Sports Medicine An important part of every athletic program is the care and treatment student-athletes receive from its sports medicine staff. For well over a decade, Tallahassee Community College Athletics has enjoyed a strong relationship with Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic (TOC), who provides a certified athletic trainer, or ATC, to care for the Eagles’ more than 70 student-athletes. An ATC is an individual who has completed a four-year degree in a limited-entry Sports Medicine program and has passed a national exam that enables that person to become certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification. Once certified, the individual can provide professional care to the population of student-athletes under the following scope of practice:     

Provide care and educate individuals about prevention of athletic injuries; Recognition, evaluation and immediate care of injuries; Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries Health care administration Professional development and responsibilities

Tallahassee Community College is privileged to have David Young, MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS, on its athletic staff as Head ATC. Young is no stranger to TCC or Panhandle Conference athletics, having joined the Eagles’ staff in 2008, following a four-year stint as Head ATC with Chipola College. As he was at Chipola, Young is an adjunct instructor at TCC, his second such tour of duty at the College, having also served in the role from 2002-04. Young earned his bachelor’s degree in the Spring of 1999 from the University of North Florida. While at UNF, he gained extensive experience through internships with UNF women’s soccer, Jacksonville University baseball, Bolles High School football, Baptist/St. Vincent Sports Medicine Rehabilitation and the Jacksonville Cyclones, a semi-pro soccer team. Later that year, Young relocated to Tallahassee, where he joined the team at TOC and began his master’s studies in sports administration at Florida State University. Upon completion of his master’s degree in 2002, he served as an adjunct faculty member in TCC’s Division of Technology and Professional Programs until accepting the Head ATC position at Chipola in 2004.

David Young Head ATC

While in Tallahassee, Young has worked with Rickards High School, the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks hockey organization and the Tallahassee Thunder of the Arena II Football League. As part of his responsibilities with TCC, Friday nights still find Young on the sidelines of football fields across Florida’s Panhandle and Big Bend regions. He also assists with TOC’s Sports Medicine Outreach Program. Young and his wife, Tisa, are the proud parents of a daughter, Riley, and step-daughter, Paige. The couple also enjoys time with their Labrador Retrievers, Kea and Babe.

TCC

Head Coach Patti Townsend

P

atti Townsend is entering her seventh season as head coach of the Tallahassee Community College softball team and her 13th year overall with the Eagles.

TCC gave Townsend her first head coaching position when it hired her on July 3, 2003. The third head coach in school history, Townsend knows TCC softball and the Panhandle Conference as well as anyone, having served as an assistant coach under both of her predecessors, Maria Mendoza and Lori Goodart, from 1996-2002. Prior to that, she was a graduate assistant at Florida State University under legendary coach Dr. JoAnne Graf from 1995-96. Following a 32-21 campaign in 2009, Townsend now has 155 wins in six years as the Eagles’ head coach. Her 2008 squad claimed the Florida Community College Activities Association’s Gulf District Championship following a magical, albeit improbable, run through the eight-team tournament. A 7-6, 11-inning victory over PC rival Pensacola Junior College on May 4, 2008, clinched the Gulf District Championship and gave the Eagles their first-ever berth in the NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch Championships, where they eventually ended their season as one of the final 12 teams in contention for the national title. Though she has extensive coaching experience, it was as a standout player where Townsend first made her name. A four-year starter at the University of Michigan, the former Patti Benedict was a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American, earning first-team honors in 1993 after a thirdteam selection in 1992. She was also twice named Big Ten Player of the Year (1992, 1993). In 2002, as part of Michigan's 25th anniversary of softball, she was named to the Wolverines' Silver Anniversary Team. A trip through the Michigan record books shows just how prominent Townsend's name remains in Wolverine lore. Her 22 triples are second all-time while her 244 hits are good for sixth on the Wolverines' all-time list. She is also in the top ten all-time in stolen bases (4th), RBI (7th), batting average (9th), and at-bats (10th). In addition, she owns the single-season record for triples with 11 in 1993, the same year she produced the third-best single season batting average (.421) in school history.

