I received a most interesting letter from the Director of Financial Aid, Anne M. Zartarian, about the beneficiaries of our "1916 Memorial Scholarship" for 1982. Here it is, in part: " It is my pleasure to notify you that the following students are recipients of the Class of 1916 Memorial Scholarship for 1982-83: Leigh-Ann Wilson '84, Longmeadow, MA Amy Snyder '84, Swampscott, MA Martin Hancock '85, Manchester, CT Frederick Andreoli '85, E. Hartford, CT. Their success at Trinity is tangible evidence that your generosity makes it possible for us to extend financial aid to highly qualified students unable to afford the full cost of a Trinity education. Without support such as yours, we would be severely limited in our ability to assist such students. In the years to come, gifts from private donors and foundations will become increasingly important as the Federal government reduces its role in the financing of higher education. "We are extremely grateful for your ongoing support and continued interest in students at Trinity." One of the girls, and one of the boys, so far, have written me as Class Secretary for 1916, very interesting letters about their activities and studies. Both students are deeply appreciative of "our" (1916) help, and say that they would be unable to continue at Trinity without "our" scholarship fund. I will be glad to forward copies of the letters to you if you let me know. I wish to express my deepest sympathy personally to BOB O'CONNOR in his great trouble due to his lost eyesight. I know you all feel as I do about it, so perhaps you will write him and Mary, who is caring for him so wonderfully. My own Carol is mending slowly from
her right hipbone fracture last April, and I fully expect to have her with me at the next Half-Century Club meeting in May '83. I hope all of you still on your feet will be there. It is certainly worth the effort. My grandson, Robert Schmitt, is now a "midshipman" at Annapolis, and already on the J.V. soccer team. My youngest son, PETER SCHMITT '60, is his father . May 1983 is fast approaching and will be the occasion of the sixty-fifth reunion of the Class of 1918. From what I can gather also the last formally recognized union of the Class by the College. This momentous occasion has given your SECRETARY cause to do a little reminiscing. The spring of 1917, our junior year, was the last our Class spent together. Things were not the same after our country entered World War I. Soon after afternoon classes were over, the bugle of MORT CREHORE '14 called us to drill almost as soon as the baseball, track, and tennis teams had started to practice. Spare time was taken by inquiries into the first officers' training camp at Plattsburg and other branches of the service. As I recall BRAD BOARDMAN was accepted and received a commission. In the fall of 1918 while at Camp Zachary Taylor I saw his name on the list of those who succumbed to the flu and went over to the camp newspaper and wrote an obituary for a fine man I had known from boyhood. The 1919 Ivy issued our senior year by the Class of 1919 showed more of our Class in the service than on the campus and most of the latter were in service by Commencement. All told, degrees were received by members of the Class over a period of four years: one in 1917, several in 1918, others in 1919 by returning servicemen, and several in 1920 by servicemen who had served abroad. It was with deep regret that we learned of the death of JOE BUFFINGTON. Joe had been afflicted by arthritis for several years. It was Joe who initiated our Class Memorial Scholarship Fund at a Class Reunion with a substantial initial contribution. A recent visit to the College office disclosed the fund now has in hand some $89,000 with at least $17,000 additional in promises. If any Class member hasn't cont ributed or would care to make an additional contribution now or through his will the College would welcome such a gift or bequest.
