favorite painting of hers — again, no surprise — has a horse in it. It depicts a mountain man taking refuge from a snowstorm in the hollow base of a gigantic Redwood tree, his horse tethered nearby, a roaring fire keeping the cold at bay, a makeshift Christmas tree at his side. Snow is falling thickly all around, even settling upon his horse’s haunches. It was one of her earlier pieces, created before she was all the rage, which makes me love it even more. I am lucky enough to own a signed print of this painting. I got it back when I was newly married, the economy was booming, and I had no idea the bubble was going to burst (in more ways than one). I still remember the smoky smell of the Gatlinburg, Tenn., gallery where we discovered this Doolittle print. The gallery was crammed with an eclectic

collection of Native American and wildlife artwork, from paintings to sculptures to trinkets, and all of it conjured another time and place, offering a slice of this country’s history. Going in that gallery stilled my soul. When we stumbled upon the artwork, we didn’t think twice before buying it. It was simply that perfect. The painting wasn’t cheap, to be sure, but I still love it to this day, nearly 15 years later. To me, that is a good investment, and the true definition of art worth owning. Here’s the thing: It’s not just a pretty picture that I like to hang on my living room wall. At the time of purchase, this painting gave me something that was still a faraway dream of mine: a horse of my own. I loved the way I felt when I looked at the print … as if the promise of a hope fulfilled was buried within its imagery. I realize now, looking back, that it was a symbol of who I wanted to be: a horse owner. On some level, the painting contained a promise to myself, that I would one day own a horse of my own, a creature that was more than just a mode of transportation, but a comrade. When I looked at the painting, I became part of it. I still get that feeling when I look at the piece today. Over the years, my styles have changed a bit, and my life has transformed enormously. But that outdoorsy, horsey side of me has never waned; if anything, it has grown in leaps and bounds. (It is my favorite part of me.) And although I am currently back in what I consider to my most unnatural state — horseless — I still have this awesome piece of art to remind me of who I want to be: a horse woman. And above all, a lover of art.

Main Street Advocacy’s Sarah Chamberlain Urges Women To Get Involved

arah Chamberlain is passionate about engaging women to get involved in the political process. “Women are busy doing so many other things, that politics is not usually on their radar screens, which is what I’m trying to change on the Women2Women tour,” she says. Charlotte has been chosen as the first stop on the national tour — a series of meetings designed to motivate and provide a voice to female voters from all backgrounds and political affiliations. Sponsored by the nonprofit Main Street Advocacy, the tour will kick off at the Ballantyne Hotel on Thursday, Sept. 25. The next stop on the tour is Tucson, Ariz., followed by Sacramento, Calif., and Jamestown, N.Y. Chamberlain, who divides her time

between Charlotte and Washington, D.C., serves as chief operating officer and chief financial officer of Main Street Advocacy, an organization devoted to educating citizens about government. She is the only woman in America to hold these positions for a major political action committee. Q: Tell me about your journey to becoming COO and CFO of Main Street. A: I started my journey uniquely — most of the people who run organizations like this come off the Hill. Fifteen years ago, I graduated with my advanced degrees. Amory “Amo” Houghton [retired member of the House of Representatives and former CEO of Corning Inc.] founded Main Street to be a policy think-tank. He is the

only former CEO to serve in Congress. I knew him all my life growing up, and he brought me down from Corning, N.Y. I was his accountant, and then he retired and I stayed on running it. I had no interest in it initially, but Amo thought I should come to Washington and get involved. I said I’d try it for six months, and 15 years later, I’m still here. Q: In your experience, how do women tend to approach politics? A: My friends outside of Washington — in Charlotte, for example — are living life and aren’t engaged in politics. I’d like to change that. There are a lot of things happening in D.C. that affect their lives. Three-fourths of women are in the workforce today. They manage