Townsend also has international experience, having played for Team USA in 1995 and 1997. The 1995 squad captured the Gold Medal at the Pan American Games in Mar de Plata, Argentina. Following her collegiate career, Townsend joined the Women's Professional Softball League (WPSL), first as a coach with the Georgia Pride (1996-97) and then as a player with the Pride and the Florida Wahoos. In 2000, she led the Wahoos to the WPSL Championship and was named league Most Valuable Player and Hitter of the Year after leading the league in batting average (.330), hits (35) and doubles (six). She also placed in the top five in three additional offensive categories, including on-base percentage (.366), slugging percentage (.434) and runs scored (11). At TCC, Townsend coached the Eagles to four consecutive berths in the FCCAA’s Gulf District Tournament (2005-08). TCC clinched its first trip to the postseason under Townsend in 2005 by defeating arch-rival Chipola College, two games to one, in a sudden death playoff. In 2006, TCC brought home a third-place finish in the eight-team tournament and, in the process, earned victories over nationally-ranked Manatee Community College (No. 9) and St. Petersburg College (No. 17). In 2007, she guided the Eagles to a personal-best 33 wins.

Townsend’s Eagles have also picked up numerous individual honors. To date, 28 of her players have received all-conference recognition. Success has come off the playing field as well. Townsend has coached four NJCAA Academic AllAmericans — Amanda Helton and Kristina Valente in 2005, Kelly Jo Langston in 2006 and Morgan O’Keefe in 2009. Additionally, 38 players have been named to the Panhandle Conference All-Academic Team. In 2005, the Eagle Softball team was named TCC’s Academic Team of the Year. Townsend, an enthusiastic advocate for volunteerism, is known for coaching her players on the importance of giving back to the community. In recent years, TCC softball players have volunteered at Tallahassee’s annual Christmas Festival, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and Gretchen Everhart School. In addition to coaching, Townsend is one of the nation's most sought-after hitting instructors. Among her stops are legendary Yankee Stadium in New York and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where she has worked with camps sponsored by Major League Baseball for underprivileged children. She has also served as an instructor for the National Sports Clinics, sponsored by Mary Nutter. Townsend earned a bachelor's degree in sports management and communication from Michigan. She and her husband, Jimmy, were married on November 2, 2002, and currently reside in Monticello, Fla., where they are the proud parents of five-year-old daughter, Ali.

Assistant Coach Jennifer McKibben

J

ennifer McKibben, a Tallahassee Community College graduate, is a fifth-year assistant coach with the Eagles. McKibben, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., who prepped at Mandarin High School, played at TCC in 1995 and 1996 under former coach Maria Mendoza. She joined coach Patti Townsend’s staff at TCC in August 2005.

McKibben’s responsibilities include recruiting and coordinating TCC’s summer softball camps. She also works with the Eagles’ pitchers, catchers and infielders. McKibben has helped guide the Eagles to four appearances in the Florida Community College Activities Association’s Gulf District Tournament, culminating with the 2008 championship and a berth in the NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch Championships. In her four seasons with the Eagles, she has coached 21 all-Panhandle Conference players. McKibben, who played catcher during her college career, was named first-team all-Panhandle Conference, allFCCAA and all-Region during her sophomore season with the Eagles. She was also named to the FCCAA AllTournament Team and was a third-team NFCA All-American. She continued to flourish at the collegiate level while playing for coach Scot Thomas at Virginia Tech, where she was a two-time first-team all-Atlantic 10 selection. She was also named the Hokies’ Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1998. McKibben’s name is found throughout the Virginia Tech record books. In addition to holding the record for most home runs in a game (2), she finished her career among the Hokies’ all-time leaders in batting average (3rd, .316) and slugging (6th, .456). She is among the single-season leaders in batting average (4th, .358) and runs batted in (5th, 40). McKibben played with the Decatur Twister in the Women’s Major Amateur Softball Association in 1998 and also participated in the Canada Cup. She began her coaching career in 1999, returning to the state of Virginia as the assistant coach at Cave Spring High School, located in Roanoke. During her seven year stint at Cave Spring, she helped guide the Knights to six District Championships, two Regional Championships (2000, 2005), and a pair of State Final Four Appearances (2000, 2005). She also coached at Ferrum College, an NCAA Division III school in Virginia, from 2002-04, helping the Panthers to the Dixie Conference Tournament Championship in 2002 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament where the team finished third in the Atlantic Regional. Additionally, she coached with the Virginia Class Action Scrappers and the Palm Beach Lady Gators Gold, the 2001 Pony National Champions. Since 1999, McKibben has given private instruction while also working numerous softball clinics, including those at the University of Texas-El Paso and Virginia Tech University, as well as “Get Game” camps.

