Ballyhoo Moments

n this month’s cover story, eventplanner extraordinaire Mary Tribble talks about her mid-life overhaul, which included selling her company, writing a book, and taking a walk of silence in the Sahara Desert. In the story,Tribble describes the “ballyhoo” moments of her career, and how unfulfilled she felt at the top. She explains, “I’d be in the sound booth with my headset on, following the event’s script, and I’d say to the sound guys, ‘Cue the ballyhoo!’ — which is the moment in an event when the confetti cannons go off, the music comes on, the dancing girls come out, and so on. Then I’d just go home and have a bowl of Special K with my cats. Those ‘ballyhoo’ moments can be empty. I loved what I did, but I hated my life.” In an unforgettable quote, Tribble notes that the parts of our lives that we feel define us are often empty calories. During my first edit of the story, a funny thing happened. I felt an urge to rewrite my life. To decide what empty calories I needed to toss out, like leftover Christmas cookies. To trim the stressful fat from my life, and spend more time thinking and breathing and writing and riding horses and being a mother. For a moment, I felt both inspired by Tribble, and almost jealous! Then I remembered that I have rewritten my life before. Most notably in 1998, when I quit my job as managing editor of a NASCAR publication to attend graduate school and focus on my fiction. Yep. After months of thought and years of stress, I turned in my two-week notice, and turned my back on a career that had earned me a few awards, and made me sick to my stomach on a regular basis. I was 28 years old. I still remember the feeling of letting it all go. Ahhhhhhhh.

Volume 17, Number 9 January 2014 Karsen Price Editor Editor@todayscharlottewomanmag.com

Sharon Simpson Publisher sharon@todayscharlottewomanmag.com

It was a glorious, albeit ridiculously brave moment in my life. (Sometimes, it seems like another woman did that.) It was the apex of a stressful career in which I felt unappreciated — sometimes, downright abused — by my superiors. It also was a good decade before the Great Recession. If I’d known how much the job market was going to change, I don’t know if I could have made such a move! At the time, I also had a husband who made ample money, and two young stepsons who would benefit from having one person in the household not working a full-time job. I never regretted the move, per se, but I often wondered if I had ruined my career. What levels of success would I have enjoyed if I had stayed the course? I missed NASCAR, including my two favorite photographers, one of whom died a few years ago of Lou Gehrig’s disease. And, I still don’t have a bestselling novel on the bookshelves. (Not yet!) Still, I’m at peace with the way my decision turned out. It was exhilarating to step away from an unhappy career. I learned a lot about myself. I broadened my mind, created some good fiction, made three amazing friends in graduate school, and rediscovered a childhood love of horses that brings a peace to my life daily. Obviously, I eventually made my way back into the magazine world! And so, I’m not suggesting you quit your job or leave home or make any rash decisions you could live to regret. I am encouraging you to take Tribble’s advice to heart, and consider the ballyhoo moments of your life. Make those calories count.

Green Bee Do Your Part Founder Terri Bennett Wins International Award

ormer Emmy-winning meteorologist Terri Bennett has made quite a name for herself in the Charlotte area and beyond as an expert on green living. Bennett is the founder of Do Your Part, a multimedia organization she created to spread the word about practical ways for everyday green living. Recently, the author and entrepreneur added to her list of accolades with a Stevie Award for Female Entrepreneur of the Year, an international award that recognizes top women executives and entrepreneurs. The path from broadcaster to entrepreneur was unexpected for Bennett, who never imagined herself in business. She made the decision after a local news station failed to renew her contract in 2007, and she found herself at a crossroads: She could move her family and continue in broadcasting, or branch out into something new. It turns out Bennett didn’t need a new career, simply a new platform. She found her niche by partnering with environmentally responsible companies to teach green tips and solutions on television stations across the country. Humbled by this latest accolade, Bennett is grateful to the woman who nominated her — Fabi Preslar of SPARK Publications, the publisher of Bennett’s award-winning book, Do Your Part. “She’s been one of the biggest

Q: What was your most difficult green challenge? A: It took me a long time to commit to composting, and I’m now a rabid composter! I was over-thinking it — you have to stir it, you have to heat it. Now, I just throw it in a pile in my backyard in my compost bin, and it breaks down. I have two rabbits, my own natural composters. Everything else that we don’t eat or compost, I feed to the rabbits and they make me fertilizer in 24 hours. I had a neighbor tell me, “I don’t know what you’re doing to the basil, but yours is looking so much better than mine,” and I looked over at the rabbits. There’s the difference right there.

gardening or just looking up at the night sky. That’s always been my sweet spot.

Q: What inspired you to pursue this path of teaching others to be environmentally conscious? A: It was an extension of what I was doing in television, because I wasn’t just doing the weather. I was always seeking to educate people about the environment around them — be it through water pollution or organic

More Tips For Greener Ways “Make sure that the lint trap from the back of your dryer to the exterior of your house is cleaned at least annually. Lint clogs up and makes your dryer work harder and longer. Your dryer is a huge hog,” Bennett says. “Every charger, every appliance with a remote control and every appliance with a continuous display is sucking energy even when it’s off. Those little things suck power. It’s called phantom power. It’s a very small amount, but it’s incredibly wasteful,” she says.

