Employee Spot Light

The purpose of an employee spotlight is to celebrate the great staff at Lower Shore America Job Center and showcase firsthand stories about our workplace. This month, we would like to introduce an employee, Smith Saint Louis, employed with Telamon Corporation within the American Job Center. Read her inspiring story here!

1.What do you like most about the work you do here?

I like that my work changes lives. An entire household/family may experience a better quality of life if I work with the customer successfully.

2. What is the most exciting/interesting/challenging project you’ve worked on here?

My colleagues and I developed and taught a pre-CDL course with ESL components. We aimed to create a foundational course, preparing the group to participate in structured CDL training effectively and increasing their chances of earning first-time credentials. Half the group reached their CDl class B permit and worked with our provider on passing the license portion.

3. How long have you been with the Telamon Corporation?

Since August 2019.

4.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and plan to be a case manager or psychologist. However, I spent the first five years of college in the event planning/ catering industry. After serving as the Food Service Manager for Telamon for about two years, the COVID pandemic made it difficult for Telamon to continue its food service program. I was offered a Workforce Development Specialist (WDS) in the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) once the food service program ended.

I continue to focus on my career plans and will continue to be an anchor or bridge to my community, specifically those with barriers.

I am in an environment that was created to be a solution. To help connect individuals to resources. As Telamon employees, we are here to maximize results.

7. What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?

Quality takes time and a lot of (wo)man hours. I understand numbers keep us in business, but servicing our customers with barriers sometimes requires telling some people “wait” so we are able to focus on those we are already working with. I understand this is not possible for all our partners.

8. What was your dream job or profession when you were a kid?

I saw myself as an educator or psychologist.

Thank you Smith Saint Louis, you have done an excellent job at Telamon. We are so proud of you!