Assistant Coach Jennifer Whitley

J

ennifer Whitley, a Tallahassee native and Tallahassee Community College alum, is returning for her second stint on the Eagles’ coaching staff. Whitley previously served as an assistant to Patti Townsend from 2006-08. Following the Eagles’ appearance in the 2008 NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch Championships, Whitley accepted a position at her alma mater, the University of Central Florida, where she served as an assistant to her college coach, Renee Luers-Gillispie, during the 2009 season. Whitley prepped at Tallahassee’s North Florida Christian School, where she was a five-year starter and played on three Final Four teams. She earned three first-team all-Big Bend selections and was first-team all-state as a senior. After signing with the Eagles, Whitley, who played at TCC from 2001-02, became one of the most decorated players in the program’s history.

Playing on Coach Maria Mendoza’s final team as a freshman in 2001, she batted .335 with 28 RBIs and was named first-team all-Panhandle Conference and second-team all-FCCAA. That season, the Eagles advanced to the FCCAA Gulf District Tournament, where she was an all-tournament selection. Whitley also garnered allacademic honors from both the Panhandle Conference and FCCAA. As a sophomore in 2002, Whitley batted .374 with a team-high five home runs, 17 doubles and a single-season record 49 RBI for first-year coach Lori Goodart, again leading the Eagles to the FCCAA Gulf District Tournament. She received a spot on the alltournament team for a second straight season and was also a repeat selection on the PC and FCCAA All-Academic teams. In addition to being named first-team all-Panhandle Conference and all-FCCAA, Whitley was named Panhandle Conference and FCCAA Player of the Year, becoming only the second player in TCC’s history to accomplish the feat. Later that year, she participated in the Canada Cup as a member of the NJCAA All-Stars. UCF was Whitley’s next stop. With the Knights, she was named to the Atlantic Sun’s All-Tournament Team in 2004. After earning her bachelor’s in interpersonal communication, Whitley returned as a student assistant on the Golden Knights’ coaching staff in 2005. Whitley is currently working on her master’s in sports management at Florida State University. TCC EAGLE SOFTBALL

Graduate Assistant Eden Brock

E

den Brock, a second-year assistant on the TCC softball coaching staff, is no stranger to the Tallahassee softball community. A former prep standout at nearby Wakulla High School, Brock has returned to the Big Bend for her first stop on the coaching circuit. While with the Eagles, Brock, who made a name for herself "in the circle," will work with TCC's pitching staff.

After graduating from Wakulla High School in 2003, Brock took her talents to the Big Ten Conference, where she was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Wisconsin. As a freshman in 2004, Brock posted a 12-13 record en route to being named the Badgers' Freshman of the Year. In 2005, she won 20 games (20-11), the third-highest single-season total in UW history and received the team's Determination Award while also being named to the All-Tournament Team at the Embassy Suites Tulsa Invitational. During her junior season, Brock went 18-13 and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic. Brock arguably saved her best performance for last during her senior season in 2007. In addition to receiving a second All-Tournament Team berth at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic, she went 15-13 in the circle, leading the Badgers in wins, ERA (2.12), innings pitched (162.0), complete games (10) and strikeouts (173) - the fifth-highest single-season total in school history. Her efforts on the field led to her being UW's Most Valuable Player. She was equally impressive in the classroom and, as a result, earned Academic AllBig Ten honors. Brock finished her Wisconsin career with a record of 65-50, the second-highest win total in school history. She is currently in the Badgers' top five in 11 other categories, including: appearances (2nd, 142), games started (2nd, 116), winning percentage (2nd, .565), strikeout ratio (5.22), ERA (3rd, 2.55), innings pitched (697.0), strikeouts (520) and shutouts (13). Known for her control in the circle, Brock allowed only 1.24 walks per seven innings, the best ration in school history. Brock graduated from Wisconsin in 2007 with a degree in psychology. She is currently attending Florida State University where she is pursuing a master's degree in mental health counseling.