Q: What would you like to see happen with your business? A: I firmly believe that women are the change agents of the future. I want to speak to more women on a much grander scale. That’s what we hope will come out of our hard work and perseverance — that we are doing something meaningful, and we do have a good message. And it’s not polarizing. It’s not political. We joke that there are 50 shades of green, but I don’t care which one you pick, just pick one! We’ve all gotten in this mess together, and we all play a part in getting out. The more people I can help understand the simplicity of doing those things that will help our world, and us, then that will be the mark of my success.

blessings of my entrepreneurial journey,” Bennett says. Bennett credits her childhood years in Brandenburg, Ky., for her love of earth science. She speaks wistfully of “the farm, the front porch, and watching thunderstorms,” in a childhood full of memories that include her mother making wine in the bathtub … “in bottles, of course,” she adds. “I am a farm girl at heart, and so much of this for me is going back to what I knew growing up,” she says. Bennett talks about her transition from meteorologist to green entrepreneur.

Q: There are so many suggestions about going green that it can be overwhelming. What are a few things we can all do to do better today? A: If your recycling bin is not fuller than your trash can, that’s a great place to start. Reuse items, move away from disposable items, and maximize your recycling efforts. Recycle, recycle, recycle. Know what you can put in your bins and do it religiously.

Q: What advice would you give other women about turning their passion into a business? A: There are two mantras that I live by, and one of them I adopted after I left television: to make a life and not a living, because prior to that I was more focused on making a living. I went through some definite changes on how I viewed myself and my relationships and my meaning in the world. Now, I’m really so much more about what makes me happy and not what makes me wealthy. My second mantra is: You get what you tolerate. I don’t tolerate what I don’t want to receive.

Cashing In

On Style Natasha Sandhir Follows A Fashion Dream atasha Sandhir was working at a big bank in Charlotte, putting her MBA to good use, when it suddenly hit her: She was unfulfilled. A self-described “former cube worker,” Sandhir realized after three years of banking that the career wasn’t for her … and she decided to follow a dream of owning her own boutique, instead. These days, Ballantyne-based Tash Boutique is fulfilling both Sandhir and the style-conscious patrons who appreciate her “love yourself, love your clothes” motto. “I always had a passion for fashion and loved making outfits,” Sandhir says. “When I was at the bank, I used to say, ‘Making an outfit is the best part of my day, and it’s all downhill from there!’ My husband and friends really encouraged me to make my passion my business, and made me realize that I could open a boutique and actually enjoy my work.” Sandhir had never worked in retail. She relinquished her position at the bank, and garnered a job in retail part time while she developed her business plan and company vision. “It took me about a

year and half, but I took my time, did my research and it has paid off,” she says. Sandhir believes that style shouldn’t be painful. She encourages people to “wear what makes you feel great and have fun.” She says, “It is really important to me for all women to feel good about their bodies! As a woman, you hear your friends and others around you say negative things about their body, but in retail, you hear that on a daily basis! That’s when I realized that clothes are not about your size, it’s about wearing things that fit you and make you feel happy and good about yourself.” Sandhir takes the philosophy one step further at her boutique. “At Tash, we have a no negative self-talk zone. It’s written on the wall. You can say that a piece of clothing doesn’t fit you well, but you cannot criticize your body,” she says. “I always ask my shoppers how they feel in an outfit because that’s important, and I think it helps them understand that clothes can make you feel good and confident.” When it comes to style, Sandhir has some personal favorites. She loves

“separates,” including faux fur and leather vests, mixed media leggings and moto jackets in all colors and fabrics. She can never have too much red in her closet, and she likes to create surprising combinations. “I am into the unexpected,” she explains, “like wearing a really feminine blouse with an edgy jacket or a maxi dress with a moto jacket.” Value is an important aspect of Tash Boutique. Sandhir notes that she would rather have one pair of jeans that make her feel fabulous than a closet full of jeans that make her feel so-so. But, she says style doesn’t have to break the bank. “I am more likely to wear that one pair of jeans, so my cost per wear of a slightly expensive jean is much better,” she says. “Most of the items in our boutique are under $250 because we want our customers to know that you can be fashionable and find great items for a great price.”

efore TV, cable and the Internet spread news at practically the speed of light, Americans relied on World’s Fairs to learn about exciting advancements in modern living. Travel back to this time and imagine the excitement of these discoveries by attending “Inventing The Modern World: Decorative Arts At The World’s Fairs 18511939,” on display at the Mint Museum uptown through Jan. 19. The groundbreaking, international exhibit presents examples of glass, furniture, jewelry, ceramics, precious metalwork and textiles displayed at the World’s Fairs between 1851 and 1939. Many objects have never left their respective institutions or countries. “Inventing The Modern World” comprises approximately 200 objects shown at every major World’s Fair from 1851 to 1939, culled from private and public collections, primarily in America and Europe. Major support for the exhibit was provided by Wells Fargo, the Windgate Charitable Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Duke Energy, Novant Health, Rodgers Builders and the Southern Christmas Show combined forces to bring the exhibit to Charlotte.

