The resplendent Trinity College C hapel provided th e backdrop fo r th e pagea ntry of th e investiture of o ur new president, James F. Jo nes, Jr., on Sunday, O ct. 17, 2004. The O cto ber sun had dipp ed eno ugh into the south ern sky to face directl y at th e side of th e C hapel fac ing th e Quad to provide us wi th a spectacular illunu nati o n as th e Trinity College Pipes and Drum Corps marched o ut ahead of th e procession wi th all of our favorite fac ulty members dressed in th eir medi eval regalia acco rdin g to the aca den"li c rank of th eir chosen professio n . Classmate Alfonso Carney was th ere as a charter trustee, and it was great to see fo rmer presidents, D obelle, Painter, English, and Lockwood, as well. Our new president is incredibly perso nable with a rare ability to remember names and to work th e crowd with charnung sto ries refl ecting his south ern perso nali ty and eminent good taste. Rumor has it th at Jimmy Jo nes, as he wishes to be addressed, wants to re-institute many of our most favo rite traditio ns to trul y give Trinity a greater feeling fo r its uniqu eness and special role in th e edu cation fi eld . M y vote is fo r th e re-institution of our student court medusa / ho nor society, which was a wo nderful additi o n to o ur student governm ent an d w hich we nt by th e wayside as a result of the revolutionary times in which we fo und ourselves . Of course, th ere were many traditi o ns w hich are better left to th e scrap heap of history and w hich were so un civil and offensive that they should not even be mentio ned . I am sure th at o nl y th e best wi ll survive with this enthusiastic new president to w hom we wish the best for th e future of our beloved Trinity. Your Secretary attended the R eUiuo n planning sessio n with Ernie Mattei, John Pye, and Bob Kaynor. There is more o n Ernie and Jo hn later in these Notes. Bob Kayno r is presently at MIT an d an Episco pal priest, as well. H e really has his hands full , and it was great to see !Lim again . Dix Leeson , referenced later in th e N otes, has given us some fabulous suggestio ns fo r the R euni o n . Harry Baetjer continues to teach at Tower Hill School w here he began right after gradu atio n fro m Trinity. H e is prese ntly head of th e Upper School. His last of three so ns, Sea n, is going to apply to Tri nity, and he is hop eful th at th ere will be anoth er Baetj er on Sunu1ut Street. He also has a nephew who is interested in Trinity. H e was o n th e campus during this past summer and th o ught it looked great. H e ran into Paul Raether '68 o n the Lo ng Walk and had a meaningful encounter wi th him.
David L. Pollack ' 69, a partner in the Bankruptcy, Reorganiztaion and Capital Recovery Group at Ballard Spaher Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, recently moderated and participated in a panel discussion entitled "Bankruptcy Jeopardy-What Your Lease Giveth , The Court May Take Away" at the 2004 U. S. Law Conference of the International Council of Shopping Centers in Hollywood, Florida . Pollack is partnerin-charge of his firm's Real Estate Leasing Practice Group and is a frequent lecturer on retail bankruptcy subjects and associated leasing issues.

Sure wish we all co ul d have been th ere. Alfo nso Carn ey was at th e inaugu rati o n as a board member. He fo und it to be most impressive, but very cold. His so n, Alfonso lll , is a freshman at Riverdale Country School in Riverdale, NY, where he plays junior varsity football , mu ch to his fa th er's chagrin and to the thrill of his motl1 er. His da ughter, Alison, who is a 2002 graduate of Mo unt H olyoke College, conti nues to pursue a singing career in N ew Yo rk and in Washin gto n . She has a great vo ice, but success in this business often has little to do with quali ty, as we all kn ow. Pierre de Saint Phaile's oldest daughter, Elizabeth, is a freshman at D avidso n in C harl o tte, N C. His son, Peter, is a senio r at BronJ.rville High and will be turni ng to college applications once the foo tball season is over. H is daughter, Annie, is a ju nior, and his son , Jo hn, is in seventh grade. H e says that having Eliza beth go off to college was a diffi cult experi ence fo r his wife, Ellen, and him- her absence has really changed the dynanucs of th eir ho usehold. So un ds like empty nest syndrome! H e has retired as a partner of Davis Polk in New York C ity and has done vario us entrepreneurial assignments si nce th en. He was managing director and general counsel at a ve nture capital/ priva te equi ty firm set up by General Atlantic Partn ers Goldman Sachs and me Boston Consulting Group to help big businesses develop the Internetbased analog to th eir own Line busin esses. H e is prese ntly interested in purchasing a mutual fund business wi th some of his investing fr iends. M eanwhile, he is also serving on rwo mutual fund boards and one industri al company's board . Larry Fox attended the investitu re of President Jones with his wife, M arilyn, and son , Jonath an, as a result of already being at Trinity for Family Weekend. Larry lives in Fairfield Coun ty, CT, and enjoyed visiting his son , Jonath an, both Satu rday and Sunday dur ing the Weekend 's events. Jo nath an is a freshman and loves Trini ty.