over 80 percent of household incomes. They need to affect their checkbook issues, day-to-day healthcare issues, kids’ schooling, etc. They need to get engaged to understand that what happens every two years in November is very important. Q: Tell me about one of your role models. A: Olympia Snowe, a former senator from Maine, is a role model for me in both my professional and personal life. She became a young widow [like me], and she came and took his seat in state legislature. I really respect her. She has an “R” behind her name [Republican] but is very bi-partisan. She did what was right for the people who elected her. Q: If you weren’t working for Main Street, you would be … A: Teaching accounting at a community college, or maybe teaching reading at an elementary school. I’m kind of a teacher now, in a very bizarre way. What I’m trying to do on the tour is take bipartisan issues that are not controversial and start to teach the women in the country about them and why they should be involved. As an example, our sunscreen is 10 years

behind what they have in Europe. The last time a new sunscreen ingredient was introduced was 2002. We are trying to pass a bill to get these ingredients included in our sunscreen. Melanoma has gone up tremendously in the last 10 years, and that’s a piece of legislation that all Americans would benefit from. Q: What does success mean to you? A: Personally, it’s looking at my daughter, Jordan, who lost her father when she was 6 [now age 10] and having her be happy, healthy and secure and tell me I’m a great mom. I don’t mean that in an arrogant way … but that’s my greatest success. Professionally, it’s watching Shelley Moore Capito in the state of West Virginia on her path to becoming a senator. It’s a great thing to watch — to know her personally and to know how wonderful she will be and know how all women of the country will be able to look up to her and know she’s done a great job. I’ve had a very small role in helping her achieve that. Q: What’s your advice for women who want to become engaged in politics?

A: Get engaged in the process at whatever level works for you and your family. It could be school board! Do not wait to be asked. Just do it. If you do, you probably will be victorious. A woman in upstate New York did exactly this. And if all goes as it’s looking today, she’ll be the youngest woman elected to the House of Representatives. You never know unless you try. It’s an old cliché but it’s true. Q: How do you like to spend your free time? A: I like to travel, and I like to spend a lot of time on Lake Wylie. It’s one of the happiest places for me in the whole world — waking up to the beautiful view, going out on the boat, going to some of the local restaurants. I’m really a Charlotte girl. I can’t wait to come home.

Mealtime Must-Have Apple-Cranberry Chicken Roulade 1 Gala apple, diced into 1/4-inch cubes 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/3 cup shredded Gouda cheese 1/4 cup bread crumbs 1 teaspoon salt, divided 2 chicken breasts (boneless, skinless) 1 tablespoon butter 1/3 cup white wine 1/4 cup water 1 1⁄2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 1⁄2 tablespoons cold water 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

about 1/2 inch thick. Season each breast with remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt, then fill with the apple mix and roll the chicken around it. Secure with toothpicks.

In a mixing bowl, combine the apples, cranberries, cheese, bread crumbs and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

As soon as the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees, remove it from the heat and transfer to a plate. Loosely cover with foil and let it rest for 5 minutes. In a small bowl,

mix the cornstarch with cold water until diluted. Pour into the pan with the chicken juices and bring to a boil for a minute or two, until it thickens.

In a large sauté pan, melt the butter over medium heat and sear the chicken rolls on both sides until golden brown. Add the wine and water. Cover the pan and lower the heat to medium-low. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes.

Remove toothpicks from the chicken roulade, and slice into 1/2 inch slices. Top with sauce and fresh parsley. Serves 4 people.

In The MPP Boutique Offers Handmade Handbags & More a Toya Stevens is not a huge talker. Her favorite mode of communication is fashion, and she has been speaking it fluently since her mother taught her to sew at the ripe age of 5. These days, the 38-year-old has a cozy studio named MPP Boutique in downtown Cornelius that showcases MissPrettyPerfect, her private label line of handbags. There, she also shares her design talent with others. Armed with a bachelor’s in fashion design and merchandising from North Carolina A&T State University and an A.A.S. in fashion design from Parsons The New School for Design, Stevens has been known to go after her dreams. During her junior year of college, her mother took her to New York City for the first time. Before LaToya left North Carolina, she printed out a copy of internships available in the city — including one at Adrienne Vittadini, a famous American fashion designer. “We just happened to be walking down Broadway,” Stevens recalls. “I