The Day

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | January 2014

ary Tribble is known around town as the woman behind some of the most talked-about events Charlotte has ever seen. The creator of eventplanning company Tribble Creative Group, she helped pull off high-profile events such as the Capital Campaign Celebration for the Arts & Science Council, and grand opening celebrations for Levine Children’s Hospital — which included Dionne Warwick and, yes, elephants! She was co-founder of the North Carolina Governor’s Conference for Women, helped rebrand Belk, and played a significant role at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. But the truth is, there is much more to Mary Tribble than what meets the public eye. “Sometimes what we get praise for — what we define ourselves by — is just ‘empty calories,’ ” Tribble says.

Life Events

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | January 2014 22

Tribble may be one of the most visible figures in the Charlotte event-planning industry, but it’s a career that she practically stumbled upon. After graduating from Wake Forest University with an art degree, she worked as a researcher studying decorative arts for a museum. Later, while working at an ad agency, a client gave Tribble a lifechanging opportunity. “He was having an event and he wanted me to plan it,” she says. “I didn’t know what I was doing, but he hired me!” The event went well, and Tribble was hooked. “Event planners are in a unique

position to make people laugh, cry and even to persuade them,” she says. “I thought, ‘There’s something to this.’ I drank the Kool-Aid, so to speak.” At just 24 years old, she started Tribble Creative Group, and business was beyond good. “I can’t fathom how I had the nerve to do it, let alone how I convinced other people to give me money to do it!” she says. Over the years, the events that garnered Tribble the most attention weren’t always the ones closest to her heart. Among those moments she holds dear is the time she spent co-founding and planning the North Carolina

Governor’s Conference for Women, an annual gathering of women to address various women’s issues. “The moments in my career that have moved me the most haven’t been the ones with the most hoopla, but the ones with the most engaging discourse,” she says. Tribble grew accustomed to rubbing elbows with local and national celebrities and leading her high-octane staff. “I was chasing my dream — to someday plan a Super Bowl halftime — but I knew I didn’t want to be an event planner forever,” she reveals. crescendoed into a personal crisis when her company hit the 15-year mark. “I’d be in the sound booth with my headset on, following the event’s script, and I’d say to the sound guys, ‘Cue the ballyhoo!’ — which is the moment in an event when the confetti cannons go off, the music comes on, the dancing girls come out, and so on,” she says. “Then I’d just go home and have a bowl of Special K with my cats. Those ‘ballyhoo’ moments can be empty. I loved what I did, but I hated my life.”

Self-Discovery Tribble seized an opportunity for change when she received a brochure in the mail from Cross Cultural Journeys, a travel organization with an emphasis on spiritual discovery. The offer was for a walk across the Sahara — in complete silence. “This was way out of my comfort zone,” Tribble says. “My family thought I was crazy!” On the trip, Tribble discovered meditation. Already into yoga, Tribble says the amount of self-discovery she experienced changed her indelibly. “I’d never spent time with introspection before,” she says. “I came back thinking I knew it all, but I’d really just peeked outside the tent flap. I knew there was something more out there, but I really hadn’t lived it yet.” On Christmas Eve 2008, Tribble experienced a crisis of another kind. While driving through Charlotte, a postal service truck ran a red light and T-boned her car.

Mary Tribble's personal reinvention has included many adventures, including a walk across the Sahara in silence, a trip to Cuba, and even a stint as a standup comedian at The Comedy Zone. “It’s quite something to see the Jaws of Life coming at you,” Tribble says. Her worst injury was a broken collarbone, but it refused to heal. The resulting chronic, debilitating pain, surgery, and rehab kept her out of the office for nearly six months. That absence, along with the recession, put her company on shaky ground. Tribble was forced to shrink her staff.

Tribble continued reevaluating her life. A self-proclaimed “workshop junkie,” she joined McColl Center for Visual Art’s Innovation Institute, a program designed to help executives and business owners tap into their creativity and apply it to their careers. Tribble met with other artists weekly, learning from their experiences and insights.

“Sometimes what we get praise for — what we define ourselves by — is just ‘empty calories.’ ” — Mary Tribble

“I learned that I was afraid of what would happen if I sold my business: Would I still be relevant? Who would I be? I considered myself very grounded, but this was a big hiccup in my life,” she says. In 2010, Tribble decided to sell her company. “I was turning 50, the company was turning 25, and one of my key employees, Cassie Brown, was turning 40 and wanted to own her own company by then. I was ready.” Brown bought the business, Tribble transitioned out, and Tribble Creative Group became TCG Events. Leaving the business she’d spent a quarter of a century building left Tribble feeling off-kilter. But that feeling didn’t last long. Just a few months later, the mayor of Charlotte called asking Tribble to act as deputy executive director of hospitality and events for the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. “I loved it! I learned so much about politics,” she says of the 18-month stint. Post-convention, Tribble set off on another adventure: writing a book. “I’d always had a book in the back of my mind, so I rented a little casita in the jungle in Costa Rica and I wrote it,” she says. The book’s working title is Cue the Ballyhoo: Creating a Life of Impact and Joy. Tribble describes the book’s premise. “It’s about this idea that you have to check yourself at the door when you come to work … the ‘it’s not personal, it’s just business’ thinking. We need to examine why we buy into that idea in the first place, and then talk about how to change it for ourselves.” Along with vetting publishers for the book, Tribble is currently working with her alma mater, Wake Forest, on a project that studies strengthening alumni relationships. She’s building a new career in writing, speaking and leading trips, and she recently took a group to Cuba with Cross Cultural Journeys. Most importantly, she’s loving her life. “If I hadn’t learned what was missing in my life,” she says, “I’d still be chasing after those ‘empty calorie’ dreams. Instead, I focus on meaningful connections with people and having a spiritual base. That’s the true ballyhoo for me.” [TCW]

