FALL 2022

JOY of theGAME

TCSL Members, Another soccer year is upon us!

We strive for continuous improvement in everything we do, which is why we’ve announced a new scheduling model, 8U opportunities (“TCSL Fives”) and an expansion of the Minnesota NPL heading into year three of the successful platform.

And while 2021-22 saw many on-the-field successes, we were also pleased to support clubs off-thefield as well: referee recruitment and on-boarding support, a Sideline Project initiative, and the hiring of a dedicated resource in the TCSL office (Dawn, our Club Development Coordinator) to support clubs each and every day.

Matt Tiano CEO Dawn Ellerd Club Development Coordinator

As we reflect on 2021-22, we are reminded of the tremendous accomplishments of TCSL members –clubs, coaches, players, referees and families.

TCSLFROM

The Minnesota NPL sent 12 winners to the NPL Finals, Minnesota Cup sent 24 teams to national competition, and TCSL league play culminated in a new, improved concept, the TCSL Final 4, which saw qualifying teams from each TCSL division a chance to compete for a true league championship.

Best of luck this season!

As we welcome back to the field 1,500 teams in 2022-23, we take seriously our obligation to deliver a terrific soccer experience for all: clubs, coaches, referees and of course, the player.

» Consider team blackout dates AND our desire to have matches spaced out as much as possible throughout a season.

TCSL Partners with GotPro for Scheduling

TCSL is excited to announce a partnership with GotPro, a division of GotSport, to handle scheduling for its Fall, Summer and NPL leagues. TCSL becomes one of the first domestic youth leagues to leverage the technology to produce optimized and club-friendly schedules. For example, the system will allow us to: » Better manage coach conflicts for coaches coaching multiple teams.

» Other preferences and constraints.

“The scheduling process is so important because it directly impacts the experience for everyone – the club and especially the administrator, the coach, and the family. We’ve been thinking about ways to improve the scheduling model, not because it’s been broken but because as we’ve grown, we have to continue to evolve and get better. We are looking forward to working with GotPro to make this a reality.”

WHAT’S NEW Evolving the Experience

Matt Tiano, TCSL CEO “It is evident that TCSL is a forward-thinking organization looking to make existing processes better and more efficient. In our conversation leading up to our partnership, TCSL repeated often that the experience for the member club was and is the focus. We are excited to exceed expectations on behalf of TCSL and its members.”

Player Development

» Family-centric, play-date model. As much as possible, teams play two matches in a two-hour span.

Why TCSL Fives?

Stay tuned for player development opportunities in 2022-23!

» 8U soccer should be its own brand and should not be a mini-version of older-aged soccer, which is why the game model is 5v5.

Expansion, Growth of the Minnesota NPL

» Retain players at 9U that are better prepared with a better developed skillset.

As the first two years of the Minnesota NPL saw enormous success, year three will see expansion, based on member request, by offering the NPL experience to more clubs, teams and players.

As such, there are now two levels in the Minnesota NPL, “Super” (highest) and “Premier”. Both levels will play an identical schedule (September-June for 13U/14U and December-June for 15U-19U). “Super” Division winners will advance to the NPL Finals.

TCSL Fives

After a successful pilot this past summer, we are excited to formalize a roll-out of the TCSL Fives (as in, “5v5”) program. For the 8U player, this program is meant to introduce the 8U player to competitive soccer.

WHAT’S Evolving the Experience

NEW

This past summer, we addressed feedback from our members that a true end-of-season, qualificationonly playoff event would be a benefit for clubs, teams and players. The event was an overwhelming success. We plan to continue this format in Fall 2022 and Summer 2023. Read on for more details about these events.

Overuse Injuries

How can caregivers and coaches help young athletes avoid overuse injuries?

SAFETY

» Advocate for young athletes by focusing more on fun, fitness and friends, and less on competition and winning.

22 | TCSL MAGAZINE | Fall 2022

HEALTHPLAYER

» Watch for signs of burnout or persistent pain.

As a sports medicine physician at TRIA, Dr. Heather Bergeson has noticed an increase in overuse injuries in youth athletes. These injuries happen when young athletes specialize in one sport too early or don’t rest enough in between seasons. It’s important to understand that 100% of overuse injuries are preventable.

It’s the sticks and stones of everyday life that bring you to TRIA. Like the handstand that gave your wrist the twist. Whether you’re a professional athlete or living room gymnast, you’ll receive the same expert orthopedic care and attention you need to get back in the game. It’s why you’re treated and how you’re treated by TRIA.