asked Mom if I could go upstairs to Adrienne Vittadini’s office and see if anyone was there. I think it was a Saturday.” Ironically, the vice president of the company greeted Stevens when she knocked on the door. Soon after, she secured the internship. “That was a huge eye opener for me,” says Stevens, who eventually found her way back to New York after graduating from college. “I started thinking that there was more that I could learn,” she says, “so I applied at Parsons and they accepted me. I wanted to learn the latest and greatest in my trade.” After a lot of late nights, Stevens earned a two-year degree from Tim (Project Runway) Gunn’s stomping ground in a year and a summer. Although she didn’t know Gunn while a student there, she did meet Ellen Eichel of E.D.E. Handbags and worked as a seamstress for her. It was there that Stevens learned how to work with leather. “Ellen loved my work. I didn’t realize the talent that she proclaimed I had,” Stevens says. “At that point I

thought, ‘Maybe I do have a talent.’ ” In typical Stevens fashion, she took a cue from Eichel and in 2007 launched MissPrettyPerfect, her own line of handbags. She started by putting a leather hobo bag she designed on Etsy. “It sold immediately, so then I was like, ‘Aha, I can do this, too.’ ” In addition to her store on Etsy, she now has a physical storefront that she opened in June. Inside you will find Stevens’ own designs, as well as highend consignment pieces — think Burberry, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. In the back of her space sits her workshop, complete with a pattern table and three sewing machines, including an industrial Juki. Hides of leather hang on racks just waiting to be turned into one-of-a-kind handbags. Although Stevens is a huge fan of vintage fashion (Dior is a favorite), her handbag designs are more bohemian, as she tends to mix leather with various prints. “I’m attracted to browns,” she says. “Natural, neutral colors just catch my eye, because they go with anything. I

like to work with leather because it never goes out of style.” Her designs range in price from $55 for a fabric clutch to more than $550 for a leather travel bag. She also offers custom sewing in her boutique, plus sewing lessons and workshops for all levels. Workshops stem from the Charlotte Fashion Incubator, a full-service fashion organization that helps to develop fashion brands. She founded the organization earlier this year. “I know what it’s like to have dreams,” she says simply. Her passion to help others get into the fashion design scene also fuels her in the classroom. She is a part-time adjunct professor at The Art Institute of Charlotte, where she teaches Construction I and II. “I’ve always been behind the scenes,” Stevens says. “There’s still a lot of work to be done, but I’m in it for the long haul.” [TCW]

Mark Our Words Women’s Inter-Cultural Exchange Conference he Women’s InterCultural Exchange is hosting its annual multi-cultural conference “Making Our Mark: Women Leading Change Around the Globe” Sept. 11 at the Charlotte Convention Center. Held in conjunction with Vision 2020 and the Southern Women’s Show, the conference will feature influential leaders sharing their commitment and experiences to create positive change for women across gender, race and culture. WIE was founded in 2005 by Stephanie R. Counts and Dee Dixon. Joan Bradley Wages, president and CEO of the National Women’s History Museum, will give the keynote address. She will discuss her efforts to educate the general public about the diverse historic contributions of women, as well as raise awareness about the need for a national women’s history museum. Speakers include Debra Plousha Moore, chief human

resources officer and EVP of Carolinas HealthCare System, and Venessa Harrison, president of AT&T North Carolina, among others. The conference will offer an update on Vision 2020, a national initiative to move America toward women’s equality by 2020 — the centennial of the 19th Amendment of the Constitution granting women the right to vote. Charlotte’s Own GalFriday Band Hits It Big

Banding Together It’s pretty heady stuff for three 30-something sisters who grew up on the edge of Charlotte and cut their teeth singing at Mount Harmony Baptist Church off Phillips Road. These talented, music-loving sisters — Melissa Purser York,