Student Assistant Kaitlin Taylor

K

aitlin Taylor, a member of Tallahassee Community College’s 2008 NJCAA District H championship team, is serving as a student assistant during the 2010 season. Taylor will assist in various aspects of the program, both at practice and games.

Following the 2008 season, Taylor returned to her hometown of Palatka, Fla., and attended St. Johns River Community College. As the Vikings’ starting first baseman in 2009, she earned second-team all-Mid Florida Conference honors after batting .301 in 46 games. She also scored 15 runs and led the team in hits (40), doubles (9), home runs (4) and RBIs (31). During her one season as a player at TCC, Taylor started all 53 games for the Eagles, helping the team to a 2924 record. The win-loss record will always pale in comparison to what she and her 12 teammate accomplished in the postseason — a Cinderella run to the FCCAA’s Gulf District Championship and TCC’s first-ever berth in the NJCAA Division I Fastpitch Championships, where it was the NJCAA’s District H representative. Taylor batted .211 with one home run and 12 RBIs during the season. In seven games at the Gulf District Tournament, she batted .261 and hit safely in the Eagles’ last six games, which was her longest hitting streak of the season. Taylor prepped at Orange Park High School, where she was a four-year letterwinner under former TCC softball player Meredith (Hudson) Hoffman. She was a member of district championship team in 2004 and 2005. Taylor also racked up numerous individual accolades while playing at Orange Park. In 2005 and 2006, she was named first-team all-county and also captured all-conference awards. In 2006, she was Orange Park’s Offensive Most Valuable Player and was named third-team all-First Coast. Taylor re-enrolled at TCC in August 2009 to begin studying in the College’s Radiologic Technology Program.

In only its second year of intercollegiate play, TCC put together a season to remember in 1994. Under then-head coach Maria Mendoza, the Eagles earned an at-large bid to the FCCAA Tournament, beating out 1993 FCCAA Champion Valencia Community College and Florida Community CollegeJacksonville. Making the most of its opportunity, TCC captured the 1994 FCCAA Championship. Up next, the NJCAA Tournament, right? Not so fast. Things were much different 14 years ago. For a miniscule $60 fee, any junior college team could enter the national tournament. Having just won the highlycompetitive FCCAA Championship, the Lady Eagles wasted little time shelling out the $60. Surprisingly, only 14 other teams joined TCC in Lake City, Fla., for the NJCAA Division I Slow Pitch Championships. After defeating 1993 NJCAA Champion Lake City Community College on the tournament’s opening day, the Eagles began day two on a losing note, falling to Meridian (Miss.) Community College, 9-5. TCC, however, responded with a convincing 12-2 win over Lake City, a victory that advanced the Eagles into the championship round and a rematch with Meridian. Faced with the task of having to beat Meridian twice, the Eagles dug down deep, beating MCC, 7-2, to force a winner-take-all showdown. Game two was never close as TCC rolled to a 6-0 win and the College’s first and only national championship. The victory completed a 62-17 campaign, a school-record for wins that still stands today. Shortstop Valorie “Porky” Waller was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Kelly Beede, Kelly Best and Tammi Talley. For her efforts, Mendoza was named Coach of the Year by both the FCCAA and NJCAA. of the FCCAA and NJCAA Championships, the 1994 softball team was inducted into the Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