Balancing Act Nutritionist Jennifer Streu Teaches How To Eat To Lose The Weight

on local nutritionist, certified personal trainer and lifestyle coach Jennifer Streu. “This attitude is evident if you walk into a gym after January 1,” says Streu, owner of Concordbased Life Balance Health and Nutrition. “It’s the fitness and nutrition industry’s busiest, most lucrative time of year.”

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | January 2014

ach January, many people start the new year with a resolution. Hands down, the most popular resolution among women is to lose weight. The trademark enthusiasm to get fit that swells at the beginning of the year is nothing new to those in the fitness industry, and it’s not lost

The Science Of Losing

Photos By Andrea Perullo de Ledesma

Streu knows it takes more than good intentions to lose weight in a healthy way and keep it off. Her program differentiates itself from the myriad of others in the industry by focusing first on education. “What makes me different is that I teach people how to eat before teaching what to eat. The program is three months long, and by the end of the third month, clients know how to keep the weight off permanently,” she says. Streu is knowledgeable about the physiology and science involved in weight loss, and brings an impressive skill set to her work. She works with clients to help them understand important key concepts of how the body responds to food, specifically as it relates to the area of blood sugar stabilization. When blood sugars are stable, the body achieves a state of balance, known as metabolic homeostasis. Additionally, she works with clients to customize meal plans based on their food preferences, and helps them develop a fitness regime to “allow their bodies to burn the fat they are releasing through nutrition.” Streu is passionate about helping

women get in shape. Much of her passion comes from her own struggles with weight loss after the birth of her son. After his birth, Streu found herself in the worst physical shape of her life. Despite her attempts to lose weight, she couldn’t. Her joints hurt, she lacked energy, she constantly felt hungry, and ultimately she developed depression. “I failed at every weight loss attempt,” she says. Now, she realizes that her miscues were due to a lack of understanding about the way the body works. She became educated about nutrition and fitness, and was able to successfully lose the weight. But the experience left her with a great deal of compassion for other women in similar circumstances. “Knowing how painful it feels to carry extra weight … knowing how difficult the process is and the different emotions one experiences on a weightloss journey enables me to connect with my clients on the deepest level,” Streu says.

One major obstacle to permanent weight loss is food deprivation. With many fitness/weight-loss programs, certain foods are taboo. With Streu’s program, deprivation isn’t an issue. “If a client knows that she will be celebrating with cocktails and baconcheese fries, I teach her what to do to fit it in,” Streu says. In fact, it all comes down to one basic concept: balance. By eliminating unrealistic standards, Streu’s clients are more likely to succeed. Of course, food is only one

component of weight loss. Equally important is fitness. Streu suggests that people figure out what the correct pace is for them. For some, that means starting off intensely, while others may need a slower pace. Commitment and consistency are key and, she says, more likely to occur when people incorporate a fitness routine they enjoy, one that “becomes part of a lifestyle, not a fad that will end by January 15.” She encourages clients to set goals that are within their control. “Instead of saying, ‘I want to lose 10 pounds by February,’ set a goal of taking a certain action. Maybe you really enjoy running. Make a goal such as, ‘I will run one mile every other day, increase my distance each week and sign up for Race For A Cure,’ ” she says. Streu explains that weight goals are counterproductive, because nobody really knows exactly how long it will take to lose a certain amount of weight. By setting a goal over which you have control, you’re setting yourself up to succeed, while knowing you are taking positive steps toward a better state of health.

our style priority this season is warmth! Jack Frost has been nipping since the holidays, so it’s time to pull out the fur! For some, this means a full-length mink coat; for others, a faux-fur scarf. Retailers have developed a myriad of ways to make fur fashionable for outerwear and accessories. Whether you choose to incorporate a little fur or a lot, it can easily be worked into your wardrobe and lifestyle. Below are the top-five wardrobe resolutions you ought to consider for 2014: Resolution #1: Add a little faux fur. There’s nothing warmer! Or more luxurious! Resolution #2: Grab a little black dress, a.k.a. the LBD. It works for any holiday or function. Resolution #3: Try an ankle bootie. Whether a flat or high heel, it can be worn with jeans and a coat, or a dress in the summer. Resolution #4: Blaze a trail with a blazer. As a neutral or a color, it works as a great layering piece. Resolution #5: Be brave and buy some jeggings. Or at least, a ponte pant. These are great with boots or sandals, an oversized sweater or chiffon tank. The HYPOXI® Method Targets Problem Areas

