Hu Shih, world renowned Chinese philosopher and scholar, came to TC to work with faculty such as John Dewey, Paul Monroe, William Heard Kilpatrick, William Russell and others. 1914 Kuo Ping Wen became the first Chinese national to earn a Ph.D. degree from Teachers College 1919 Professor John Dewey, an advocate of progressive education, went on a two-year lecture trip to China to promote this educational philosophy. Dewey had a tremendous influence on progressive scholars in China that contributed significantly to shaping the course of education in China, particularly higher education. By 1950 more than 40 Chinese scholars, mentored by Professor Dewey, had been awarded doctorate degrees at TC and returned to China to help transform its education system.