36; Lauren Purser Wilson, 34; and Ashley Purser Min, 30 — were born and raised in Matthews. Melissa and Lauren graduated from East Mecklenburg High School, and Ashley graduated from Butler High School. The sisters get their love of music honest. Their parents, Dwight and Joy Purser, played in a bluegrass band, and Joy sang in the church choir, so the girls’ young lives were infused with music. “We always sang together in church,” Lauren says. “When we got older and started singing other places, people always asked us when we were going to do it ‘for real.’ One day, we sat down together and started wondering the same thing.” In 2006, after multiple gigs at weddings, fundraisers and other events, the sisters decided to get serious and began to search for a name for their band. “We were trying to come up with a clever name when I heard someone on TV use the phrase ‘Girl Friday.’ I looked it up and found it meant ‘female friend, companion, sister.’ In other words, it was us! Because we’re country, we slapped Gal on it,” Melissa says. With an eye on making it as musicians, the sisters have learned to juggle children (Lauren has two young children, Melissa has three, and Ashley has seven four-legged kids);

harlotte’s GalFriday Band has performed an hour-long set at Nashville’s famed Blue Bird Café and opened for Wynonna Judd at her Rock Hill, S.C., concert last month, but the “gals” sometimes struggle to book a weekend gig at a local club. Haven’t heard of them, you say? That’s about to change. The band has struck up a new relationship with Nashville’s Mike Atkins Entertainment and manager Camy McArdle that is slated to put them on the national stage. “It’s been easier to find success in Nashville than in our own backyard. But now we have this new team around us and we are so excited!” says singer Melissa Purser York. “This is the next level that we’ve been working toward for a very long time, and these elite players will give us national exposure.”

husbands; and other careers (Melissa is a graphic designer, Ashley is a vet tech, and Lauren recently gave up an inside sales job to become a full-time singer/songwriter). GalFriday quickly became another member of the Purser family. “We have to prioritize,” Melissa says. “Our kids come first, but GalFriday is the fourth sister in the group. We have to nurture and take care of her and make her a priority because she’s an extension of who we are. We have to be very good stewards of GalFriday because we’ve given her a lot of spiritual, financial and emotional

investment.” The sisters write their own songs and travel to Nashville to work, collaborate and record. They say sharing the same DNA makes the whole process even more interesting. “We’re sisters and we’re going to get on each other’s nerves at some point. But we’ve learned to operate GalFriday despite any sister glitches we may have,” Ashley says. Melissa adds, “Because we’re all so different, there is a balance. Lauren is the peacemaker. I’m the risk taker, pushing the envelope on and off the stage. Ashley is the organization

behind everything. It would be mad chaos if Lauren and I had to deal with paperwork and merchandise!” The singing sisters are proud to be backed by a talented band. “We have an incredible band of accomplished musicians,” Lauren says. “Dan Hood plays electric guitar; Andy Burger plays acoustic guitar; Stacey Leazer is our bass player; and Ryan York is our drummer. Not only are they amazing musicians, they are all good guys and make it so much fun to do what we do.” GalFriday’s stage presence is unpretentious. On stage, you'll find

them in Corral boots, Joe’s jeans and T-shirts. They enjoy free time spent with family and friends. Playing volleyball, softball and four-wheeling in the country are the Purser sisters’ favorite ways to relax and unwind.

When the sisters are feeling a bit nostalgic, they gather at their parents’ home off Rice Road in Matthews for a homecooked meal. “Our parents still live in the house that we were born in. We love to go there, and we love to eat! Christmastime is a feast, not to mention Thanksgiving, Easter and every other holiday. We eat our faces off!”Ashley laughs. Spending time around their childhood table gives the three women the chance to reflect on what they’ve been through together and where they hope to go. The band has suffered some tough lessons along the way, and the sisters understand that the definition of success must keep changing for GalFriday to keep growing. They each offer nuggets of wisdom. “You must have confidence and never be afraid to ask questions, especially when it has to do with you and your dreams,” Lauren says.