HYPOXI® Master Trainer Mandelynn DeLuca

HYPOXI® Studio Ballantyne Toringdon Shopping Center 12335 N. Community House Road Charlotte, NC 28277 704/540-2370 Hypoxistudio-ballantyne.com or Hypoxi.com Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sessions by appointment.

magine a fitness program where you don’t sweat, recommended workout time is no more than 30 minutes three times per week, and the inches start coming off in all the right places in just weeks. No need to imagine — it’s happening now at the HYPOXI® Studio in Ballantyne. The HYPOXI® Method uses vacuum and compression therapy while a client is working out to create an increase in blood flow to their “problem areas.” Patented machines and dermology suits combined with gentle exercise produces dramatic results without subjecting the body to invasive procedures, special pills or diets. HYPOXI® master trainer Mandelynn DeLuca’s training and expertise ensures the individualized assessment and training program she creates and oversees for each client is scientifically sound and targeted for each particular fitness level and need. The Marine Corps veteran holds an exercise science degree from the University of South Carolina, and has worked in several different areas of health and fitness, including a cardiac hospital where she handled cardiac patient care, and at a med-spa where she saw client after client attempt to resolve their problem areas with lasers and other methods — usually with less-thandesired results. DeLuca explains the science behind HYPOXI®. “You typically lose fat in the areas where there is the most blood flow, and unfortunately that’s not where most people want — or need — to drop the inches. With the HYPOXI® method, we are able to increase the blood circulation in specific problem areas, which reduces both inches and fat in those areas,” DeLuca says.

DeLuca notes that the exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous when working with HYPOXI®. “HYPOXI® works for men and women of all fitness levels,” she says. “It serves as the main exercise program for many folks, but we also have avid athletes that include it in their training regime to treat problem areas that normal exercise routines don’t touch.” Not only does the HYPOXI® Method help inches and pounds disappear, DeLuca says it also reduces the appearance of cellulite and helps tone the skin for a smoother, younger-looking appearance. DeLuca was co-owner of a gym, and she witnessed people coming in and sweating for hours with little to no change in their problem areas. When she first heard about HYPOXI®, she was a little skeptical. “I heard about those claims and I thought, ‘No way is this true!’ But when I started reading about it, it made sense. If you can redirect the blood flow while exercising, then you can lose inches from specific areas,” DeLuca says. She researched the HYPOXI® Studio in Ballantyne — currently one of only three locations in the United States — and she was impressed with the spa-like atmosphere, the happy clients and the astounding results. DeLuca went through the intensive training to become a HYPOXI® master trainer and now manages the Ballantyne studio. She will play a major role in the second HYPOXI® location, set to open in the SouthPark area in the spring. Several more are planned in the area over the next year. Partners Warren Bickers, Mark Street and Edwin Grempels own the North American franchise rights to HYPOXI®, with headquarters anchored in Charlotte. They plan to expand across the United States and Canada. [TCW]

Over Nita Belk Belts Out The Blues

uring the day, Nita Belk crunches numbers keeping the books for Stocker Associates Inc., a general contractor. When the sun goes down, she becomes Nita B., belting out the blues at places like Café Monte and Lucciano’s. Belk’s musical career started with a song, a bass and a pot of soup. It was after a party and she was in the kitchen, helping to clean up after the festivities, singing as she worked. A friend noticed her voice and complimented Belk. “That was the trigger for me to try it. I bought myself a bass and taught myself to play it a little bit, and learned how to sing. I would hole up in my kitchen while I was cooking something labor intensive like soup, and that was my practice time,” she says. The surprise for Belk: People wanted to play with her. She formed a band, landed her first gig at Smokey Joe’s on Monroe Road, and met Tim Belk, the man who years later would become her husband and drummer. She adopted the stage name Nita B. after realizing that her name sounded like something you might find in your closet rather than on your iPod. “If you say my name real fast three times in a row, it sounds like ‘need a belt,’ ” she says. “A girlfriend was at a show, heard it and pointed it out to me. So I switched it to Nita B.”

Plaza Midwood Plaza Midwood features an exciting blend of antique and consignment stores and art galleries. Boutique shops offer unique clothing and home furnishings and accessories. Locally owned restaurants give diners the choice of everything from Southern homestyle cooking to authentic ethnic cuisine.Yoga, dance and kickboxing are also within walking distance. The predominant residential neighborhood of this area, Midwood, takes pride in its historic roots. Many of the bungalow-style homes have been restored to their turn-of-the-century charm and beauty. Pedestrian-friendly streets and sidewalks are shaded by crepe myrtles and ancient pin oaks, and lined by front-yard gardens. With all that Plaza Midwood has to offer, the people in the neighborhood are the most inviting. Everyone will welcome you with open arms into their shops and businesses. They all have a great passion and pride for their community. Just ask and they will tell you why they love Plaza Midwood.

NoDa Affectionately known as NoDa, this area was established in the early 1900s as a mill community. The mills and neighborhood have seen many changes since then, but what has remained is a unique sense of identity. The evolution from milltown to vibrant arts community has produced an eclectic neighborhood where spontaneity and diversity are celebrated. NoDa is widely regarded as Charlotte’s Arts & Entertainment District. The community offers many locally owned performance venues, restaurants, breweries, galleries, and small shops as well as an active street vending and bustling scene during its Art Crawls, the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month.

