Lamai’s eight open-fronted bedrooms are peppered around Kogakuria Kopje, a tumble of giant boulders that stands proud above the northern Serengeti grasslands. You can see from here for miles. Over a million wildebeest cross these plains each year from July to October, on their way to dodge the jaws of death in the Mara River. Out on the Lamai Wedge, which bristles with mammals year-round, there is never a dull moment. Above it all stands this sacred kopje– and Nomads mission is to be its guardians. Creating an outstanding lodge that did no harm here was no mean feat, but they took the view that where nature leads, beauty and style would follow... and so it did.

Tucked just a little bit further down the kopje from Lamai Serengeti, Lamai Private is an exclusive use lodge in the northern Serengeti, just a couple of km’s from the Mara River. The camp has just four open-fronted rooms all with their own private & roomy verandas, 24hr power and en-suite bathrooms with hot & cold running water, flush toilets and powerful showers. One of the rooms is ideal for families, with two adjoining bedrooms and a shared bathroom, all sited with beautiful views over the plains. Lamai Private has its own private bar and dining area, and its own swimming pool and is fully staffed with a dedicated camp team to cater to your every need. This area of the Serengeti plays host to the migration river crossings between July and October and is an incredible spot for resident game year-round.

Here, we define our own Ngorongoro, off the beaten track, in Maasai territory. Following one of the world’s most stunning private drives, we bring you up to a dizzying edge of elemental Africa with panoramic views spinning forward into the Crater and back to the Serengeti plains. This is much more than a great vantage point for visiting the Crater, this is where we live the Ngorongoro life. On the remote North Western edge of the Ngorongoro Crater rim, just beyond the Seneto descent road, approached along a private access road. Our camp is uniquely off the beaten track but right on the Crater rim, and has exceptional views both down into Ngorongoro Crater from one side (sunrise), and out over the Serengeti from the other (perfect for sundowners). Entamanu Ngorongoro has seven canvas rooms elevated on wooden platforms, with two family rooms made up of two full size rooms and a shared bathroom. Each room has indoor heating and en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, and flush loos. Every effort has been made to create comfort in this elemental place.

KURO TARANGIRE NORTHERN Tanzania THIS ORGANIC, LIGHT-FOOTED CAMP HIDDEN AWAY IN THE PARK, IS PROBABLY CLOSER TO OUR HEARTS’ CORE THAN ANY OTHER. Tarangire country is big and bold: our camp is the opposite…a little gem. Full of heart and soul, and tucked into a grove of secluded riverside bush, it is so much at one with the wild that animals hardly look up as they do their thing around us. Elephants often pass right through camp, and we can be completely absorbed into their secret lives, from the sweet comfort of our sun-slatted living space. Six large, light safari rooms made of canvas and thatch with verandahs and in door and outdoor showers and flush loos. Opensided, airy, grass thatched lounge and dining room furnished with hides, canvas and a touch of colourful textiles. The family tent consists of two en-suite bedrooms.

Our lodge is so much part of the Rufiji’s ebb and flow that it seems almost moored on the banks, with one side entirely open to the river. Views across its brown, swirling waters call to mind adventure movies from another time. Indeed, in the early days, we pioneered legendary foot safaris here, and we still make life in and around the lodge as action-packed and exciting as the fizzing natural world around it. 8 spacious open-fronted cottages raised on high concrete platforms. There are 5 Standard Riverside rooms and 3 Hillside Suites. All have en-suite bathrooms, with flush toilets, powerful showers and hot and cold running water. The 3 Hillside Suites have an additional lounge area and private plunge pool. All rooms have standing fans and epic views out over the river.

Kiba Point offers private groups of grown-up families and friends the unrestrained freedom of one of the world’s biggest reserves, with exclusive guides and vehicles and a camp full of guilty, natural pleasures. 4 spacious, open-fronted cottages (2 doubles/2 twins, 1 with adjoining child’s room), raised and made of stone and thatch. The interiors are cool and elegant; huge beds with softly draped mosquito nets, planters chairs and sun-beds for chilling out. Each room is en-suite with in and outdoor shower and private plunge pool. The private lounge and dining room also has a pool and is a wonderful place to feel at home in the bush.

Western Tanzania A CLASSIC EXPEDITIONARY CAMP IN A MILLION ACRES OF MAMMALS. When we first pushed into Katavi way back, no one had signed the park guestbook for a decade; camp was three bedrolls and a fire. We went feral in the freedom of being amongst such concentrations of beasts. Though we’ve upgraded since then, with comparative luxuries like showers and silverware we stay faithful to how that felt, and our outpost still sits amongst the elephants, bellowing hippos and tamarind trees. A classic expeditionary outpost with just six spacious safari tents with large shade net windows to let in lots of light and cool breezes. En-suite bathrooms with traditional safari style bucket showers, and eco- flush toilets. Hot and cold water available on demand.

Come on a legendary journey to meet the most privileged primates on the planet: the wild chimpanzees of Mahale - and us, the trackers, guides and helpers who share their leafy Nirvana. In the forest’s dappled sunlight, chimpanzees romp and commune around us. At the lakeshore, on a white beach, Greystoke opens its shaggy arms, hewn from vintage dhows, proffering yet another level of pleasure to all our intrepid guests. The six open fronted double bandas are set the edge of the forest and base of the mountains, looking out over the beach and lake. The bandas have been built using reclaimed dhows from the lake shore and each has its own unique character and outlook. There is a mezzanine top floor level which can accommodate a child over 8 - but please see rules on chimping for children. En-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water and flush loos.
