SWARTBERG COUNTRY MANOR

SOUTH AFRICA

Swartberg Country Manor is nestled on the farm “Voorbedacht” situated in the Cango Valley at the foot of the world-renowned Swartberg Mountain Pass. The picturesque panoramic view of the Swartberg Mountains will bring comfort to anyone that wants to “get away from it all” and simply soak up the peace of its tranquil surroundings. The extraordinary views of the Swartberg Mountains from the veranda of the original farmhouse compelled us to create a venue where more people could share in the tranquillity and serenity of this beautiful valley. “Voorbedacht” farm is nestled amongst working farms, it offers our guests the unique opportunity to explore and experience the true essence of subsistence farming in the Little Karoo. Among the various agricultural products farmed, livestock such as, cattle, sheep and ostriches are also present. Daily walks on the farm allow guests to experience the peace and serenity of this beautiful valley, while for the more “wild at heart”; excursions into the mountains can be arranged such as mountain bikes to explore the more rugged terrain.

CHOBE BAKWENA LODGE 21

CHOBE BAKWENA LOD GE BOTSWANA Bakwena translated from Setswana, means people of the crocodile, this refers not only to their situation, but is also one of the largest tribes in Botswana, naturally the owners are both Bakwena! Owners Jenny and Adam Young have worked throughout Botswana, managing bush camps and lodges and running their own safari company. Having spent so much of their time working in luxury lodges, they wanted their guests to enjoy similar levels of comfort at a reasonable rate and more importantly be able to take comfort that in choosing Bakwena as their destination, they have also made the right choice for the environment. They acquired the land in 2000 and since then they have been growing their dream and planting the seeds of the indigenous riverine woodland. What started out as a barren soccer pitch has become what you see today, a refuge for their guests and any wildlife that chooses to share their sanctuary. After traveling the world and living in Cape Town while building towards the goal of Chobe Bakwena Lodge, they have returned to their heartland bringing their two young sons back to their “real” home in Botswana.

MI DGARD COUNTRY ESTATE

BY O&L LEISURE

38

39

MI DGARD COUNTRY ESTATE NAMIBIA Midgard Country Estate is located 85 km (one hour) north-east of Windhoek, and only 70 km from Hosea Kutako International Airport, in the unspoiled Otjihavero Mountains. An ideal family hide-away, a must stop for international visitors and the perfect venue for intimate meetings, team-building events or weddings. Carl List, the founder of the Namibian Corporation, Ohlthaver & List, acquired Midgard Country Estate in 1937. His son, Carl Werner List, farmed the 12 000 hectare estate, developing this private and intimate world into a household name in Namibia. Today our guests are invited to enjoy the tranquility, while marveling at the pioneering German Settler spirit which gave birth to it all. “Midgard”, a word found in Old Norse, Middle English and High German languages, has varying meanings, but is popularly thought to mean “A paradise where the earth rises again, fertile and green, creating a protected world and a safe empire for the people”. It’s an intimate world of its own. One which offers 46 newly decorated and fully equipped rooms, Carl’s Dining Room & Bar, the African Boma, two swimming pools, the Pool Bar & BBQ Terrace, gym and sauna, and private skittle alley (kegelbahn). These are all spaciously situated in a sprawling country garden, bordering the banks of the Swakop River, as it meanders through the estate on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

IMVELO JOZIBANINI CAMP 56

57

58

I MVE LO JOZIBANI NI CAMP ZIMBABWE Jozibanini Camp is situated in the remote south west of Hwange National Park in a wilderness unused for nearly 20 years; only the wildlife and the Parks rangers who look after it frequent this area, once roamed by San people. This is a small, truly exclusive camp in a truly wild place, providing a unique, untamed wilderness experience.

The ecosystem here is semi-desert akin to the Kalahari in neighbouring Botswana. Ancient windblown fossil sand dunes are separated by shallow valleys where elephant paths have compacted the terrain, providing Imvelo with the opportunity for a unique experiment of game viewing by mountain bike. Imvelo is breaking new ground in Hwange in terms of the remoteness of the location and the uniqueness of the environment.

TANZANIA 61

SERENGETI BUSHTOPS

62

63

64

SERENGETI BUSHTOPS TANZANIA ‘Breathtaking!’ That’s what our visitors tend to say when gazing out over the romantic expanse of the Serengeti plains, one of nature’s most spectacular landscapes, spanning over 14,763 square kilometres. Africa is truly blessed by these lands. You cannot find a more wonderful location in this ‘extended place’, which the Maasai call the Serengeti. The camp nestles within the northern sector of the reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. With the famous Mara River just 15 miles away, the camp lies directly in the path of the spectacular annual wildebeest migration, which takes place between June and November. Like the sister camp being Mara Bushtops, you are not simply witness to nature, at Serengeti Bushtops you are participants, living in the heart of the ecosystem which supports the greatest wildlife populations in Africa. That means exceptional, abundant wildlife viewing all year round – with a ringside seat for nature’s most awesome event.

65

66

ROVING BUSHTOPS 67

ROVING BUSHTOPS TANZANIA Having pioneered the idea of ‘wild luxury’ at Mara Bushtops, then extended it to Serengeti Bushtops, the owners were determined that their third Bushtops location should be at least their equal – for game viewing and comfort alike. So they are delighted to find a stunning base at Seronera in the Central Serengeti, not far from the Moru Kopjes area (often called the jewel in the crown of the Serengeti). The Kopjes are huge granite rock formations which burst through the grass plains, creating vistas of stunning beauty beneath rolling hills. The land traps water, attracting abundant wildlife and ensuring fabulous viewing throughout the year. For those who love nature in its purest form, the heart of the Serengeti is without peer or parallel. The sheer quantity of game here is phenomenal, with resident and migrating herbivores stalked by loping leopards, charismatic cheetah and languid lions. Between November and May, the migration either passes through or is within one or two hours game drive away from Ndutu or the Western Corridor.

KYANINGA LODGE UGANDA Set against a stunning backdrop of Lake Kyaninga and the legendary Mountains of the Moon beyond, Kyaninga Lodge is the spectacular result of one man’s vision and six years of unwavering commitment to creating an experience of Africa’s beauty unlike anything else. When Englishman Steve Williams first saw the lake on his way to visit the gorillas, there was nothing there aside from unspoilt natural beauty and breathtaking vistas. There aren’t many people who could stand on the rim of an ancient crater lake thousands of miles from home, and have the vision to imagine building a luxury lodge entirely out of timber on that very spot. Six years and over a thousand hand carved logs later the stunning vistas remain, and thanks to Steve’s achievements, they can now be enjoyed in ultimate comfort and style.