South End The Historic South End is a unique urban neighborhood that hasn’t forgotten its historical past. It’s this combination of history and urbanity that creates a place filled with contrasting combinations that work so well together. Vintage trolley cars and modern light rail, national chains and local mom & pops. Still, it’s the quirky coolness of the Historic South End that’s so captivating. Beginning in the 1850s and reborn in the 1990s, today’s South End 2.0 is an interesting place to live, to shop, to dine, to work, to party, to chill. There’s really nothing else like it in town.

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | January 2014

Initially, Belk started with rock and roll because it was easier to sing, but she has moved on to jazz and blues. “It’s sort of where I’ve landed,” she says. “I’ve tried all kinds of musical styles. I’ve always loved blues and more classic music like jazz.” The style suits her big voice. She draws from the greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, as well as contemporary jazz and blues vocalists Karrin Allyson and Janiva Magness. Although Belk is not musically trained, she has turned to vocal coaches when she felt the need. “My mom played classical all the time or show tunes, so I feel like I got a little bit of training on the sly,” she says. With her duo, her trio, or her band, Swingin’ Soiree, Belk finds plenty of venues for her passionate voice. She’s paid her dues, and admits there were some performances at rough spots along the way (including one stage featuring a stripper pole, but thankfully not a stripper) to get to the classier gigs she enjoys today. Her venues also include charitable events in her own backyard, Plaza Midwood. “Plaza Midwood is one of the most giving communities I’ve witnessed,” Belk says. “The people are always willing to roll up their sleeves and pitch in, either by volunteering, or by attending events to provide financial support and/or awareness.” Belk lends her voice to help animal rescue charities such as Project Halo, veteran’s organizations such as Luke’s Wings and Veterans Moving Forward, and the Plaza Midwood-Chantilly Chili Cook-off, to benefit Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region. She gets great satisfaction from helping others with her music. She also enjoys the diversity and artistic sensibility that can be found in the old homes that line the streets of her neighborhood. “From my house, at one time, there were six different bands in the area within a two-block radius. When I walk the dogs at night, I know which houses have drummers in them!” she says. These days, Belk is humming a new tune — her own. She is venturing into songwriting, and currently has three songs completed. She is hard at work on her fourth. “I’m writing the lyrics and I have a tune in my head,” she says. “And that’s the hard part. The musicians I play with know music and music notes and all these things that I don’t. I have to come in and hum to them and hope that they pick up on what I’m trying to put in front of them.” [TCW]

“I was 25 years old when I opened Okra. I am the sole owner. I do not have any angel funders or loans, meaning that a huge part of my business has been built from community donations of time and resources. I feel that I am an influential person in the changing and shaping of Plaza Midwood. I am on both the board of the Plaza Midwood Merchants Association and the PM Neighborhood Association, both of which I have been on for two years. I have lived in Charlotte for those two years and in that time, I have opened a successful yoga, massage and tea/coffee lounge that won Best of Yoga Venue by Creative Loafing. “My vision is to create a space in Charlotte where people can gather and heal through pursuing their own unique passions. I am committed and excited to facilitate this, not only in my own space at Okra, but I also hope to inspire many others to make a big jump to do the

same within their own businesses and communities. “I have to honor the amazing support from so many people that has allowed me to build this incredible community in Charlotte; without them it wouldn’t be possible. “Plaza Midwood truly showcases the diversity and passion that exists within Charlotte and serves as a model for a community that supports itself because of each individual’s unique gifts, not despite them.” Alicia Roskind Owner • Okra LLC ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• “My favorite thing about living in Plaza Midwood is the people. My husband Pete Freedman is 50-percent owner of American Beauty Garden Center on Central Avenue, and I work there also. We love Plaza Midwood for many reasons. There are lots of small businesses here run by people with big hearts. The neighborhood is super pedestrian-friendly, and it’s an inclusive and inviting environment for creativity. I rarely travel outside of the neighborhood because everything I need is right here. But mostly I love this neighborhood because I met my husband here in 1993, on Pecan and Central, where Gallery Twenty-Two currently resides. Plaza Midwood has always been a big part of my life story. Plaza Midwood. This hip, edgy, sometimes funky but always lovely neighborhood has the best people; fair and involved fellow business owners; and the most welcoming attitude. Opening a paint-and-sip studio two and a half years ago, the concept was considered nouveau and nonconforming, but the Plaza Midwood neighborhood loved it and welcomed us with open arms. Residents stopped by to offer support — and find out what the heck we did! Some stopped by to buy wine, but after learning that they could bring their own beverages, they painted a ‘masterpiece’ and told their neighbors what fun they had. Like-minded business owners sent their guests into our studio to uncork their creativity. And it all started because this eclectic, fun neighborhood embraced us from the first paint stroke. We are thrilled to be a part of Plaza Midwood and can’t wait to continue supporting this wonderful neighborhood.” Monika Shah and Neha Negandhi The Wine Palette ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• “I love Plaza Midwood because of the diversity of people who live here.