Any one of the 2008 Tallahassee Community College Eagles’ comebacks could stand on its own merit. They were that dramatic. That there was one comeback after another, all with the season on the line, was simply unbelievable. TCC didn’t take the conventional route but, in the end, it got the job done, winning the Florida Community College Activities Association’s Gulf District (NJCAA District H) Championship and its first-ever berth in the NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch Championships. After qualifying for the postseason as the Panhandle Conference’s number four seed, the Eagles began their run to the championship by stunning NJCAA No. 3 Manatee Community College. Trailing 5-0, the Eagles scored 12 runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 12-9 victory over the favored Lancers. A loss to Hillsborough Community College followed, leaving the Eagles on the brink of elimination. Day two began with a 1-0 win over Polk Community College. TCC followed that with a pair of wins in its last at-bat. The Eagles ousted defending NJCAA champion Chipola College, 3-2 in ten innings, then beat Hillsborough, 6-5 in nine innings. In both games, TCC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the game and its season. In the championship round against Pensacola Junior College, TCC won game one, 7-4, to force a winner-take-all finale. In game two, the clock appeared ready to strike midnight for Cinderella. The Eagles were down to their last three outs and trailed 6-2, but TCC delivered again. The Eagles miraculously scored four runs to tie the game, dodged two major scoring opportunities by Pensacola and took a 7-6 lead when Laura Meaut’s single scored Heather Mauldin with what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the eleventh. TCC dropped an 8-4 decision to Santa Fe College in the overall FCCAA title game but the Eagles had what they wanted: the FCCAA’s Gulf District Championship and a trip to Plant City, Fla. At the NJCAA Tournament, TCC solidified what will certainly be its legacy: a penchant for delivering with its back against the wall. Twice, the Eagles tied the game in its last at-bat to force extra innings and though both games ended in defeat, they were one of the final 12 teams in contention for the national championship — TCC’s best finish during 14 years of fast pitch softball. Mary Helen Tyler, Becky Smith, Morgan O’Keefe, Amanda Reyes and Mauldin were selected to the FCCAA All-Tournament Team. The quintet was joined by Meaut and Lela Land on the Gulf District All-Tournament Team.

TCC 7, Pensacola 6, 11 innings - May 4, 2008 TCC Softball wins Gulf District Championship, berth in NJCAA tourney AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Call ‘em Drama Queens. Call ‘em the Comeback Kids. Call ‘em the Cardiac Eagles. All of the above apply to the 2008 Tallahassee Community College softball team. Now, following a postseason run for the ages, you can also call the 2008 Eagles NJCAA Gulf District Champions. Down to its last three outs and trailing Pensacola Junior College, 62, TCC scored four seventh-inning runs to send Sunday’s NJCAA Gulf District Championship Game to extra innings. With the game still knotted at six-all, Laura Meaut’s RBI single in the top of the eleventh scored Heather Mauldin with what proved to be the game-winning run as TCC defeated Pensacola, 7-6, to claim the title and a berth in the NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch Championships. TCC later fell to NJCAA No. 1/ FCCAA No. 1 Santa Fe Community College, winners of the NJCAA Atlantic District Championship, 8-4, for the overall FCCAA title. Having already claimed the championship that mattered most, the loss to Santa Fe did little to temper the emotions of TCC head coach Patti Townsend. “They’re amazing,” said Townsend of her 12-player roster. “I’ve never seen anything like it – the heart, the determination, the will power – I’ve never seen a team work so closely together.” TCC won the FCCAA and NJCAA Championships while playing in the NJCAA’s slow pitch softball division in 1994. Prior to Sunday, however, the Eagles’ best finish during their NJCAA Fast Pitch softball era came in 2002, when they brought home a runners-up trophy. The Eagles, whose season was on the brink of extinction repeatedly during the final two days of play at the Auburndale Softball Complex, won five consecutive elimination games, culminating with Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Pensacola. TCC won Sunday’s first game, 74, to force a second and decisive game against its Panhandle Conference rival. Left with no alternative but to win, the Eagles did just that. Not once, not twice but five times. After losing to Hillsborough Community College in Friday’s second game, TCC knew it would face elimination each time it took the field. The Eagles thrived on the pressure, a fact that surprised Townsend little, if any. “They were confident,” Townsend TCC EAGLE SOFTBALL