“The minute someone says to you that you should sound like another singer, you need to thank them for their time, pick up your guitar and leave the room,” Melissa says. “Above all, we’ve learned that it’s OK to have a healthy level of skepticism when someone is making you promises,” Ashley says. As the band continues to evolve, the sisters keep adding to the GalFriday bucket list. They would love a tour bus and a nationwide tour to take it on. And they want to perform for the troops. “The military is very important to us and we would love to use any success that comes from our music to be able to give back to them. We would love to do

a USO tour,” Ashley says. They also want to stay true to their fan base — both the fans that have followed them through the years and the ones that have recently discovered GalFriday Band. “We have the most amazing fans who have supported us since day one, and we are grateful to everyone who has played a part in getting us where we are,” Lauren says. “The sky’s the limit now, and we want them all to come along with us on this incredible ride!” [TCW]

hen she was a little girl, Kimberly Pixton Millar’s mother used to give her blank sheets of paper to color instead of coloring books, so she wouldn’t be restricted by someone else’s ideas. It’s a concept Millar has taken to heart throughout her broad career. As a professional cheerleader and cheerleading coach turned wedding dress designer, Millar’s career is free of restrictions, and that’s exactly how she prefers it.

As the child of a Marine Corps pilot, Millar and her family moved around the U.S., ultimately settling in North Carolina. A high school cheerleader and pageant winner, Millar attended N.C. State, where she was captain of the cheerleading squad. After a stint cheering for the New England Patriots, Millar moved to Charlotte to coach the then brand-new Carolina Panthers’ TopCats cheerleaders in 1995. She has been a Charlottean ever since. Millar’s love of cheerleading started as a young girl. “I wanted to be a cheerleader from the time I was little,” she says. “I love to perform and originally trained as a gymnast, so cheerleading was a natural progression. Having cheered in high school, college and professionally, I can say every level was different and I enjoyed my time with each team.

Working for the Panthers was a wonderful experience, and I am really proud of what I helped to create. When I accomplished all I was going to accomplish there, it was time to move on.” For Millar, moving on consisted of taking her experiences in the cheerleading and pageant worlds and turning them into the basis for her now booming bridal and swimwear design company. “I have always designed,” she says. “I designed my wardrobe when I competed in pageants, designed the first crop-top uniform for the N.C. State cheerleading squad, and designed the TopCats uniforms when I worked for the Panthers. Bridal wasn’t on my radar until I started looking for my own bridal gown and couldn’t find anything that worked for me.” She adds, “I designed my gown,

then I designed bridal gowns for my friends, and things just grew from there.”

Something New Millar believes that creative people can be successful in more than one arena if they focus and learn the craft, something she did before jumping into bridal design. She immersed herself 100 percent into the bridal design world, giving herself two years to learn the business side of the fashion and garment industry. She even worked part time at a bridal salon to learn what storeowners liked and disliked about bridal manufacturers. After completing her due diligence, Pixton Bridal was created in 2008. “After designing custom bridal gowns for a couple of years, I designed a small collection, had a photo shoot and put up a website,” Pixton says. “Immediately, I got a call from a bridal store in Ireland interested in carrying the collection. I had to figure out production and delivery pretty fast. The next thing I knew, I was being carried in bridal shops.” The company now employs a small staff, including sales coordinators and a production team. After years of selling to other bridal stores, this year Millar opened her first retail space in Charlotte. The shop is by appointment only. Customers can select from the Pixton Bridal collection or have a custom garment created just for them. With items designed and sewn in the Carolinas, there are no sizes — everything is made to measure. Millar explains, “I find I get the best fit doing this, and it eliminates alterations for my clients. As a finishing touch, my bridal gowns are finished with a small blue satin bow in the inside for their something blue.” Millar has since expanded into swimwear after discovering the difficulty many brides experienced while searching for the perfect honeymoon bathing suit. “The swimwear line was inspired by my brides,” she says. “I would hear them talking about the trouble they had finding a special swimsuit for their honeymoon, and how they didn’t want something that could be found everywhere. It took me two years to develop the line, perfecting the fit, finishes and finding the right fabrics and trims. Now, I’m expanding my brand to include pageant apparel.” Despite her success, Millar doesn’t feel that she has reached the pinnacle of her career. “I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point where I think that I’ve ‘made it,’ ” she says. “My personality is wired to always look for the next great thing, but I do think it is important to celebrate the victories along the way. For cheerleading, it was winning college nationals, then it was making the pros, then it was running a pro team. For design, it was landing the first account, showing at Bridal Market in New York, and moving into my showroom.” The victories keep on coming. In addition to opening her retail shop, the Carolina Panthers featured Millar’s swimwear designs in their TopCats swimsuit calendar. She also was selected as an official sponsor for the Miss NC USA and Miss SC USA pageants. “Everyone has a different definition of how they view success, so I have learned not to compare myself to others,” Millar says. “There will always be setbacks and challenges, but as long as you don’t take things personally and keep your eye on your goals, you will be a success.” [TCW]