2014 Design Forecast

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | January 2014

nterior designer Gray Walker admits that, like most people, she can fall victim to the “trend machine” from time to time when it comes to home design. “I like to spruce up and re-cover this and move that,” says Walker, a native of Columbia, S.C. “I have often called it a curse!” That said, the owner of full-service interior design firm Gray Walker Interiors notes that good design is timeless. With an art history degree from the University of Georgia, two decades of experience in interior design, and time spent studying photography in Italy, Walker certainly has plenty of experience with good design. Over the years, she has developed a knack for providing clients with unique décor. Her specialty is to design special pieces for important focal points. “My business is very boutique and hands on,” Walker explains. “I concentrate on two or three large projects with smaller projects running at the same time. I become very close to my clients — it’s fun! Once we all get to know each other, and my client realizes how serious I am about what I do, then I let my hair down, and they see that this job is not the ‘glamorous lady in heels fluffing pillows.’

Interior design is actually very hard work! I might show up in jeans with no lipstick, but your custom design banquette will be like no other, trust me.” Walker adds, “I love to think out of the box and I think anyone who has worked with me will say ‘custom’ is my favorite word!” For 2014, Walker sees several things on the trend horizon:

Think outside the box. “Social media has cut the lifespan of a trend in half because people are quickly and easily over-saturated with too much information,” Walker notes. “I think you will see a big movement toward things that are unique and one-of-akind: a collection well-displayed; custom furniture; a vintage chandelier for the entryway that you find at a flea market; objects that are yours only.”

Get colorful! “I am feeling bold color. With ‘radiant orchid’ being Pantone’s color of the year, the mood is set for gutsy coloration. It is also about color combinations: radiant orchid and chartreuse, cobalt blue and yellow. I love color!” Timeless textures. “Layering textures will be big,” Walker predicts. “This is something that I have always

done, but it is on the trend scene this year. An example would be mixing a sheepskin rug, art with gilded frames, glass lamps and mirrors. Combining all of these textures creates a timeless and classic room.

“I love to think out of the box and I think anyone who has worked with me will say ‘custom’ is my favorite word! — Gray Walker

Shape up and go floral. “For 2014, I think a fabric trend will be to use geometrics with florals, because they soften the angles on prints, like chevron. One thing I’ve seen in new lines from the top fabric houses is the return of the cabbage rose floral, although the colorations of the florals have been tweaked. I look at them and think, ‘Oh, I remember that one.’ That goes back to the idea that good design never really goes out of style. Walker has additional suggestions for creating a fresh, unique home in 2014. She suggests adding very saturated hues to your home’s palette, and avoiding pale hues. For

those who want to keep the background color scheme neutral, she suggests adding in pops of color. “If you are feeling it,” she says, “then do paint the room a bold color and use lighter shades of that color in the room, or with contrast color.” She also encourages homeowners to consider the statement that their home entryway way makes. “If homeowners want to freshen their homes for impact in 2014, I believe that your entry is a clear indication of what a guest may expect the rest of the house to feel like,” Walker says. “It is a place you aren’t always in, so maybe if you want to try a gutsy color, that would be the place to do it.” She adds, “You can never go wrong with playing with the entry. I have redone mine six times!” [TCW]

Implants To Replace Lost Natural Teeth

Lisa’s smile with temporary tooth bef removable ore treatment

Ross W. Nash, DDS, is one of only 46 Accredited Fellows in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, meaning he has acquired extraordinary skills in the area of esthetic and cosmetic dentistry.

s a dentist friend of mine used to say, implants are not replacements for teeth, they are replacements for no teeth. Though natural teeth are best, sometimes teeth are lost for various reasons. In many cases today, they can be replaced with implants. In the case illustrated here, this attractive young woman had a traumatic incident that caused her to lose one of her front teeth. An implant was used to replace the tooth, returning her to full function and esthetics.

Q: Why would a person choose an implant over other tooth replacement options? A: An implant is fixed in place and can be brushed and flossed just like a natural tooth.

Q: Can one eat normally with an implant? A: An implant functions like a natural tooth and eating habits should be the same. Q: How long does the process take? A: After an implant is placed, a few months are needed for integration into the bone, and then a crown can be fixed to it. Q: Do implant teeth look natural? A: Most implant restorations look just like a natural tooth.

Nix Stress Six Daily Habits That Calm And Soothe

tress is inevitable. But the headaches, sleep loss and muscle tension that tend to come along with it don’t have to be. And the more you can tame the effects of stress in your body, the healthier you’ll be. “Feeling stressed, especially over a long period of time, can double your risk of chronic health problems, such as chronic pain, arthritis and cardiac and gastrointestinal problems,” says Candace S. Hunter, Psy.D., a neuropsychologist at Novant Health Neurology Specialists in Charlotte. The culprit: cortisol, a stress hormone that disrupts almost every aspect of your physiology. It takes practice to become a Zen master. But these habits can put you on the road to a calmer mind and healthier body.