noted. “They wanted to win, and they had it in their minds that they would not lose.” TCC squeezed out a 1-0 victory over Polk Community College in its first game on Saturday. The Eagles followed that with a pair of wins in their last at-bat. First, the Eagles ousted defending NJCAA champion and arch rival Chipola College with a 3-2, 10-inning victory. TCC then avenged its earlier loss to Hillsborough with a 6-5, 9inning triumph. In both games, the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. With momentum on the Eagles’ side, Townsend hoped that would offset the fact that Pensacola only took the field once on Saturday and had played but three games through the tournament’s first two days. “They (the players) could sense that it (the championship) was within their grasp,” added Townsend, who was named NJCAA Gulf District Coach of the Year. “There was a calm confidence about them.” TCC’s gutsy performance certainly backed up her logic. After winning Sunday’s first game in businesslike fashion, the Eagles drew first blood in the winner-take-all finale. A two-run, third-inning homer by Mary Helen Tyler put the Eagles ahead 2-0. That lead, however, was short-lived. A TCC error allowed leadoff batter Whitney Ward to reach safely in the Pirates’ half of the third. Pensacola capitalized on the miscue, sending ten batters to the plate in the inning against the Eagles’ Amanda Reyes and Morgan O’Keefe. Pensacola roughed up the duo for six runs on five hits, including a two-run double by Daniela DeOliviera. TCC threatened in each of the next three innings but Pensacola’s Tyler Easterling worked herself out of trouble each time, forcing the Eagles to strand a pair of runners in each frame. Three outs from the championship, Pensacola called upon Julianne Beaugh, the losing pitcher in game one. Before Beaugh recorded an out, however, the Eagles had tied the game. After Mauldin and Tyler started the rally with consecutive singles, Meaut brought everyone home when she drilled a three-run home run, cutting the Pirates’ lead to 7-6. Meaut went 3-for-6 with four RBI in game two and was one of seven players named to the NJCAA Gulf District All-Tournament Team. Alayshia Jarrell continued the

rally, reaching on an error. After a wild pitch sent courtesy runner Briana Leverett into scoring position, O’Keefe hit a ground rule double to tie the game at six. TCC went down relatively easy over the next three innings – only Hilary Carver reached base, singling with two outs in the tenth. Pensacola, meanwhile, came agonizingly close to winning the game on two separate occasions. Reyes, who reentered the game with two outs in the sixth, pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth. An inning later, two walks and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Pensacola again failed to deliver as Reyes got consecutive fly outs to extend the Eagles’ season. Reyes (16-15) worked 32.2 innings during the three-day tournament, earning five of TCC’s six victories and a spot on both the NJCAA Gulf District and FCCAA AllTournament teams. Her final two innings were arguably her best of the entire weekend. She sat the Pirates down in order in both the tenth and eleventh, inducing Krystan Mahowald into a game-ending groundout that set off a jubilant celebration, both on the field and in the stands. Reyes’ efforts were one of many that left Townsend searching for words. “We’ve been through a lot this season, but we finally put it all together,” Townsend said. “All of the hard work paid off.” The game two excitement was made possible by a solid outing in Sunday’s first contest. After falling behind 2-0, the Eagles plated three runs in the bottom of the third. A pair of walks sandwiched around an infield single loaded the

Mauldin and Tyler collected back-to-back singles to tie the game. Meaut’s sacrifice fly brought Becky Smith home to give TCC a 3-2 lead. Pensacola tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth before the Eagles’ bats came alive again. Smith broke the 3-3 tie with a single, scoring Carver. Later in the inning, TCC loaded the bases for Tyler, who delivered a basesclearing double. Tyler, one of five players to earn a spot on both the NJCAA Gulf District and FCCAA All-Tournament teams, went 5-for-9 in Sunday’s games against Pensacola, scoring twice and driving in six runs O’Keefe pitched the final three innings of game one to earn her second save of the tournament. “Getting the first win (over Pensacola) was huge,” said Townsend. Joining Meaut, Reyes and Tyler on the NJCAA Gulf District AllTournament team were Mauldin, O’Keefe, Smith and Lela Land. Tyler, Mauldin, Smith, O’Keefe and Reyes were selected to the FCCAA All-Tournament team. —Rob Chaney, Sports Information