f your home is your castle, then this 100-year-old bungalow in Dilworth might only lack a moat. Granted, it’s not a three-story McMansion in a gated neighborhood with pools and four-car garages, like you might find in south Charlotte. But the home is made royal by its smart, gentle renovations, unique collection of eclectic artwork, and colorful decorating choices that click. The dream home has landed on this year’s Dilworth Home Tour, set for Sept. 19-20. The tour features nearly 10 homes in Charlotte’s “first suburb.” “We’ve gone to every home tour since moving here, so it seemed like our turn,” says Liz Ranson, 47, an area professor. “We want to support the Dilworth community in this way. The best thing about the tour is finally finishing up most of our to-do lists that have been hanging over our heads!”

A Historic Renewal Perhaps the most artful portion of the home is the gentle renovation the Ransons gave the two-story home, complete with a historic preservation tax credit to match. Renovations were nothing new to the family. The couple had renovated their 75-year-old home in Alabama — by themselves. This time, they turned to a neighbor architect, a full crew and a rental home a few streets over for the

nine-month renovation. “We rented a house in the neighborhood during the work,” she explains. “We had no insulation in the back of the house, no kitchen, bathrooms were being reconstructed, and a stairwell was being relocated. And I had an infant at the time, so it really was a no-brainer.” The home’s renovation was planned with appreciable deliberation. Consider the attention to detail where the stairs were relocated to the other side of the home. A glossy wood kitchen table set in a banquette is made from older joists in the ceiling. Treads from the original stairs are used as a workspace in a seethrough hutch into the dining room. Ranson says the robin’s-egg blue dream kitchen is her favorite spot in the home. “The best times happen here,” she says.

A true Dilworth bungalow, the Ransons fell in love with the home when they were relocating to Charlotte from Alabama. They moved into the house in 2005 with their first child. They now have three children and, thanks to a 2010 renovation, three more spacious bedrooms, an upstairs playroom, a unique two-person office, a relocated staircase and an appealing kitchen/family room combination. One of the home’s best features is a result of the Ransons’ conscious decision to become art collectors. “One Christmas, we decided it would be great if we started to buy some art,” she says. “So, my husband started looking on eBay — and we found some amazing things online! Some are 300 to 400 years old.” The house is filled with dark florals

The dynamic kitchen features a mammoth island, soapstone counters, basket-weave white marble backsplashes, and a ladder system on rails. Color plays a significant role throughout the house. The front parlor plays music room in a classic red, with numerous pieces of art. The color continues in a spacious study for two that features perhaps the best use of built-ins ever — a bibliophile’s delight, to be certain. A large dining room displays the typical era of leaded glass windows, made complete with a high-gloss, dark wood table that seats 10, and a circular chrome chandelier. Perhaps the best addition is the long, narrow mudroom behind the family room’s fireplace, which may well deserve the title of “Greatest Mudroom Ever.” Trussed up in red, black and white, the mudroom features five long cubbies — one for each family member, plus a guest! — with cabinets up top and drawers below. The upper level features four bedrooms, a cheery playroom, and three bathrooms. Overall, the Ranson family expanded their original 2,700square-foot home to a roomy 4,200 square feet. Despite the focus on indoors, Ranson says the home’s wide, houselength porch was what first captured her heart when searching for a Queen City home. Today it features an eating area at one end and a lazy-day seating area complete with ceiling fan and

wind chimes at the other. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You know, it really was the porch that we fell in love with â&#x20AC;Ś that and the social neighborhood,â&#x20AC;? Ranson says. [TCW]