Invest in your health. “The trifecta of self-care is adequate sleep, plus good nutrition, plus moderate exercise,” says Amy Combs, Psy.D., of the Charlotte Center for Balanced Living. “These in combination are the foundation of stress management.” Studies show that people who skimp on sleep release greater quantities of cortisol than those who take time for rest; getting a good night’s sleep induces the production of chemicals that block the hormone surge. A study in the European Journal of Public Health showed that participating in a fitness program lowered levels of cortisol and epinephrine, another common stress hormone, in a group of young women. Take a deep breath. Diaphragmatic breathing is key to centuries-old health traditions such as yoga and tai chi, and for good reason: Abdominal breathing increases the amount of oxygen in your blood, which causes the brain to decrease the concentration of stress hormones. Plus, the extra oxygen

make time for a fun outing. Experts say people who have friends and family who can help them in the face of potentially stressful events tend to see the events as less of a threat than they would otherwise. Likewise, they experience less stress.

Being mindful lets you step back from the inner treadmill of hurry and worry, and reconnect with the deepest places within yourself.

Get an inner life. Mindfulness, visualization and meditation all represent ways of finding calm from within. To be “mindful,” just pay attention to what’s happening inside and around you for a moment. This can be simply listening to your heartbeat or your breath. Being mindful lets you step back from the inner treadmill of hurry and worry, and reconnect with the deepest places within yourself. Another possibility is to sit quietly and focus on your breath, while not trying to control your thoughts. In a University of Oregon study, people who were taught this meditative technique reacted less to stress after just a week. Practice spirituality. Belief makes a crisis easier to accept — and survive.

Widen your circle of friends. Social interaction like that found in book club meetings and family get-togethers provides a buffer against stress. “During times of stress, people tend to socially isolate themselves,” Hunter says. Yet, what they should do is call a friend or

Schedule uninterrupted self-time. Scheduling an activity that is calming allows us to “reset” physically, reducing the cumulative impact of stress, Combs says. This uninterrupted self-time might be a cup of coffee in a coffee shop or quiet area of your house with a good book, getting a manicure or massage, or taking 30 minutes to watch a favorite show. “The idea of ‘scheduling’ stress-reducing activities may seem like an oxymoron,” she says. “By putting them on our schedule, we reduce the stress around finding time for ourselves. When we are stressed out, we need these activities already on the books!” [TCW]

stimulates alpha waves in the brain associated with relaxation and calmmind states. Practice breathing more deeply by placing your hand on your abdomen. Inhale deeply, and let your abdomen rise as you fill your lungs with air. Now slowly let the air out as you feel your stomach fall. “You can use this technique anywhere — while stalled at a traffic light, before giving a presentation — and it doesn’t cost a thing,” Hunter says.

“Having faith allows us to derive some purpose from adverse events and believe that something good can come from it,” says Harold Koenig, M.D., director and founder of the Center for the Study of Religion/Spirituality and Health at Duke University. Plus, people who participate in religious activities get the benefit of support from others in their faith community.

Life, Through

Action “The loss of a loved person is one of the most intensely painful experiences any human being can suffer.” — John Bowlby

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | January 2014 58

I know that kind of loss. I bet many of you do, too. So what do you do? Become a Female in Action. Exactly a year ago, along with a good friend, I helped create the group FiA (Females in Action). What caused me to do this? Pain. By age 40, I was grieving, lonely, searching, wandering and very worried I would get cancer or ALS (known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), and cut this beautiful life short — things I had experienced happening to my parents. Grief is a funny thing. I learned I could not work enough, workout hard enough, run enough, pray enough, or drink away the grief monster. No book or therapist could solve my pain. You see, sometimes pain is the only thing left to hold on to. At the very least, it is something you can feel. So, of course, I held on tight! In many ways, I lost a decade. Or two. The song “Closer To Fine,” by the Indigo Girls, defines what I was going through. Another good one is “Everybody Hurts Sometimes,” by REM. I was hurting. That much was certain. I didn’t know what to do with all that hurt. But, I learned. I learned that if you ignore life’s “hurts,” they get covered by addictions to busyness, food, anger, depression, drugs, alcohol, infidelity, or worse. You can

only break the pattern through community and in helping others to heal, too. I could not do it alone! I looked around for this type of “transformation community” in Charlotte. Then I had a thought. Should I create it? About that time, I heard about F3nation, a men’s workout group that stands for fitness, fellowship and faith. The program has been life changing for many men. How I wish my father (former military) had enjoyed that network of support … maybe he would be with us now. I knew there was the same need of fitness and fellowship for women out there. And so, I talked with F3 founders and decided to test it out for females. Last January, my friend Jasmeet Dillard agreed to join me for our first workout. Would it work for women? FiA, formally F4, launched in January 2013. And guess what? It did work for women. We currently have over 100 women who meet at 5:15 a.m. daily and are done by 6 a.m. We meet across Charlotte, Matthews, Ballantyne, Davidson and Fort Mill, S.C., to workout, circle up, say a prayer or positive intention for the day, before running off to work or work at home. We are now transforming — mind, body and soul. And that includes my own mind, body and soul. Our age group ranges from 10 years old, to 50. Each fellow Female in Action says it makes her work and home life better. So,here’s to a great year in action! It has been a joy-filled success. [TCW]