Maria Mendoza, Head Coach, 1993-2001 When Tallahassee Community College established its softball program in 1993, it pegged Tallahassee Leon High School graduate Maria Mendoza as the program’s first head coach. Upon her retirement from coaching in 2001, Mendoza had turned TCC into one of the state’s preeminent softball programs. In nine years with the Eagles, Mendoza accumulated an impressive record of 385-130. Included were three Panhandle Conference Championships and six trips to the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA) Tournament, as well as state and national titles in 1994. TCC spent its first two seasons playing in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) slow pitch division, where it quickly became a power. The Eagles won 53 games during the inaugural 1993 season en route to the school’s first PC Championship in any sport. However, it was during the 1994 season that Mendoza put TCC Softball on the national map. After qualifying for the FCCAA Tournament, the Eagles became the first TCC team to claim an FCCAA Championship. TCC didn’t stop there, however, as it defeated Meridian (Miss.) Community College, to capture the College’s first and only NJCAA Championship. For her efforts, Mendoza was named Coach of the Year by both the FCCAA and the NJCAA. The following year, despite making the jump to the NJCAA’s fast-pitch division, Mendoza and the Eagles continued to thrive, capturing a second PC Championship. Conference title number three came three years later, in 1998, when the Eagles won a PC-record 18 games. Mendoza’s final team won 47 games, finished as PC Runners-up and made a sixth postseason appearance.

Panhandle Conference Coach of the Year

At TCC, Mendoza coached more than 40 All-Panhandle Conference players, 20 FCCAA All-Region players and eight All-Americans.

1993, 1995, 1998

FCCAA Coach of the Year 1994

An All-Conference performer at Troy University and an ASA All-American, Mendoza earned a bachelor’s in physical education/recreation with a minor in business administration and athletic training from Troy in 1984.

NJCAA Coach of the Year 1994

Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame 2002

In 2002, she was part of the inaugural class inducted into the Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame. The FCCAA inducted Mendoza into its Hall of Fame in 2007.

This is Tallahassee Community College Innovation and Excellence at TCC Since 1966, Tallahassee Community College has offered high-quality post-secondary education for the citizens of Leon, Gadsden and Wakulla counties, along with students from throughout the state, nation and abroad. With excellent academic support and classroom facilities and Web-based classes, TCC offers a variety of instructional methods to ensure student success.

Academics TCC is recognized, annually, in Community College Week's Top 100 colleges for the number of associated degrees awarded. In June 2009, TCC ranked 16th among two-year institutions nationwide in the total number of associate degrees awarded. Additionally, TCC was ranked 14th nationally in the number of degrees awarded to African-Americans. TCC's faculty provide a strong foundation for its many graduates moving on to Florida State University, Florida A&M University and other four-year institutions. Nearly 75 percent of TCC's A. A. graduates transfer into the State University System within a year, the highest percentage in the Florida community college system. TCC works closely with its University Partners: Barry University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Flagler College and Saint Leo University. Each school offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree without leaving the TCC campus.

Faculty Excellence TCC's faculty is committed to learning, student success and quality improvement. Many of our faculty members have received recognition from state and national organizations as being the finest in their field. TCC's traditionally strong faculty - rated twice the national average in doctoral degrees and years of experience provides a strong foundation for its many graduates moving on to four-year colleges and universities.

Dr. Bill Law President

Affordability and Flexibility TCC's in-state tuition and fees are $75.75 per credit hour (effective Spring 2010) — one of the most affordable of Florida’s 28 community college. Student Support Services TCC offers several college readiness programs such as the TCC Connection and the Summer Education Academy. TCC Connection and the Summer Education Academy are summer programs designed to help high school students who score below college level on the Florida College Entrance Placement Test (CPT). The programs also hope to set the stage for students' subsequent improved performance in high school. TCC prides its on its support services for those with disabilities. We provide accommodations such as note takers, tutors, interpreters, untimed testing, an adaptive computer lab and individualized pre-registration assistance are available. The College Reach-Out Program, the TCC Foundation and programs such as Take Stock in Children and the Challenge Scholarship provide a vision for local students wishing to include college in their futures.