Q: What are porcelain veneers? A: Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic material used to change the color, shape, or alignment of natural teeth. Also called “laminates,” they become a new surface for the natural tooth. They are made through various techniques from hand layering by a ceramic artist to computerized design and manufacture. The materials available are durable and stain resistant, as well as beautiful.

Q: How are veneers put on the teeth? A: Porcelain veneers are attached to the teeth with strong bonding agents and composite resin cements.The bond is very strong. Ceramic materials are inherently brittle, but supported by an underlying strong structure, they become quite strong. The bonding process in dentistry allows for this lamination effect, so the ceramic veneers are actually strengthened after bonding to the tooth and the tooth is strengthened by the same process.

Q: How long does it take to get veneers? A: The process usually takes two appointments only a few weeks apart. Sometimes, temporary veneers are used between appointments.

Q: Do porcelain veneers require special care? A: They should be treated like natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental cleanings and dental examinations are recommended. Ultrasonic scalers and course polishing pastes at the dental office should not be used to decrease the chance of scratching the porcelain. Chewing hard materials like ice and hard candy should be avoided.

eople have long explored the meaning and beauty of life through music, poetry, painting and other arts. Now more people are using the arts to heal. A growing body of research shows that expressing yourself through art and music helps improve physical and emotional health, according to the National Institutes of Health. No wonder roughly half of the nation’s health-care institutions have embraced the arts in one way or another, from music and art therapy programs to collections of life-enhancing art. Here are a few ways the arts can play a healthful role in your life:

Music A Finnish study showed that listening to music helped stroke patients recover their memory and improved their ability to focus. Other data has found that singing releases the body’s own natural pain killers. Listening to music also promotes the release of chemicals that boost immune function.

Writing Writing about stressful or traumatic events — called expressive writing — appears to help patients in several ways, including fighting infection and preventing depression. HIV patients in a writing program had significant improvements in their CD4 cells, or T-helper cells, a type of white blood cell that fights infection, and indicates the stage of HIV or AIDS in a patient.

Participating in art therapy programs appears to alleviate pain and stress, boosting patients’ quality of life. Several studies found that art therapy can ease depression and fatigue among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. It can also prevent burnout in caregivers and prepare children for painful procedures. Arts For Life, a program for patients ages 2 to 22 who are battling cancer, puts these various ideas into action. The program, which operates in hospitals and other community settings across North Carolina, is aimed at “enriching patients’ lives, nurturing their minds and spirits, and encouraging positive healthcare experiences for children and their families,” says Sarah Alexander, program director for Arts For Life Charlotte. “The music and art lessons decrease stress anxiety for the patients and parents,” Alexander says. “Instead of being worried

about the medicine they are receiving, the kids are excited about the art project they will do that day. Sometimes, they stay for hours after an appointment just to finish an art project they’ve been working on.” Art may provide welcome distraction and stress relief for adults battling cancer, too. The arts can play an important role with challenging emotions — for kids and adults. Mary Ann McGannon, a licensed professional counselor based in Matthews, uses creative arts with people to “identify their obstacles and find more peace and resolution in their lives.” When people express themselves through art, McGannon says, they are using their right brain, the part concerned with creativity and emotions. Traditional “talk therapy” is conducted through the left brain, where logic and language rule. Therapy tools that engage the right brain may help patients more easily access troubling thoughts and emotions they need to work through. Listening to soothing music, scribbling in a journal, or smearing paint on a piece of canvas can all make a difference, believe it or not. McGannon says, “Art sometimes allows us to go places we wouldn’t be able to, otherwise.” [TCW]