The NJCAA, the FCCAA & the Panhandle Conference The NJCAA is the governing body of intercollegiate athletics for two-year colleges. As such, its programs are designed to meet the unique needs of a diverse group of student-athletes who come from both traditional and non-traditional backgrounds and whose purpose in selecting a junior college may be as varied as their experiences before attending college. The purpose of the NJCAA is to promote and foster junior college athletics on intersectional and national levels so that results will be consistent with the total educational program of its members. TCC and all other members of the FCCAA compete as NJCAA Division I schools. TCC has one NJCAA Championship to its credit—the women’s softball team won the slow pitch national crown in 1994. In 2006, the men’s basketball advanced to the National Championship Game and brought home a runners-up finish after previously finishing third in the 1997 tournament. The women’s basketball team brought home a third-place finish in the 2001 tournament. As part of the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA), the Panhandle is one of four conferences (the others are the Mid-Florida, Suncoast, and Southern) which make up Region VIII of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). In addition to the PC’s six sports, the FCCAA competes in men’s and women’s golf, swimming and diving, women’s soccer, and women’s tennis. In basketball, baseball and softball, the FCCAA is also designated as Region VIII by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Winners of the respective FCCAA Tournaments automatically qualify for the NJCAA Tournament. To date, TCC has captured four FCCAA Championships — slow pitch softball in 1994, men’s basketball in 1997 and 2006 and women’s basketball in 2001. Additionally, the College’s fast pitch softball team won the FCCAA’s Gulf District Championship in 2008 and thus qualified for the NJCAA Tournament. Stretching from the western tip of Florida’s Panhandle to the Big Bend, the Panhandle Conference, comprised of five schools, reaches more than 50,000 students annually. The diversity in the student population is as great as the communities in which the campuses are located. Connected by the Interstate 10 corridor, the Panhandle Conference has a presence in Florida’s nationally-known cities such as Pensacola, Panama City, and Tallahassee, as well as a pair of its hidden gems—Niceville and Marianna. The member schools of the Panhandle Conference are Chipola College (Marianna), Gulf Coast Community College (Panama City), Northwest Florida State College (Niceville), Pensacola Junior College and Tallahassee Community College. The Panhandle Conference fields teams in six different sports—men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, fast-pitch softball, volleyball, and cross country. One of the most competitive conferences in the nation, the Panhandle Conference is always home to some of the nation’s top teams and most gifted studentathletes. Since revitalizing its athletic program in 1990, Tallahassee Community College has captured a total of 13 Panhandle Conference Championships (three in softball, five in baseball, four in men’s basketball and one in women’s basketball).

The TCC Eagle Boosters

The TCC Eagle Boosters was established in 1999 and formally organized in October of 2000 to support Tallahassee Community College Athletics through volunteer and financial support. The TCC Eagle Boosters is dedicated to help reach the educational and athletic goals set forth by the TCC Athletic Department. The group also seeks to establish and promote goals and Booster projects, which tend to strengthen the ties between Boosters and the College, as well as the community. The TCC Eagle Boosters also meet for social purposes and recruit others interested in the success and future progress of athletics at Tallahassee Community College. The TCC Eagle Boosters have a number of exciting events each year, beginning with the annual Eagle Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet. The banquet, which takes place the final Friday in September, serves as the unofficial start to the athletic season. The banquet celebrates the athletic and academic accomplishments of TCC’s former studentathletes, as well as coaches, staff members, and contributors who have helped ensure the success of those to suit up for the Eagles. During home basketball games, the TCC Eagle Boosters Hospitality Room is open to Boosters and their guests. The Hospitality Room is a great forum to meet and fellowship with fellow Boosters. This season, the Boosters proudly welcome Wing Zone and Refreshment Services Pepsi of Tallahassee as its Hospitality Room Partners. Another annual event is the Fan Appreciation Day Cookout, held in the spring during a TCC Baseball/ Softball doubleheader. It’s free and is held at the newly renovated pavilion located between the fields on Progress Drive. Booster memberships are available on six levels, some of which include discounted prices for TCC employees. Eagle Booster memberships are available for $50 ($25 for TCC employees); Blue Boosters, $75 ($50); Silver Boosters, $125 ($75); and Gold Boosters for $200. There is also a $10 membership for TCC students and $15 membership for members of the TCC Alumni Association. All Boosters receive reserved seating at home basketball games and are automatically subscribed to the TCC Eagle Boosters Newsletter, published monthly, as well as the TCC Sports Information mailing list, which provides press releases on all athletics events.
